does anyone have a good red color system or combos for Word bearers? I have a batch of 10 legionaries that I have yet to prime.

Not sure if it's gonna be TTC berzerker red or khorne red as a basecoat. I prefer a warmer red but not looking like blood angels.

I want something I can mix with the basecoat to use as a highlight and maybe one more highlight color to throw in there and brighten it up.

For me, it's situational.

In a lot of cases, this makes sense - especially when I'm dealing with older models that have a slotta-tab between their feet. Sometimes I do part on the bases and part off, even in the same unit.

Here, for example, it made a lot of sense for me to attach most of the Death Company to their bases since they're playing the 41st millennium equivalent of "The Floor is Lave" and jumping off their tactical rocks... which are going to be integrated into the bases. Not all of them are, though, so some of the models are pinned on corks so I can work on them separately and attach them to their bases later.

If you want warmer highlights then mixing in an orange (less value jump) or a yellow (greater jump) would work well. Can also try colder shadow colors if the red ends up feeling too warm. For shits and giggles a colder highlight color would be a pale yellow mixed in to get a desaturated pink, but that really wants to be left as an edge/extreme highlight color.

We got shitty single sprue. single pose sets like the current chaos cultists, and we got awesome kits like the Blooded with 30+ heads and 25+ weapon options options for the 10 guys.
We have the Cadian Command squad, with lots of options, we have the Krieg Command squad, with less options, and we got the Minka command squad with zero options.
With modern GW, pretty much everything is possible. I have not built all Kill Team sets yet, but from what i've seen, they are all among the better kits.

Good that I tested this Mr Hobby flat "coat" (why not call it varnish?) on test piece of plastic - it melts paint. If I would try to use it on my actual model, it would not end well.

At the other hand, both Mig and AK spray can matte varnishes seems to work fine, former being a bit glossy, latter being more matte. Too bad I could only do short test with piece of plastic because whole day is windy as hell.

This business in 10th Edition of "the unit can only have what comes in the box" is really starting to grate on me. I understand wanting to tell a narrative story in Kill Team and have specific models to maintain a sense of balance at such a granular scale, but then putting the Kill Team into WH40K and calling it a unit there - along with all its Kill Team restrictions - takes a lot of the fun and flexibility away from what I feel could be much more characterful units.

I'm specifically thinking about Space Marine Scout Squads and the Adeptus Mechanicus Servitor Battleclade, which are just their Kill Teams as-is.

lacquers are much better suited for airbrushing and can be used over acrylic base provided you build it up with thin layers and don't douse the model with lacquer thinner but hand brushing lacquers over water based acrylics will absolutely fuck them up
Hell, hand brushing lacquers over lacquer base will also reactivate previous lacquer layers just because lacquer thinner will eat up any paint you throw at it
That said it IS possible to hand brush lacquers (ask jap modellers) but it is basically a separate skill with its own learning curve - and certainly not over acrylics

I don't recommend this, they dry insanely fast. Pooling often gets missed, unless you focus on only tiny areas at a time. Also, this doesn't really work on flat surfaces.

They work for small areas of skin/flesh, not monsters, but 60mm or smaller.
Cloth, fur, feathers, wood, a metallic look over a silver/iron base (I did this for warpstone), spiky armor like DEldar have.
Maybe other stuff but this what I've done with it. Obviously a drybrush over most of these will be even better

I just got done base coating some Skorpekh Destroyers that I tried my hand at reposing. The push-fit joints were more annoying to work around than I expected. Pic rel is the WIP ones next to some finished ones in their default poses. I don't think the new poses are as apparent as I wanted, except for maybe the one on the far right.

The other thing here is that Citadel makes two different kinds of Contrast paint.

Blood Angels Red works as you describe - the original type of Contrast paint Citadel manufactured. Slather that over a white undercoat, and you'll get something that looks similar to the more complicated process of painting the entire thing with Evil Sunz Scarlet and washing it afterward with Agrax Earthshade. The "self-highlighting " part of these Contrasts really isn't bright enough for the Second Edition red that I like, but if you were in a hurry to get tabletop ready, it would probably pass muster.

