>The Giants’ managerial search seems to be nearing an end, with a surprising name emerging from the college ranks. The Athletic’s Andrew Baggarly, Brittany Ghiroli, and Ken Rosenthal report that “the Giants are closing in on hiring” University of Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello as their next skipper. Vitello told The Athletic by text that “there is nothing to confirm” about the news, and the Giants also haven’t commented on the report.

Obviously some owners can and should spend more, but even if a smaller market could invest like 70% of their annual revenue into payroll, for some that's STILL less than what the Dodgers can throw out. The TV deal the Dodgers have ALONE is more than the revenue of some team's entirely. So even if those pesky greedy owners tried spending, they'd still get outbid.

Pepper jack fans absolutely hate the idea that other cheeses have good flavors and consistencies or that fans of those cheeses enjoying eating those cheeses instead of pepper jack. They are cheese totalitarians. To the average pepper jack fan, the only point of cheese is for pepper jack to be on every sandwich and for everyone else to be sad about it. They don’t understand why there are fans of other cheeses. If every other cheese in the the world was eradicated and the entire cheese industry just became 26 versions of pepper jack cheese on every sandwich and burger, pepper jack fans would just smile and say ‘pepper jack’ to themselves over and over and they’d never get bored.

They still have a lot of profit that they could use and adapt though.
Like, many people think every contract will cost the same as Ohtani, he was basically worth two elite players, he was more than worth the money, but money isn't equivalent to talent most of the time and that's what people fail to realize, there will always be under valued talentthat are not being pursued that could complete your team and acquiring them or find them is as important of a skill as the team own talent.
That's why the dodgers are forming a dynasty right now, they are not only rich they have the "outside the game" skills to actually use the money efficiently, BUT it took them years to achieve these kind of skills.
If Shohei is willing to be paid 2m/year, team owners should be able to do the same if they want to win, otherwise there's nothing wrong with admitting that you just want to profit more than you want to win

>Like, many people think every contract will cost the same as Ohtani,
what you don't realize is that this contract is WHY the free agent market is inflated and will get worse. Juan Soto would not have been an 800 million dollar player if Ohtani didn't sign for 700 million. Kyle Tucker would not be estimated to be in the 400-500 million range if Ohtani didn't sign for 700 million. Every single free agent until changes are made, is going to be worth WAY more than they would've all because of this contract, even if they aren't making as much as him and it will keep getting worse. Tarik Skubal is already trending to be worth 400 million, Paul Skenes will probably be even higher, hell I'm betting even fucking Jazz will somehow end up being at least 300-400 million when he's a free agent next year. Most teams are not going to be able to afford these, so they get priced out of "marketable" players and will continue to fade away and see attendance drop even if they started winning more. The Mariners are 1 win away from a world series for the first time in history, won the division for the first time in over 20 years and they LOST attendance this year, because people aren't showing up to watch Jorge Polanco. Imagine the situation even less "popular" teams are in if this is what's happening to a team that's favored to make and possibly win the world series purely because it's just not as popular of a market as a New York or Los Angeles even though Seattle is a pretty good market itself.

A smaller enclosed issue is that Ohtani is so valuable to the Dodgers (I heard some people say he alone is NETTING the Dodgers $74M a year) that it further lessens the impact of CBT tax penalties. Good on GP for aggressively blowing past the fourth tier; I WISH my team would do this, but they don't have nearly the revenue flowing into the Dodgers. So what do you do? Do you make tax tiers even more punishing, which basically punishes every other team more since LA's revenue blows them out of the water? IMO, they need to make draft penalties more immediate. First level of the CBT, loss of 3rd round pick + pool money and -$1M from international signing pool, 2nd level is 2nd + 3rd round pick and -$2M from the signing pool, 3rd round, you get the idea. No resetting penalty bullshit, you go over the line you're in win-now mode.

