Today marks 225 years since the Battle of Marengo, the dramatic conclusion to Napoleon's brilliant Italian campaign of 1800.

In early 1800 the French army in Italy was poorly organised and demoralised. The Austrians under the command of General Michael von Melas had significant success, reversing Napoleon's hard-won gains of 1796-1797 and pushing the French back to Genoa. Without further intervention the beleaguered French faced total defeat in Italy. From March, Napoleon, now the French head-of-state as First Consul, rapidly assembled an army. The plan was a daring one, to strike across the Alps at the moment the passes became even somewhat traversable. The French crossed in May, rapidly swinging behind the Austrians and severing Melas' lines of communication.

By June 13, Napoleon was in the vicinity of Alessandria, which was then occupied by 30,000 Austrians. Disinformation from an Austrian spy and uncertainty as to Melas's true position and intent lead Napoleon to disperse his forces dangerously widely. Rather than retreat, and to the North as expected, Melas intended to strike east from Alessandria. across the Bomida, with the centre striking for the bridge across the Fontanone stream at Marengo, which was only lightly defended by Claude-Victor Perrin's modest corps of Gardanne and Chambarlhac's divisions. The soldiers of Lannes and Murat were behind Victor, and Monnier and the Consular Guard were at Bonaparte's headquarters, some five kilometres behind Marengo. Desaix with Boudet's division had been sent toward Novi.

At about 6am on 14 June 1800, the Austrian army began to slowly emerge from its bridgehead on the east bank of the Bormida river. Because it was such a cramped position, the Austrian deployment was time-consuming. As they deployed, elements of Melas's centre started attacking Gardanne's division, deployed ahead of the stream, from about 7 o'clock.

By 10am the French had deployed sufficiently to allow for Victor to order Gardanne to retreat back across the Fontanone. Chambarlhac's division was soon deployed to hold Marengo and Lannes with Watrin's division formed on its right flank. Around this time Napoleon realised that this was no diversionary attack and sent a frantic message to Desaix, recalling him and Boudet's division, and marched toward the battlefield. By 11 am Bonaparte was on the field and summoned up his last reserves. Jean-Charles Monnier's division and the Consular Guard were ordered to extend and shore up the French right, under pressure from Feldmarschall-Leutnant Ott's two divisions, rather than to try to hold Marengo.

While an Austrian attack on the French left at noon was unsuccessful, by this time Ott had started to turn the French right. At 2pm, with their men exhausted after beating back several major Austrian assaults and running dangerously short of ammunition short, Victor and Lannes finally abandoned Marengo and the line of Fontanone Creek. The French fell back slowly, and in relatively good order, harassed by cavalry and pounded by artillery. Monnier's division and the Consular Guard arrived and were committed to stop Ott's advance, but they were also forced to retreat. Meanwhile Desaix, apparently already en route, having marched to the sound of the guns, met Napoleon's staff officer on the road.

The French fell back some 3km and attempted to regroup to hold the village of San Giuliano. Outnumbered and driven from their best defensive position, the battle was as good as lost.

Melas, who was injured when his horse was shot out from under him, and 71 years old, handed over command of the persuit to his chief of staff, Anton von Zach, and Konrad Valentin von Kaim. Valuable time was wasted in reorganising the Austrian centre into a column. Meanwhile, the entire division of the Austrian left under O'Rielly became absorbed in pursuing and capturing a detachment of 300โ€“400 French soldiers at Cassina Bianca. This took his troops out of supporting distance from the Austrian main body. On the Austrian left, Ott hesitated to press hard against the French because Jean Rivaud's small brigade of French cavalry hovered to the north.

Meanwhile Desaix hastened his advance. Shortly before 5pm, he reported to Bonaparte in person with the news that his force (6,000 men and 9 guns of Boudet's division) was not far behind. The story goes that, asked by Bonaparte what he thought of the situation, Desaix replied: "This battle is completely lost. However, there is time to win another."

