I've been using ChatGPT for brainstorming and it works great as long as you shoot down bad ideas it provides. I have a pretty outlandish idea for a setting but it's not confused by it.

Fuck you retard, if you want actually useful advice with examples.
>>95338975 (OP)Does anyone have any suggestions for resources on elemental creatures or spells beyond just rewatching Avatar?
>>95364851TV Tropes is not useful advice. It can be useful in worldbuilding (e.g. if you want to do X thing, it can help you find similar concepts in other works for inspiration or implications), but it does not meaningfully give advice.
>>95370951>TV Tropes is not useful advice. All right buddy retard.
Yes, if you're either a double-digit IQ OR an pajeet/chinaman who needs to have it spelled out in a literal step-by-step instruction, I agree. However, someone who has the barest modicum of theory of mind is going to be able to extrapolate worldbuilding rules out of the myriad of examples listed there.
>>95371409Do you know what advice is, retard? Do you think Eclipse Phase is worldbuilding advice since you can use the ideas from there in your own setting?
>>95371714The setting bit, yes.
>>95371714He's right, though. People don't have to spell out advice directly to you for it to be advice. For example, someone could say "oats help to reduce cholesterol", and despite it being a fact, a reasonable person would conclude "it's good for me to eat more oats to deal with my high cholesterol". An autist would need it specifically told to them before they took the advice.
It's sort of like the old joke "there are two kinds of people in the world: those who can extrapolate..."
>>95371409>However, someone who has the barest modicum of theory of mind is going to be able to extrapolate worldbuilding rules out of the myriad of examples listed there. He's agreeing with you there

Just don't get effluviaretarded and it's all copacetic.
Now that we're disclaimer'd out, I'll suggest you do some cosmological rip off of some made up RNG gods, make 'em do whatever to each other. Write it down, strip off the godnames while keeping the listed effects results etc. Then designate the elements and other bits of the distribution. There you have your elemental set. You get the idea, I'd expect. If you do it, put in best girl.
>>95338975 (OP)Rather than trying to build a world to have adventures in, start by asking "what sort of games does my group want to play?" and then making three or four simple adventures. They don't need to be grandiose or complex. A simple "recover stolen property" or "find a missing individual" or "drive off a nearby nuisance or threat" is sufficient.
You'll find that the worldbuilding will fall out of that as a natural consequence.

>>95419698Rare commodities like silk and spices?
>>95419739Silk came to my mind. Are small scraps of them useful or valuable? Spices and salt are a good call.
>>95419698I don't know if it's exotic enough for your taste, but I'll nominate some kind of tool like arrow heads, axe heads, or knife blades.
In early stages they'd be actual usable tools, with blades presumably kept blunt while in circulation and only sharped if to actually be used.
Over time, this might become standardized and centralized into a form that's really just tool-shaped pieces of metal, of little practical use as anything other than a store of bronze or whatever, simply because the idea of these items being used as currency is so deeply ingrained into cultural consciousness by that point.

learn about real and fictional magic systems and yoink the cool ideas. be as esoteric and idiosyncratic as you want but remember to actually have a plan to represent your ideas through mechanics. for example, i wanted my magic to be uncontested (only caster rolls) when used on inanimate objects, but contested (caster and target roll against each other) when used on something alive. i eventually settled on the soul inside of creatures being inherently stubborn and resistant to change, with more powerful souls getting more dice to resist with. this logically means creatures without souls or very weak ones being susceptible to magic.
basically i started with what i wanted and worked backwards to justify it.
>>95348642look up videos and books about different mythologies online and listen to them. don't be afraid to be weird. irl religions are full of wacky shit that don't fit their popular image. for example these could be wrong lol Catholics believe in Transubstantiation which means the bread and wine eaten during a Eucharist literally turns into the flesh and blood of Christ when consumed. jesus made a whip and beat the shit out of some people shitting up a church which doesn't fit the common, almost hippy image jesus has now. use of magic to control and command demons was practiced by some Christians and wasn't believed to be a sin for a time.

