We're so fucking back, 3-0 off good old UW fliers. Also some artifact synergy, but honestly it didn't matter much this run. Lots of removal too. Quistis is no snapcaster, but still solid enough. She can also notably steal from your opponent's gy, which was very relevant. Ashe is awful and I wouldn't have ran her without all the artifacts and being short on creatures. I think I was short in a few previous runs too, though I think that's more due to poor luck than the format. Ice magic continues to be top tier, great in both shorter and longer games. One opponent had an interesting BR suicide aggro deck with greatswords along some other job select equipment, a bunch of the mage tokens, and self destruct to close out games. In contrast, most of the other decks with B seem to be relatively slow and grindy, even BR ones.

Got work to do so I probably won't be playing much for the rest of the week, good luck in your runs, bros.

Hard to really say with only a day and a half of experience. One thing that stands out though is that there's a ton of different rares, and many don't synergize much with the rest of the set. Like there's a bunch that care about lifegain, while only a handful of commons and uncommons actually facilitate that. A decent chunk of the uncommons are stronger, the signposts this set are really pushed. Format seems relatively slow, didn't see a lot of aggro. Multicolor piles seem actually viable, the town synergy cards are pretty solid and you get more chances to find strong cards to splash for because of how good uncommons are.

Save gold and wildcards for when you’re really sure you wanna build a real deck. They are hard to get.

Play all the tutorials and whatever other shit they want you to do.

You can play starter deck duel as many times as you want to get daily wins or do daily quests you don’t have to play your starter deck against real decks.

Uhh that’s all to get started. The important part is not rushing into using your resources unless you want to spend a lot of money.

Just play the newbie challenges and stick with starter deck queue at the start. Once you're more familiar with the game, you can look to branch out. Ideally make a meta deck first, the grind is going to be a lot worse if you're struggling to even win. As anon said, gold and gems are slow to acquire if you're new and can't reliably win events, so save up and be really sure it's worth spending.

It's working even better than it did initially. All games played on standard Mythic in B01, as I've not even looked into sideboard. For some reason I'm beating Jeskai Cutter decks. Eatherspark went, it's just too expensive to cast. I need more one drop white or colourless cards for effective mana use. Mana base is in alpha state and untouched from before. Cloud is just Cutter draw card. But, it's very effective at that.

btw, I forgot to mention. This is primarily a FUN deck. It's not a super supped up version, yet, and may never be. So don't go spending your wilcards on it, thinking it'll be an easy ride to top ranks. It does share cards with proper Jeskai prowess deck, and they can be used there. I'd still advise going with that instead.
I had plenty of fun running it, now I'll go back at doing my report on draw rigging. It should be up tomorrow, even though I'm baking apfelstrudel as well...

Honestly there is a lot you could do. You want to be running Tyvar to combo off with roots. Murder is bad. Most lists don't run spot removal but if you really want to, replace it with Go for the Throat or Cut Down. Your manabase could also use some work. Rare lands are important.

Do people actually care about packs in this game? It's not like real life or hearthstone where there are potential high rolls, every pack is just 1/6th of a wildcard and sometimes you get a wildcard or a card you'd have eventually spent a wildcard on. If you play enough you end up with every rare from the set anyway.

My Zidane showed up in 3 games and each time won me something I was about to lose, or at least was about to stalemate.
The most dramatic was a dude removing pretty much my entire board and stabilizing from 4 up to 9 with Ardyn. Only for me to topdeck Zidane and steal Ardyn before throwing Demon Giott at his face.
But yeah, most of my wins were fliers or Seifer doing Seifer things. Funny Dragoon or Gaelicat doublestriking every turn is usually enough it feels like.

Some of you probably remember this post from a few generals ago. Well, I've done my own version of it. 100 games, note-taking along the way, and I tried to be as fair as possible. It started as a personal project, then I started to be more organised, and I guess that I'll do a few more at later time as well.

Goal: Play 50 games in various formats. Use the same deck across all games. Take notes. Be mindful of own and opponents land drop, and card draw.


Deck used picrelated:


A fairly basic Standard legal Red/Blue Cori-Cutter deck that requires a bit of luck to work. Especially since land base is very simple. Cori-Cutter is main threat. It requires two spells to be cast in a row, so everything is cheap. Slickshot and Rage are secondary threats. Slickshot can help activating Cor-Cutter and Reverb in mana shortage if cast from being plotted. Drake Hatcher comes in hand against mirror matches with 2-damage removal, and can cause problems if she manages to attack pumped up. I also like running Reverberating Summons. It enters activated if it lands as 2nd spell in turn. For example, Slickshot cast, then Reverb is immediate 6 damage attack. Where Cori-Cutter then Slickshot is 3 damage. Does nothing on defence, but is immune to Authority of the Consuls, and even larger number of wipes as Cori-Cutter.
Deck does very well vs. standard board wipes. Bad against Lock-up. High Noon is hard counters that has practically no answers. Black discard decks are unfavourable matchup. Red/White Mice is unfavourable. Against other Jeskai Cutter decks and against mono Red Mice it is about equal. Mono red goblins are unfavourable matchup as well. Oculus, Overloards, and Synthesizer are too slow for it, and are a good matchup. Lifelink decks are a problem if they manage to get to late game.

Pay to win?:
All games were played on account that never spent a single dime in in game store. I did enter one promo code that came with Prerelease Pack.