The French were fast to bring up and deploy the fresh troops in front of San Giuliano, and the Austrians were slow to mount their attack. The soon-famed 9รจme Lรฉgรจre, the 9th Light Infantry Regiment, were thrown forward to buy time screening Desaix's forces as they deployed, surprising the head of the Austrian column in the process. A French counterattack beat back the lead Austrian brigade. Zach brought forward a grenadier brigade in response and they resumed their attack. Faced with a crisis, Napoleon sent Desaix forward again and ordered a supporting cavalry charge requested by his general. French guns blasted the Austrians with grapeshot at close range. Further back, an Austrian ammunition limber exploded. In the temporary heightening of confusion, the Austrian grenadiers were charged on their left flank by French heavy cavalry and disintegrated. This precipitated a general collapse of the Austrian centre.

However, at the very moment of victory, Desaix was killed by a musket ball.

Napoleon reportedly mourned the loss of Desaix. Monuments were commissioned and erected in his honour, though it should be noted this magnanimity towards his saviour came at no political risk, a dead man can't usurp power.

The political ramifications of the French victory at Marengo were enormous. Melas convened a war council and signed the very unfavourable Convention of Alessandria the day after the battle. The victory consolidated Napoleon's political position in Paris as First Consul paved the way to his coronation as Emperor, and provided the political capital for him to reform France as he saw fit.

As far as playing Marengo the current issue (125) of Wargames Soldiers and Strategy magazine is themed around Napoleon's rise to power and has articles for a couple of options for playing this campaign. One is a series of three scenarios focussed on Victor's spirited defence of the Fontanone and Marengo against escalating attacks. The article provides stats for Black Powder but the author also recommends General de Brigade.

The other is a relatively common one, a map campaign covering the whole region from the point at which Napoleon marches over the Alps. The Italian campaign of 1800 has got a lot going for it for wargamers, particularly beginners, being geographically and temporally restrained and something great that can be achieved after simply painting a bunch of French and Austrians. Excellent for smaller miniatures scale wargamers. It really suits something umpire managed with a lot of fog of war.
For those living under a rock, Little Wars TV did a great episode on the campaign played out as a big club game with a relatively fast play system, Snappy Nappy.

https://www.littlewarstv.com/members-only/play-the-marengo-scenario?view=full

For gamers curious about board wargames, Triomphe ร  Marengo is a less conventional block wargame with some good thought behind it and sincere fans here and across the internet. It's certainly something I'll be looking into myself.

Today also marks the 250th birthday of the United States Army.

On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress decided to proceed with the establishment of a Continental Army for purposes of common defense, adopting the forces already in place outside Boston (22,000 troops) and New York (5,000). It also raised the first ten companies of Continental troops on a one-year enlistment, riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia to be used as light infantry, who became the 1st Continental Regiment in 1776. On June 15 the Congress elected George Washington as Commander-in-Chief by unanimous vote. He accepted and served throughout the war without any compensation except for reimbursement of expenses.

As a bonus the thread has died a few times now on the 14th of June.
Here's an archived thread with the original OP's treatment of Naseby:
https://archive.4plebs.org/tg/thread/47771646/
Rather than recycle that Naseby OP again I thought I'd write something different, and when I saw it was the Marengo anniversary also, well. Here's another one with shorter versions of Naseby and Marengo, which had I seen that earlier I might have got lazy and not done this OP.

I've been getting started on my Russia-Ukraine 2022 project. I found this $5 cars at the toy store. I think it's supposed to be a American MATV, but once repainted I think it passes as a Russian GAZ Tigr pretty well, especially to laymen. Even if it's slightly inaccurate, I still prefer spending $5 on a toy car than $40 on an accurate Tigr from Empress Miniatures

And speaking of Empress Miniatures, I bought this true scale BMP-2 from them and it makes me realize how retarded and out of scale Bolt Action tanks are. Look at this Empress BMP next to a Warlord Games T-34. Keep in mind the BMP and the T-34 are pretty much the exact same size IRL, both 22ft long

That's because BA vehicles are the classic 1/56 scale while that BMP2 is probably 1/48. Iirc 1/48 is much more accurate in comparison to 28mm dudes then 1/56 is, but 1/56 models are more prevalent and and extensive.

what's a good scale for joint naval/land operation games? I'm thinking American Civil War or maybe Colonials era. So for 1/600 (3mm) looks alright in terms of what's avaliable on the naval and land sides but I'd like some outside input since I'm mainly used to your standard 28mm stuff.

