June 2nd in (mostly) military history:

455 โ€“ Sack of Rome: Vandals enter Rome, and plunder the city for two weeks.
1098 โ€“ First Crusade: The first Siege of Antioch ends as Crusader forces take the city; the second siege began five days later.
1676 โ€“ Franco-Dutch War: France ensured the supremacy of its naval fleet for the remainder of the war with its victory in the Battle of Palermo.
1763 โ€“ Pontiac's Rebellion: At what is now Mackinaw City, Michigan, Chippewas capture Fort Michilimackinac by diverting the garrison's attention with a game of lacrosse, then chasing a ball into the fort.
1774 โ€“ Intolerable Acts: The Quartering Act of 1774 is enacted, allowing a governor in colonial America to house British soldiers in uninhabited houses, outhouses, barns, or other buildings if suitable quarters are not provided.
1780 โ€“ The anti-Catholic Gordon Riots in London leave an estimated 300 to 700 people dead.
1793 โ€“ French Revolution: Franรงois Hanriot, leader of the Parisian National Guard, arrests 22 Girondists selected by Jean-Paul Marat, setting the stage for the Reign of Terror.
1805 โ€“ Napoleonic Wars: A Franco-Spanish fleet recaptures from the British the island of Diamond Rock, which guards the entrance to the bay leading to Fort-de-France, Martinique.
1866 โ€“ The Fenians defeat Canadian forces at Ridgeway and Fort Erie, but the raids end soon after.
1896 โ€“ Guglielmo Marconi applies for a patent for his wireless telegraph.
1941 โ€“ World War II: German paratroopers murder Greek civilians in the villages of Kondomari and Alikianos.

The_fifth_company_of_The_Queen's_Own_Rifles_-_during_the_Battle_of_Ridgeway_it_was_the_only_Company_to_use_modern_Spencer_Repeating_Rifles_(cropped)[1]
Today is the 159th anniversary of the twin battles of Ridgeway and Fort Erie, fought in the vicinity of the town of Fort Erie across the Niagara River from Buffalo, New York, between Canadian troops and an irregular army of Irish-American invaders, the Fenians. The Battle of Ridgeway was the largest engagement of the Fenian Raids, the first modern industrial-era battle to be fought by Canadians and the first to be fought only by Canadian troops and led exclusively by Canadian officers.

The Battle of Fort Erie was a surrounding and forcing of the Fenian invaders' surrender following a skirmish near Fort Erie and the farther-away Battle of Ridgeway. The Fenian force, withdrawing from Ridgeway, met a small force of Canadian militia at Fort Erie, then known as the village of Waterloo.

Prior to the battle of Ridgeway, the Fenian insurgents, led by Brigadier General John O'Neill, a former Union cavalry commander who had specialized in anti-guerrilla warfare in Ohio, secured boats and transferred some 800 men across the Niagara River, landing above Fort Erie, before dawn on June 1, 1866. An additional 200โ€“400 Fenians and supplies crossed later during the morning and early afternoon until the US Navy gunboat, the USS Michigan, began intercepting Fenian barges at 2:20 p.m. โ€” 13 hours after the first Fenian advance party landed in Canada.

An advance party of 250 men of Lieutenant Colonel George Owen Starr's 17th Kentucky Fenian Regiment landed in Canada at about 1:30 AM and raised a large Fenian green flag with a gold Irish harp some two hours in advance of O'Neill's main force. Starr's advance party rushed to seize the town, cut telegraph wires and take control of the railway yards south of Fort Erie by dawn as the rest of O'Neill's force was disembarking. U.S. authorities also allowed unarmed men to board the ferry from Buffalo and small boats freely crossed the Niagara River until the afternoon. It is estimated that at least 1,000 and possibly as many as 1,350 Fenians in total crossed during the first thirteen hours of June 1, but it is impossible to determine a precise number.

