A Jolly Old Scrap edition

>What is this?
/TG/ DEVELOPED A GAME
IT IS PLAYABLE. IT HAS BEEN PLAYED.
EXPEDITION is a ~1880s era, Jules Verne-inspired retro-futurist, underground blood soaked adventurescape.
It is a Skirmish wargame. Two players with their own expeditions, on a hexgrid map, explore & fight each other for victory and profit.

3 versions of the rules exist, 2 of which have been playtested. The main one is 2e, to be found :

Fisherman
Fisherman
md5: 53eb2cba7b04afe57c63f1ac51118d4a๐Ÿ”
Did this and started working on Tesla yesterday, will post what I come up with shortly.
I'm thinking of having "can use AP from different models" as a bit of a sub-mechanic to the faction, in part to compensate for how mediocre many of the individual models are. I want to make sure to avoid the whole "rambo" effect Infinity has, so it has to be limited/need you to take steps before working. So I'm thinking both Tesla and the phone specialist could work mostly toward that, Tesla installing wireless power transmitters on mechanical models to allow the AP to be transmitted, while the phone dudes can hand over phones to soldiers to do the same within a limited range (with possibly some rule to have Tesla upgrade those to wireless phones and/or setting up telephone poles to extend the range, dunno...).
He'll probably end up unlocking the Leyden rifles or however we want to do it.
The Strauss stand in I figure we can make him a sort of "diplomat/mercenary" recruitment dude, music is the universal language, Austria sends him to woo Deepfolks (Mu Old Ones really like him too), and he has a bunch of fan/roadies following him around... ?
For the Fisherman I skipped on the Fear, its enough already that he may cause -2 Discipline to Morlocks right from the beginning of the game (especially since he'll be allowed to deploy), -3 starts the Morlock Shaken unless you are getting buffed.

What I'm coming up with at the moment. The Leyden Rifle rules posted last thread will be toned down a bit, but should still be a very good (albeit costly) weapon.
The Extraordinary Implications is probably something that will be cloned in other spots as well. Just something to integrate more support for Academics.

>Replacing Tsardom by Denmark in the upcoming Doggerland Campaign
Requires clarification.
>Denmark mini (MINI, 2~3 profiles at most) faction?
I have ideas.
>Overwatch/Riposte mechanic
I'm much more inclined toward an Overwatch mechanic than a Riposte one. Melee weapons already have a number of advantages over Ranged ones, and there are a few models that have riposte mechanics as Specials. I think guns without Ammo Feed could use it. Maybe have it be something put on the weapons? All Hyperborean weapons should have it. It could go on the Rapier, which has needed to be changed for a while (we said a while ago sword but with reach; now i'm thinking sword but with 'riposte'). I like the idea but worry it would mess with things too much.
Reminds me that i think Long Bow would benefit greatly from being Grievous with Reload 1, as otherwise i see no reason to take it over the short bow.

>Dropping the whole ancient aliens angle
My brother in Atlas, did you miss all the lore speculation about the Titans being based on real ancient lifeforms (or a singular one, depending on how you look at it), possibly actual aliens who fled Hyperborea and uplifted Atlantis for some reason? I didn't watch your show (and I don't think "yeah its literally just from an anime I like" is a good selling point desu), but its not exactly that outlandish of an angle. It also goes well into the whole Gigantic thing that they are supposedly more Titanic than the Titanics and everyone else is a crypto-Epigean barbarian. Maybe some of them know somethint? Not everything, but enough to piece together that their origin myths might've been much more literal?
Also Perseus is literally Ep*gean-descended, that's a bad dynastic fit for their leader.

I assume that's related to my comment that Tsardom's participation is a bit out there? If it came across as a suggestion to replace them with Denmark, then perhaps I had un ESL momento. No, I just said that a neat lore idea that seemed natural is that Denmark, having been cucked by Britain and Germany, and having close dynastic ties to the Romanovs, would see the Tsardom as their prefered candidate to win in Doggerland and provide them with logistical support.

I was only meaning ranged attacks for now, at least, both for the Riposte and the Overwatch. Riposte would only be the model attacked shooting back, while Overwatch would be any model within Awareness range? Something like that anyways.
In any case, it would probably be the kind of change that would need a long testing window, probably longer than the Armor and Evasion change, but it might also open up a few new routes to mechanically differentiate factions and models...

Batrep time!
> Like all truly civilized society *ahem*, the Amazons are committed to providing their younglings free access to higher education.
> However, this also means that they need some form of filter to wash out the ones that won't benefit from higher learning. Taking the class for a field trip, especially in the areas that borders Atlan territory, has proven to be a great way to adjust its size.
> Today, the Amazon Queen, who would probably go insane at the thought of what Epigeans are putting their educators through, decides that 8 students is way too many.
> Atlan hunting parties are always on the lookout for these field trips. In this case, a Warmaster, his pet Gargoyle, 3 bat-mounted Retiraoi and a stupidly large horde of Titanium Miners lay in wait in the Petrified Tree forest that circles around the edge of a desert waste.

> Wary of allowing too much time for the Retiraoi to start doing sneaking, pervy shit, the Queen sends her Sorority forward as quick as possible. They gracefully run into the edge of the Petrified Forest, only to be met by a wall of chained miners. Slavery is a political quagmire to the Amazons, most of the girls fail those questions in their Political Philosophy tests, and so they definitely did not integrate the post-modern hermeneutic of the oppressed into their outlook. The girls starts chucking spears, throwing knives and arrows at the slaves, managing to put one group down and starting to do some damage on the second. The miners themselves miss all their attacks, as expected.