(Oh and a Humber armored car)

The actual course of the battle was fairly simple. Infantry and weapons teams moved on first, and the Italians quickly unlimbered and set up their guns, using their armored carriers to flank. The Italians covered one flank with one of their tanks and kept the other two on the road to face the British M3, which turned out to be a mistake as it was able to beat them both in a straight duel. The Italian Howitzer was apparently cursed and never scored a hit, and a mix of offshore bombardment from the Royal Navy, light mortars, and superior firepower on a per-squad basis proved decisive.

My first game after getting back into Bolt Action from having skipped 2nd ed. Went well. Gotta get the rest of my armored carriers printed up.

Tiny airplanes! These are really fun to paint. I need to figure out these stands though. Each base came with three rods of different hight and three caps. One for each rod. They're all so lose fitting that I need to figure out a good way to keep them together but also let me swap out different size rods for different altitudes. Right now they just have sticky tack for the photo. That may be the final solution but I'll figure it out later.

Some of the mystery airplanes from last thread turned out to be Pfalz DIIIa! Excess flash on the tail structures made them impossible to identify from the shitty eBay photos. The problem with them is there a bit later war for the 1915/1916 project I'm planning.

>We took over the sector behind the village of Serre on 5 July from the 94th Brigade and at night time, when I looked out, the flares were all going up, and between the lines, in No Manโ€™s Land, there were twinkling lights everywhere. I thought, twinkling lights, what could it be? I found out afterwards the Pals Battalions of 31st Division had arranged that every man would carry a triangular piece of tin on the back of his pack so that when he was crawling forward, attacking, our own airmen looking down could see the depth of the advance. All those twinkling lights were literally hundreds of men who had been killed on that morning, before breakfast, awful slaughter. You can understand what a man felt like to see that. I just thanked God we hadnโ€™t been ordered to attack, although had we been ordered to do so we would have done our duty, I would think, because weโ€™d got to win the war.

You're not depicting the entire 8th army, you're depicting just a few squads from the 8th army. There is no reason to include pajeets unless 1). You are a pajeet or you somehow actually like pajeets, or 2). you felt the need to paint pajeets for diversity and fulfill the leftoid passionate desire to force inclusion in everything. Specifically because Indians were typically formed into their own regiments, it's actually ahistorical to mix them together in your little bolt action platoon. Cuck

I read a bunch of books when I decided to do 8th Army, and a lot of them mentioned the Indians. Plus, the turbans are cool and stand out.

I know that theoretically I'd have, say, Indian infantry, white artillerymen and tankers, etc because they'd all be from different regiments raised locally, but I wanted to portray the mixed nature of the 8th. I can always handwave it and say they're a scratch force in the aftermath of a defeat where everything's jumbled up.

World War 2 is the foundation of modern western civilizations moral framework, it's our Founding Myth. Hitler is our devil. Modern western civilization reveres brown people it's part of the moral framework, which is why all the allied countries have legends and myths about their token brown fighters from WW2. For America the Tuskegee airmen are all brave ace pilots, bravely fighting overwhelming odds to protect the helpless white bomber crews. The British and French worship the legendary ferocity and courage of the Sikhs and Senegalese respectively. Despite the fact that the numbers don't show these units being more effective as their white counters parts, often showing the opposite. No contemporary sources rave about the effectiveness of indians or them being "hard bastards," all these claims were written by boomer pop history authors and are unfounded.

Same anon here. Speedpaint is what I use too: cheaper than Contrast, less coffee stains plus way better bottles.

That being said their naming convention is all over the place and sometime straight up lies to us. Like their Zealot Yellow clearly being too orange. I used it for my Sohei monks and have no regrets since anything from yellow to red is Buddhist enough in my book. I think it helps your own mini to pop a lot too, but if you really wanted yellow then it's Maize Yellow or Pastel Yellow. You can stretch it with Ancient Honey but that's already a bit more brownish/orangey.

