Is Marienburg the most interesting city in all of Warhammer?
>inspired by Amsterdam/Venice
>lots of detail, the books have prices for everything, encounter tables that vary according to area and time of day, detailed rules on taxes (there are a lot of taxes), how to invest your money in the stock market, even rules for going through a criminal trial, they even explain what the exchange rate is for converting your Imperial coins (Crowns) to Marienburg coins (Guilders),
>every ethnicity/race is represented in it which adds a lot of variety- Warhammer equivalent of Norwegians, Arabs, Chinese, Japanese, French, Italians (there are two separate italian neighborhoods which hate each other) the Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits also have their own neighborhoods, even goblins are allowed to live here
>multiple police forces which hate each other (river police and street police, also witch hunters)
>tons of trade unions involved in shady businesses
>everyone is constantly trying to scam you
>lots of poverty, prostitution, criminal organizations and drug/sex trafficking
>secret cults
>serial killer on the loose
>the city has a parliament but is governed by a directorate, the directorate represents many influential and rich families, most of them with their own secrets and plots
>old nobility is still around trying to scheme their way back to power
>the city is built on top of an older human settlement and the ruins are accessible through the sewers and used by smugglers
>the older human settlement was built on top of a much older Elven settlement which in theory is also accessible, good options to go cave delving and exploring
no other city in all of wahammer has this much detail and effort put into it and yet its completely overlooked. there are very few published scenarios that take place in marienburg (including a pretty funny one where the characters get involved in a pump and dump scam in the stock market), no novels, and no one plays as Marienburgers in the tabletop.
>>95852343 (OP)Care to show your marienburg army?
>>95852343 (OP)Altdorf and Middenheim are both much more intrested in a Big Bogenhafen-esque.
One can always play in that sandbox sure, but meh, it never looked so grand to me, just a nest of scamming, swindling merchants and the usual filth that brings with it
>>95852343 (OP)Yeah Marienburg and Norland were more interesting to be. Stirland to some extent too.
Idk though I just don't seem 100% convinced by Oldhammer nostalgia more generally, it always ends up running interference for the worst model for business as an enrhusiastic customer there is. Or maybe I'm forever cursed to get in as things are about to tip over. I was really happy with 4th and 5th and 6th editions. How many editions does a game need before it's good? I didn't really like 40k after 2nd
>>95852685OP's clearly talking about the RPG you braindead faggot
>>95854046Well in that case his campaign notes.
>>95852343 (OP)But yet they don't sell burgers?
>>95854705>thread about an actual game, warhammer fantasy RPG>about a city detailed in an RPG bookyou're losing your touch. /tg/ is about tradtional games, not specifically about the games you are personally currently running.
Even if I never play FATAL, that game is still an RPG and can be discussed here in any way we want, all perfectly within the rules.
Also, go be a wannabe janny somwhere else.
>>95852343 (OP)What books detail marienburg?
>>95854919dutch is just pig german thoughever
>>95854993You did all that effort not to realise I was talking about the map in the OP.
>>95854993BTW, Guilder is an actual Dutch word for coins, although those have already been out of circulation for 25 years.
>>95855024I already had that image saved from somewhere.
GW has always gone back and forth over using English vs non-English terminology. Even to the extent of changing Middenheim's Fauschlag to be Ulricsberg to be more... I don't know, accessible or something.
'Rijk' is a dutchification of Reik, the river. Although the river name might have been chosen for its resemblance to 'Reich'.
(Rijker's Isle is a Riker's Isle joke)
>>95854919Literally every human faction in WHF is just brits larping as some other country. Except Albion, who are just brits inshtmg their natural state.
>>95852343 (OP)They made some pretty fun attempts to improve Altdorf, but yeah. And I'm not just saying that because I am Dutch.
Marienburg is nice but I've always preferred running things in Averland. It's the better Generic Fantasy Land of the setting; Greenskin hordes, knights, rustic landscape, vampires on the border. It's great.
>>95854705god you're such a pathetic mouth breathing neckbeard faggot
>>95855040The Dutch word is Gulden though, not Guilder
>>95857435Mamma Mia I'm retarded
Specifically in relation to:
> (there are two separate italian neighborhoods which hate each other)
>>95852343 (OP)>Rijker's IsleI love Warhammer. I love how half of everything they originally did was just a bit/reference. Nobody should ever take it seriously because the creators didn't.
>>95852343 (OP)Pigbarter clears any other fictional city
>>95857435there are actually THREE italian neighborhoods
Luigis town
North Miragliano
Remas Way
(Miraglianese and Remans hate each other)
there's also a Spaniard neighborhood (knife alley) and a russian one
>>95857626Pigbarter and Marienburg are two interesting parts in what is otherwise an aggressively uninteresting, boring, and limited setting. To me Warhammer ties with Star Wars in how limited the scope and shallow the worldbuilding are.
So you're telling me you're standard city in AOS is more interesting that every other city in Warhammer?