48 ranked games Best of One Pioneer (plan was 50 games, I screwed up game numbering and ended at 48)
50 ranked games Best of One Standard (I played extra games at the end as I tried to get to Mythic with this deck)

Game progression:
All games were played at the end of Tarkir Dragonstorm cycle, and before Final Fantasy dropped.
I dropped my rating from Tier 3 in Diamond to the bottom, and started at zero of Tier 4 in Diamond. I played 50 games of Pioneer. Pioneer run ended at bottom of Diamond 3 tier. Standard start was excelent, by game 29 I was in Diamond Tier 1. Then a major crisis happened with bad draw, and a row of games where opponents started the game, and I was back at the bottom of Diamond Tier 2 by game 38. Fifty game run of Standard, ended with me at the middle of Diamond Tier 2. I did not record all games, but I did manage to enter Mythic with this deck just at the end of season. All in all, I must have played around a total of 120-130 games of Bo1 as I entered Mythic.

Evaluation:

Pioneer: games were extremely even regarding mana base. So even that I’m assuming that there was equalising method employed. Even if one player started the game with advantage, the other cought up to him quickly. Or when one struggled, the other struggled as well. Only towards the end of Pioneer run, I started to encounters draw problems that caused me to loose games simply because of land draw. My and opponents Mulligans were also very rare. Even in games that I lost, I usually had no mana problems. My dual lands were constantly in starting hand or I drew them soon. I don’t know if dropping rating caused such eaven start, and lack of ‘rigging’, I’d even say that it was rigged for even play.

Evaluation:

Standard: A very different experience. Even thought I was playing the same deck, game progressions felt different. Draw of cards was also different. I’d get one colour flood, and a deck of other colour cards, and the amount of mana screw after initial draw was also much higher. A lot of games were simply won or lost by card draw. There were also cases that were highly beneficial to me. At one point I mulliganed, drew two lands, then threw one land away by mistake. I started on draw, dropped that land. The next turn, I drew a dual land, the next turn I drew another dual land (I have 5 dual lands in deck). All in all, I won more games, but my experience was far worse. A lot of my losses were hopless encountered, and fealt like game forced them on me, likewise my wins against opponents that had no chance were hollow as well.

Statistics:

Started game vs opponent started game. (slightly unreliable, i’ve forgotten to notice this at times)
Pioneer: = 19/22
Standard: = 19/27

Wins vs opponent
Pioneer: = 27/21
Standard: = 31/19

Unplayable and large mana screw. (This is very subjective, since I’ve no way of seeing opponents hands)
In my favour/in opponents favour:
Pioneer: = 4/7 (like I noticed in evaluation, land draw was distributed much more favourably for both me and opponents)
Standard: = 6/15 (very high number of games with unplayable hands)

Conclusions and future tests:
Very uneven experience, but it’s hard to say if it’s from playing different formats, or from me being higher ranked at start of my standard run. Some games, and some opponents are extremely off. The number of outright unplayable games is also very high. One thing is certain, both runs had some trully weird moments, both in my favour and in opponents. It feels like luck was more often against me, but that’s subjective. It is true that statistically I was more often on the draw, compared to starting a game, and with this deck, starting is a large advantage. Seven game streak on the draw at the end of Standard as I cracked Tier 1 for the first time, was especially weird. I practically had no play during that streak. My land draw was bad, and I was playing against opponents with perfect hands. Another thing, my deck has a hard counter card High Noon. I’ve two bounce backs and one counterspell against it. I’ve not encountered a single case where it was on board during all that 100 run. Only on game 108, I first saw it. I did encounter a few Authority of Consuls decks that usually run High Noon as well, I beat those faily easily thanks to my counter to Authority, so it’s possible that matchmaking algorithm determined that my deck was good against those decks and stopped giving them to me.

I’ll probably do 50 run apeace in best of three formats as well. Then I’ll see and probably drop a bit of cash and see if things change with money on board.

After playing a bit with the new FF set it feels like WotC's probably gonna rape the newbies since a lot of the cards don't seem that great for standard currently, but the cards are also fun as shit and it makes me wish I had some local neckbeards to play retarded weak theme decks with. Champion of Dusan, Qarsi Revenant, snakeskin veil along with this thing. If you combine it with Qarsi revenant, it turns into a 7/7 flying deathouch and then you snakeskin when they try to remove it and it gets even stronger.
Tried several iterations of the deck and finally got it to work once, but I lost anyway because the other guy kept spamming removal.
It also has the benefit of coming back - someone gets rid of it and you can cast it again. But it's just way too slow. The game is decided on turn 3 or 4 and this guy comes down on turn 4 and then you have to pump him up afterwards. Just doesn't work.

Just remember it's a colorless land for all your noncreatures, so it won't be able to help cast thoughtseize and the like. But there's enough of these lands that you could run any 5c tribal deck you want, as long as you're not casting anything else.

Oh and in case anybody didn’t know they changed the way crafting cards works. Now you can craft any reprint with the lowest rarity wildcard it was ever printed. I got the sweet mythic secluded courtyard x4 for one uncommon. It kind of sucks because some special guests were easier to craft at mythic instead of rare but oh well.

It generally puts you ahead overall if you max it out, if you translate the gold, draft tokens and packs into value. The packs are really just wild card fuel.
The problem is that it splits that value into limited (draft token) and constructed (wild card value), so it isn't ideal for either.
For people that put the value on cosmetics at non-zero (not me), it's probably a better value proposition.