As the other anon already said, when it comes to "28mm" miniatures there is some scale fuckery occuring between manufacturers. Even among wargamers there is no agreement, though most would agree it's somewhere between 1/48 and 1/56 and most will simply play with whatever is readily available.

I believe the official reasoning from Warlord for their vehicles being 1/56 is because they wanted to have more room for vehicles on a 6'x4' table.

It's supposed to be a paint, a highlight and a wash at the same time. Before using it you have to shake the bottle so your pigments are evenly distributed. When you apply the paint though the medium will flow over rounded parts and get trapped into recesses. So the rounded parts will dry up with less pigment and be naturally highlighted and recess will end up with more pigment and dry darker.

That's the theory behind it but in practice your results will vary between brands and even colors. If you're a shit painter and don't care to work on your skill this is a nobrainer. If you're a great painter this is one more tool to try and create cool blend effects and whatnot.

Im kind of surprised that we dont really have anything for cold war stuff, not even a bolt action side game (which id prefer they put the effort of K47 into a cold war bolt action expansion)
It makes sense to do a cold war wargame too, as you can reasonably believe some of the countries fought each other more than like, US vs US or German vs German for bolt action. A lot more vehicle and weapon and tactic variety too. I get that its a little ahistorical to have an actual cold war wargame, but i mean again, id still say less so than some of the bolt action match ups, and its alot easier to believe that some of the cold war stand offs ended up in a skirmish
Plus theres just alot more nations and "your guys" to work with compared to ww2
Whats funny is that rubicon ALREADY has a few of the big name cold war vehicles like the t54 and t55, and the btr. Personally i hope they do a leopard 1 and/or an ru251 next

Once upon a time, Team Yankee was huge in my neck of the woods. For a couple of years before covid it was practically the only game anyone was playing with regularity. That really begged the question, why do none of the bigger manufacturers (like Warlord, Perry, Victrix etc) sell cold war miniatures? You'd think their artists would get tired of sculpting chain mail and shakos from time to time, at least.

Cold War era uniforms are distinct enough that they could certainly sell quite a few different box sets. I think younger generations are more familiar with recent conflicts than they are with Stamford Bridge and Waterloo, as well. A themed starter set for Vietnam would sell like hotcakes. I'm sure of it The time period seems ripe for the taking.

The Zulus had some victories and used interesting tactical formations. It's like assuming the Mahdists didn't run a sophisticated river based insurgency and just ran at the screw guns waving their swords. The Vietcong is an even less aposite comparison. This is why reading about these periods matters.

Also the tech level between both sides went through changes:

The Mahdists were reasonably well equipped with a lot of captured Egyptian kit after nobody was taking them seriously.

But one of the reasons for rhe British expeditions was to end slavery which the Mahdi was reintroducing. So by about the second phase of the war nobody living in the Sudan would sell the Madhists ammunition and they reverted to swords and spears. In the meamtime, the Brits are getting Maxim guns.

Would love to see British naval troops from this era in plastic.

Was also one of the last great cavalry charges, at Omdurman, where Winston Churchill was I believe attached to the Bengal Lancers or somesuch.

>Our officer sat at the front with the driver and signalled what he wanted, and the tank would swing round to face the target. The tank would turn on its own in a wide circle, but with two gear changers you could turn it in its own length. The engine was quite powerful and vibrated the machine somewhat, but it was the movement that was worse, up and down, this way and that. I had a job sometimes to set on my target to shoot. Iโ€™d just get set and ready to fire, and bang, the tank would lurch somewhere, throw me right off. The targets were the trenches, anywhere we thought thereโ€™d be machine gun posts.

>There was no choice but to drive over the dead, you couldnโ€™t pick your way through. If they fell in your way, you had to go over them. We never deviated the tanks for anything except targets. When we went into action, the infantry kept tucked in, clustered behind our tanks for shelter, then as soon as we captured a trench, they took over, going along the line and ferreting the Germans out. I only saw Germans when we got right on the trench, with our guns laid on each side. They had never seen anything like the tank before, and when they saw we were armed with small guns and machine guns, they gave up straightaway. A few of their machine gunners got away and we could see them silhouetted against the sky with their guns on their shoulders, going like hell back to their third lines.

