The first year /slop/ existed, every 10th post was some variation of "that's nice but what GAME is this image being used for???" It was honestly hilarious watching him try to mentally ban everyone in the thread because they were breaking his rules. He kept getting banned for reporting the thread as well (you could tell because all his posts would disappear simultaneously, and he wouldn't post for three days).

I'm really fucking tired of people trying to be special, most of the time all you get is a lame story with a veneer of uniqueness. I've played human only games that were interesting because the story was good, stop using nonhumans as a crutch for good writing.

I was watching this worldbuilding series on giants and most of his races were just beastmen. His frost giants were walrusmen. His fire giants were lizardmen. His cloud giants were bugmen. His desert elves were foxmen. He also had races of beetlemen and salamandermen. I think just calling the giants beastmen is too simplistic. They are overall very interesting ideas. But the fact he decided that the playable races all needed to be weirder too threw me off. Make it just standard fantasy races, and keep those various giants unique.

I particularly liked the fire giants, made me wonder how it'd work in the plane of fire. Sounded like they'd be purely carnivorous and nearly never need to sleep.

I think that there is something to embracing certain fantasy tropes & looks even if the races in your project are not explicitly supposed to be elves, dwarves etc.
In my autistic little worldbuilding project, I ended up originally unintientionally creating "elves" and when I realized that I had basically made elves, I just went for it and took more of the aesthetic etc in rather than fight the "gravity" of the look/vibe. Picture related.
Though, they aren't actually called elves within the setting, as the setting isn't a fantasy one in the first place. They are human, or more accurately a genetically engineered & enhanced post human splinter of humanity that emerged from the aristocratic ruling class of the setting.

My Dwarves are a cousin species of humans akin to Neanderthal or Denisovans which evolved in lower altitudes and used ravines as shelter resulting in them becoming shorter to better squeeze into tight spaces, as well as stronger with denser bones to help them build inside of said ravines. However due to this they're too heavy to swim and hence drown, especially when it rains and their homes are filled with water which they drown in. Leading to the belief that large bodies of water are evil and full of demonic spirits. They also have a Jacobsen organ capable of detecting toxic gases and their stomachs can processes roots and mushrooms which would kill a normal human. Their eyes are sensitive to bright lights so they forged goggles with coal dust tint. Because of this they quickly got into Metalworking and forgery which they became the best at nearly becoming the dominant species however due to climate change there were massive storms, mud slides in their eavines which killed off a lot of the Dwarves and Buried their homes. Setting them back thousands of years.
My Giants are another cousin species of Humans and Dwarves which evolved on mountains tops in high altitudes which lead to them getting more oxygen and growing larger, however they sacrificed their intellect for strength and while still intelligent they're not as smart as a human or dwarf. They died out after climate change raped their land atop the mountains and cliffs leading to them needing to go down to the surface world where they were quickly prosecuted by humans who viewed them as monster. They also formed a rivalry with Dwarves because the Dwarves believed they were the reason their ravines were flooded and buried leading to both Dwarves and Humans trying to kill Giants who used only stone tools due to the belief that the Stone was given to them by God and that metal is the trickery and magic of Dwarves.

My Dwarves and Giants are influenced by Tolkien but I also looked into Mythology from Norse, Native American and German peoples. As well as History, Biology and speculator Evolution.
Also "Dwarf" and "Giant" aren't a defined species, it's a descriptor, so if someone makes a Dwarf an ant person or a Giant a blue whale person their not wrong. I wouldn't do that but those are just descriptors. Now if you made Elves something like Dog humans I would agree that's not even elves at that point.
You know what my Elves are? Cute but ugly pug faced, tiny humans who lived in the freezing arctic and are Intune with nature. I mixed trad Elves and Nordic Christmas Elf folk lore. Again you can be original but still influenced by the greats.

So you have cool background lore that makes your dwarves and elves distinct while also keeping them recognizable as the races you took inspiration from. That's exactly how you should do it and I have no problem with that. I'm actually doing a similar thing with giants being related to dwarves and growing large due to no longer living underground but it's not fleshed out enough for me to wanna talk about it.
But dwarves are the same as elves. They have, for a long time before Tolkien, been described as short bearded craftsmen living in rocks, not exclusively, but enough that it's what most people today recognize them as.
Anyone calling their animal races dwarves (and it's always an insect or some burrowing mammal) is doing it for no reason other than to draw attention to the fact it's not Gimli and get patted on the back for how unique and creative they are (they're not).
