When I read my Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader book (PDF because I'm poor) I was always under the impression that the satirical nature was more like a checklist of shit mankind has to face for fascism to be necessary and/or inevitable with all its dangers as people would give up their freedom for security and to hopefully be safer (not safe) after getting a taste of the grim darkness of the future.

No one disagrees the Imperium is extremely authoritarian/oppressive. The disagreement is about the intent of the 40k creators being to ridicule that aspect of the Imperium. If that was the intent, then:
1) the setting wouldn't be such that the Imperium and humanity as a whole would be extinct in a matter of decades if it stopped being extremely authoritarian/oppresive

I genuinely feel like people are missing the point about how the Imperium is causing a lot of their own issues. While it's vidya, the latest Rogue Trader RPG struct a good balance between showing that the galaxy is indeed horribly dangerous but also that the Imperium does invite a lot of danger themselves via their own obsession with hierarchy, lack of care for its subjects and tendency to get side tracked by opening up new war fronts. The four examples I particularly liked were all cases of cults becoming the issue due to the Imperium's own failings.

There is a controversy about WH40k Going Woke but the unfortunate truth is that WH40k always was. The writers built The Imperium of Man to mock us rightchads but as is typical with liberal attempts to mock their superiors, their feelings of inferiority (the root cause of all leftist thought) meant that they couldn't help but aknowledge our self-evident superiority over them. The Imperium of Man is the sole government responsible for human existence, controls the whole galaxy and exists in a world where liberalism causes demons to claw into reality and (sometimes literally) rape everything they get ahold of.

However, the generation that created the setting is gone and the shitlibs that came after and inflitrated their way in did not get the history of it being a Woke setting passed onto them.
