it has more to do with the diligence and rigidity of Germans.
as the cake was intended for the Leichenschmaus (eating and drinking together after a funeral) his wife couldn't even spare one slice to fullfil her husband's dying wish.
it also allures to the mindset of "keine halben Sachen", i.e. not doing things entirely correct, as serving a cake with one missing slice would be bad optics the mother couldn't bare, even if it was for the last wish the father before passing away.