> This scores me another promotion, who starts unloading into the Retiraoi's back, barely managing to kill him with all of her shot.
> The Queen disengages from the Retiaroi, moving 1 away, then brings her Woolly Rhino back into a charge. The beast finally hits, Deadly triggering automatically, and failing the armour roll.
> With nothing else to commit, the Warmaster sounds the retreat, hoping that a single Amazon Slave Warriorress will fetch enough in the Baron's Markets to make up for the losses of his pet and warriors (miners are not a concern).
End game result (I believe)

I mean, if people do decide to replace the Tsardom, wouldn't Netherlands make more sense? They are right there and they were an actual empire, if a minor one. Or Sweden-Norway, idk. Both are a stretch, but Denmark is absolutely not in a shape to contest all those great powers. My main concern is that this will turn into an over-enthusiastic bloatfest of half-baked "cool ideas" that will never go anywhere.

Like the KoB, they are also running around with literal actual museum pieces (or can be, and they could be reproductions, or whatever: the mechanic came first). Quite fitting seeing as I imagine those guys hate each other (and have nearly the same stats). I don't think the revanchism is serious outside of what they lost in the 60s, and even then, they aren't trying to do it tomorrow (more like 35 years). Their goal now is to stir up sentiment, push for industrialization, strengthen ties to Sweden-Norway, and get by. If anyone has a better name i'm for it. It's sillier than i had in mind at first, and it there is a part of my mind saying that the ChemGren could do double duty as the NSR follower aswell as the Warfe one.
>>95826685
"Replace" is a strong word. I was thinking more, you'd get the option of using the models if playing Tzardom. So, "Involved" or "cooperating". Ultimately, the degree of Danish involvement will depend on if how much people want to play them. Regardless of Doggerland, given the importance of the Iceland annexation i think they ought to have some representation in the game.
>wouldn't Netherlands make more sense?
Not narratively, no. Besides, they already have representation in the game.

Got idea from Kalthoff. Rather than a clockwork gun, a working clock gun. Nice to have another Hyperborean weapon, if nothing else. Real strength comes from using it in conjunction with another gun or melee, or itself. Guess it hovers kind of near you and fires by reading your mind, but only once a minute.

Yeah, i can see that. Could get Training or Headshot! for it, then? I guess Quick Shot would be too much at that price point, but it would be my preference. It might not be, -3 Long and only an X is pretty rough. I bet at at 5 Acc it'd be fine, but then your being pushed too much into taking it. I guess the solution is to have the Kalthoff be a Special Weapon so it can be priced appropriately (it would also be easier to check stats, so either way).

Then give the Danes Quick Shot for it. It would be undercoated at 1 if not for it being a Special Weapon, which i think makes it fine.

No other mercenary medic, really. The Red Cross came about about now, so it makes sense to have something to do with in in the game. Can be taken by all Colonial factions plus Atlantis and Warfes (Neanderthals tried to be part of it but they had a few too many Oopses).

I don't think that would change much, you'd have at least 3 if not 4 turns of just moving and shooting and dropping smoke all at the same time. The shot is shit, for sure, but its a lot of AP compression. With Reload 1 and Quickshot I think its works better than Ammo 5.

For Morale mechanics, if its an effective 5 (not boost or debuffs, nothing to replace Shaken with), its definitely solid. But there's also straight up Discipline tests to account for.

It doesn't have to be that clear cut, if you have a reason to say such and such should have not have it, its fine, however given the stats on the Revanchist, I feel like 7 is a bit cheap for what he'll bring (especially once compounded with the Leader). So adding it on would go some ways into justifying the lost cost.

Both the world of Agartha and the game (2nd edition, basically we just refer as different games different anons have made as "editions") are still in development.
The other games were more limited in scope, 2e is massive (more factions than 40k, most big factions have somewhere between 20 and 30 models, plus a pool of (getting close to) a 100 merc to choose from.
Austria, Satsuma and Hyperborea are left to do (all are started, we are focusing mostly on Austria now), then I want to add on Gorgs as a mini-faction among the "support cast" factions (Olms, Amazons, Gorgs, Apemen, Morlocks, Deepfolks), and we'd be looking at more or less a complete roster.
There's also the NPCs (weird fauna and flora, random criminals, saurs) books which are left to fill out. I need to get back to those.
If you don't want to commit to writing things, posting good art from which we can cut stuff or use as game pieces will also be greatly appreciated.
If you are ever interested in trying out the game, let me know, we can arrange something as well.

The stat line for RCFM is the same one as Camp Cook. NSR is the KoB with no armor and +1 Accuracy. The Commander is a modified Warfe, meant to be a middle ground between him and the GS Commander statwise. I agree it's high, but it's common. Serb has 5, ChemGren has 5, Kentuckian has effectively 4 and a half, and those were the models i was balancing against. The average model has pretty decent discipline. Maybe that isn't the best, but it's how it is.

Mother seems like a must, otherwise no preference. Just let me have a turn or two.

If there are no option to unlock him as an Elite, it is fairly mediocre as a Rally option. I think at 10, given he can't score you Silver unless of some very rare circumstance, the added LP ability would be fine, however if its a -2 Dread I'd see it as a 1 LP 2 AP action.

This model gains terror (range 8) for the remainder of the turn.

-Apes Together Strong:
Any number of models adjacent to the Giant Mechanical Monkey makes a Strength or Labour Test (all tests must be the same). For each 2AP spent and successful test taken, this model and models who took the test immediately move 1, up to 3.