O'Neill spent the first day trying to rally the local citizenry to the Fenian cause and to commandeer supplies for his mission, but his force was plagued by desertions almost from the outset. By nightfall, O'Neill estimated that he had perhaps 500 men remaining in his camp. Later during the night, O'Neill was reinforced by an additional column of 200 Fenians who had been deployed earlier on a bridgehead at Black Creek guarding against an approach from Chippawa in the north, bringing his total strength at Ridgeway to at least 650 men.

lossy-page1-1536px-The_battle_of_Ridgeway,_C.W._June_2nd_1866_LCCN2004669162.tif[1]
Meanwhile, the British were mobilizing both local Canadian militia and British garrison troops to defend against the impending invasion of Canada. The Fenians night-marched north across Black Creek (Ontario) through a cedar swamp, then turned inland on Ridge Road on the morning of June 2; taking up a defensive position on Limestone Ridge near the present Canadian town of Ridgeway. There, they clashed with 850 advancing Canadian militia commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Booker of the 13th Battalion.

In the first hour of the battle, the Canadians appeared to prevail, driving Fenian skirmishers back across Bertie Road. Then something went wrong: to this day, it is not clear exactly what. Some sources say that the Canadian militiamen mistook Fenian scouts on horseback for cavalry. Orders to form a square to defend against a cavalry charge, although quickly countermanded, led to chaos in the Canadian ranks and Booker ordered a withdrawal after ninety minutes of battle. Other sources indicate that troops mistook a company of redcoated 13th Battalion infantry for British troops relieving them and began to withdraw; which then triggered a panic among other troops who mistook the withdrawal for a retreat. O'Neill, observing the chaos breaking out in the Canadian ranks, quickly ordered a bayonet charge that completely routed the inexperienced Canadians.

The Fenians took and briefly held the town of Ridgeway. Then, expecting to be overwhelmed by British reinforcements, they quickly turned back to Fort Erie where they fought a second battle, the Battle of Fort Erie, against a small but determined detachment of Canadians holding the town.

The Canadian loss was 9 killed, 37 wounded (some severely enough to require amputation), and 22 died of wounds or disease later. One British soldier, Corporal Carrington, 47th (Lancashire) Regiment of Foot, died on a forced march from Chippawa to Stevensville. O'Neill claimed he had one or two men killed, but Canadians claimed more.

The relatively low casualty figures make this an interesting battle for proponents of theories about soldiers' reluctance to shoot to kill, but could also be accounted for by the fact that the Fenians had deployed only their skirmishers in an attempt to lure the Canadians towards their main force which did not advance until the last minutes of the battle, when they launched the bayonet attack that broke Canadian lines.

Alexander Muir, author of the unofficial Canadian national anthem, "The Maple Leaf Forever", fought with the Queen's Own Rifles of Toronto at Ridgeway, writing the song in 1867, the year after Ridgeway.

With the small number of troops involved, the varied units and differing equipment, this may well be a suitable engagement to use Too Fat Lardies' Sharp Practice. Another popular ruleset for the colonial era, The Men Who Would Be Kings would also be reasonably well suited.

In the board wargame space The Last Invasion: The Fenian Raids on Canada - 1866 & 1870, an upcoming title by Mark Woloshen and published by Legion Wargames, covers the Battle of Ridgeway.

While I have focussed on the Battle of Ridgeway, the Battle of Fort Erie, with a small force of Canadians unprepared to meet the oncoming tide of Fenians retreating from Ridgeway, offers an interesting asymmetrical attacker/defender scenario run against the clock.

Taking_of_the_rock_Le_Diamant,_near_Martinique,_2_June_1805_(by_Auguste_Etienne_Franรงois_Mayer)
Bonus post: Other candidates I did start on the Battle of Diamond Rock before I saw it was the Ridgeway anniversary. An interesting engagement with a very one-sided battle, the defenders only surrendering due to a lack of ammo and fresh water which nonetheless offers fodder for Napoleonic Sharp Practice games.

I included the Gordon Riots in the On This Day section because of Jim Wallman's (mostly) 18th century riot rules, Little Lambent Meteors.

