I'm excited that the US is going to start seeing the new expansion for Earthborne rangers roll out. This is a list of the box contents, the line up with the OP image. The big box comes with one playset of ranger cards, while you can pickup extra player card bricks for multiple people to build with. The deckbuilding is by far one of my favorite aspects of the game, so getting new classes and building options is wonderful. You can always blend these new classes with what's already out there, making this a broad expansion for ranger decks as well as a wonderful new campaign to extend the story line out from the core set's.

They killed every blue deck that's not Satan City and Kidku but didn't hit the real problem which is the Satan City engine so Haloku is almost literally still the same power level. They did make a creature subtheme, it's tied into Kanan and Ezra for whatever weird reason.

But moreover SWU just doesn't do thematic archetypes in that way. Forget "Hoth", you can't even really do a "rebels" deck, let alone a competitive one. It's just very bizarre, there's next to zero support for theme-driven archetypes, it's all based on mechanical synergies instead.

There's a lights on, lights off mechanic in the underground campaign of Rangers that I forgot about. Getting excited to go spelunking soon, just waiting patiently for my backer rewards. I think this is brilliant card design, and it speaks to why I love this game so much. All too common in co-op games you have to kill something to progress to the next stage, but this one is asking you to shed a little light on the situation, and where that light may come from is a puzzle itself. It certainly beats "kill the great troll that stole your wizard hat to progress."

How do you buy cards? I'm a big Gundam fan and I wan to collect the cards in the upcoming game, but from what little I know of the state of CCGs, all the cards for popular games get instantly bought by broccoli-headed streamers and obese scalpers.

you can buy boxes and starter decks online after release. OR when the launch events are visable on the bandai app sometime this month find the closest store near you that is hosting an event and go to those and buy through them. Also the events usually get you packs and or promo cards

As for collecting rather than playing youd want one of each starter deck and a box or two then just buy/trade for the singles you are missing

I have a sizable collection of prereboot product but only the first cycle has been complete, with no promo or exclusive addons. I don't really care for the fan projects unless they knock your socks off they're so good.

Since I’ve only collected the revised content, I’ve picked up the alt-art starter decks, which are made exclusively from OOP cards. I’ve also added the "Core Card Alt Arts and Other Gorgeousness", as well as the "2023 Art Hero Cards" and "2023 Art Player Cards". These help fill in a lot of out-of-print cards with minimal overlap and are still "official" cards, just with different art on them.

I’ve been meaning to check out the ALeP (A Long-extended Party) content. It's a fan-led continuation of the game after FFG stopped publishing. It adds new player and hero cards, along with fully developed campaigns. Supposedly, it's very good, but there’s no rush to dive into it if you haven’t gone through the official content yet. You'll still be able to get the cards printed after 30 June, just at a higher price, so nothing there is technically "rare".

Nice. As for myself I built one deck for the four professions, and then I eagerly went on to play the one I enjoyed the most. I ended up on Explorer with some strong connection synergies and trail navigation. The sheepdog can serve as a running back by loading up on progress and transferring it with homeward bound (the incredible journey) to get us out of any tough spots. I like having a bit of card recursion and soothing too, it makes this a very resilient deck. Of course focus can be a bit of a challenge for this character, but there's other ranger decks I have configured to lend out to friends or play dual-fisted that compliment this one well. Right here is my cowboy though, with an insatiable wanderlust and a heart of gold.

Here's a brief rundown:

See that four way split colored card towards the bottom center? That's your stat block, and it is arranged in any combination of 3 in one color and 1 in another with the 2s padding out the middle ground. So for example, there's 3 spirit 3 cards, each has the 1 is in any of the other three colors. So for character creation you have 12 different combinations of stats, and these values inform what you can build your deck with. This means you will always have one thing you're special at and one thing that you struggle with.

Each of those stats generates colored action points of a sort that you need to spend for specific colored costs in the game. The top left number on the playing cards is how much it costs to field the card. In addition, the bottom left side has a little plate that explains what class set the card belongs to as well as the stat requirement to add it to your deck. You would be unable to include a 3 spirit card without a 3 in your spirit stat. On your turn when you use the card, you spend those 3 points which are tracked with separate colored tokens.

You take turns one at a time between each ranger, performing actions from your hand or field and spending the appropriate amount of resources to do so. These resource pools will refresh after there are no more actions from all team members to take and the party performs a rest. After a rest you refill every color back up and draw a card to begin a new round of romping around in the wilderness.