>COMMENTARY:
I thought the idea of a giant mecha monkey was somewhat incongruous with the setting, well maybe not that far-fetched but I still prefer this. Itโ€™s like a big parade float used to scare off superstitious Morlocks. Surprisingly, it works just as well on Redcoats. The Apeshead rule is a slightly laborious pun on hogshead barrels. High cost is because itโ€™s a rolling fortress even if the armour is lower than it is for some other factions. I like reusing rules.

Dr Moreau's bovine experiment? (I mean Dr Moreau being in the setting alone should satisdy most of the degens out there, he provided us with the OG catgirl)
Some Muans and Lemurians have non-human features, mostly extra arms and blue skin but horns shouldn't be too hard for a good Cultivator to achieve.
Otherwise its a bit too much after the fact. I did think at some point to suggest having an old devil-style of character roaming around the Deep as a joke character that mirrors the Tribunal. Sorta like the devil from Philemon, old cap and goatee with the fork. I feel like its too late to insert it now, but that's about the only path to actual demon ladies (as followers) there is.
>>95843403
This feels very underpowered. Its 40 silver for Cover and 3 light armour (Monkeys are fairly short on Leadership, you won't trigger the Terror more than once) for 6 models that needs to remain stationary in a faction that needs to go really really fast. I don't think it should be a warmachine that dances around the battlefield, but turning it into a crappier Prayer Platform seems like a bad option to me...
I'd want to bake Terror in, give it Gigantic and maybe 1 or 2 Movement (maybe with Heavy Traction?), then at least give it a Melee and possibly a Throw attack like the Titanium Golem?
Maybe we could export a shittier version of the German mech rules (models inside must give AP to the Mech to power it) to replace the pushing rules?

Thank you! We could always also have a platform stand as well, or something else like the Deepfolk's tribal structures, for a more static force, getting them to set up outside of deployment zone as well. Its very much after the fact but I think the Tribal Structures works fairly well at showcasing the "support cast" factions for what they are, and that we could add a few to some books. For Morlocks Water spawning is probably good enough, but you could have Apeman & Amazon themed Temples, Olm Mudcastles, Gorg Tool Sheds, etc.

>I would aslo like your feedback on that rocket monstrocity
I very much like the partial reload mechanic in tandem with the Barrage. I would like to give it Heavy Traction in order to limit its fire angle a bit throughout a turn, but I think that on top of Setup and the relatively low damage output of its main attack, if we put it at d3, it might be even a bit overpriced at 30. Fire 1 is very low damage, but it is incredibly useful to have a steady source of Fire rolls if you are facing Atlan. I could see it ending up at ~25.

I was talking to a friend about this game earlier today, and he suggested that once we finish up with filling 2e out, we should go back, grab all the broken rules and units, and put them back into the game as a different "for fun" edition, kinda like what 1e is supposed to be. i.e modify what we currently have by throwing balance out the window. Thoughts?

We could also look back at all the insane ideas that got set aside back then, like the vertical map that starts completely filled with Walls.
But also, you wouldn't really need to wait for 2e to be "filled out" to start working on that (or anyone, really, I wouldn't put much work toward it myself now but that's because I'm slow enough as it is), I know 2e takes a lot of space and often seems to overlap with the setting itself, but I really never wanted it to be that way. Otherwise if you wait for me to "finish up" 2e to do that (and I'd have fun doing it then, absolutely), it'll be a long while.

>That man in the bottom right of the picture has the expression of someone discovering something important about their preferences.
Had the same thought. Last few threads have given me a lot of material to update the french tokens, at least.
Btw, Lix was far from the only woman in ranks, or even the only woman officer in the Franco-Prussian war. Marie Favier (picrel), ร‰milie Schwalm, Mesdames Benit & de Belleray all fought and at least Favier and Schwalm were made officers. A lot of it got covered up after because it was still in bad taste (women fighting in the Rรฉvolution was a political statement, in the Franco-Prussian war it was a necessity).
Wasn't just snipers and nurses either, one was a cavalry captain (name redacted, only known by her nickname, Pรฉpita), and at least one women got exempt from a vagrancy charge after the war when she produced papers signed by a general saying she was returning home after having fought on the frontlines as a regular soldier.
Which is all to justify me saying that the frogs letting women in ranks isn't that weird (but still, weird enough by the time for others to notice), which probably didn't even need to be said.
Thank you for reading my blog.

Parisian women in particular are probably more prone to military work than their surface counterparts; a necessity of the Deep, after all. Sort of like how women on the American frontier at least knew how to shoot a gun, even if they didnโ€™t practice it often. Itโ€™s a dangerous and lawless place underground, and itโ€™s not a place that permits softness. Everyone must work, everyone must fight, at least until the wilds are tamed and the dark is banished.

I noticed while checking up images on the Gebirgsjager the doggo in the picture (there's very few other than the one Kaiser had used). Since Austria deserves to have heavy interaction with mountains, climbing, etc, feels like that unit should be impactful. Therefore, I suggest reusing a similar rule to the USA's Dog Sled, built around the model itself.
The Dog Sled itself I think we should move to the Merc book, available to all Colonials, with the recruitable Dogs as special units restricted to the relevant factions.
My logic for this is that it didn't matter if you were from a country that had easy access to dog sleds or not, if you knew you were going to in an arctic environment, you go out of your way to acquire them (unless you are an idiot).
I'm thinking the same thing for a Steam Barge boat transport as well, just so that not everyone that isn't Brit, Germs, Morlocks and Rakkad get utterly fucked by playing on an eventual water map.