- fully painted armies
- interesting scenario, one that makes people want to read up or ask more about the period/circumstances
- and most importantly, not showing you're tired of little interest. That's how you get less interest. Enthusiasm is contagious, and so is a lack thereof.

well, in a way I guess, though Orles were generally higher status and encrusted with gems and made out of velvet and stuff. so I wouldnt exactly call them "plain". while torses I believe are just two pieces of fabricted with complementary colors twisted together, any footman might have them (though higher ups would too since they are sexy regardless of ease.)

Ive always liked pike + small shield, and really any polearm more heavy duty then a regular spear + shield in general.
alexander's pikemen are an obvious example, but there were also those knights that dismounted and used their lances as pikes against the swiss. unfortunately I dont believe it was used all that much by knights, but its a cool aesthetic nonetheless.

I'm doing Bolt Action, 28mm scale naturally. I know it's barely a historical game, but people actually play it around here. Current WIP

I've currently got an Officer, Forward Observer, fifteen infantrymen with various weapons, sniper team, Boys team, two light mortar teams, a bren carrier, and a Humber. Planning to add a Matilda and another box of infantry next, then I'll decide where else to go, since the local group plays ~1250 points apparently.

When I did my demo game last week I won based on a lucky 6 from a heavy mortar wiping a squad. Didn't really like that, so I'll probably avoid the bigger blasts.

Nice start for an army you got there. Neaten up those base rims a bit and maybe give those webbings a different color (no clue about how they looked in rl), because right now the soldiers just look like monocoloured blobs with uniform and flesh and sand on the bases being so close to each other, colourwise.

Tbh if people combined it with couple of washes and a painted base it would be 50% of the way there. In rank and flank games for me everyone after the first five is essentially block painted in 1 or 2 more colours than the 1 or 2 mentioned there, gets a couple of washes and a neatly flocked base. They are playing pieces, and I build clean and varnish them to be used primarily. Front rank I add a couple more details and highlights. I care way more about the overall finish, nice neat bright coats and some shading.

I think I need something fresh to work on. I've got a bunch of fairly generic 10mm Arab rebels that fit the 19th through early 20th century from my Rif War project, and a arid hilly desert table and I'm thinking of using them for something new.

Maybe the Russian conquest of central Asia and get some frontier Russians?
Maybe Arab Revolt and get some Turks?
Anyone have any suggestions?

I ordered like $200 worth of figures from Empress and Spectre for the Russo-Ukrainian War, and some T-80 and BMP. I can't wait for them to arrive, I wish they'd arrive right now.

It's my first time dipping into ultra modern wargaming and I'm pretty exciting, I've spend so much time and thought on sword and spear rank and flank shit that the idea of doing something completely different is getting me fired up. I read a few rulebooks and settled on Asymmetric Warfare. Spectre Operations 2e looked really good and AW is just an updated version. Force on Force looked pretty epic as well, but the rules took a lot longer to digest so I decided against it. Spectre Operations 3e seemed like total dogshit, being made by completely different people

I find them another easy place to grab so you dont finger the actual mini diorama itself. If it gets chipped a bit, just add more black paint.
Though this issue might be solved with a finish which I havent experimented with yet. I am unsure what one to use since I want the cloth to be matte and the armor to be shinny.

Also, thats a rad diorama

Because all the soviet stuff is made to be weaker so they can push their retarded soviet hordes meme that clogs up tables like you see in every pic of the game posted here. Same reason why the T-80 wasn't in the game since the start despite it being their mainline tank in 1985 and was only added after NATO all got shit made in the 1990s that heavily outclassed it.

You can also kind of see this in flames of war where soviet infantry are saved on 4+ but all other infantry are saved on 3+. Things like their DHSK and katyusha trucks are saved on 5+ but other unarmored vehicles like the german and american AA halftracks with no armor or jeeps are saved on 4+.

NTA but people don't seem to realize that the soviets had a very perverted version of the Japanese death before surrender mindset. While the Japanese was cultural the soviets was Stalin. Order 270. The tldr being fight to the death, there are no Soviet POWs only Traitors. Even those missing in action were presumed to be deserters and traitors before they were assumed KIA. This of course was all backed up by the double edged punishment of summary execution and reprisals against the solders family. No pension, no state aid, and the possibility of arrest. The soviets were encouraged to die at the end of a bayonet. Their lives were exceptionally cheap. And die they did. In droves and heaps and piles.

