>>1176822It annoys me to no end that you can't search /t/'s archives anymore. whenever I find something I have to literally bookmark pages like an animal.
>>1190804Create your own archives and never be beholden to archives run by jews again, self sufficiency is the solution to most troubles
>>1190791For Windows games I use Lutris which is just wine under the hood, but it allows you to setup new directories for each game pretty easily. Every game is in its own self contained directory so if there's malware you can just stop running wine and blow the directory away. You can also add a command prefix before it launches, and I added a prefix to launch firejail, which contains whatever you want depending on your configuration. I have it block internet access.
tl;dr Lutris + firejail
>>1190656wow coo-
>SoC not playableoh well
>>1190868>just stop running wineIt's not "just stop".
You need to nuke all the processes with shitty windows games.
>wine_server>wine_services>...whatever they're called, there's a billion of them and I have never had everything close properly on the games I play, especially on crashes, and I reckon if it was malware it'd be worse. The processes just hang around
I recommend writing a simple script that killall -9's each of them. I don't have it on hand right now it's on my other PC otherwise I'd post it
>>1191068I've seen some crypto miners installed in some games that respawn themselves. It's just a matter of killing the root wine process if you're running through Lutris. It's pretty self contained. I will admit that it took a bit of work to kill everything properly, but it wasn't really a problem and I didn't even have to reboot. Plus all processes that were spawned by the malware were a child of the firejail profile so none of them had internet access.
>>1191068>I recommend writing a simple script that killall -9's each of them. This is a good idea. Sometimes lutris crashes and you have to kill everything manually in htop. Its such a pain.
>>1191353Firejail sounds useful. This isn't included in Lutris by default is it?
>>1191682It gets a bit troublesome in my use case too. I like to run foobar2000 in wine because the audacious winamp-like skins are horrendous, then the script ends my music player too. I'm too lazy to go about it systematically with Lutris or bottles, because I run my old CD games on the same wine prefix or rarely in a script that changes the prefix, it just werks. I stopped bothering with completely new games entirely - half the time they are bogged in Windows too.
Heroic Games Launcher and Steam have their own systems both of which seem to just be working.
I even ran a multiseat system that ran wine games. I basically ran from the same symlinked data files skeleton and just left "real folders" for the configuration files/saves, did this with AoE2 and Diablo. You can imagine how things go down when one instance crashes... Would be very nice if Windows allowed multiseat, however it's not something people care about, instead they'll write another horrendous music player for Linux. Native games seem to consider this use case at least a bit... basic things like doom or quake ports run just fine. But wouldn't it be better for there to exist a "hotseat" server-client protocol? You connect with LAN onto the same PC in for example gzdoom (I know it's not meant for multiplayer at all). Sadly the whole ecosystem is seemingly steering away from this and it's mentioned rarely. Does Wayland work well in multiseat to just show basic desktops? I have no idea.
>>1191719>Firejail sounds useful. This isn't included in Lutris by default is it?No, it's just a sandbox application for Linux. I have a profile that cuts off network access and use that as a pre-run step before launching a game. It's useful for more than just wine. Anything you want to sandbox you can do with a customized profile. Give the application only the permissions you want it to have. As a best practice I run the firejail profile even if it's a native Linux game. I don't need random executables doing weird shit.
Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I can never find Linux versions of Jackbox games.

Sometimes they require some long-outdated lib (stdc et al) not available on current repos. I usually download an old version package, extract manually and place it inside game folder. If that doesn't work, use LD_PRELOAD in start.sh.
>>1206310I'm on Fedora 37 for my personal system and run Debian 11 on all my virtualized servers.
I think I have Unreal Tournament 2004 for linux, if anyone is interested.

Anyone got the Linux native version of Nuclear Throne?
>>1176378No way either of the companies would waste the time they dominate their markets and Linux isn't the slightest concern to them.
All the possibility of bad PR and possible legal ramifications, literally no advantage. Business make money and targeting the tiny linux market ain't gonna make them any money.
>>1176378>how virus free linux isare you retarded? linux is no safer than windows or mac unless you're a briandead retard clicking on every pretty icon you find online. the fact is that gnu linux's learning curves leaves many users with giant holes in their system that would otherwise be baby-sat by microsoft. you may be less of a target for random online malware, but don't act like a real life attacker can't get into a linux box. in fact, they'll probably do it twice as fast as a windows or mac pc.
>>1226997That's funny I was literally just talking to my brother about this yesterday. But he was telling me Linux never had a patch to catch up to the windows version. But I was telling him that the patch in the Editor's Choice CD just makes any version of UT2K4 linux native. Am I right or do I need your torrent?
anyone has Rome Total War Remastered? the only version i can find is outdated and it seems that you can't manually update it from files
Anyone has the Fear and Hunger games? Trying to use wine on RPGMaker games is such a fucking annoyance.
Did Bump have a Linux port?
>>1206310Void linux, easy to use and very deblooted for semi beginner who wants to get to the core of linux without it being too overwhelming
>>1175569 (OP)Linux game torrents are such a braindead idea.
1) Most good games on Linux are FOSS and available in your distro's repo to begin with.
2) Commercial Linux games (Factorio, KSP etc) are almost all worth paying for.
3) Malware for Linux will be bespoke and is unlikely to be caught with consumer scanning tools like it is on Windows
4) Flinging binaries around like a toddler is one of the things you're not supposed to be doing on Linux.
I have seen a lot of people shilling Garuda as the new "gaming distro" how much of that is true?
>>1237367What even is a gaming distro? Something with a desktop environment that resembles Windows?
Don't think my question deserves a thread so i' gonna ask here.
How does scene groups obtain game files. Do they buy them all first? Or are there ways to somehow download games from steam without buying them first?

