What are you talking about? This upscale is BEAUTIFUL. Look at all the smooth lines and lack of grain. Not even an actual remaster could achieve that level of fidelity. We get all of these massive improvements and not even a third of the image looks distorted. Keep in mind this is just using the technology we currently have, meaning in the future (2 weeks) it will look even better.
Now if only it were also interpolated to 60fps...

Here's an idea, OP. Your upscales are decent, but look "too clean" if you know what I mean. How about trying to add a light film grain filter? The old episodes had filmgrain, so adding film grain to your upscales, makes them more accurate to the original

theyre the same for the obvious reason but theyre both also ass for the same reason - interpolated animation completely destroys any weight in motion for the sake of a shallow smoothness, and ai upscales similarly remove any of the weight or sharpness in brush strokes making it all uncannily smooth for the sake of a clearer image

like maybe its cause cause im a mildly trained artist but even ignoring the anatomy, perspective and lighting mistakes prevalent in ai art i can almost always clock it from the shitty brush strokes alone

You're a retard who encoded the video as 8 bit, which basically ruins all the effort you put into upscaling...
Why would you waste so much time upscaling, only to handicap it with 8 bit, causing massive banding and blocking?
Look at the shoulder, there's so many fucking blocks.
And by the looks of it, you used ESRGAN's AnimeVideoV3. Sure it's clean, and many might prefer it, but it ruins fine detail, like the background.
Fine for porn, but not anime. Use AnimeJaNai instead.
Also you're dogshit at making comparisons, you can't even compare the correct frame...
Plus the aspect ratio gets fucked, just look at the first comparison you posted.

Maybe it's the best ATTEMPT at an upscale that currently exists, but it's by far the best one can get.
For any of you that want to give this a serious attempt and care about quality, use VideoJaNai with AnimeJaNai model and encode with -pix_fmt yuv420p10le to avoid banding/blocking issue.

AI is literally a tool and plenty of art made with it looks as good (if not better) than real artists. Upscales can also enhance how things look
The problem is, HOW you use it. Sure AI art looks bad, if you don't know how to use it or use garbage like NAI V1, SD1.5, AOM, etc etc.
Same with upscales like the shit I just explained above, badly encoded and using a model that vastly changes how things look.
Use AnimeJaNai and you get slightly cleaner lines without fucking anything up.

Try handbrake to reduce size. From what I've tryed, you can reduce by over than half without significant quality loss.