Some might say not enough of them died.

I never said that. Come and See and Stalingrad are probably the most accurate depictions of the Soviet army in film.

But when your ordered to fight to the death while encircled and try to break out to the last man, instead of surrendering, the Germans are going to kill a lot of you.

What are you trying to achieve? Realism, "competitive" (fast, balanced) play, individual stories, the challenges of command and combined arms? Personally I'd say O-Group, but most games - even the ones people here hate (FoW, BA) - have something to recommend them, depending on what you're after.

I think, for the time being until I decide on a new project properly, I'm going to take the second unpainted platoon I have of Cazadores and paint them up in an earlier uniform. The Rayadillo style uniform was used from 1909 though 1920, with the green uniforms I've already painted being adopted in 1914 for summer uniforms only, and then for both summer and winter uniforms completely in 1920 onward. That will give me a larger flexibility in era I can have these Spaniards fighting. And if need be I could still combine them together into a full company if I ever needed that for action between 1914 through the early 1920s. I rather paint now and decide on something I'd really like to get into with some proper planning put into it later. I think I will finally pick up some pith helmeted Brits with maxim guns (I've been using zulu war era British for these Spaniards as noone makes the actual Spaniards and at 10mm who can tell) because the Spanish fielded a very limited numbers of them early on before switching over to the Hotchkiss as a result of supply restrictions caused by the Great War.

Just something fun that captures the essence of the war without being overly autistic and dense. I hate competitive "balanced" shit, warfare is never balanced. I don't want so much realism it saps all the fun out of it, but also I don't want to see someone destroy a panther with a sten gun.

What game system would you guys recommend for simulating Dark Ages combat? Hail Caesar feels like an obvious choice for casual/accessibility reasons, but I've heard that Triumph! is a good alternative to it. approx 1/3rd of all soviet dead were PoWs that died in german camps because the germans gave little fucks about soviet pows. and when you add on the minor axis powers such as romania, hungary, bulgaria, finland it starts to even out and given that the soviets were in disarray on the defensive and then took the offensive the casualties start to make more sense.

>>95792450
Thats a gay and retarded thing to say. WW3 scenarios and made up african civil wars or invasions of fictious middle eastern countries are /hwg/ so long as its accurate real life equipment with no fantasy elements. Modern wargames kind of rely on having to make use with fictional conflicts. So long as the forces are accurate for the time period its really not all that crazy or wierd.

>but that never happened
neither did 99% of the battles you guys play out and the real battles people do recreate are never accurate to the real thing most fucking napoleonic wargamers just throw together french vs british in a random field with 0 actual relevance to any actual battle that occured. Besides this retarded tribalism is part of the reason this general goes to shit.

I don't mind spoonfeeding you but for this one question you'll have to be a bit more specific.

Anyway here's something:
-En Garde for duels.
-Test of Honour for skirmishes.
-Kensei + Sekigahara (boardgame) for rank n flank campaigns.

Keep in mind this is a very different list than what I usually post regarding Sengoku Jidai wargaming because I'm assuming you want a nippon dressing on top of a fast and light wargame.

Those 6mm are to sell, I mainly do 10mm for my own stuff but it's become rather pricey lately, genuinely thought about switching over to 6mm, so much easier to paint, cheaper, and far less time
I find with 10mm stuff there's still too much detail but even when painted nicely you're not really going to see it from 3ft away

I think "tank doctrine as written" is that even within the platoon structure, tanks could even be almost a mile apart. As soon as you get into any dense terrain, this doctrine goes out the window.

One thing I think about is particularly in WW2 you have so much documentation suggesting tank crews are nipping in and out of the tank constantly to fix something, check what's going on properly, chuck someone a cheese sandwich and have a chat and mostly - everybody jumping out wuick sticks because we think we may be on fire. Even though Shermans were a bit skft from some angles, the crews got consumately good at leaping out if they thought they had been hit. Tank crew survival rate was really high. So if I was in WW2 and had to fight, I would like to have been a tanker.

