I'm starting to feel like a retard for having always attached my minis to bases before painting either minis or bases.
>>95846929it's never too late
does anyone have a good red color system or combos for Word bearers? I have a batch of 10 legionaries that I have yet to prime.
Not sure if it's gonna be TTC berzerker red or khorne red as a basecoat. I prefer a warmer red but not looking like blood angels.
I want something I can mix with the basecoat to use as a highlight and maybe one more highlight color to throw in there and brighten it up.
>>95846929I poster tack them to the base for priming+painting. Then you can take them off, do the base (the footprint tells you what not to base), then attach
>>95846947Now's probably the best time for me to change. Just started Tsons and am currently semi-clueless on what basing scheme I'll do, so I thought I'd paint up some empty bases.
>>95846952>poster tackI think I did that for a single character, once.
>>95846929>having always attachedFor me, it's situational.
In a lot of cases, this makes sense - especially when I'm dealing with older models that have a slotta-tab between their feet. Sometimes I do part on the bases and part off, even in the same unit.
Here, for example, it made a lot of sense for me to attach most of the Death Company to their bases since they're playing the 41st millennium equivalent of "The Floor is Lave" and jumping off their tactical rocks... which are going to be integrated into the bases. Not all of them are, though, so some of the models are pinned on corks so I can work on them separately and attach them to their bases later.
>>95846929This is the original and best way to paint your miniatures, plebs don't know but it saves you feeling the need to buy a painting handle.
Any of you lovely friends currently working on malifaux minis?
>>95847013You're not just using a random dowel or cork?
>writing a hobby blog
Is it even a thing any more in 2025? I kinda come back to that idea every now and then, to write down some lore and hobby texts about my 40k dudes and maybe random other stuff, and i really do not want to get into youtube.. but are people still reading blogs?
With the upcoming KT box around the corner, i finally decided its time to work on the Servitors i already have.
>>95847070Unlikely, a lot of people cannot focus on a paragraph let alone a blog now. Brain rot is a very real thing that a lot of people downplay.
>>95846929Depends on the mini for me. Like I'm not going to spend hours on detailed bases for regular infantry guys, but an Lt gets one.
>>95846996>Just started Tsons and am currently semi-clueless on what basing scheme I'll doIf you're doing the official scheme I think desert bases go really well with both the colors and their egyptian vibe
>>95847048Why? I have the base to hold onto.
inb4
>but I can't paint the undersides of things easily!Anything in that position should be left in shadow anyway.
>>95846948If you want warmer highlights then mixing in an orange (less value jump) or a yellow (greater jump) would work well. Can also try colder shadow colors if the red ends up feeling too warm. For shits and giggles a colder highlight color would be a pale yellow mixed in to get a desaturated pink, but that really wants to be left as an edge/extreme highlight color.
>>95847086I was hoping that the team would be tech priests and skittles with a heavy weapon servitor or two instead of two priests and a bunch of servitors.
>>95847231I agree, that would have been perfect for KT. But ignoring KT and looking at the minis themselves, a good servitor set (they did not show the sprues yet, but i hope for lots of options) was kinda needed for 40k for a long time now. It will potentially be a kitbashers dream.
>>95847100It really is a shame. Maybe i'll look into Instagram, but the plattform itself is disgusting.
>>95847303>It will potentially be a kitbashers dreamI highly doubt this will happen with modern GW. It'll probably be monopose servitors with no options.
>>95847330We got shitty single sprue. single pose sets like the current chaos cultists, and we got awesome kits like the Blooded with 30+ heads and 25+ weapon options options for the 10 guys.
We have the Cadian Command squad, with lots of options, we have the Krieg Command squad, with less options, and we got the Minka command squad with zero options.
With modern GW, pretty much everything is possible. I have not built all Kill Team sets yet, but from what i've seen, they are all among the better kits.
Good that I tested this Mr Hobby flat "coat" (why not call it varnish?) on test piece of plastic - it melts paint. If I would try to use it on my actual model, it would not end well.
At the other hand, both Mig and AK spray can matte varnishes seems to work fine, former being a bit glossy, latter being more matte. Too bad I could only do short test with piece of plastic because whole day is windy as hell.
Finished up a lich, and did some stepping shading/highlighting on the wizard. How's it looking?
>>95847474>If I would try to use it on my actual model, it would not end wellonly if you're unironically retarded
>>95847744looks cool. Do you plan to post your recipe?
>>95847086>>95847231>>95847303This business in 10th Edition of "the unit can only have what comes in the box" is really starting to grate on me. I understand wanting to tell a narrative story in Kill Team and have specific models to maintain a sense of balance at such a granular scale, but then putting the Kill Team into WH40K and calling it a unit there - along with all its Kill Team restrictions - takes a lot of the fun and flexibility away from what I feel could be much more characterful units.
I'm specifically thinking about Space Marine Scout Squads and the Adeptus Mechanicus Servitor Battleclade, which are just their Kill Teams as-is.
>>95847785On test piece it clearly smeared long cured acrylic paint. On model it would do the same. What do you suggest I missed here?
>>958478811) are you using mr super clear (lacquer) or mr topcoat (water-based)?
2) did you let the acrylics cure for a day before varnishing them?
3) did you spray in multiple light passes or did you just fucking blast the paint with varnish?
4) did you fuck with the varnished layer in any way soon (a couple hours) after spraying?
I use mr super clear on all my minis and never ran into any problems so far
>>95847921disregard point 2 since you've mentioned that the paint is cured
>>95847921I was explicitly told to use this one from the pic along with their leveling thinner and told that it won't affect water based acrylic paints. It was not sprayed but applied with brush and mixed with thinner in 1:3 ratio, one coat and left there but it was smearing it right away.
>>95848068>It was not sprayed but applied with brushniggy...
never, fucking never even think about hand brushing lacquers ever again
>>95848101How cool is that, scale modellers are telling me to use this one, claiming that it won't damage the paint (yes, I explicitly asked about water based paints just to be sure), it fucking dissolve the paint instead and /WIP/ is telling me that I'm retarded for following this advice. Fuck this world.
And yes, they claimed that they applied it with brush. I don't fucking know anymore.
>>95848167Did you ask them specifically if you can brush it on? Because I think it's highely likely they just assumed you're going to spray it
>>95848173ok nevermind then
>>95848167lacquers are much better suited for airbrushing and can be used over acrylic base provided you build it up with thin layers and don't douse the model with lacquer thinner but hand brushing lacquers over water based acrylics will absolutely fuck them up
Hell, hand brushing lacquers over lacquer base will also reactivate previous lacquer layers just because lacquer thinner will eat up any paint you throw at it
That said it IS possible to hand brush lacquers (ask jap modellers) but it is basically a separate skill with its own learning curve - and certainly not over acrylics
See example https://www.zimmerit.moe/kvltworx-lacquer-hand-painting-tutorial-part-1/
>>95846948Try this if you want.
>>95847804Kill Team I can understand since it has its own rules and unit abilities that need to be balanced, but its still a bummer.
>>95846996when in doubt glue sand and paint in a sandy or greyish color, works fine for any 40k model, can also add any debris on top, be it a wire, a chunk of sprue or leftover bits...
>>95848394that thinner is what, 60% IPA? and the coat itself maybe 40%? so yeah you are hand stripping you models with 50% alcohol
>>95848394hard to say, maybe, maybe not
maybe they misunderstood and thought you asked about using lacquers first acrylics second
maybe they are all gurus of hand brushing lacquers and know all the skills, tips and tricks for it to actually work
or maybe they did just want to fuck with you
>>95848418also don't forget 20-30% MIBK on top of IPA - MIBK being a close relative of MEK (commonly used as a plastic cement)
>>95848313why put in all this work when you could get similar / better results with just khorne red base + some highlights?
>>95848575Because then you wouldn't spend $35+ on 4 GW paints
>>95848575Paint something that's khorne red with just thin evil sunz/wild rider highlights and you'll see the difference
>>95846948I would go with a bright pink/magenta, would probably be baller
I should have known that 40k's trimmiest boys would be murder to do with a gradient. Should I go with white all over, or pick out a slightly brighter and redder burgundy to go all over?
>>95848590Maybe with a microscope.
>Want to use contrast paints to give my metallics a unique color
>Everything becomes a splotchy uneven mess
Who asked for this dogshit. Can't believe it's marketed towards "beginners".
>>95848657that's some grainy ass airbrush job dude
>>95848676>>95848676Go back to painting your "above tabletop standard" craft slop, faggot.
>>95848582You could substitute those for $1 chinkshit paints from aliexpress though
>>95848657Something went wrong, it looks like a poorly printed 3d model
>>95848678something something bad workman blames his tools, skill issue etc etc
>>95848706Yeah, I got sick of painting my test model and gave up. I should probably dunk it ipa now that I think of it.
>>95848693Someone sure is living in your head rent-free.
Ogre I'm just about done with
>>95848678first time using contrasts?
forget everything you know about painting, flood the fucking thing, then clean your brush and remove the excess where it pools, you cant just 'paint layers' with contrat paints, you gotta flood it so it can do its thing
>>95848855I don't recommend this, they dry insanely fast. Pooling often gets missed, unless you focus on only tiny areas at a time. Also, this doesn't really work on flat surfaces.
>>95848901nta
They work for small areas of skin/flesh, not monsters, but 60mm or smaller.
Cloth, fur, feathers, wood, a metallic look over a silver/iron base (I did this for warpstone), spiky armor like DEldar have.
Maybe other stuff but this what I've done with it. Obviously a drybrush over most of these will be even better
>>95848901yeah you can't do this on he whole model at the same time, or a tank
see this, clickbait and retardation aside results are results
>https://youtu.be/IhholrozptI?feature=shared&t=244
I just got done base coating some Skorpekh Destroyers that I tried my hand at reposing. The push-fit joints were more annoying to work around than I expected. Pic rel is the WIP ones next to some finished ones in their default poses. I don't think the new poses are as apparent as I wanted, except for maybe the one on the far right.
>>95848855The other thing here is that Citadel makes two different kinds of Contrast paint.
Blood Angels Red works as you describe - the original type of Contrast paint Citadel manufactured. Slather that over a white undercoat, and you'll get something that looks similar to the more complicated process of painting the entire thing with Evil Sunz Scarlet and washing it afterward with Agrax Earthshade. The "self-highlighting " part of these Contrasts really isn't bright enough for the Second Edition red that I like, but if you were in a hurry to get tabletop ready, it would probably pass muster.
Compare this to Baal Red. Baal Red over a white undercoat is a really intense red, like something you'd expect to see on a flashy sports car. It doesn't have any of the depth that Blood Angels Red does. the advantage here is that you get this intense red coat without having to worry about thinning your paints, so if you're a beginner, you might be able to skip that part for now ... and if you know what you're doing and this colour is what you're after, it can be a nice shortcut.