They came from the Visigoth kingdoms, fleeing from the muslim invaders in the 8th century, to this large archipelago in the Atlantic, where they settled and largely remained isolated for 800 years or so, typically split in 4-7 clans. Only during the age of exploration did they become part of the world at large again, largely interacting with French colonials, and Ottoman slavers. Their practice of Arianist Christianity, which had become heathen and extinct in the rest of the world centuries ago, created a great deal of friction with European powers. Despite this, they managed to become relatively economically wealthy in acting as a trading post and rest stop for various travellers across the Atlantic. To protect themselves from being dominated by foreign interests, they eventually united under a single flag in the mid 18th century, and undertook a strong unified effort to modernize/industrialize after witnessing the weapons and machines which would be used in the Spanish-American war at the end of the 19th.

>>95348642A good thing to do for that is read a lot of greek mythology and religious texts/holy books. there is actually a lot of different takes on what a "God" is, pagan gods are generally an extension of animism, a personification of their domain, Zeus as the sky father, Poseidon as the sea king, Hades as the Earth lord. ext monotheistic gods are usually the all powerful gods and are usually gods from a pagan pantheon elevated to that spot. examples are Yhwh, Aten, Sol invictus. A variant of this is a Henotheistic pantheon, where one supreme deity is elevated but not at the expense of denying other gods exisance

Frankly, a lot of plot design, character design, etc. is a matter of pure taste. I'm the sort of person who focuses in on bones and fills in the gaps with history and my own understanding of how settings work, so I mostly take cues or bounce the ideas off my own understanding/look at HOW they think and WHAT they consider when designing, rather than their opinions. If you're looking for hard geological ideas or raw evolutionary guidebooks, that's way outside the scope of YouTubers.
>>95451936>who focuses in on bones What does that mean?
>>95456856Bones as in the structures that everything else hangs off of- not the fine details that flesh out a setting, not the things that make them all work like hard mechanics or specific characters, the 'hard points' that need to be filled in in order to form the foundation of a setting.
>What is the overall tone and presentation of the setting- is it wild and free, conspiratorial and secretive, desperate and dangerous?>What are the metaphysics like (broadly)?>What resources and technology are present?>Is there a 'standard culture' with subcultures and factions, many very different cultures, wild differences between areas?>Are there major conflicts, are there minor conflicts everywhere, or is the setting at relative peace?>What kind of character archetypes would be at home in this setting?>Where do the events you want to focus on MOST take place, physically?

Anybody who needs "resources" to worldbuild is a fucking hylic who can't imagine an apple, doesn't have an internal monologue, and can't say how he would feel if he didn't have breakfast yesterday. Worldbuilding is piss easy. I made pic related in like 2 hours. Then I took another 2 hours to come up with all the stuff in the pastebin, then over the course of the week, in my free time, came up with some minor additions and edits, but that was like 10% compared to the 90% I did on the first pass.
https://pastebin.com/raw/80nbEPrH
The one thing I used ChatGPT for was to turn the prophecy I wrote out into a more poetic and mysterious sounding thing, and honestly, I might redo it myself manually because I don't love it.

>>95481965>implying the various "AIs" are anything more than glorified text extenders
>>95478539This thing called "the internet." You have to be a LOT more specific than that. Temples might be the building where laws are passed, where an assembly meets, where taxes are collected, where ritual magic is cast, where the people just kinda hang out, where the poor are fed...
"Temple" is "these buildings are somehow connected to magical beliefs." But the reality is that they never exactly existed like that. They had very specific, government functions. We call it a temple, sure. But to them? It was most-likely a tax assayer's office.
Fun bonus fact? Rome didn't persecute Christians for being Christian (mostly). They persecuted them for refusing to pay taxes. Your taxes, in Rome, included making required sacrifices. Christians refused to sacrifice to Roman gods, meaning that they refused to pay taxes. That's why they got persecuted (initially and some of the time, at least).

Lost and scattered to the winds/water. >Hydrokratic Interface - The command throne of the entirety of the dark dwarf water network. then I pasted it into ChatGPT and said "Make this sound more like a prophecy and make it open to multiple interpretations." Then I got the text all the way at the bottom of the link.