Newfag here, I've been looking to get into miniature wargaming for quite some time as I've played a ton of historical hex&counter games, but wanted to try out something both on a smaller scale, and more visually appealing. My only question is - it seems that almost everyone who plays miniature wargames has some 3D terrain for play, and all the terrain features are glued and you can't change anything - do you just seriously play out hundreds of scenarios over years on the same little strip of terrain and never get bored? Do you have multiple of them? How does it work?

Shit man, Iโ€™ve been getting into a 6mm modern warfare TTG (Micro armor, not AFFoT for what itโ€™s worth) and Iโ€™m just going to say 90s-00s US army โ€œStandardโ€ divisions are EXPENSIVE! Itโ€™s all Bradleys, and Abrams, even the air support is super-cobras and Apaches!

Donโ€™t get me wrong, theyโ€™re all great units, but when up against a conscript horde, those point-costs get real restrictive. So I was looking for more economical alternatives, like switching out the Bradleys for LAV-25s and HMMWVs I realize that the LAV-25s are primarily a marine corps only vehicle, but I donโ€™t care anymore, itโ€™s half the point cost of the Bradley, it was/is in active use, and mostly itโ€™s just losing the TOWs and treads but from what I recall, and am reading, by this time it seems like the US didnโ€™t really have a light tank. So if I want any kind of tank support, itโ€™s either: field the comically over-gunned Abrams (any Abrams variant to be honest), (which is fun to watch it explode T-34s just by glaring at them, but Itโ€™s a lot of army points to field against such a small threat), the aging M60โ€™s, but those are still expensive, or to press-gang some Bradleys to stand-in for light tank duty (which they canโ€ฆ kinda do, sorta), or make do without. I mean, I know the M551 Sheridan was technically still in service, but even by the 80โ€™s it was largely relegated to national guard and reserve units, and even then they werenโ€™t so much being โ€œusedโ€ as being kept in the back of the garage and aggressively ignored.

Am I forgetting anything? Or is there something else Iโ€™m forgetting?

Eh, I think you can blame Hollywood for creating that mindset. Tank props are expensive so a studio is naturally going to be very conservative about how many at a time and how often said tank is going to appear in their war movie. Thus creating the false-impression that tanks arenโ€™t that numerous and donโ€™t cluster together into large groups.

I play the fuck out of that, and also try to play Wings Over Flanders fields. Having flown both the eindecker and moraine in these two sims I honestly agree. They're very frustrating awful planes to fly, I just find that period in early air war very fascinating. Personally, I prefer to fly the Pfalz DIIIa and the Siemens-Schuckert D.IV. That fuckin D.IV. It took a while to get a hang of but I really love that little bastard. I wish WOFF worked better, but I can't fly for shit in it which is a shame because it has so many rare warbirds you never see in any other sims.

As for rules, I haven't decided yet. I've got FFoL StarFighters which I might just trim down and tweak for some simple dogfights. I'm open to suggestions however. Right now I'm just trying out airplane wargaming for the first time, I hope to get a big pile of autism later. So many airplanes. So many possibilities.

If you like early war action, I will honestly recommend you look up Wings Over Flanders Fields, but I will do so with a massive asterisk.

84 flyable aircraft, over 500 joinable squadrons, all thoroughly researched with something like 7000 skins, a start date in 1915 with early war flyable airplanes such as the Aviatik C.I, Morane "Parasol" and Bristol scout with offset lewis, plus all the fokker E type, the Moraine N and others. The game is beautiful though not up to IL2 Flying circus levels in graphics, but most importantly the campaign plays like someone took PWCC and made a proper game out of it. Also, imo the AI is better than the AI in flying circus.

The problems with it is that flying is fucking hard. Really hard. Even with the easy flight model set, as the 2 devs have really leaned into crunchy realism. Furthermore, you're going to have to bind everything by hand if you have your own HOTAS and stick setup and the game can be kinda cranky doing so. I use some programs, vJoy, hithide, and joystick gremlin to run my joystick and trottle quadrant for it, and it works well, but there's just a lot of set up involved to get it running. Thankfully the game does recognize track IR.