Thinking about it more, it would actually be super easy to do a cold war BA conversion, since its just primarily russian and us tanks, with a few others like the leopard spread across the different nations, and then a few nation specific smaller vehicles
Rubicon already does a kit for the t-54 and 55, the pt-76, and the btr-60, so thats already alot of pretty notable cold war vehicles. They also do a 48 patton, so not far off from the early us MBT's.
i also know there were a ton of nations that just fielded shermans, there were still some chaffee's being fielded for a while too
Most of the weird stuff is exclusive to russia, the US, and germany, and theyre mostly just prototypes too

Only if you're playing a Vietnam game that isn't at all based on history.

A good wargame will be nicely balanced regardless of how asymmetrical the forces are. the NVA/VC may not have helicopters or on-call artillery and air strikes, but they have tunnel networks, intimate knowledge of the area, are stealthy at moving through the terrain, often have local support, are lighter than the US, and made extensive use of booby traps.

Many of the Vietnam engagements I read about that weren't clearing out bunkers consisted of the NVA/VC ambushing US forces, inflicting significant casualties, then attempting to melt into the jungle before the artillery or air strikes showed up. They'd take their casualties with them too so the US couldn't get any body count.
I don't remember reading much about VC/NVA hordes - I'm guessing this is just a way for more basic games to 'balance' things without including any of the non-hardware strengths the VC/NVA possessed.

The US on the other hand were incredibly noisy and undisciplined, which made them a very easy target for ambushes. US LRRPs said they learned more from going on a patrol with ANZACs than they did from most of their training and jungle experience so far.
ANZACs on the other hand were crack jungle experts, and would watch the VC/NVA while remaining hidden.

A good Vietnam wargame will give you a balanced game and a good feeling of how combat in the period went down. I'm guessing a bad game will give you hordes of VC that need to be gunned down as they run at machine guns in the open.

OP for the cold war stuff, i PERSONALLY only really like doing 28mm stuff (smallest common scale that each model can feel really individual)
Personally im interested in doing both some of the smaller skirmishes of the cold war (plenty still had vehicles involved) but also yes im also interested in playing out some of the larger scale plans too (My interest in historicals is mostly up to the point to where the units and conflict has historical accuracy, but can include prototypes, vehicles and weapons that werent made but were feasible for the time, and conflicts that COULD have happened but didnt)

If i was gonna check out anything on the smaller end its be team yankee but i REALLY dont like the parkinglot gameplay

I still definitely feel like BA can be converted pretty easily into a Cold War era game, since itd just need some new vehicle stats, some new units, and new nation lists (most of which will either contain us or russian vehicles and variants, just with some nation specifics here and there, and different troops)
Hell i think it'd be easier to do a Cold War ongoing campaign than it would for WW2

Just reporting what I read anon - might have been from the Silent Heroes book, I don't remember, but I do remember the ANZACs being pretty pro - iirc it was from their 12 years of combat in the "Malayan Emergency" from 1948 - 1960.

What's the historical tabletop game with the easiest rule set to learn and the smallest number of figures needed? I'm thinking of getting into tabletop games, mostly because I want to build and paint figs. But there doesn't seem to be a community where I'm at.

De Bellis Antiquitatis (simplish, low model count)
Or
One Hour Wargames (simpler, slightly higher model count)
Or maybe Lion Rampant and its stablemates
Or Fisftful of Lead (I hate this rule set but it's like 5 figs a side)

Loads of figures out there for pirates, I was going to go with wargames foundry but there's good stuff in other places too
Eventually I'd like to get some natives, maybe do barbary and Chinese pirates too

It's not the first time WGA outsold their initial stock allotment for a product, it happened with Quar as well. I think they just expect these products/starter sets with rules to sell as much as their normal boxes do and prepared accordingly, only to find out that these things can sell wildly better.

Over at Dakkadakka Hudson wrote that they re-ordered a large amount of dice for the next batch of Barons Wars boxes. So i think those additional "game components" are their bottleneck. Kinda understandable to try to stay on the safe site and not overstock on dice and books when you want to sell miniatures.