>The entrance requires sacrifices to remain open and functional. A sophisticated elevator system, powered by the flow of magma has been constructed with the help of the unholy Volcanist arts. The entity in the volcano seems to shield travelers and infrastructure from extreme temperatures, making such proximity to magma non-lethal. The Stromboli route goes straight to the island of Third Sicily.
Wiki
>Italian access to the inner earth is sourced from the Stromboli volcano, off of the western coast of the peninsula. From the mainland, a large bridge extends, over which a rail line, and a paved roadway both proceed towards the summit. Opened in the course of the Abomination Wars, the volcano proceeds downwards through to Pangea. While it would seem insane to descend through an active volcano, the sorceries of the Janaerae cults prevent harm from coming towards travelers to the worlds beneath. While not of a similar nature to the well-engineered conveyor of Gustave Eiffel in Paris, the freight elevator in Stromboli does permit a consistent flow of persons and goods to populate the largest of the Epigean colonies in Pangea, Sicilia Terza.
That's all we got, I think.

On the other hand I can't very well say THAT's too much when my own mรจre-patrie gets a pseudo space-elevator...
But the Eiffel Tower makes (some) sense, this feels a bit... gratuitious? Fastest ferry crossing is from Vibo Valencia, 60km away, and takes a bit under 2 hours.
And, its not like defending it is much of a concern. I don't think anyone would want to test the scenario of trying to seize such a small island on which a Volcano Spirit is known to reside.

Something I've been working on in between other profiles is trying to get the Flora "NPC" book in shape. Lots of the NPCs in it didn't really work that well as NPCs, upon feedback from Atlan anon, I'm going to try setting those that make sense as special Terrain hex types (they just replace the one they scatter on), and having only the "real" npc ones like the Shroom Farmer, Wapaq & Ayahusca have a proper NPC profile.
There's quite a few spots on this list left so if you have ideas, either for terrain or for npc, let me know.

I mean, the two are very different. The Eiffel Elevator was the only way France had to get to Paris up to that point, so there was no alternative, and the way down is relatively straight forward. A bridge between the italian peninsula and Stromboli not only is insane in terms of tech and efforts needed, but I'm pretty sure boat travels between the mainland and the island are easy, fast and relatively simple.

So I updated some profiles in the Tsardom doc, as I've mentioned after the game, as well as some other stuff:
1. Tachanka - Ammo Feed 6, Movement, Fire 2, Range 14
2. Priest - redone ability, Awareness to 7
3. Baranowsky Gun - Range 16
4. Przhevalsky - Tibet ability now gives Tundra Hills, instead of Moss Hills. Snow could be way too strong.
5. Expeditionary Entourage - Snow, Tundra Hills, Broken Hills affinity instead of Wasteland and regular Hills. Abyss Gazer was extremely situational, so I made a new ability that should work for his support role.
6. Dragoon - Disc to 4, Ability is now *half* his movement (so 3) *after* the attack. With 5 (6) Evasion I don't think it'll be that bad, maybe reconsider a full movement.
7. I've mentioned it before, but all cavalry should be 6 max on Strength and Evasion before you add the horse bonus.
8. Plastuns should be similar enough to base Cossacks minus the horse. I think there must've been some kind of mix up because they have Labour 6 for some reason? At any rate, check the profile, Price should be 14-15 min at this rate.
9. New Parley-based stealth ability for the Okhrana Agent, reworked the stats around it.

>Weapon: Range 16/Long -2/Scatter D3/D6/Pen 3/Lethality G/ Reload 2

Now that I think of it, would it make sense for the agarthan colonies of the epigean powers to be a massive dumping ground of epigean weapons (from the Napoleonic Wars to modern equipment)? After all, an early 19th century cannon might not be useful up above anymore, but it's still useful defending the walls of epigean towns and cities from savages and wild animals. Are we taking this into consideration for the weapons of the mercenaries or the epigean forces (or even agarthan mercs who got a hold of old napoleonic mosquets)?

I apparently fucked up on the last snip, my apologies, but it didn't go much further than this. C-93 engaged with Przewalski shot and landed perfectly on the duo of line infantry and sharpshooter finally emerging on the western side, the second shot and deviate unto the survivor. Przewalski attacked (while being danger close, next to a big stack of explosives, man's got balls), the Mountain gun missed his shot. In retrospect, the Mountain Gun either needs a buff or a price decrease (I would go so far as pricing it at 20). As it is, it has the damage output of a rifle, not an artillery piece.
With that taken in account, and probably dropping the Medic, I could have brought 2x more infantry duos, which probably would have been about fair.
The new Priest abilitty only works if you bring him forward, or if you are playing a very defensive list. It might be better to bring him back to his previous incarnation, but also give him something else that he can do in order to have it be at an opportunity cost.
Probably more stuff I'm be thinking about.
I'm still not sure if either the Tsardom Leaders are too strong/underpriced, or if I've just got a bad handle on the Leader power curve any ways. Might very well be the later. Comparing Moltke to Przewalski for example, I get the redeploy ability can seem pretty swingy, but he otherwise really doesn't do much.

Have you considered that it's the German Leaders that might be too weak? Especially compared to their very solid models otherwise. Yeah, sure, I do have a bit of a powercreep problem, but this isn't actually a Tsardom or even a *me* problem, compare Moltke to someone like Cunningham or Grant.