those moldlines... yikes
>>95849224Yeah, he definitely looks middle aged.
>>95846929I'm starting to feel like a retard for never having sub-assemblied. Though I hate it, I recognize it's useful sometimes.
>>95847793I just wet blended dark red to red to orange
Washed the top in flesh tone and the bottom in dark blue
Then dry brushed silver over
The green is dirty down rust
This is todays experiment
Finishing up my dino. Regret the blue claws.
Reposting since the last thread died right after. Making headway on my starter fleet.
>>95845236Looking good!
>>95850658They do blend in too much. Easy enough to go over them with a black or white
>>95850688very pretty anon
>>95850487idea is good and they are painted really well but they lack some contrast and bases being the same color does not help
>>95850658looks good, you could give claws and scales a slight lighter hihlight to make them more even if you are worried about the color
>>95850658I'd work on those claws to turn them into either white with blue shading or black with blue high lights
>>95846865 (OP)Small wip on my Helbrecht, the armour is basically done, now I just started on the cloth and some details. I've actually enjoyed a lot painting golden armour, almost makes me want to get a Custodes kill team or something. Now I go slumber
>>95851096very nice but did you really order extra expensive branded cutting mat from greenstufworld instead of walking to your local craft store
anyone have a guide on how to do volumetric highlights on black with an airbrush?
>>95851711You do it the same way you volumetric highlight anything else with an airbrush, while following the rules of highlighting black with any other tool. There's nothing special about combining the two.
>>95851096Nice gold, what paint(s) did you use?
>>95851899was more looking for the paints used for it
>>95852009i'm not wearing any pants