Compare this to Baal Red. Baal Red over a white undercoat is a really intense red, like something you'd expect to see on a flashy sports car. It doesn't have any of the depth that Blood Angels Red does. the advantage here is that you get this intense red coat without having to worry about thinning your paints, so if you're a beginner, you might be able to skip that part for now ... and if you know what you're doing and this colour is what you're after, it can be a nice shortcut.

Depends a lot where you are from. Those Chinese have improved their logistics by a lot. Pre-Corona, 3-4 weeks were standard for Aliexpress shipments here in Germany, but nowadays they manage to ship from china within a week, if the item is already in a warehouse in Poland or Spain, it arrives in 2-3 days. Only Amazon is faster usually, they deliver within 24 hours if the goods are already in a hub nearby.
If i order from any random online (hobby) store from Germany, i can expect around 5-7 days of handling/shipping time too, so for stuff like bases, tufts and other hobby materials, Aliexpress is unbeatable at the moment.

I sprayed (AK "matte" varnish from spray can) upper section instead of brushing ("ultra matte" with contrast medium) like lower half but I will pretend it was supposed to look differently). To be honest, I would prefer to be able to apply varnish by brush instead. Spraycan is at disadvantage most the time - it require spraying outside while better part of the year have too low temperature and those that do have proper one, often have strong winds or raining. Plus, up close it appears slightly similar to some sort of carpace (in this case this effect is less prominent, AP varnish looks very grainy while being absurdly durable to compensate - you can run knife across cured layer and it won't even notice). Too bad that all my attempts at. Rush applying varnish ends up with one flaw or another (change in colouration, chalky effect, etc).

Cockpit glass is actually made with thinned Vallejo fluorescent blue over their Metal Color Silver. I did something similar before and liked the effect so replicated it here.

these guys are "done." I regret using wolf grey over Fenrisian grey since the fatigues came out a bit too dark.

They're a bit rough but they're satisfactory for a small batch job. They're still missing decals and the freehand 122nd regiment number on the shoulders but it's fine. got bigger hobby fish to fry.

Plenty. Brown base, ap emperors gold, vallejo gold + brown ink + gsw gold pigments, dark brown oil, vallejo gold+ gsw gold in that order. The gsw pigments give it an insane shine that is hard to capture in pics, the overall colour too. It looks quite close to actual, worn metal irl.

Purple to contrast with the green skin and orange caps, a dark ivory to more blend in and let the skin and caps be the stars, maybe a reddish brown to compliment the orange without being as background as the dark ivory. Could go blueish white for max contrast with the caps and echo the blue green skin. Depends on how "visible" you want them to end up in the model.

This discussion reminds me of a purple metallic paint I bought many years ago.
Every project I started for at least a year I stopped and considered if I could find a use for that paint, eventually I realized that it will never be right to use it for trim or weapons or mechanical joints, it's got to be used for armor panels, but that would have to be done for a force that is thematically right for a purple, and itself should be part of a collection where I have a larger amount of silver/gold/bronze done on armor panels so that it would fit in without sticking out in a bad way.
So I've never ended up using that paint.

I've been trying to find someone making replacement decals, but Etsy broke their search again if you're using adblockers and I'm not seeing them anywhere else.

You can make your own decals fairly cheaply with a printer.. as long as it prints in white. Or you're willing to paint a white circle on the model where the skull goes. There's versions of the decal paper available for both laser and inkjet, and I've done them up in the library before.

I use liquitex and its fine, you don't even need 50/50 just a drop or so is plenty. Do note that while it makes for very easy glazing and wet blending it can cause some paints to dry shinier than usual. A non-issue if you're planning on varnishing but worth noting.

I'm none of these anons, spend the extra couple bucks and get either gamblin or mona lisa brands of odorless mineral spirits. Gamblin has almost no odor, mona lisa has a slight odor but not any more than the oil paints themselves. I got into model painting a few months ago. I decided to get the Warcrow starter box because it looks cool and my friend plays. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else finds it easier to paint some models disassembled and then glue them together and touch up whatever paint you fucked up? So no, using smelly white spirits over odorless is a pretty retarded idea all in all