>>95345080There's a glut of resources when it comes to inspiration, a lot of it not even tabletop related: books, movies, comics, and more. A lot of my characters and worlds are based on various media I've absorbed. As far as purpose-built design docs and world-building guides, there are a few websites that operate like wikis for your world. I'd considered utilizing those myself, but that's actual "work" work.
You can always consult with AI and see if it can help you brainstorm ideas and build up background stuff. In that same vein, you can ask it to suggest relevant documents and books that some anons may not think of, and unlike the aforementioned anons, they have infinite patience for queries. If you don't know where to start and need help organizing, AI can probably help you plan projects as well.
>>95441960The problem that caused inflation under the Song and Yuan was just a bunch of minor economic problems. They tried to curb inflation by backing the paper with more coins, rather than reducing the supply of the paper. They tried to make the papers expire rather than just replacing for natural breakage (notes being lost or destroyed). Etc.
>>95459506>What about things like guides for creating fantasy races and/or magic systems, do you have any other suggestions there? On fantasy races: https://2cradle2grave.substack.com/p/race-design-in-ttrpgs is the only one I've seen.
For magic systems, there's probably some Brandon Sanderson lectures, though he does a rather particular type ("hard" magic systems, where there are clear explicit rules); if you want to do magic systems of that type, he's a decent start.
>>95492072AI-produced material is uncopyrightable but, inshallah, your worldbuilding includes enough original elements.
Basically think of the AI chunks of your work as equivalent to Bible quotes or Sherlock Holmes: you can copyright the parts that aren't the Bible quotes or the concept of Sherlock Holmes.
>>95572705>On fantasy races: https://2cradle2grave.substack.com/p/race-design-in-ttrpgs is the only one I've seen. Thanks! Shame that there aren't more, but at least this is a start!
>>95572717>AI-produced material is uncopyrightableWhat if you create something with AI and then alter it on your own?
>>95579145Then you're at the mercy of whatever judge you get if you sue someone for using your shit. They'll get to determine what percentage was actually your original ideas vs ai shit, and then if they decide it's not enough you lose your copyright and waste the money on the court case.
>>95579145>What if you create something with AI and then alter it on your own? What if you take the complete text of A Study In Scarlet and alter it on your own?
Depends on how much, and only the original parts are copyrightable. For example, the creator of Zarya of the Dawn filed for copyright on her AI art comic, and got an edit that said "only the arrangement/text [human part] are copyrightable, the pics aren't."

>>95623030Thanks! This is a gold mine!
I'm trying to worldbuild up a society of three vastly different-sized races living together in harmony. What should I consider? Here are some of my thoughs, if anyone cares to take a look, and I'd appreciate any word of guidance or pointing out mistakes/considerations I've missed.
For the sake of simplicity let's call them Gnomes (2-3 feet), Guys (6-8 feet) and Giants (36+ feet)
>Gnomes are most numerous, but majority of everything is made for Guys' scale since they are the comfortable middlepoint. There is usually only few Giants per city, or even only one.
>Due to their strength and height Giants help in building structures and shaping the land, sometimes offering general defense against threats which can be dealt with with size alone. They are seldom born, nearly all of them are ancient and considered very wise. They are most often sages, judges, or even Rulers.
>Gnomes, due to their small size, are considered expert craftsmen with keen eyes and fingers for details larger races can't achieve. They are also good at finding small things, like wholesome herbs, signs of disease, and thus are considered good doctors.
>Guys, being the middleground take majority of all other work, from farming to crafts which don't require particular precision. They also form the army force against threats which can't be dealt with by giants
What are other size considerations and possible strengths and weaknesses? I admit that I had to stretch a little bit to come up with even one thing Gnomes would be good for. What could be a useful skill/advantage of little folk?
>TL;DR What small dude could do that's useful for a big dude and vice versa
>>95504846thanks for the tip, friend! :D
>>95619519No problem. Actual Venusian levels of solar radiation would render the planet mostly desert (though this is still more inhabitable than actual Venus).
>>95631865What are your thoughts on building an entire planet and solar system (optional) from scratch, and generating its entire history to current day?
I've been thinking of doing it since it adds some logical consistency to the world, which is something that I desire (not always relevant with certain settings, like Lord of the Rings where the gods just made the world look that way simply because they wanted to). Also, lots of eyes will (hopefully) be seeing my project, as I intend to eventually sell it commercially.
Some resources I've come across and delved into that might be of potential interest for some of you for are:
- Worldbuilding Guide for an Earth-like Planet -
by Madeline James
https://www.madelinejameswrites.com/worldbuilding-guide
Seems to be a good resource, and the least detailed I'd personally would be okay with.
- Worldbuilder's Log -
by Artifexian
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLduA6tsl3gyiX9fFJHi9qqq4RWx-dIcxO
Kind of a good sweet spot. Uses Madeline James's guide as a base, and adds onto it. Notes when he diverges from it. Presented entirely in video form, and has a free Excel spreadsheet/calculator that can crunch a lot of the numbers for you. Also has a lot of older videos on various worldbuilding subjects.
- Worldbuilding Pasta -
by Worldbuilding Pasta
Pic related, and general theme of this post. Is currently working on a systematic replacement for Kรถppen-Geiger climate modeling - since it only models for Earth climates - to account for climates that could exist on inhabitable, but alien worlds. Downside is that because he's working from the bottom-up in such exhausting scientific detail, he currently does not have as complete of a guide to a world that is more societal facing. For example, Artifexian's guide is currently at the point of determining where iron deposits would be located on a planet. But when Worldbuilding Pasta's done, it will likely be the de facto highly detailed guide for creating new, believable worlds.