Anyone know where I can find a vicar amelia (from bloodborne) models that scales well with 28mm figures? I want to paint one for an oathmark army as a monsterous unit. I know there is one in the board game, but I dont think ill buy a 90$ boardgame just for like 1/4 of the models in it.
>>95849224ouf, I should have caught that before painting!
That what I get for putting shit together in poor lighting and rushing to the paint step.
>>95849381; )
>>95846929sub assemblies and not basing your mini before painting are retarded
>>95851398>instead of walking to your local craft store>not just buying from your trusty chink friends for a fraction of a price the craft store would've charged youwhat a sucker lmao
>>95853245you really do get lots of miles from that chink thing
doesnt ordering from china take like a month minimum
>>95853344Oh I'm sorry I thought it was obvious it was a shitpost. I was making fun of the resident schizo, I'm not retarded enough to wait weeks to save $5 or something
>>95853344Depends a lot where you are from. Those Chinese have improved their logistics by a lot. Pre-Corona, 3-4 weeks were standard for Aliexpress shipments here in Germany, but nowadays they manage to ship from china within a week, if the item is already in a warehouse in Poland or Spain, it arrives in 2-3 days. Only Amazon is faster usually, they deliver within 24 hours if the goods are already in a hub nearby.
If i order from any random online (hobby) store from Germany, i can expect around 5-7 days of handling/shipping time too, so for stuff like bases, tufts and other hobby materials, Aliexpress is unbeatable at the moment.
>>95851398Hello GSW-shizo.
Cutting Mat A4 on GSW: 7,16โฌ
(cheapest) Cutting Mat A4 on Amazon: 5,99โฌ
Aliexpress: 3โฌ