Well, I can include it in the profile, as I said a lot of other artillery have it or something similar, but not all, and it would indeed go a long way to justify its cost. But no, Reload can only be done on your own weapons unless specified otherwise, and its not a Labour action by default either. I took Keep The Pace to mean that when you activate the Mountain gun itself you get a free Labour test which counts as a Reload if succeeded, but that is not nearly as good as having outside reload, and it requires some luck on its own to even be relevant (if you didn't have to Move and was already Loaded, your other 2 AP only have Reload to go towards, meaning there's no point in it).
If it gets outside Reload then it can shoot 3x a turn as it is now (Activate, shoot, end activation, Activate Worker a, reload twice, end activation, reactivate Mountain Gun, shoot once, end Activation, Activate Worker b, reload twice, reactivate Mountain Gun, shoot last shot.).
As it is now I don't believe it is possible for it to shoot even twice a turn.
>>95878920
>Have you considered that it's the German Leaders that might be too weak?
Yes. I suggested bringing down Moltke to 25 or buffing him a tiny bit to Kaiser anon, I believe we overestimated his redeployment ability. Might just be because I haven't played with named leaders like Grant and Eiffel in a while, and I'm not used to their position on the power curve. But they have lot of flexibility. Both Przewalski and Skobelev are great support pieces, very safe to send forward into combat, and will hold off the Morale break through their good LP pool for at least 2~3 turns.

I suppose it would be clearer if the Labour test just gives the Gun Ammo Feed 2 for the turn? If you succeed you can shoot twice and spend 1 AP towards your next reload. Next turn you continue reloading as usual, since you're spent, Ammo Feed or not, all the test would decide is if you get that extra shot *after* or not.
Also the point of the Worker is that the Worker doesn't *do* shit here, he gives one reroll per test. You get one free test per turn and you can't initiate more, so you'd get only one reroll from only one adjacent Worker. Yes, it is still explicitly abusive, since Workers can just sit next to it for the entire game and get Grazed to death one by one, but I generally follow the design philosophy of 'give everyone broken abusive shit, so it balances out, maybe'. But it's not important enough to argue about, so if you rule against it, I'm fine with it.
>Both Przewalski and Skobelev are great support pieces, very safe to send forward into combat, and will hold off the Morale break through their good LP pool for at least 2~3 turns.
Skobelev I can see, he could lose a Box and maybe downgrade to Tough. I suppose we could go back to Bayonets Before Bullets being just the Melee buff rather than out-of-turn activation thing, since he already has Seize the Initiative to cover that, but then I'd drop the LP cost by 1, and you'll end up with a weaker effect overall at the same price. But Przewalski has Mother-tier health, maybe drop Suvorov's Legacy and or Strength on him, so that he sucks more in Melee.

Moltke and Kr.Pr. Wilhelm II could be entirely re-designed, and keep their relatively high cost. Something along these lines.
Add Veteran of the Deep/Categorize the Schutztruppe Officier as a Hero.
Keep Moltke at 30 Silver. Add 'Pour le Mรฉrite' - should be a radius-based discipline buff. Add 'Bewegungskrieg' - LP sink, something to boost movement of infantry models.
Kr. Pr. Wilhelm II - I'm open to suggestions as to what would be appropriate. Perhaps just a cost reduction.

I know I said it as a joke but Heinrich getting Veteran of the Deep actually kinda works imho, I could see a list where taking him purely because he opens up Silver and you have to defend him no matter what. If all you cared about was a tiny bit of Fear [Deep] management, it would be worth it.

I would like to change that. This is to that effect. Available to all Epigean factions.
This is the Gunboat declawed. No gun, and Hired Hands as Crew instead of BAP (you could always load up a 1hex or 3hex artillery your faction has access to on it if you wanted).
Cheap because by default it doesn't do much else than provide you with very minimal action economy through Movement. Unless you take a Morlock Shaman or a Sea Witch somehow, it also won't go *that* far on most maps.
Deep factions besides Sky-People should get their own version. Might be something interesting for Atlantis and Atlan (I mean Mu as well but even then Greater Morlocks more or less have them covered... )

>explain first what you believe Hyperborean weapons should be
I think it depends on if the weapon is in a Hyperborean book or not. If it is, then it should serve the book, meaning it shouldn't outshine the unit using it, and should be as strong as it needs to be. I think outside of a Hyperborean book it should stand out as something odd and interesting (but not so much that it takes over the game). Because of the Hyperborean rule, and because (as far as i remember) you'll never have more than 3, i think a 2AP 6-7 Acc model should be able to remove a 2HP 5-6 Eva model the in 1 Activation with as much reliability as can be allotted.
With the Bayonet i was thinking give it Poison 3 and a Thrown profile when Affixed. I don't believe the Hemorrhage rule has ever gotten used outside of the Bayonet and Deathray, so i think it'd be better to just not have it. I don't have anything for the Deathray, and can't even remember it's rules, so i guess that can just be thrown out. The idea for the Clock Gun was the automatic firing thing, which wouldn't really work when you have access to PAIN, so that can just be forgotten too. Maybe throwing a gun like a spear is too much, but at least Hemorrhage should be replaced with Poison so that rule can be left behind.

How does this sound:
2 LP
After using this ability you may actiate up to 3 non-mounted, non-mechanical Soldier models in your expedition, and spend their AP to resolve Move actions. When doing so, they get +1 Movement, ignore Difficult Terrain and may use a single Discipline roll with a +1 Bonus when resolving any Hazard or Trap! tests.

Not very bombastic, but could be very useful for area denial, countering things like Crimean Welcome and in scenarios that have players trying to get to certain areas or objects first.

Sounds good to me. With the prone fire rule limiting German infantry movement effectively, this could compensate and give some flexibility. Maybe tack on a radius buff to discipline for Soldier models.
For Willy, I'm still lacking inspiration. Perhaps something for combined 'arms'? Terrible jokes aside. Could give Moltke something else and give Willy the discipline radius buff.

