Prior to 1994 it used to be a top 6.
The ladder has changed multiple times throughout the history of the vfl/afl
Expanding the competition to eventually 20 teams it makes sense to expand the teams competing for finals.

NO ONE likes opening round and the AFL is pushing ahead with that. Why would anyone think the league would listen to what fans want?