Buying directly from China wins, as always.
But you did not recommend that. Do you really think any local store will sell such a mat for less than 10โฌ? lmao.
>>95853474I'm fairly sure he was just memeing as well
Working on my first Ultramarine. Head is magnetized, I suck at faces but will post when Iโm done.
>>95853344On my last order from Temu, I had more problems with the shitty courier company they chose. It took less days for the parcel to arrive into my country, than it took to deliver it to my mailbox afterwards.
Starting an undead project, gonna test ideas for paint scheme on this little rank of lads
>>95848656I actually did that for my khorne berzerkers which did look awesome but now I don't want my word bearers standing next to them with the same colored armor...
>>95853845Hell yeah dude.
I sprayed (AK "matte" varnish from spray can) upper section instead of brushing ("ultra matte" with contrast medium) like lower half but I will pretend it was supposed to look differently). Overall, Battlemech made out of spare parts and scratchbuilt elements is called done. I would like to thank you /WIP/ for all suggestions and advice provided along the way. What do you think?
All he needs now is a name and proper photo session. Since somebody here called it "illegitimate child of Stormcrow and Timber Wolf" maybe Storm Wolf?
>>95854396It bothers me that I spent a lot of time brushing varnish on my minis when it looks so much better sprayed. It's also fa/tg/uys who told me about my mistake.
>>95854400To be honest, I would prefer to be able to apply varnish by brush instead. Spraycan is at disadvantage most the time - it require spraying outside while better part of the year have too low temperature and those that do have proper one, often have strong winds or raining. Plus, up close it appears slightly similar to some sort of carpace (in this case this effect is less prominent, AP varnish looks very grainy while being absurdly durable to compensate - you can run knife across cured layer and it won't even notice). Too bad that all my attempts at. Rush applying varnish ends up with one flaw or another (change in colouration, chalky effect, etc).
*brush varnish, I hate when I have to post from phone.
>>95854396very nice and i like your take on the cockpit glass
cant really tell any difference legs being blurry and all but on the other hand who can on a tabletop 50cm away or sitting in a cabinet
>>95854454Cockpit glass is actually made with thinned Vallejo fluorescent blue over their Metal Color Silver. I did something similar before and liked the effect so replicated it here.
these guys are "done." I regret using wolf grey over Fenrisian grey since the fatigues came out a bit too dark.
They're a bit rough but they're satisfactory for a small batch job. They're still missing decals and the freehand 122nd regiment number on the shoulders but it's fine. got bigger hobby fish to fry.
>>95854500also some orks I finished and varnished alongside them since I was getting the airbrush out and putting on the mask. I tend to pile up finished models then just varnish them all at once cause I hate wearing the mask and cleaning my airbrush for one model.
>>95853422Take the Fantasywelt pill
Guys, Rubicon Models hard plastic bases - anyone used them? Pros and cons?
>>95854523They have usually worse prices than TGD, Kutami, Miniaturicum and most others. Very wide selection of stuff for sure, but i rarely buy from them because of their higher prices.
How long should I keep this little (resin) guy in hot water if I want to set him straight?
How hot the water?
>>95853419You do understand GSW used to be hated here for their shenanigans not the price or quality of their products right?