Possibly both. Its use might not be limited to a single campaign. But, coming up with it, I was thinking specifically of picrel, which is a campaign mode I've been wanting to design in order to facilitate remote/by post play as much as possible, since herding players in a campaign is going to be a big hurdle.
So, with an Overmap, the two main differences with the main game being that first you do not have limited Movement, you just risk (much) more the more you rush. Players secretly draw the movement path of their Expedition, reveal them all at once, then rolls based on how many hexes they moved through. Players with intersecting paths must play against each other.
The second is that any Expedition that goes below a certain size (thinking a 100 Silver) either goes back to your home base or disband. This is in part to avoid cheeky fuckers using the previous rule and declare that they zizag through the entire map with one model in order to bring down the entirety of the Deep on every player's head (you can still do that, somewhat, but you'll lose that 100 Silver automatically.).
So the idea with the Commercial Relations is that Expeditions can go to other player's Home Base or Outposts and trade with those, and the owning player may wish to allow or disallow this, but he'll have to commit an Expedition to stand guard or something.

-Deep Cover: On deployment, secretly select one non-character non-leader unit from your opponentโ€™s roster. (Write this down) The selected unit must have the soldier tag. If your opponent has no units with the soldier tag replace this model with an Existentialist Attache to deploy. This model inherits all attributes from the host unit. Your opponent controls the selected unit as normal, and you may not activate it. The opponentโ€™s leader and diplomat(?) units gain the โ€œJโ€™Accuse!โ€ ability
-โ€J'Accuse!โ€: (1 AP)
Select one unit within sight, then test awareness (not of that unit, of the one spending the AP). If failed, gain 1 dread. If successful, the Existentialist Embed is revealed. The Existentialist player immediately gains control of the unit if revealed. The other player does not count that model as dead.
-Note-Taker: (Need a pun name) (1 LP)
When your opponent spends LP within LoS of this unit, you may test awareness of the host model to gain an equivalent amount of LP. This ability remains active for the remainder of the turn. (So if the opponent uses 3 LPs worth of abilities over 3 AP worth of actions you still only need to spend once. [do you only need to test once?]) If the opponentโ€™s leader is targeting one or more soldier units, then you may spend an equivalent amount of LP to instead copy the ability being used on your own leaderโ€™s activation. (So if Cunningham uses 3 LP and 1 AP on the Leaden Duke ability, you may also spend 3 LP and 1 AP on the ability, once itโ€™s your leaderโ€™s turn.)

>COMMENTARY:
The Warfare Existentialists, by dint of being largely staffed by deserters, are not welcome in every army. This is hardly an obstacle for them. Indeed, some Existentialists prefer to secretly observe the development of tactics and strategy rather than influence them directly. Existentialist Embeds are said to become so engrossed in their part that they will risk killing their own, or even being shot themselves to avoid discovery.

This unit is screwy, but flavourful. Plus, I do think that the faction could use more than 2.5 units. 3.5 is a better number. The cost the enemy pays for the soldier that you replace is effectively banked and impossible for you to recoup if your unit is revealed (if you kill him before reveal then you still get silver as normal)
The opponentโ€™s job is to figure out which unit it must be based on LoS which is a good distraction on your end and might make him place his guys in bad positions. Also โ€œJโ€™Accuse!โ€ is a really good reference to have here because that really was a military spy incident.
This one could use some editing though, I wrote it a bit hastily and I know for a fact the wording needs to be tightened up in places. But getting feedback on the concept is a good start.

Sometimes Existentialists sign up for this just to get a chance to shoot at fellow Apologists they disagree with.

>>95904335
Glad you like it. I'm thinking that (at least for the first campaign) we could restrict a bit the faction choices, so that you could definitely have small Merc NPC outposts from which you can go recruit from, or if the right event happens, the Game Master can take control of.
Also, possibly, as a way to have players who can't participate regularly still have some way to play in.
I have a very definite goal in mind for this one so again it'll probably seem like I'm doing a lot of this on my own, but I am very open to feedback or suggestion, as you can see its very tentative.

years later above all by French journalists, novelists and playwrights; this mainly
reflected the fact that there were many in France who were dissatisfied with the political
realities of both the July monarchy and the Second Republic. Thus, these people began
to glorify the โ€œbetter daysโ€ of the Napoleonic period, and if Maximilian were indeed the
son of the Duke of Reichstadt then he would be the only direct living descendent from
the Napoleonic line, which in return would have also legitimized French support for the
Emperor Maximilian in Mexico in the 1860s."
I get the feeling this is going to be perfect. Thank you very much for this.

Ah, I guess it makes sense yes.
A small thing to help toward that, since I'm going to upload the Whalur book (finally) later on tonight, but I was thinking of changing the Cruel Master/Experienced Hunter rules, right now I don't think the Whalurs have the potential to generate enough PAIN tokens to ever make Emanations relevant, and that would be neat to see. So, I'm thinking the Whalur [x] rule would include PAIN token generation from Beasts and Deep targets, and perhaps the Cruel Master/Experienced Hunter could simply add on to that.

We mostly play 2e, the books are in the mediafire and on the disc*rd. Main Rule book for rules (duh), Worldbook for the lore (although if you want an intro the OG design links in the OP are probably the fastest way to learn about the setting).
We play on TTS or Owlbear, using teams or disc*rd for the voice chat. You could sit in a game (given my opponent is fine with it, of course), I would also be glad to give you an intro game if you wanted. I am getting swamped with rl stuff to do o it may take a bit of coordinating and advance to set up.

Savagery of Man is Frenzy when Shaken, ignore everything else about Morale.
So, through Frenzy, yes, but its a roundabout (the words will make you out-and-out... sorry) way of doing things. If they had too direct a way to damage themselves, it would be pretty easy to summon Ur-Ca reliably.