>>95860374Hate to say it but from how op sold it, thatโs the case.
>>95858218boy Knife Alley sounds like a swell fuckin' place
>>95860374The typical cope answer is "nooo, you need generic shitty mudcore cities to contrast the cool ones!" which could be true, except the generic shitty mudcore cities are 98% of the setting
>>95852343 (OP)Retard, here.
I like your thread OP - what book did thus come from? I'm assuming WFRP?
I've been wanting to run an urban campaign for ages and this thread may have given me the last motivation I needed.
>>95862540not OP but most of this lore comes from a single WFRP first edition book called Marienburg Sold Down the River.
Cuibicle 7 are doing another Marianburg book for the 4th edition, even got the original writer to come back for it
>>95862572Sick! Good looking out, anon.
Going to give this and the Middenheim a read.
>>95862540There is also extra info spread out over various White Dwarf articles
>>95862540Not specifically Marienburg but pretty much all Empire big cities are interesting. I'm using the 2e Nuln book for my urban campaign and the engineering guilds acting like greedy retards, the ancient sewer system/catacombs hiding a literal underground market full of mutants and the skaven hiding everywhere will be enough content for a while.
>>95863536Reading through some of these and I'm already kicking myself for not having used these cities as a setting at my table. It's so hard to find cities that actually feel worth adventuring in these days.
>>95862572I hadn't heard that, that might actually make me want to play 4e again.
>>95862572Adding to this, some recent WFRP 4e books have extra info about Marienburg.
Patrons of the Old World I provides some extra details about the Kuypers big family secret and Deft Step Light Fingers provides some extra info about Grossbart, a mobster from Potion Square in Suiddock (Potion Square is detailed in some White Dwarf articles but you can find all the relevant info just googling around)
I hope the new book concentrates all this info, having to switch between so many different pdfs looking for very specific bits of info is cumbersome
There's a really awesome WFRP adventure that takes place in Marienburg. But I forgot what it's called.
A mysterious painting has emerged in the black painting and various factions are fighting over it- its supposed to be worth 500(!) Guilders (you can buy a galleon with that iirc) why is everyone so interested in the painting? Why is it so special? No one knows!
SPOILER it's a nude portrait of Emmanuelle from Nuln. One of her lovers painted her nude and after they broke up he fled with the painting and is trying to sell it. Emmanuelle is behind the 500 guilders bounty because she doesn't want her nudes distributed. Lel.
>>95866288Black market I mean. Fucking autocorrect
BTW theres an illustration in the adventure showing the painting in all its glory.
>>95866299I think the illustration is found only on the artist patreon these days as I've only ever found the censored version
nta the adventure your talking bout but another one that starts in Marianburg called The Dying of the Light is also great
>>95854705>redditor vibes>wannabe jannykys maybe?
>>95854919I'd wager "rijk's gate" is meant to be dutch-y
>>95866406Kek, fucking Andy Law, you can't turn a stone in WFRP and not find this retard's name.
>>95852343 (OP)>>95852695>>95855887>MUH MARIONBURG>MUH ALTDORF>MUH MIDHEIM>MUH AVERAGELANDPraag literally has living walls in the city fuck outta here
>>95868159Yeah, it's annoying he still needs to be involved in WFRP even though he quit C7 in a big huff and founded his own company
>>95866245>I hope the new book concentrates all this info, having to switch between so many different pdfs looking for very specific bits of info is cumbersomeThis is the entire line's problem. 4e desperately needs a revised core book.
>>95862101I genuinely tried to find any setting in AOS industry and found it all incredibly boring. Magic to the point of mundanity.
It's less that 'brown sloppa = good' and more 'magic and fantastical shit needs grounded and realistic elements to contrast with'.
AOS feels like two degrees away from candyland for me, with chocolate rivers and candy cane forests.
>>95868159He's a literal pronouns in bio cuck too.
>>95870280There are more of the GW staff than just Andy Law that do that anon, a lot of their writers are exceptionally left-wing.
Remember when the End Times revealed Marienburg had been secretly run by vampires forever
Marienburg being owned by Brets at one point and the frogs still seething about it is a good piece of lore
>>95870267the map you posted is cooler than the whf map
>>95872882This unironically. You canโt expect me to take a copy pasted map of earth and then just tell me itโs somehow TWICE the size of earth.
>>95852343 (OP)Does Karak 8 peaks count as a single city?
>>95852343 (OP)Of the places we spent time during the short time I played it, that was my favorite.
>>95874106My GM was so fond of Dead Canal as a concept that he recreated in Five Fingers when we switched to Iron Kingdoms.
>>95872882Elaborate. I genuinely want to understand what you see in AOS maps.
>>95873499The size thing is indeed retarded, however:
>you can't just expect me to take a copy pasted map of earthAbout that...
>>95852343 (OP)Anon thanks to this thread I'm going to make a Marienberg warband for Mordheim.