>>95854687As hot as the hottest coffee you can drink, and dunk it for about 5 seconds if it's that thin
>>95854558Seems like a lot of marketing talk and things nobody ever asked for in a plastic base. Was basing material coming off a base ever an issue?
Was drilling into a base for pinning a miniature ever an issue? (considering you already had to drill into the mini in the first place)
That little rim might be neat, but it does not justify the x2 for their price compared to any generic "gw-style" base.
>ergonomicYeah right.

>>95854908the real reason is prob buying their colour shapers, the blue ones, do not get these cheap shitty rebranded junk
>>95854927The one that made them rename their paints to "Shifters" in certain countries.
>>95854891Sure, that maybe, but it wasn't a copyright dispute. It's like saying: "This famous person was convicted of rape", and when someone corrects you that they were actually convicted of drug possession you respond: "who cares, they are convicted felon anyway lol". Terminology matters, especially since GSW is very litigious when it comes to copyright stuff as well, so when you use the term improperly you are misinforming people.
>>95854951Dont make things bigger than it was. All the posts above were very clear that its about the name "coliorshift" and the right to use it to name such paints.
>>95854951More like saying
>This famous person was convicted of dealing methand it was cocain in reality and then saying
>who cares, they are a drug dealer anyway lol
>>95851964Plenty. Brown base, ap emperors gold, vallejo gold + brown ink + gsw gold pigments, dark brown oil, vallejo gold+ gsw gold in that order. The gsw pigments give it an insane shine that is hard to capture in pics, the overall colour too. It looks quite close to actual, worn metal irl.

>>95855035Check out Fantasy-In, they also ship for free above 49โฌ. It depends on the products, but i find their prices quite competitive. (they, and Fantasywelt, used to do that for orders above 29โฌ.. but that was some time ago sadly)
>>95855063>>95855087we had this the other day. cutting mdf is super simple if they have the machine for it, and transporting quite heavy mdf material from asia to europe is quite expensive, so it makes totally sense for them to produce everything mdf at home.