Despite bemoaning it in my previous post, really the problem I have with it is myself as a pilot. It is a gem, just a really fucking hard gem and kind of a rough one. I think I've only put about 40 hours into it since I got it, and I've got 3 kills. It's hard to fly, it's hard to kill, it's easy to die, but I recommend at least looking it up.

99% of people build home made terrain out of cardboard, popsicle sticks, paper, foam and paint it.

For example I built wooden fences out of popsicle sticks and wheat fields out of painted strips of paper glued to a cardboard square. I made houses out of foam, cardboard and popsicle sticks. I supplement this with plastic trees glued to card board bases to represent woods and jungles and I bought some stone walls and river terrain pieces. gives you a good chunk of variety.

Post models bros. Here is an early Renaissance/Italian wars foot knight from Steel Fist Miniatures.

I highly recommend them if you are interested in the period. Great castings, quick shipping.

The cool part about their knights is that their armor is sculpted to resemble real historical pieces that can be seen in museums today. Their German Peasant War range is great if you want to do some revolt/uprising wargaming set in the late 15- early 16th centuries.

Here is one of the footknights. This guy is wearing a common set up from the period, likely would be a less wealthy or younger knight/mercenary. Very utilitarian set up, designed to be effective in battle and comparatively quick to manufacture compared to the great statement pieces of the period.

am watching a game of saga to see how it is played, and it seems really... gamey.

like the mechanics are really removed from an abstraction of warfare to this game of distributing points to abilities. like really, what is "one unit on your side gets to remove a fatigue when your enemy charges" supposed to represent?

NTA but that suggests to me maybe the guy is asking for more specific advice on what works well for the undercoat colour, not some rubbish about how to hold a rattlecan
honestly blows my mind how useless answers are here but particularly on /hwg/ where people seem to be playing a game as to how much they can misinterpret a question without obviously stonewalling

SAGA is straight up ass and I firmly believe that all the people suggesting it have never actually played it. SAGA was one of the first Darl Ages games that caught on, so I feel like it became the "go to" game people suggested without actually knowing what's it's like. Pillage is releasing any day now from Victrix and looks to be a good fun game for Dark Ages, give that a look.

FoW and Saga are both pretty fun as games, but they wear their historical trappings very lightly as set dressing. They are games set within historical wars, and can give you a fun evening's play. They are not historical wargames and will not give you either a detailed simulation, nor an encapsulation of the experience of command.

Neither is necessarily "good" or "bad", but they do a different thing to what some of the posters here want.

depends how you paint
Black works best for block painting or whatever it's called, like in >>95810119 and is far less time consuming, but you might need more than one layer of a colour. You can also do a white drybrush over it
I've painted in white and grey primer before as well and would say white is better than grey since you want the colours to really come out and be bright at this scale
pic related was painted grey with normal acrylics, but any new 10mm stuff I now paint is in white and using speedpaints, look way better imo

Im fine with saga not being completely realistic/simulationist, its just that it seems REALLY abstracted from the feeling (not necissarily reality) of warfare broadly ment. Hell, I feel that Warhammer fantasy battles or Mordheim did a better job portraying moral and fighting, and thats fantasy.

Maybe unrelated because its fantasy, but i used a black, followed by brown spraycan primer on my 10mm beastmen. They got a drybrush with lighter browns/dust colour and then i picked out the metallic bits and some cloth and bone/horns here and there and the rest of them remaind in the brown + brown/sepia washes.
But them being brown goatmen helps i guess.

Seems my local group are on the fence when it comes to basing, some want to do more traditional 60mm, others want to go with what the book suggests (80mm). 60mm seems comfy and helps with amplifying table size, but some figures (especially Victrix) don't fit so tightly and we might end up with 2 knights on each base instead of 3, which looks a bit silly

nah flames of war sucks as a game thats the problem.

the line of sight rules are iffy, army balance is bad overall for both mid and late war. germans and americans have retarded OP spam lists and soviets are damn near unplayable in any capacity even casually.

a good example is M3 lees in midwar. american ones are hit on 3+ and have stabilizers giving them 2 shots on the move while soviet M3 lees are hit on 2+ and have no stabilizer yet they cost the same points despite the soviet one having no upside.

also being 6 beers deep to have to enjoy flames of war is a shit idea too because the soviet player will lose even harder and why the fuck do I need to go play hex and counter because I dare want the slightest semblance of balance in my casual game that forgos all historical accuracy in the name of balance?

