San Marino only has a chance to qualify for the playoffs because of their Nations League wins against Gibraltar and Liechtenstein. If all the stars align for them, they will make the playoffs. Then they will have to beat two different opponents to actually reach the World Cup. Not gonna happen, they are way too weak
But the format is dumb
>>151392391
Indeed. Cruel irony that FIFA promised to „weed out corruption“ only to end up WAY more corrupt than ever before. And no one really cares anymore. Now imagine who will succeed Infantino …

Not only is it a possibility, it's actually a fairly realistic scenario too. There are 4 slots available to NL group winners that fail to finish in the top 2 of their qualifying group.
Spain, Portugal, England and Norway have already guaranteed a top 2 finish.
Germany, France and Czech Republic will almost certainly get a top 2 finish.
Wales and North Macedonia are fighting for 2nd in their group so only 1 of them will take one of the 4 NL slots while the other reaches the play-off through the normal route.
Romania have a good chance of moving into 2nd in their group, they are 3 points behind Bosnia and only need to play Bosnia and San Marino (easy win), whereas Bosnia also need to play the group leaders Austria.
Northern Ireland are in pretty much an identical position to Romania, their remaining matches are against 2nd place in the group (Slovakia) and a micronation (Luxembourg), while Slovakia also need to play the group leaders (Germany).
Sweden look unlikely to finish 2nd in their group, so will likely take 1 of the NL slots.
Moldova would definitely take 1 of the NL slots over San Marino since they can't finish 2nd anymore.

So basically if Romania and Northern Ireland move to 2nd in their group, San Marino will progress. Although they would still need to win two matches in the second-round so it's unlikely they'll actually play in the World Cup.
Anonymous United Kingdom No.151392682 [Report]
>>151392632
Also it's very unlikely at this point, but if Sweden and Serbia also manage to get 2nd place, Israel would also progress to the next round.

Not really, but the Nations League doesn't have anything to do with it, although it leads to retarded situations like these. But CONMEBOL's are probably even easier now that 7/10 teams can qualify

At least things are simple with CONMEBOL.

For some reason the genius at UEFA thought that winning your group in the League C is more important than being in the League A in the first place.

Kinda like saying that the Sudamericana champion is better than the Libertadores semifinalist because one won a trophy and the other didn't, even when one requisites of playing the Sudamicana, is not being good enough for Libertadores

Imagine being the Faroe Islands ... they are in the NL tier above San Marino, but didn't win. They managed to avoid relegation there AGAIN, but couldn't win the group. Now they're at fucking 12 points in their World Cup quali group and will at least finish 3rd, so first of the losers, while San Marino takes L after L. But San Marino is the one having a playoff chance because they beat Liechtenstein for once while the Faroe Islands already can do that routinely but now get punished for it. It's obvious that they are MUCH stronger than San Marino despite being of similar size, but they suffer because of that
It's quite the bullshit

This shit system cost us a playoff spot last EURO
Estonia got a playoff spot for hammering Malta and San Marino in NL League D
Georgia who finished behind us in our qualifier group also got a playoff spot from winning League C against Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Gibraltar
They ended up qualifying for the EURO after beating Luxembourg 2-0 and Greece on penalties

I goes against all sport merits and justice.

It's like in the actual World Cup they would make the pots like they always do, but the teams in pot 1 go together, pot 2 with pot 2 and so on.

We would have one group be Brazil, France, Belgium and Spain and antoher one being Cape Verde, Jamaica, New Zealand and Jordan.

Belgium wouldn't qualify to the KOs but Jordan would because they won their group. The same is happening with their current system. I hope that San Marino lets their rival score 20 on them so UEFA can see the bullshit this is and change it.