Teams are retards for thinking anyone but ohtani deserved that amount of money, is not like Juan Soto was close to what Shohei was offering, not even a little, just retard owners doing retarded things
>Most teams are not going to be able to afford these,
And that's fine, my point is that there are plenty of players that are being undervalued at all times, many of the players in the dodger team were very undervalued at some point until they joined the dodgers and obviously showed that money isn't everything.
People will always think teams need the big talent to win, but what you need to win is having ENOUGH talent, this isn't football, this isn't soccer, one player cannot carry you, two or three players with enough talent will win you more games than the most talented player ever.

like who? The offer Betts got from the Red Sox was actually worth more yearly than what he makes on the Dodgers, he just didn't like it because it was for a shorter commitment. Freddie's deal was what he valued himself as and his agent said no just to send him to a big market. Teo wasn't worth much because he just sucked before his breakout year on the Dodgers, and even now I'm sure fans think he's still being paid too much for the mistakes he's made. Glasnow and Snell had their markets fucked because they were questionable and injury prone, which is why the Rays traded them. The only Dodger signing I can say was undervalued was Yams, but that's mainly because people didn't want to invest a ton on a guy who had never pitched in MLB since that's a risk, and they were partly right in 2024, if he was a free agent after 2024, he wouldn't have gotten nearly as much as what the Dodgers are paying him.

> Red Sox was actually worth more yearly than what he makes on the Dodgers, he just didn't like it because it was for a shorter commitment.
Then he wasn't in for the money thus irrelevant for the "money talk" even he was valued
>Freddie's deal was what he valued himself as and his agent said no just to send him to a big market
So he was undervalued and backstabbed by his own team/agent, and for decent reasons too because who could have thought he was yet to peak at 30ish yealr old? If he was that valuable everyone would have bounced at the opportunity and win against the dodgers, is not like freddy was loyal to them or anything.
>teo wasn't worth much because he just sucked before his breakout year on the Dodgers
>Glasnow and Snell had their markets fucked because they were questionable and injury prone, which is why the Rays traded them.
So they were undervalued and dodgers got their money worth
There's also other talent like Will Smith, Kike, even Muncy.
Dodgers have constantly gotten into playoffs before Ohtani came out, they were slowly but surely making their super team, Ohtani just accelerated it all and he was technically undervalued too all things considered
Again, "players" outside the game are as important as the players themselves and dodgers not only have that type of talent, they have the money to actually use it.

I know this is a shitpost but im going to take this as a chance to ramble about how shitty college sports have become. Its so annoying that the people running it have spent the last 5-10 years completely ruining the sports with these stupid conference mergers and such. Fucking USC in the Big Ten is retarded and god damn Cal in the ACC is one of the dumbest things ever. They keep adding more teams to the playoff to make the regular season mean less and less while killing off more classic rivalries. And the worst of it all is its all cause football got too big for the NCAA and its overwhelming size has fucked over all the other college sports. I miss the classic Big East and ACC basketball. Maryland and Nebraska in the Big Ten sucks, Texas and Oklahoma in the SEC sucks, and nobody gives a shit to try and fix any of it.

All that, just for them to get slammed by the Poodres 3-1. Teams are more than just a collection of talented players (Mets). The whole point of salary cap is to stop the top dogs from being as successful compared to the other teams, which is fine.
However, the reason people want salary cap is not for that but because people want to stop a dynasty from happening, which a salary cap wont really do.
Dodgers will still have all the talent even if its implemented, it will only hurt them after the dynasty has already happened but is not like their whole management team and fame will be gone so they could still adapt.

Casual reminder where the Dodgers ownership got its money to buy every available player and have 3 MVPs and multiple CY youngs

The Guggenheim family's fortune was built on a history of exploitation, including brutal labor practices, manipulation of markets, and involvement with colonial extraction industries. These activities formed the basis of the family's immense wealth, which was later used for large-scale philanthropy, such as founding the Guggenheim museums.
Labor exploitation and abuses
The Guggenheim family and their associated mining companies repeatedly used force and employed low-wage workers to suppress strikes and maintain control of their operations.
Forced labor: Migrant workers were subjected to abusive conditions, including having their passports confiscated to prevent them from leaving. This system, particularly in places like Abu Dhabi, effectively functioned as indentured servitude.
Violent suppression of labor: Historically, the family used force against striking mine workers.
Poor working conditions: Reports from construction sites on Saadiyat Island in Abu Dhabi, the location of a planned Guggenheim museum, documented migrant workers living in squalid, overcrowded camps near open sewers.
Colonial and resource exploitation
The Guggenheim family's wealth derived from mining operations that exploited both natural resources and the people who extracted them, often in less developed nations.