>>95572705>>95459506Note that Sanderson focuses on magic systems from a narrative point of view, that's what, "Sanderson's Three Laws of Magic," are about.
1. An author's ability to solve conflict with magic is proportional how well the reader understands that magic.
2. Limitations are more important than Power.
3. You should extrapolate from a magic system before adding to it.
For #3, it's basically expand what you have before adding more.
Honestly, I think these three laws are golden. You CAN break them and bend them, but only if you know what you're doing. I mean, #1 also includes, "don't have the DMPC solve everything," in it.
>>95679019Honestly I would argue that those same rules are applicable to worldbuilding in general:
>if an element of the setting will be relevant to the plot, ensure that the audience is informed of this element ahead of time (else you risk it feeling like a deus ex machina or just making shit up as you go along, rather than a natural thing to happen)>in addition to how people use the things available to them, consider how they make do without the things they lack access to>where elements differ from the real world (or whatever other reference you use), consider the consequences of this (such as how people might exploit these elements to their benefit, or attempt to work around the elements' hindrances) and in turn the consequences of those consequences

>>95338975 (OP)>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHSEFMYjbnE
>>95599482>>95602618>>95631865Venus also rotates in such a way that its day is longer than its year, A Venusian day is 243 Earth days and its year is 225 Earth days. That with very little axial tilt means its seasons would be just day and night.
If you wanted to make it habitable maybe there could be something in its L1 Lagrange point to block out some solar energy, Venus' L1 is about a million km towards the sun, so anything you want to put there would have to be wider than the planet itself. Also could build a ring system to help provide shade
>>95679019>You CAN break them and bend them, but only if you know what you're doing.I would love to hear more on what you mean here.
>>95682544Also, don't forget the Zeroth Law:
>Err on the side of AWESOME.
>>95695360>I would love to hear more on what you mean here.A common example used for this general principle is Ender's Game. It's a standard rule of writing is "don't start with dialogue," because we have no attribution or context. However, Ender's Game starts with dialogue, but it's okay because it's people we don't care about talking about the protagonist.
For specifically those rules, the reasons are basically:
1. You're not supposed to deus ex machina your protagonist out of trouble because it's unsatisfying.
2. There's more ability for the character to be clever and interesting and have struggles when you're working around a power with limitations, than when you're just roflstomping. (Sanderson's typical example is his own "pushing/pulling" against metals power, which is more limited than being Magneto, but produces interesting interactions like creating "highways" of coins you push against to stay in the air.)
3. Less is more.
>>95635391Canโt believe this is the only mention of Artifexian ITT. We used to have extremely long arguments about him on this board.
Iโm firmly in the camp that you ought to know why geography is the way it is in real life before you do something retarded like putting a forest on the border of a desert.
I also think it just makes things easier once youโve mastered it. You can look at a map youโve drawn and understand where the climates youre looking for would be, youโll naturally get some variation and landmarks and features. Itโs just very convenient, almost like letting a simulation generate for you but in your head like the good old days
>>95696086>before you do something retarded like putting a forest on the border of a desert. It literally doesn't matter. In WoW the barrens was directly between mulgore grasslands and razorfen swamp/forest