Resources aren't used just to playing cards, they are also used to perform tests, which are skill checks made in order to see if you succeed at the task. Most location cards can be interacted with by performing a specific colored test, which might be a stat you're good at, middling or terrible. To shoo the doe you commit those resources and symbols by discarding from hand, found on the right, which add up to an effort total toward the check; these are spent win or fail.

I actually made a kinda bizarre explorer once, using that paths we've roamed before card in conjuction with perfect recall. They effectively make an infinite loop of moments and ability (literally infinite if you can sustain a meditation bed)... Which was useful, because they had only 1 Fit, lol. Hard to boil it down really. Really all you're doing is clearing people or places, but each class+background combination has so many different approaches. And then a reward card can come along and completely upend your playstyle. No spoilers, but my average sneaky techy found a device that could predict the future, and suddenly she's playing less like a wrench monkey and more like a techno seer. I had a damage-based wizard do a 180 on his current spell-base build because he bought a weapon that comboed with another card to basically become a tactical nuke. Half the fun is figuring out how all these cards play off each other (which is why I'm doing a fully random campaign), and it's so varied even within sets that I dunno if I could pinpoint any archetypal playstyles.

For me it's the Challenge deck that really makes the game come to life. There's a separate deck with your 4 spread of stat colors on it and values that are either positive, negative, or neutral. When you perform a skill check, you draw from the challenge deck to resolve everything, after you've collected all your effort together. If your check had a requirement of [3] as the target number and you had submitted (3) effort, the challenge deck could subtract {-1} from your gains and force you to fail the task. You can try again another turn, but the cards and resources are spent regardless of the outcome. This means discarding cards isn't as choice, but sometimes you simply don't have enough stats to cover the requirements. Can you get lucky with a 1 stat on a [3] check? Yes, you could get a +2 in that given field, which would make you successful, but it is very risky to do so.

Also note there's a colored crest on the bottom of every challenge card, and these will trigger any cards in play that are keyed off of that specific event and will all trigger their effects, one at a time, until all face up cards with the crest are resolved. This can result in cascading failures if the wrong symbol shows up at an inopportune time, erasing progress you made for an entire round in one swoop. So every check you make will cause the world around you to react, and the outcome you get might be one you do not want to happen. Predators can ambush an animal you're trying to interact with, or a friendly person you met on the trail can get attacked by predators and die if you can't ward them off. Some weather events might make traversing terrain easier in that instant, or harder. It's really unique how they tied the whole game together into these skill checks and the crests that challenges spark the moment they are flipped.

Whats a realistic ETA on FaB prices coming down? I was thinking about getting into it because my LGS runs events but I guess I'll just practice on Talishar til things stabilize. Also, thoughts on a starter hero? Thinking of running either Teklovossen, Oscilio, or Jarl. My understanding is the first two will probably be legal for a good while and the third will benefit from a reprint set soon, so he might be (relatively) cheap to build later in paper. Should mention my only previous experience with the game is playing the Riptide and Arakni blitz decks.

The price issues for new product caused by supply will still take at least 6 months to shake out. With luck the next set will have more supply than Hunted and Highseas, but expect it to be conservative.
The price issues around generic staples might improve on some unknown timeline, but it's clear they're happy being cautious with reprints. You won't see a Konami-style nuke.

Aside from that, LSS clearly doesn't want FaB to be a cheap game, they're leaning into the fact their base is generally older and more employed than the usual TCGoid. They seem to want it cheap enough to get into, but costly enough to trigger people's sense of commitment - FaB is dadcore for a reason. I'm sure they think $2k for a meta list is too much, but I doubt they feel the same way about $800. Do with that what you will.

Anecdotally yes, sales are pretty good. LGS couldn't keep set 7 in stock, and set 8 has also sold pretty well. I agree with the other anon that this is a bit of a lame duck set, but overall I think it's in a steady spot, and the combination of big box sales and in-person LGS sales are high enough to keep it going for a while, even if sealed on tcgplayer doesn't move as you'd expect (largely due to LGS having sealed product for sale a week before online/big box, imo)

Game is fairly easy to learn but certainly has as much of a skill component as Pokémon, probably less than magic or yugioh. Disney is a big draw, the player base runs wider age range and more mixed sex than most games. And a meta deck isn't terribly expensive, $100-$200 for most.

They printed enough shit in lower rarities to build cheap decks. Rapunzel is still $35-$40 but sad beast is like $10 and outside of about one card per set that ends up in the $30+ range, all the other staples are $5-$20 and many are $1 or less.

Amethyst/Steel is almost all rares or below and runs about $100, depending on the particular build. Hyper aggro is even cheaper, I think you can make it for about $60 and most of that is 4x Daisy.