>>95854718>>95854558Surprised they don't have magnets slots on the bottom, given their popularity for storage.
>>95854927>>95854946This seems like a fun concept, are they actually any good?
>>95855392>are they actually any good? They work, but its very hard to show on a picture, thats why you rarely see those paints.
Also you should apply a basecoat of gloss black underneath if i remember it right.
(in part) due to popular demand, I am redoing the more complex shield design.
>>95855512I see. On a small search, they might be interesting to use for an army that's mostly in metallic palettes. Maybe some magic effects but using regular colors probably still works best for those.
>>95855649I can see them on insect or dragon-like minis too.
>>95854928I really like that simple color scheme anon. I'd make them really dusty with concrete on their bottoms too
>>95854929>walking through the fields>the wheat starts speaking gobbo
>>95854929Aww man I've got fond memories of my gw store having a field of wheat made out of a welcome mat and seeing my ork warboss run through it.
First time working with resin. I'm painting in subassemblies. Do I need to care about getting paint in the connection points like when using plastic? I don't want to have trouble when using super glue to connect.
>>95850487I think these turned out really good. There is a certain something missing from them, but I think the execution of that wash and the tones are lovely. I don't think you have to add contrast, this is a style unto itself where kinda everything blends in together, but that might make it seem harder to differentiate them on the battlefield.
>>95855816Super glue bonds to paint just fine, the only issue is that a bond is only as strong as its weakest link, which in this case will be the paint-to-resin bond.
>>95854987>craftspergTake your schizophrenia meds, this is obviously two anons. Target subject is different, typing style is different, posting times are different.
>>95855964Yes, who just woke up dumbass.
I like GSW, only one product I have ever had any issue with from them was the runic rolling pin which had a bunch of hebrew fish all over it that I had to scrape off.
Otherwise GSW sells a lot of interesting unique stuff that is occasionally worth picking up to throw in the toolbox, like those leaf shaped hole punches, I want one.
>>95855392I think the effect is really cool, it would work great for game pieces that will actually be observed from a lot of different angles.
>>95855512I think they also recommend applying them with an airbrush because any imperfections will be much more visible.
>>95855392>This seems like a fun concept, are they actually any good?Sure in context appropriate uses, like doing bug shells.
But just like in IRL when street racers do it to their cars the result is typically garish and untasteful.
Key words here
>context appropriate, typicallyYes there are niches, but just like when someone gets contrast paints it inevitably becomes the primary paint choice for every project when someone buys them, it goes everywhere on everything, it is very hard for the majority to resist the pull of "Ooh! New shiny thing!"
>>95856066Pretty sure this effect stuff looks great in person when you can hold the mini and move it around, but even on such a picture where you see both colours, it kinda feels lame, because all the "in between" is missing.
Necrons might be the perfect minis for that stuff.
Really struggling on what to do with the mushroom stalks. Anyone has an idea what colours I should use on them?
>>95856128Yeah I wanted to make a video initially but I couldn't get it to a small enough size. Just wanted to show the actual colors. It really does look cool in person but like other anons said, if you had an entire army painted with them I think it would get old pretty fast. I remember one anon here using it for a single panel of his knight and that worked out really well imho.
>>95856153Damn anon this is starting to look really fucking good now that it's all coming together. I think the stalks are fine as they are but when in doubt just look for reference in nature. You could try imitating more texture with some small dots maybe?
>>95856153Purple to contrast with the green skin and orange caps, a dark ivory to more blend in and let the skin and caps be the stars, maybe a reddish brown to compliment the orange without being as background as the dark ivory. Could go blueish white for max contrast with the caps and echo the blue green skin. Depends on how "visible" you want them to end up in the model.
>>95856162This discussion reminds me of a purple metallic paint I bought many years ago.
Every project I started for at least a year I stopped and considered if I could find a use for that paint, eventually I realized that it will never be right to use it for trim or weapons or mechanical joints, it's got to be used for armor panels, but that would have to be done for a force that is thematically right for a purple, and itself should be part of a collection where I have a larger amount of silver/gold/bronze done on armor panels so that it would fit in without sticking out in a bad way.
So I've never ended up using that paint.