I sought specifically native, not Wine torrents of games I like, and they have been problematic. Particularly had issues with Cities Skylines, it crashed the first time I tried, the second time I changed it to use 8GB of RAM but it got stuck at a loading screen. Also had issues with Project Zomboid having graphical glitches and one time running too slowly to be playable, which should not be happening with a game that has PZ's specs on a computer with a Xeon, 16G memory, and a graphics card.
I would rather install Windows at this point than continue wrangling with jc141

you already have dwarfs in the AUR (not to mention that could just be left to user discretion as usual and just packaged as tar.gz, linux already has enough people who think they know what the user wants), and the AUR barely cares about what type of software goes there as long as its not malware (you literally have pirated minecraft in there), why do they need their own repo with their own versions of wine? its completely pointless since they still package dependencies per game.

>>1227628yeah, that's simply not true. firstly, >baby-sat by microsoft implies that it's safe which it isn't. In fact the problem is the closed code itself which makes it way harder to security check. Moreover, it is a well known fact that there were cases in which they detected a fundamental security hole by design in a core piece of software which was crucial to the main system and couldn't be fixed easy, so the firm policy stated that this security issue wasn't a real threat because it would require a deep knowledge of the code which wasn't public.
Of course this example is from the early 2000s and many things have changes ever since but closed code should never be considered trustworthy from the very beginning.
Same for "anti virus" programms which often need root access in many cases to work properly but because of being closed source and gaining root access they are a potential threat either because of incompetence or malevolence of the programmers.

Just go to rutracker.
I'm not sure if I should take this to /g/, considering I'm using this both for games and software
Using gamescope, I've noticed that context menus cause the game or software rendered window to shrink, to keep the context menu in bounds of the gamescope window, instead of growing away from the edge of the gamescope window, as it properly does in Linux and in Windows.
I've also noticed that the parent context menu branch disappears if I open a child, leaving the child floating. But that doesn't bother me as much as the application window constantly resizing if a context menu touches the gamescope window edge.
Using --force-windows-fullscreen and --force-composition makes it stop, and make context menus flex correctly inside the window, even if it's not quite sized correctly. They still disappear, though.
Seriously, though, fuck wayland lol
Experimenting with packaging old games in flatpaks as I personally find setting up and fiddling with Wine prefixes (even with Bottles/Lutris) to be a pain. Feel like this route has potential. Skips over setting up the wine prefix setup process as well as the game/patches install process. Hoping in time to get a number of these done and seed some sort of flatpak repo folder (to take advantage of flatpak's native deduping).
First test here is Civilization 2. Uses a launcher to specify some additional options and includes a popular fan patch and full game soundtrack.
This file *should* just load from your software manager assuming you have flatpak setup (all distros out-of-the-box should except Ubuntu and its spins). Only tested it on my own system (GNOME/Fedora) would appreciate any feedback, I'm new to flatpak, and the launcher script seems fine but was like 99% written by copilot lol
Also never used these file hosters before, apologies if they're shit.