Flames of War dick rides germany so hard that a front armor 5 tank hunter with 28" AT 12 as the soviets is 12 points while a front armor 5 tank hunter for the germans with 48" AT 20 is fucking 9 points in mid war. The game is unplayable without dynamic points and only barely tolerable with them.

Yes mate I know it's Henry V. It's backwards. The flag you used as a reference has two sides, one is reversed because it's meant to go on the reverse side of a banner, like how the cost of arms on the back of Henry's tabard would be reversed. You put the reverse side on the front. You should have painted the side circled here

>can take or leave Siocast
>they are getting expensive and some of the older sculpts could use an update
>we didn't need a proprietary scale, although you get pretty much what you need in one of those boxes

But on average a Warlord starter set is like fucking Christmas to me.

The games work, I like to do a little house ruling with Blackpowder and start eith the artillery but otherwise they are good club games where everyone brings a battalion and support.

Ultimately I always feel a little uneasy spending all that time working on figures just to single base em.

The armoured car looks nice although I've often seen Caunter with blue-r shades; however I'm sorry to say but the tanks don't look great. I don't know how to preserve the rivet detail, but the flat panels really need some kind of filling or sanding. Or consider a finer resolution, likely a Resin 3dP. Absolutely no need for them to go resin printing. FDM printing can achieve flat panel detail at that scale just fine, they're just either using an older printer that can't achieve that detail or they've not bothered refining their print settings to get rid of that visible layer line.

No. 4 Squadron RFC
-3 Moraine Saulnier N scouts
-3 Nieuport 11 scouts
-2 B.E.2c two seaters
Feldflieger Abteilung 62
-3 Fokker Eindecker (can be I/II/III) scouts
-3 Halberstad D.II scouts
-Aviatik BI/II/CI two seaters

Plus a mixed bag of unidentified aircraft from an unknown maker, though I think they're Heroics&Ros from eBay, only because it clearly has 3 Etrich-Rumpler Taube two seaters. I don't really have a use for the Taube as they're long retired by June 1915. But, fuck it I love this weird little seed inspired airplane. I'm not sure what the other airplanes are in the lot. I think albatross DII/III and Roland CII, but some of the wings have scalloped edges and could be AEG C.IVs. The eBay photo sucks and none of the planes are put together.

I haven't been this excited over nonsense in a long time.

I think the ones circled in blue are Roland CII based off being 2 seaters, and the shapes of their tails. Plus there are wings that look to have an MG mounted on top of them. I think the green ones are albatross. They're clearly one seaters, have the right looking tail structure and might have the side mounted radiators that were on the DII. I can't really tell from the struts on some of the available wings. The ones in red, I just can't figure out. I'm pretty sure these are H&R like I said above given that there's the Taubes, I've tried comparing them to H&Rs catalog with limited success. Hmmm, I haven't been positive because of the rudder. I can't tell if the rudder has the dramatic round curve of a Pfalz from the photos though. Also the the circle green have a bit more pronounced horizontal stabilizer/elevator than on the Pfalz.

Also anon, that's a DV in your pic. The DII has a flat edge to its rudder.

But the elevators still don't match even a DII, I retract my previous statements on the tail structures looking correct.

Holy shit, you've been working hard on this. I feel like the medieval period is the best for this sort of thing of painting one, two, or three minis at a time. For more uniform periods sometimes it's good to batch paint, and therefore it is a more daunting task. Either way, amazing determination, anon

By the way, what games use 40x40mm basing (for 28mm minis) apart from Swordpoint? I think Hail Caesar is also workable with that, as well as Impetus, but the DBA style games are out, right?

Thanks! Its been a really nice experience so far, a lot of work though Like you said.
And yes! it being medieval and so varied has been a real boast to my volition to do it, since when a new color design comes to mind I can immediately go and try it.. Really staves off burn out.

