hey anons I'm new to this, I only started watching last basho and didn't watch the whole thing.
There's 42 rikishi in the top division but only 15 days, so not everyone gets to do a bout with each other every basho... and from what I read it sounds like they decide the matches each day as the tournament goes on? If i'm understanding correctly the first few days matchups are determined by ranking, and then after that they give preference to match up people with similar win/loss to force people up and down the records. I'm assuming this means if two guys are both something like 4-10 going into the last day the only reason they didn't face each other on the last bout is because they already did before that? I'm asking because I noticed in september only one guy went 2-13 and the next lowest were a couple that went 5-10.

I used to believe that the first day was supposed to be scripted in the pairings but even the first day goes through some calculations. You also have to add that members of the same stable dont fight each other, neither do brothers.