What can I use as NOT wet pallete? Should I buy Citadel Servo-Skull Palette or is it a meme?
>>95856303>What can I use as NOT wet palleteweird question to ask because the obvious answer is anything

>>95856303I use bottlecaps
>>95856303>Citadel Servo-Skull PaletteI was not aware of this thing existing. It does not look very practical to be honest. Art stores usually sell palettes. You can also do the Duncan thing and use a bathroom tile or a piece of polished glass.
>>95856353>bathroom tile or a piece of polished glass.Do you guys just have this lying around at your place?
>>95856303I got 2 aluminium palette from amazon for like 6 eur.

do you know that feeling when you have great motivation to paint or do hobby stuff and order all that gear you had worked out in your mind
then local postal service decides that your package will arrive in 2 weeks instead of the promised max 2 days and you already lost the mojo
>>95856162>if you had an entire army painted with them I think it would get old pretty fastI think it would be funny to do something like Alpha Legion since it would be in character, but realistically on a lower commitment project like a full Kill Team or a specialized squad in 30k. And from the looks of Vallejo's videos, they show off a few Necrons with the stuff, the one on the right is using it primarily for toning.
>>95856406You can get a tile or two from the hardware store for pretty cheap.
>>95856703It looks like these both have a layer of colorshift with a normal silver drybrushed on top of it, the one on the right just has a lighter shade of colorshift than the other.
>>95856303>>95856414pretty much this. either aluminum or plastic palettes from amazon. they come in really cheap sets of 2-5 pieces and you basically can use them forever.
>>95856722In the video, the painter goes with a silver basecoat on top of gloss black primer, but then delicately uses an airbrush for the colorshift tones before using multiple washes and highlights. Probably making Necrons more complicated than they need to be. The one on the left doesn't get covered, I would assume he used the same method on a more vivid paint but it's a lot more glossy.
>>95856829I was watching a different video where the same paint needed three airbrush coats before it showed well, so that silver is still showing a lot here.

The only advice I can give is throw it out and buy a resin printer like you should have done before ever thinking about printing miniatures.
>>95857402I didn't print it. A friend did and gave it to me to paint for him. Im well aware that fdm is not good for miniatures, but that's for your wonderful observation.
>>95857316You could probably use the printlines for your advantage by painting it as a rough, primeval statue.
>>95856303>What can I use as NOT wet pallete?I use a paper palette all the time. When the page gets all gooped up, peel it off, throw it away, and use the next page.

I've been trying to find someone making replacement decals, but Etsy broke their search again if you're using adblockers and I'm not seeing them anywhere else.
You can make your own decals fairly cheaply with a printer.. as long as it prints in white. Or you're willing to paint a white circle on the model where the skull goes. There's versions of the decal paper available for both laser and inkjet, and I've done them up in the library before.
Not a whole lot of progress because I've been really busy this week but I did manage to do some shading and edge highlights
Howโs glaze medium? Any brand.
Is it just mix 50/50 paint and medium and then one can start painting with a more transparent paint?
I want to paint gun barrels that have seen extensive use and not quite feeling like using thinned speed paints for the job of easy glazing.
>>95855252What has nestle or AliExpress done? Or gas?
More or less finished a hammerhead for the Yo'vai sept. Detailing is pretty light, first time trying splinter camo with tape and an airbrush, then just oil in the panel lines and some silver. I would spend longer on them but cba
>>95858618I use liquitex and its fine, you don't even need 50/50 just a drop or so is plenty. Do note that while it makes for very easy glazing and wet blending it can cause some paints to dry shinier than usual. A non-issue if you're planning on varnishing but worth noting.

