I have nothing against Wemby on a human level (he does seem like a nice guy) and I've always liked the Spurs. That being said, he sucks to watch. His body is simply too overpowered for the sport of basketball. Watching him play makes the whole sport seem pointless and farcical. I understand that all of these guys are athletic freaks and many of them are in the top 0.0001% in terms of height but with Wemby it's just too much. His highlights look like some big kid jogging up to a 5' plastic hoop and dunking on his little brother with minimal effort. His midrange game is nicer to watch but even that is mostly just "huge ass guy shoots a basic middy over some (relative) manlet who can't do shit." I've tried to hype him up to friends that don't watch basketball and you can tell as they watch him play it's just visually meaningless to them. I have to explain that the hoop is 10' in the air and what they're seeing is crazy but still, their brains are telling them that they're watching a dude jump a few inches off the floor and drop a ball down. People want to see picrel when they think of amazing basketball highlights. Shaq was popular but that was a different situation. He played with Kobe in LA, he had a big personality, and his playstyle revolved 2000's bruiser ball where he smashed centers of similar height all game. This is nothing like what Wemby will be. It's clear that if he stays healthy he'll be a GOAT level player but I think his prime will be a down era for NBA viewership. Maybe I'm wrong and the casuals are going to love the guy, but I'm predicting it will be an extreme version of the Jokic situation where he's breaking the game year after year but only serious NBA fans really care. Also, the (justified) glaze is going to get really annoying. Hearing the commentators go on and on about "WOW ISN'T THIS KID INCREDIBLE?!?!?" while the average viewer is thinking "yeah no shit he's the size of a fucking traffic pole" is not going to be fun.

In THEORY things have all worked out really well for the Mavs. Luka is a fucking traffic cone on defense and I'm not sure he'll ever be anything else, and Kidd is a defense-first coach. It was never the best of fits, and if Flagg develops like everybody hopes he'll be a much better fit for what Kidd is trying to do in Dallas.

That all goes back to the original sin. The main problem wasn't that they traded Luka; it's what they got back for him and the rationale behind it. Ignoring all the cons of a team built around AD/Kyrie, it was supposedly done for a "better" win now 2-3 year window. Without Flagg it was a straight up miss that anybody could have seen coming. With Flagg it still doesn't make sense because realistically he's 2-3 years away at best from being championship caliber.