Belgian Congo: In 1906, the Guggenheim family established the American Congo Company and the Intercontinental Rubber Company to extract rubber and diamonds. They formed an exclusive business partnership with King Leopold II, known for his exceptionally brutal rule and violent colonial practices in the Belgian Congo.
Chilean copper: The family's Kennecott Copper company, formed in 1907, was a powerful force in Chile. The subsequent nationalization of Chile's copper industry in 1971 dealt a major blow to the company, which then engaged in covert operations to destabilize the Chilean economy.
Global mining empire: The family expanded its ventures into Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, and the Yukon, acquiring immense wealth by controlling mineral resources such as silver, lead, copper, tin, and gold.
Antitrust and market manipulation
The family and its companies faced accusations of antitrust violations and internal financial conflicts of interest.
ASARCO control: After a business battle, the Guggenheims took control of the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO) in 1901, consolidating their power in the industry. The family was accused of using their control of ASARCO for their own benefit, leading to them being voted out of control in 1922.
Financial misconduct: As recently as 2017, the modern firm Guggenheim Partners was accused of putting clients into risky investments and was forced to pay $20 million to settle claims of potential conflicts of interest.
Response to exploitation allegations
The Guggenheim Foundation has faced criticism and pressure to address its legacy and ongoing issues related to exploitation.
Abu Dhabi boycotts: The Guggenheim Foundation has faced boycotts and petitions from human rights organizations regarding the use of exploited migrant labor in constructing the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

The Alaska Syndicate and Kennecott mines
The Alaska Syndicate: Beginning in 1906, Daniel and Simon Guggenheim joined with J.P. Morgan & Co. to form the Alaska Syndicate, with the goal of developing copper claims near the Copper River. The syndicate faced significant opposition from Alaskans who resented their heavy-handed corporate influence and monopoly on transportation.
Kennecott Copper: The syndicate purchased the fabulously rich Bonanza copper claims, forming the Kennecott Mines Company (later Kennecott Copper Corporation). To get the ore out, they constructed the Copper River and Northwestern Railway, a 196-mile railway system.
Harsh conditions: The mine operated in an extremely remote location in the Wrangell-St. Elias mountains, where crews faced brutal cold and relentless snow. This included a long Alaskan winter with temperatures that could drop to 50°F below zero.
The strike and eviction in -30°F weather
Strike for better conditions: In 1916, workers at the Kennecott mine went on strike to protest poor working conditions and low wages.
Brutal eviction: In response, the Guggenheim-controlled company evicted the strikers from their bunkhouses. This forced the men out into the bitter winter, where temperatures dropped to 30°F below zero.
Legacy of labor disputes: The event cemented the Guggenheim family's reputation for being hard on labor, even as Daniel Guggenheim publicly claimed to favor unions.

>Matsui’s affinity for adult videos first came to light in a 2003 Time article. It detailed how he amassed a vast collection of tapes, which he often traded with Japanese reporters. According to one Japanese journalist, Matsui’s taste in adult videos reflects unique cultural institutions in Japan, such as soiled-panty vending machines and no-panties shabu-shabu cafes (are the panties deposited before work at the no-panties cafes in said vending machines? We may never know): “Matsui is a horny guy. All of us [Japanese men] are horny, more or less. But Matsui doesn’t attempt to hide the fact.”

The full extent of Matsui’s collection became known in 2012 when GQ reported that it consisted of more than 55,000 videos. At his first American press event, when Matsui ran out of gifts for the writers, he humorously promised, “I’ll get porn for the rest of you.”

Back in the NPB days, Darvish was in the same class as Tanaka or Iwakuma. Elite, but not the face of the league. Ichiro was the clear number one back then, and Ohtani’s two-way stuff put him in a league of his own. So it’s not really comparable.

There definitely was a gap between the Ichiro and Ohtani eras. After the 2011 earthquake, overall interest in MLB declined in Japan, so Darvish’s early years with the Rangers didn’t attract much attention. Tanaka’s 24–0 season with the Rakuten Eagles and their 2013 championship drew massive attention, partly because their home city, Sendai, had been severely affected by the disaster. From 2014 to 2017, before Ohtani moved to MLB, most Japanese fans were following Tanaka with the Yankees, Uehara with the Red Sox, and Ichiro with the Marlins, while Darvish was sidelined with injuries.