>>95858854Is that really all it takes to oil wash stuff? Goddamn, thanks anon!
>>95859310NTA, but it's oil wash (or oil paints) + white spirit which you will need to clean up the excess paint and/or mix your own washes from the paint. And also clean your brushes afterwards. But yeah, it's pretty simple. Oil washes are thousand times better than acrylic ones, imo.
t. oil baron
>>95859331>>95859310also not either of these anons but be aware at how bad white spirits will smell, if you for example oil wash a huge terrain piece or something make sure you're not breathing that in too much. I've had some killer headaches from that.
>>95859377I'm none of these anons, spend the extra couple bucks and get either gamblin or mona lisa brands of odorless mineral spirits. Gamblin has almost no odor, mona lisa has a slight odor but not any more than the oil paints themselves. Still need good air flow and ventilation so you don't get a headache but they are a big improvement over regular white spirits.
>>95859396Odorless does not mean you are not breathing the stuff in. The good ol' smelly one is better, because it tells you clearly when you need more ventilation.
Any advice or videos to watch on how to work colors into nmm steel while having it still read as steel? >>95859621i didn't flip that picture. huh.
>>95859621You did well anon! I particularly like the way you did the skin tones because I struggle with painting fair skin flesh with fair skin colored acrylic paint.
>>95859621Fuckin neat. The eyes look good, I wouldn't repaint them. You can try adding a red glaze on the lower eyelid area to help them stand out more. Also if you can manage it, a white dot covering a bit of the pupil helps break the "black dot" eye look.
Also, be sure to paint the nipples in detail.
I have made a wet palette out of a sponge, sandwich box and baking paper. Almost like the Vallejo wet palette tutorial.
Is there such a thing as too much water even if the thin car cleaning sponge I bought isnโt submerged under water?
And is a sponge better than wet paper towels being used to hold water that will travel up and moisturize the baking paper?
>t. Moving up from the plate I used as a palette.
>>95859396Yeah if you're indoors get odorless
>>95859653it's base coat + highlight + oil wash. The oil wash does all of the work, better transitions than I could ever dream of.
>>95859697Yeah, I'll try the red glaze, will probably add some depth to it. It all feels a bit flat, probably because the model only has eyesockets no modeled eyelids. As for the nipples..... well....

I got into model painting a few months ago. I decided to get the Warcrow starter box because it looks cool and my friend plays. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone else finds it easier to paint some models disassembled and then glue them together and touch up whatever paint you fucked up? Also how big of a deal goes the color of the primer matter in the end? I've been using grey with white as a zenithal highlight sometimes.
>>95861040Painting models on the sprue is a meme. Anyone who tells you they do that is trolling or a sadomasochist. As for painting disassembled. I haven't yet but there has been a few models I kinda wish I did the head or arms separate. Especially some arms with shields. But a great rule to follow is don't worry about painting a part that isn't gonna be seen much if at all.
>>95861181I've had pretty good luck building the torsoes and legs and maybe the head and then doing the arms/wings/whatever separate and then glueing them on. I find it easier to get to what would other wise be extremely hard that will still be seen when fully built. I've seen those trays with sticks use for priming and I wonder if it's a worth while investment if I'm going to keep painting them half assembled.
>>95859428>Odorless does not mean you are not breathing the stuff inExcept it (kinda) does mean exactly that
Odorless white spirits are much finer refined resulting in a) having a much higher boiling point compared to less refined smelly ones (e.g gamblin odorless spirits have a boiling point of around 190C, other "low odor" spirits have a boiling point of around 150C, even less refined spirits are even lower) - which means that they evaporate slower and in a given moment in time thereโs gonna be less odorless white spirits vapors in the room compared to non-odorless so youโre literally breathing them in less and b) the higher degree of refinement (and the "odorless" part) means that all the smelly volatile aromatic compounds have been distilled off - and those aromatic volatile compounds (such as benzene and toluene) are much more toxic than all the other hydrocarbons in white spirits so with odorless not only youre breathing in less white spirits vapors, what youโre breathing in is also less toxic and headache-inducing
So no, using smelly white spirits over odorless is a pretty retarded idea all in all
And to be clear Iโm not saying that you shouldnโt ventilate while using odorless spirits

>>95862851>temu and AliExpress are dirt cheap and not that bad for the priceThe main thing to consider is that for most items, all other options will be made in china anyway. Neither Amazon or GSW, nor Army Painter or any other hobby brand make their cutting mats themselves.. They all buy them either in china or from a company that imports stuff in bulk, and then re-sell them.