The body is a free Roman that came with Wargames Illustrated, and the head is from a WA Afghan. Spear is from Wargames factory Persians. If I buy a second copy of the magazine I should be able to get 8 phalanxmen total for the dirt cheap. Given the amount of weird stuff the Ottomans can do, and that torching the corpses require you to move in and spend AP, and that I can get to 20 models without even trying, its fine.
I think it should probably spend the torch however.

Whalur Vehicle

Tidal PAIN: This model may move through hexes with PAIN or Emanations in them as if they were Water. If it is in a hex with more than 1 PAIN it may move the excess PAIN with it, leaving one in each hex it moves through, in order to move through hexes which do not alredy have PAIN in them.

Kaminami: This model may move into an enemy occupied hex while resolving Tidal PAIN, if it does, this model Explodes with the following profile

I think it's glorious, the Pain tokens being moved with it is something I wanted to find a way to include in the faction as a whole, this serves this purpose perfectly.
Would you mind if the explosion only triggered on moving in larger models, and it could still resolve charges and attacks against single hex profiles?

Now I want to find a way to do the Chasse-Gallerie in Agartha.
I'll be forever saddened that there is no proper translation of this that doesn't massacre the language and character of the story.

Hyperballade: [2AP, 2LP]
>version 1
Until the end of the turn, models which activate adjacent to a model singing a Whaling Tune must test Discipline or suffer a / for every 3 models singing a Whaling Tune. Friendly models may voluntarily fail the test. Damage taken from this generates PAIN.
>version 2
Models that are the only one of their unit on the board must test Discipline or suffer a / for every 3 models singing a Whaling Tune. Friendly models may voluntarily fail the test. Damage taken from this generates PAIN.

Which version do you guys prefer? It's for the Scrimshaw Artist. I've been having trouble with him since had the idea for him. The problem is carving scrimshaw is a hard thing to represent in a fun way. He would have had the same problems as the Battlefield Photographer, so i just gave up on the idea of carving mid battle. So then it became a question of what scrimshaw items he would have access to, how, and what they would do. One obvious item was a whistle, and it just went from there. The idea now is that he can be recruited with one of 4 Ivory Instruments, those being Whistle, Flute, Clarinet, and Saxophone. This would be the Special Rule he gets from taking the most advanced Ivory Instrument, the Saxophone: Whistle would allow him to Rally; Flute would allow him to count as 3 models for Whaling Tune; the Clarinet would give him 1 or 2 LP; each Ivory Instrument would cost 10 silver more than the last, inheriting the abilities of the previous. I'm thinking the model would cost around 9 by default, with Whaling Tune and Field Skinning being his other Sp.Rules, and Whalur [1] being his one common.

Hear me out, take away the inheritance and instead give him elite so that you take a band's worth of them. Like the Dread Crew of Oddwood.

Also, if you wanted to go back to carving in combat you could have it be a silver-generating activity like Olm-Ranching where bones are turned into a more valuable material at the cost of AP and maybe pain.

Too cheap without Instruments? Maybe make Whistle free, make an Instrument mandatory, and up his price? Would gaining Leader through Clarinet be a good idea, or giving the option to gain Leader? Should the Instruments be cheaper? Sorry for the inquisition. My previous post was unnecessary, as i worked out that my main concern with v2 (that you could snip the enemy Leaders and such too easily) was unfounded, as by making him with middling Disc and health, he would die before most of his targets if you got greedy. His bushy beard works like a Gas Mask; i imagine he has a bushy beard.

Both versions enable starting to attempt summoning UR-CA right from the first turn, which may be abusive. Whalurs are going to be a very swingy mini-faction, insane against the right models, fairly poor against many others, so maybe its not so bad.
I'm not sure how I feel about the mechanic for the Scrimshaw Artist. Unlocking them at recruitment only feels like taking it halfway to its normal conclusion, which is to just have him be able to carve them out as well (and sell them!). Also, there ought to be more things to make than instruments.
Going over the book I'm thinking of setting these changes :
> buff Harpoons, Dual Weapon : Melee Acc 0 Eva 0 Pen 2 X/G Ranged Range 6, Long -2, Pen 3, Grievous, Cost 1
> Harpoon Gun Ranged Range 10, Long -2, Pen 4, Grievous, Reload 1+1Harpoon, Cost 3, Harpooned!
> Harpooned! is basically the rule from the Meteoric Harpoon on the Captain, made as a faction rule instead, perhaps the rowboat could allow sailors to do the same or something similar as well.
> UR-CA : Gains Mastery [LNGBKR] (should always have had it). Summoning him now costs 2 AP, can be done as many time as you want in a turn, but the model doing it must satisfy one of the following condition 1) within 5 of 7 hexes of beast/deep corpses, 2)within 5 of 7 Emanations hexes, 3) All models who could take this action have a Grievous, 4) All other models who could take this action are Frenzied.
Also I need to reword the PAIN token mechanic, it was "packaged" with Hyperborea and the emanation and now it no longer works, neither Whalurs or UR-CA are meant to be fueled by their own suffering, but by that they inflict on others. They just care a bit less than what would be otherwise healthy.

A question I suddenly had about the cosmology of the universe: If the world is hollow/filled with layers, and the first is Hyperborea, is there anything beyond Hyperborea? The moon at least exists, since men can shoot a rocket ship at it, and the Martian tripods imply there is a mars as well. But is Mars part of Hyperborea or its own thing? Is the solar system all there is? Or am I asking too many questions that will only give me headaches if I try to answer them?