But it really seems they are learning.

Funnily enough I bought my last kit from them, more /awg/ - the town guards set...

When I say last kit I mean I have frostgrave stuff, stargrave, kings of war and a little bit of napoleonocs to get through. I'd love to do dark ages but more wales versus mercia or vikings in ireland than anything else so not 100% fussed by the victrix "just use irish as welsh" option, would rather hold off. Rediscovering old rules sets I had written off. Honestly between fantasy and sci fi and blackpowder skirmish and loads of hex and counter and a few rpgs to run I'm good for now.

A friend of mine used to shit on ffol and i did here roo but I dug iut the books andntheybare great. He was a contributor and had sour grapes I think

So will be using those and that means having to buy even fewer models. Maybe one day I will do Mithridatic versus Marian, good mix of troops there.

I really don't mind reading about the Baron's War, I really enjoyed a documentary I will try and dig out about it and I even love that medieval tech level of reinforced mail and kettle helms. But for the life of me I can't get excited about Baron's War for some reason. I think if I saw them done up as Crusaders against a Mamluk option or at Bouvines it would click with me idk. I feel the same way about the Wars of the Roses, really interesting for me to reas about it...but wargame idk?

Now, the Italian Wars, or English Civil War on the other hand...

Germany: Fokker EII,. Halberstad DII, Avitak CI, Rumpler Taube, Roland CII, Pfalz DIIIa, Roland DII, A.E.G G.IV.

United Kingdom: Moraine Saulnier N, D.H 2, B.E.2C, Sopwith Tabloid

France: Moraine Saulnier N, Nieuport 10c, Nieuport 17, Voisn V, Spad A2.

I wish I could find a Moraine Saulnier L parasol..

Maybe some Austria Hungry, Italians, and Russians later. So many tiny airplanes, so affordable and fun to paint.

If I'm going away somewhere I'll try and mention it a good amount of time before the end of the next thread; but for a list of reasons which would probably be boring, I am very time rich at the moment, with few distractions.

Bolt Action is shit because it's ahistorical and its playerbase are a bunch of powergaming tourneyfags with 40kiddie mindsets ( because the rules are designed to be "competitive" according to the designers), whereas Chain of Command is better for the sake that it's simply trying to be as accurate as it can while also being fun to play.

The Walfisch flight is complete. I really love these little airplanes, the Roland CII is very high on my list of favorite airplanes. Yes, the tan whale has a face, it was very common for crews to paint faces in their CII, and even curtains in the side windows (those black boxes) but that's a bit beyond my scope right now. Introduced early in 1916, she was the fastest airplane in the German air service at the time and could out run most entente fighters. Recon, artillery spotting, light bombers, they'd escort themselves with their synchronized forward firing spandau and rear turret. Poor visibility to their underside would be their greatest weakness, and entente pilots learned they could attack from below, outside of the arc of their rear turret. The British Ace Albert Ball (44 victories, VC, DSO, and MC) would score his first victory against a CII with this method.

The armor rating feels like the best that can easily be managed long as they're committed to a D6 system. Personally I'd have moved to heavy weapons rolling a D10 so we could have more granularity in armor, but I get the impulse to pick one die and stick to it.

I don't know about much other wargames, but from real world knowledge, Bolt Action's system just isn't very detailed. There was a lot of difference between the armor of a KV-1, a Pershing, and a Panther, but Bolt Action classes all three as Heavy Tanks with a bespoke rule or two.

But yeah, it reminds you of old Warhammer because it was very definitely modeled on it.

Yeah but, how much granularity should a game really have? Do you really think it's beneficial to have a completely different profile for every single tank that existed in WW2? That just sounds like rules bloat, when all wargaming rules are is an approximation of battlefield abilities

I like Bolt Action's system and only occasionally find myself wishing for more granularity, but there's always going to be War Thunder types who want to be able to aim for a specific weak spot. Though it felt really weird last week playing a game and concluding that my M3 Grant had done a good job, even if it was just up against Italians.