I think I'll theme them after the Night Watch and other Dutch paintings.

Fuck it. I'm going to see if my table is down for a Marienburg game.
Read Sold Down the River and I'm hooked now.
>>95866288I'd love to find out which module this is. Sounds hilarious.
>>95886400The adventure from an old Warpstone(Fan WFRP magazine) issue, so your best bet is to try and find an archive of those issues.
>>95852343 (OP)I made a tavern crawl adventure module in Marienburg for that very reason.
>>95857579It's the only way to write.
>>95886447I was able to find Issues 4-19, 21-26, and 28-30. If you would kindly point me to Issues 1-3, 20, and 27, I'd be ever so grateful, anon.
>>95866406It's vastly different from 4E's flat Emmanuelle.
>>95870295Two of C7's current women writers are lesbians. Not with each other.
1E always wins.
>>95870267>Not a Place of HonorThis is cool as fuck though.
>>95852343 (OP)so basically all Middenheim has, only with water except rock?
>>95888433Middenheim is obsessed with the Warhammer version of Football, unlike Marianburg
>>95870295More or less the entirety of GW and C7 writers are and always have been leftist, with many being hard/far left and all of them wanting to politicize their work.
Remember that Warhammer's single biggest influence was Michael Moorcock, who said that all fiction should exist to forward a communist revolution, and if a story doesn't then it should be erased. This was the guy the beginning GW staff looked up to.
>>95890327So is one of the Tilean city states, now that you mention it.
I can't recall which one...the one that divides political parties based on color.
>>95890519YES! Verezzo.
Not as good as Marienburg, but still good.
>>95870454Don't get what? Its on the border of the empire and bretonnia so they naturally scuffle over it. The only reason they don't scuffle more is because it's closest to Couronne and they don't want Leoncour to be too much of a team killing asshole even if technically there's a earl under him who wants it to get to dukedom.
>>95904803It's like the rl low countries, they're too strategically and commercially valuable to leave in French hands, but no one wants to live in a fuckin swamp apart from Flemings and Walloons, so it doesn't get conquered by other Germans.
>>95905256The common lesson from the Low Countries and Venice is that motherfuckers crazy enough to steal land from the ocean have a promising future in mercantilism.
>>95866288Is there an anon who knows which adventure this person is talking about? I'm really interested, but I can't find it.
>>95905732I can't find it either and it's irritating me. Sounds like a fun one.

Generally the most artistic maps are Mad Alfred's (Alfred Nuรฑez Jr.) while the most detailed are by Andy Law (was actually dedicated to making a master map that the more artistic stuff was based on)

And that's before I told the High Elves what they were calling them.
>>95914713It'd be more like "Hallo Heer Dwerg!"
Herr is german, so you'd more likely be mistakenly cutting down a reiklander instead.
That's a slayer oath if I've ever seen one.

>>95890474I do not know if i am right but i feel that i am. The thing i get from Marx and his creation that is communist revolution is that in the end it is nothing more than banditry and theft under a new name. That has always seemed to be the end result of his works in practice is all i am saying.
Do you think those who support communist revolutions think the same way i do about there movement in secret? And that they want a world run by strong men and dictators. Or do they not see what i have seen in there movements and revolutions and just think everything will be sun shine and rainbows forever?
>>95916913Gonna cheekily share some more of this that I found.
>>95852343 (OP)Seems like a fun setting. I want to play as a young, lower noble who is just trying to get as many scars in duels as possible before he inevitably dies but who still has to support his poor noble house along the way somehow.
>>95915501every form of political organization is banditry under a new name. the only thing that really matters is how equitable the theft is. marx was just trying to get rid of the law of the jungle thats present in every other system and maybe its ultimately impossible but its certainly not ignoble to try
>>95866406>The Fallen CountessViz ze big boobies, of course
(Which ties back in to an earlier anon's point that EVERYTHING in Warhammer is either a reference or a pun. British gaming culture in general is positively addicted to them)
This whole thread is making me want to import Michael Caine as a elector count bordering the wasteland: "There are only two things I hate, humans intolerant of other humans, and the Marienbergers."
>>95890474Most of the Moorcock cribbing came from Ansell who was definitely not a communist. There was certainly a very strong anti-Thatcherite throughline in early GW but that's a far cry from the modern middle-class social virtue signalling and came from many staff coming from a genuinely working-class background which I don't imagine is true with current crop.
>>95924899I dunno, GW employees have always given off the vibe they were educated at a comprehensive to me.
>>95928781Founding GW employees maybe
>>95924899Bryan Ansell went to a private school that looked like this, there was nothing working class about him
>>95924899>>95929254This. The whole tough guy mullet punk look was just a front, dude was a privileged rich kid. All of them were. Which, coincidentally, is a demographic where communism is extremely popular, far more so than with working class people.
>>95934837Rich kids really turn to communism like it'll absolve them of noblesse oblige.
