Modern football is about amassing capital. Not having pro/rel and having billionaire owners is a good thing in that regard. American franchise leagues are primed for profit and cash maximization, for growth. If your bosses somewhat care about making the league as strong as possible, they can easily succeed in doing so. The US, as a country with a large population (= potential fanbase) and lots of wealth + US soft power, is pretty much the only country that has a real shot at establishing their league next to the top European leagues. The main obstacle is access to the CL, which is the prime European product on the global market. But theoretically, even that might be buyable in the modern world of sports
It will always be a soulless league because it was never supposed to be a real sports league. But it has a chance at becoming a top league in the long run

They have improved WHILE expanding.
They improves in every important metric.
Their youth production continues to improve.
Their buying of young world talent and selling them continues to improve.

Pretending MLS won't be better than the Mexican, Brazilian, and Argentinian leagues is silly if you understand how money works.
Top to bottom they already are just as good if not better.
They're already better than 90% of European leagues.

Having a totally even 30 team league breeds great competition, different styles and approaches, and hopefully lots of youth development.

The fact that a league of 30 equal teams competes with a top heavy Mexican league (though in fairness not as top heavy as other leagues) is a great sign.

If hypothetically MLS changes a rule, tomorrow, to allow 4 DPs instead of 3, and have them not count against the salary cap at all (instead of how it is currently where each DP counts as 500k torwards the salary cap), the league will jump in strength dramatically.
This is a pretty good power lever.

In other words MLS will begin to dominate Mexico and the south American leagues without even needing to change much, and while keeping equality.