>>1281894>12th genDude I manged to run it on 3rd gen intel.
Hat to disable DX2V though.
My iGPU doesn't even have vulkan support.
Also any suggestions for games that I can run on this craptop?
And anyone manged to get commandos working under wine?
>>1281894you call that a non-gaming laptop?
>>1361604Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (2004). often abbreviated as vtmb. be sure to check the pc gaming wiki as this is a game you absolutely want to use an unofficial patch with since it released in a pretty buggy state
>>1361595>>1281894How do you get it to run on such old hardware?
>>1281894What's this frame and gpu monitor?
>>1363438i mean, the game came out in 2004 on a beta version of the source engine (they were making this while valve was making source/hl2) and this laptop is from 2008. admittedly this is the lowest end model of a business laptop that had no business running games when it was new, but it's not like the game runs well on this either, still goes to show how efficient wined3d has gotten though huh (this laptop is way too old for vulkan so no dxvk)
>>1363439https://github.com/flightlessmango/MangoHud
>>1363438and if you want a game that really shouldn't run on it, try this one
>>1363445NTA. but I got thinkcenter and was thinking of doing light gaming on it.
How'd arch and fluxbox regarding resources?
>>1363450i've got a 2013 thinkcentre as well. played some spyro reignited on it. at low resolution it ran pretty well on the integrated graphics (like 30-50fps)
fluxbox is really light, it's using 9M of ram atm. i do prefer openbox's window handling however. fluxbox comes with the panel so it's my go-to "i just need something now" wm even though i've ended up using this laptop quite a bit
>>1363450>>1363452i should point out, lowering ram usage isn't really the goal here, while it's often correlated, the real goal is to minimise cpu usage. reason is that ram usage can be swapped out, it only becomes a problem when the stuff in ram wants to use the cpu, because then it needs to be swapped back into ram. so really, it's less about having smaller programs and more about having fewer programs running
arch is good, though that doesn't mean all that much since arch has no default desktop configuration, it's about as good as any other gnu/linux-type setup /if/ you do it from a minimal base. if you want something even lighter than that you could try alpine, it's got wine, too. with 4G of ram though this laptop is not what i'd consider light on resources
>>1363727Yeah, but as you said, if you're using the laptop as is then lower ram is better.
Also DE uses CPU if it's something like gnome/KDE
>>1363730yea, as mentioned it's usually correlated anyway, it's practically a technicality. i'm just drunk
big DEs like gnome and kde are a no-go if you want to keep resource usage down, they just aren't meant for that. they trade resources for "nice to haves". distros that ship with one of them by default are even worse. people don't realise just how much /stuff/ operating systems have running in the background. not to say it's pointless however, if you've never done a properly minimal os install before you'll very quickly find out just how much stuff is done for you. it's eye-opening
>>1363731Pretty much what you've said.
There's a reason why steamOS is running KDE.
I've had various issues with different DE/WM and the various combinations of system tools.
Those big DEs are working OOTB for a reason.
In honestly if you want to game on linux, go with KDE/Gnome + bottles with proton-ge as runner
For smooth experience, max ram and use nvme.
>>1363740well that's not at all what i said or suggested. obviously things like steamos give you kde because it's easy to use and nice to look at. no normal person would appreciate if they were given say openbox with taskbar, no automounter, no network/sound applet, no persistent clock, no start-adjacent application launcher, etc. i could go on for a couple posts if i wanted to
all i meant was that as long as said programs are cpu-light, it's not a big deal.

Why bother with linux port when you can just pack a whole bottle?
>>1364894because wine breaks something for every release and it's better to double click a game and let it open instead of being a fucking nerd with tweaking and wine prefixes.
And don't tell me that linux has no stable api/abi because i'll fucking kill you, i can run 2004 linux game binaries with native wayland and pipewire thanks to sdl
people parrot this blatant lie every now and then simply because they are too ignorant or mossad agents paid by microsoft
>>1190868
>>1364900also there's not been any practical glibc abi break since the linuxthreads->nptl transition days, the one dumbass people always complain about only broke a fucking anticheat, that are pieces of software that always break with slight changes, why do i see no one complaining securom or starfoce not working on windows11
>>1364901>why do i see no one complaining securom or starfoce not working on windows11it's ok when windows does it. anyone who thinks all windows games work forever in windows doesn't play older games nor has spent time on pcgamingwiki
>>1364903on linux when it comes to patching it's usually swapping old sdl libraries or LD_PRELOADing some hook library
>>1364894I understand that people use bottles when proton doesn't work, but proton is pretty fucking good for most games.
>>1364904one of the oldest AAA games for linux i've run on modern linux is ut2004, and all it needs to run libstdc++5 and an OSS wrapper, since neither of those ship with modern linux anymore. other than that it works just fine. going back to ut99 however i wasn't able to do, because the linux version of '99 only shipped with glide support, and i wasn't able to find a wrapper for that. though there are up to date binaries of ut99 available anyway so there's no need to run the original loki release
>>1364983oss can still run on modern linux through osspd, some years ago i was thinking on making a userspace LD_PRELOAD wrapper implementation that routes oss calls to sdl, i think wouldn't be that difficult, i've already made something similar for evdev gamepads->sdl
as for libstdc++ just look up for it on old debian archives, i'm sure it runs because i've already tested it for simcity 3k
>>1365001i thought my post was clear that i could run ut2004 without much trouble
>>1365002it was for the sake of explaining to wine abusers dumbfucks reading this
is linuxrulez on archive safe
>>1364917Bottles can have any runner including steam free proton.
>>1365011Ah, that's pretty similar to Lutris, which uses GE proton. I was under the impression that bottles mostly used its own custom runner.
>>1365195It has.
Which uses low ram compared to wine.
Any idea how to get CS:GO?
I have shit PC and it can't handle CS2.
>>1365011Had a very bad experience with Bottles. The scripts are not very well maintained, used one of them to install the Epic Games launcher just so I can add my friends and it took like a million years to open up in low resolution with the wrong cursor (because flatpak) and died past the loading screen. Used the script on Lutris and it works as if it's a native app. Weird as hell. Also it still has the libAdwaita thing of not using the server side cursor even though Flatseal is also libAdwaita and doesn't do that
>>1368969Yeah, you need to be well versed with flatpak permession.
I used the AUR version and it was much better IMO