>>95696762Know the rules before breaking the rules. If you do retarded shit because you donโt know better I will judge you
>>95699353It is good to know the rules that you are breaking, this is true. It is a good principle. However, what you clearly don't understand is that there is a more primal rule that precedes that principle. You will never make good worldbuilding for something you don't care about. You can make passable worldbuilding, sufficient to fill the space, but never anything that's worth mentioning for longer than 10 seconds in any given format. Since it's so mediocre it might even be a waste of time. So why bother? If you don't care enough about that thing, your players are certainly not going to care since you set the tone, quality and engagement.
You are never going to convince someone who actually cares about that thing to care about your rudimentary knowledge. If it's the bare basics they will just glance over it as common sense. Simultaneously, if you don't mention it at all, that person will also just glance over it and even fill in the blanks with something more interesting than what you could imagine... because you don't really have an interest in that thing.
Thus you should always highlight that which you care about and for that you already know the rules and already know how to break them. The real rule is consistency within the internal logic of the world, not knowing the rules.

in the generator what I do is to change the color scheme so that the roofs are a solid color that can easily be keyed. I can only speak about Photoshop but the tool is called there is Color Range, quick google search says there's a "select by color" option. From there I apply different effects to this selection. You can even go deep enough and cut up and select slices of the districts to have more control of the shape of the district. Keep in mind you can also do this in the watabou website but I've never gotten the hang of manipulating the shape of the city inside the tool.

>>95338975 (OP)No. Absolutely not.
In the short term, using these resources seems like a good diea, but in the long-term you may as well be using Chat GPT or some shit to do the same job, because they both feed into the same consequences.
When you rely on generic, plagiarist, self-referential tools to define your fantasy, you are feeding into a circular ouroboros.
Your world will be a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy.
Following the rules will make the world easier, not better. And you ARE going to wind up with a 5e D&D sloppaverse.
It's vastly better to just do your own thing without buying all these guides from third party grifters with shit advice. Again, I don't think Chat GPT is going to give you a good world, but if you're just going to follow some shitty advice that leads to the same outcome anyway, just save yourself the fucking time.

It's not in the global rules, I assume it's for rules enforcement. You can't tell if a post is offtopic if it's all

>>95873926Not him but been working on something stupid for shits and giggles. What got me motivated to get into gear was developing a character concept I got from a dream.
The character, a young tomboyish street urchin whoโs incredibly insecure and compensates for it by acting tough. Basically a tsundere without a clear object of affection. Sheโs also south east asian or whatever Iโm gonna call them when I get around to it. Thatโs the fetish, I guess.
Itโs a cyberpunk world except machine gun arms arenโt there yet, just mostly corporatism and inequality. Her specific neck of the woods is impoverished which developed a meritocratic society as they didnโt have time for gender roles, whoever can get shit done gets it done. Thatโs basically the political ideology.
Finally, our intrepid brown skinned flat chested girl tries to rob a U-Store It with her friends and is sent to juvie where sheโs popular with the guards since who doesnโt want to see wannabe tough girl break down and cry? Here she meets a girl from across the river from a wealthy corporate background doing a stint for joy riding and crashing a Porsche. But thatโs a lie! Sheโs actually a magical girl and it was the monster of the week who wrecked that Porsche. She untransformed and took the heat rather than reveal the truth. So magical girl, being the kind and compassionate girl she is, sees the brooding Filipino girl who is well reclusive and always getting picked on by the guards decides to be nice to her and yada yada, opens up, they be friends. Thatโs the magic.
As for the setting itself, itโs Earth but with all the names changed and Cthulhu Mythos is the one true religion with all the other ones being wrong or interpretations of the periodic eldritch nonsense that happens. Secret cults among the corporate executives leads to their daughters accidentally becoming magical girls.
I basically took my scattered notes and shoved them all in the same place just to see if I can.
>>96003568Some of that is me, and I was just trying to add some more options since the other anon didn't seem to have seen the suggestions. Here, have another one.