>is there anything beyond Hyperborea?
There are whispers of a "10th Layer" which lays beyond both the 1st and the 9th and links the whole thing into an actual Loop. Its nature is completely unknown.
Hyperborea (the "land") constitute the whole of "space", or at least there's never been any distinction between them. But not everything from the 1st Layer is part of the society of psychic alien monsters that Epigeans refer to as Hyperboreans (the Pale Dweller at least show that at some point there weren't just evil aliens... ).
However the distances and sizes are completely wrong, and what we most often take to be stars are just the light of their cities. The Firmament dome essentially plays hall of mirrors on everything we see above it. Planets are much smaller as well. Since there is no point of comparison between them and "Earth", the "astronomical" model of the universe is no longer considered useful.

It is my assumption that, if things like distance and time become a bit screwy the deeper you go, then Hyperborea makes all the insanity of the deep seem quaint and sensible.
Of course Mu and Atlan and Lemuria and Atlantis and all the other Deepfolk are like that. They have a cultural memory of a time when the men and machines and machine-men and man-machines of Hyperborea descended from the heavens to scour the earth clean.
It is my belief that, within what passes for the skies of Hyperborea, there exist a number of worlds smaller than our own. They float in the void, hanging from the nothingness like ornaments on a tree. You can probably fall off of one and plummet all the way down to the Earth. These worlds without number are the homes of the many strange and vile beings that dwell above the Firmament. The Hyperboreans conquered them all, at some point, or at least the vast majority.
It is my fear that whatever lies above our heads is utterly unknowable. It may exist in some capacity which defies understanding, not merely passively but actively. Any attempt to discern the true nature of life above the Firmament complicates it further and, to those who dwell there, is perceived as an act of violence.

>2e anon, on the subject of Bashi Bazouks, what do you think about instead of Dual Wielding giving them a Born in the Saddle analogue, but for Handguns only
I prefer that a lot to the current version, which makes them feel too much like American Gunslingers imho. Also, Dual Wielder should be worth a lot, on top of their good profile, Terror and the Husk rules they are a bit obnoxious.
I'll be posting the batrep (as well as the KoB vs NSR) next thread, but some point of contention from the game
> Husked Tartadodon is insanely good. I would suggest bumping it to 45 Silver, cutting down 1 Health from both Limbs and Body, and the cannon at -3. And although it would be funny to pull off, resurrecting it really shouldn't be as easy as other models. Maybe say that you need to succeed 1 Res per hexes? So, not impossible, but definitely not easy.
> Remove the Health bonus from the Husked Horse, make the Dread from the charge on a single failed Evasion test instead of Failed Evasion then Failed Discipline to compensate. 3x Health Husks are a vile vile thing and should be limited not just by cost, even Elite may not be enough, because
> lol Necromantic Jihad is fucking nuts. Strength 9 Husks do not care about Bayonets, at all. Obviously its only the Last Sultan who can call it but even then, Tsardom anon had 2 turns where I honestly think his melee attacks were completely detrimental to him. Either we limit that, or perhaps another way would be to make it more widespread (having a Trait grant it) while either lowering the Strength of their models to below 5, OR putting a limit on the number of Husked trigger a single model can have in a turn.

>OR putting a limit on the number of Husked trigger a single model can have in a turn.
And if we do that, we could have Necromancy provide a spell which generate a pool of Husked triggers.
Another thing we tried and which I will go more in details next thread, but worth mentioning ahead, we tried a different version of the Hidden rules. Its fairly similar in spirit, you go Hidden then accumulate AP, then either Hidden Move or Hidden Charge. The difference is that the Hidden AP left over the Charge Attack translate into a bonus to Accuracy instead of just allowing you to flail 8 times in a row. It has less potential for going overboard, which will encourage using it sparingly, and perhaps more than once in a game. The bonus might not be enough, but not missing those attacks feels good.
Also, just Accuracy for the Attack, and the Awareness test on behalf the the target only triggers if its from the front, and only for the purpose of canceling the bonus, not the attack.
I think if we go with that then Hidden on multiple models may be more viable.

Alright, abd the subject of testing Przhevalsky vs Garnier.
It just occured to me that with the current Evasion system Garnier would actually become insanely strong. Evasion is essentially armor now and it's even *better*, because you can't actually penetrate it reliably. Garnier's playstyle kinda implied you'd be Dodging with him and the Tonkin team before (or relying on Marine's special) , now they'd be shrugging off damage without sinking AP on top of getting the Accuracy bonuses. I think a good way to restrict it would be to make Evasion provide damage reduction only if the model has cover and/or is Prone (vs Ranged), and then you could make barricades function like Heavy Armor but for Evasion (2 degree reduction). I suggest we test it like this, and as I said, I'm fine playing either side.

Evasion is indeed better than Armour (but not Heavy Armour). I'm not sure I see problem however, even with Nimble (which is mostly the Troupe de la Marine) it still only lowers by a / each time, no more. If the French had more AP generation it might be a problem but there's not a whole lot more than any other Colonial faction, its pretty much only Rations.
France is in a similar position as the Tsardom for the shooting&reloading speed, it has better range but that's it. Dodging even once comes at a certain momentum cost.
Its just a /, maybe you are thinking Nimble works for everyone like it does for the Amazons, which it doesn't. Nimble normally just let you roll a second dice, you choose one result. For Amazons they have additional rules that say they get to reduce by / for each dice thrown on the Evasion test, but in other cases, you can never reduce it more than /. So shooting at the French with Garnier and the Tonkin team will almost always result in a X, appart from the Critical Dodge (which Nimble does help a bit with, but not that much).