>By the way, what games use 40x40mm basing (for 28mm minis)
DESU I use them cause I already had them to display rpg miniatures. It just so happens that 24 and 16 are divisible by 8. I didnt even know about swordpoint thanks! but yah, was thinking about hail ceaser. But also the little known Middle earth stratage game large battle system also uses trays of 8 and I liked the one video out there that has played it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wQUIuFlasU&t=46s
I might rebase So I can play oathmark or lion rampant or something else at some point as well (I like games where you take away minis, more tactile that way)

Here is my current progress on my first mounted man at arms. im especially happy with how the lance maypole design came out, cut a sliver of masking tap to make the candy cane design. not finished yet, but got most of the base colors in place.

There used to be an anon who was complaining about Aventine renewing its figure ranges and fucking up a couple of years ago. Do we have something like that? I want to know if it's still worth it to buy their Republican Roman range or not. Some of the commander figures seem a bit rough, honestly, like they're sort of blobby or less detailed, especially clothing, legs, arms... Maybe I should go with Victrix instead, the issue is that Victrix's miniatures are a bit TOO static. I don't really like the regular action poses of its figures, but in this case they're static and a bit robotic too. Thoughts?

The good news is that Aventine is now operating with new owners, so the minis are not lost, at least.

What an ugly bird, I kinda love it. That would be cool and the tail structures seem to match. I'll find out for sure when they arrive tomorrow.

I also noticed some of the pairs of wings are sesquiplane wings. I don't know any German airplanes with lower wings that more narrow than the upper wings other than the Pfalz D.IIIa.

I'm making some bold assumptions that these tiny airplanes are mostly accurate to the actual airplanes they represent. But soon I'll know.

Didnt see anyone post this but apparently warlord dropped a preorder already for the plastic autoblinda? Also apparently theyre dropping a random US transport truck in plastic too
Not really complaining but its odd to see them drop these without anything else coinciding (except the winter british releases, but that ties in even less)
Looks like i might be starting some of my italian army a bit before their major release (holding out for some plastic paracadutisti and a plastic p40 that could maybe be a dual kit with another one of the semovente's )

So I'm getting into bolt action as my first "historical game" and I'm playing Japan. One of the options you can take is IJA troops armed with bamboo spears as a sort of late war last ditch weapon. Is there any historicity to this? I know about the Volunteer Fighting Corps, but did IJA Regulars ever actually use bamboo spears? Were things really that grim?

Yes actually. The first instance that I know of is at Attu in Alaska in 1943, where Colonel Yasuyo Yamasaki's suicide banzi charge was mostly equipped with bayonets lashed to poles. Later in 1944 a similar spear armed charge happened on Saipan with almost 3000 spear armed japs, and later still on Okinawa there was another spear armed charge at Bloody Ridge, but only with a few hundred solders. Marines in the Philippines actually recovered documents detailing how to manufacture spears and how to best fight with them, stating things such as stabbing the chest was not very effective due to the presence of the ribs, but stabbing in the belly was better. As far as I know these bamboo spears were less sharpened bamboo and more bamboo with a bayonet on the end of it, but none the less it did happen and was documented, just in very small numbers.

Fuck no, they made guns with bamboo stocks for civilians on the home islands but those never saw service.

Bolt action just adds a lot of retarded untrue history memes like that. Soviets can also take infantry without any guns even though the Mosin Nagant and PPSH-41 are the most mass produced rifle and smg ever by that point in time.

Japan made over 10 million Ariskas and their peak army size was like 5 million men

People vaguely know about foreign aid like lend-lease but they have no understanding about what kind materials were actually sent. Movies have tricked them into thinking that they were getting shipments of Russian small arms as opposed to train cars, factory equipment, radios, and materials like steel. I don't know what the first instance in media is of the "1 man has a rifle and 4 men carry stripper clips behind" meme is but Enemy at the Gates is the first one I remember. I think some games did it after that, too.

I think one of the early Call of Duty games did the "one rifle to five men, follow the man in front of you!" thing, with the player as the last of five, so you watched four other guys get it before you even picked up a rifle.