Frankly I don't really care about the differences in mm between the tanks, and it has enough special rules for the various types that I can live with it (My Comet counts as a medium tank, but when you target the front, it counts as a heavy tank because they over-armored the front)

I appreciate how broad-stroke the system is. My only complaint is how short the weapon ranges are. Something like Blood and Valor's Effective Range/Extreme Range would be a welcome addition, where a weapon is most accurate super close but can still be fired at long ranges with increasing difficulty. SMGs and pistols are basically melee weapons.

Lol I don't know how well you can see it but it's there!

I've been going through ebay and there's so many weird 1/300 planes from long dead companies. I'm debating scooping up some late war airplanes in ones and twos and make a small post war collection, maybe for some Polish Soviet war stuff, or Baltic revolutions. I want a reason to have Fokker D.VIII flying razors and SSW D.IVs. Do I consider 1918 flying circus vs hat in the ring? Or go for a hodgepodge mess of 1920s airwar?

Fuck, I need to finish my current project first, but it's fun to plan.

I'd agree with you but frankly some of the engagements I've read about like LZ X-Ray included literal hordes of VC throwing themselves at the Americans while being strafed and shot to shit by artillery, pinning down the Americans despite the commanders throwing everything they have at the enemy.

Some of these engagements are anomalies, but I've read enough to know that wargaming scenarios where smaller detachments of US forces are holding off VC hordes trying to escape into Cambodia or hold a hill while inflicting massive casualties on the Americans is entirely historically accurate. More to the point, no one wants to wargame a jungle patrol that gets shot at once and then loses six more guys to booby traps after they try to sweep the bunker and hideout complexes the VC just abandoned. I'd rather play a setpiece battle like X-Ray.

bro i havent played CoC i wasnt even comparing it to anything i just dont like how limited the armor rating system is even if it ends up WORKING fine
It makes tanks that historically had majorly different armors end up feeling the same on tabletop
Im not saying BA SHOULD be more granular, but i would have atleast liked a few more armor related rules to actually represent more of the differences in armor
And im mostly just pointing out that while in practice it works fine but it just makes alot of tanks end up feeling similar when they have nothing in common

anyone know if there is a later period suplement for barons war? or else something else that has rules for late 100 years war of roughly platoon size, that is c. 30 men each side.

Always really liked that general game scale. You have enough units for combined arms and separate groups, but still low enough that each model feels like they are doing something. Also just so happens to be a good scale to depict an indivigual lords retinue and is the rough amount a commander could control in detail.

I have, at least in 28mm, a limit of 2 boxes of minis a side
Fantasy rank and flank and pulp scenarios like "redcoats vs lizardmen" are not uncommon here
Probably more /awg/ if you're doing more than using them as base filler ie they affect the game. Probably an opportunity to really lean into the Book of Kells type illustration. I certainly paint things in a dramatic cartoony way because that's just what I know

I wish bolt action had flames of wars approach with every tank having its own front and side armor rating so the panther can have its thick front armor but not have the side armor of a heavy tank without needing to consult some special rule instead of it just being written right there as a number. Also I find it weird the IS-2 isn't listed as a super heavy tank despite having only 30mm less front armor than the king tiger being the 3rd thickest front armor of any tank behind the king tiger and jagdtiger and having the thickest side armor of any tank during the war.

Going to 40k style armor profiles for tanks wouldn't be a bad idea. A Sherman would have 9 Front, 8 Side, 7 Rear, while a Grant mk 1 would have 9 front, 7 side, 6 rear because of the riveted armor.

But they seem to prefer a single damage value on the profile with us having to remember facings and special rules

the funny thing is that functionally they DO have that, but its just behind a few special rules and in a more limited way than in FoW. Which at that point doing it more like FoW would just make more sense instead of having to memorize more limiting special rules
Also i think Achtung Panzer literally has that, definitely wish that BA took that for 3rd edition

Thanks anon! Just to get them on the table I'm going to be using FFOL Starfighters and autism to convert it over into something acceptable for now. Other than that I'm planning on getting Hostile Aircraft and seeing how that is. I have never played any tabletop air battles before so I'm still figuring that aspect out and researching different systems.

As for best periods? Great question, the air war was very back and forth swingy and there isn't really a good generally balanced period as each side was ascendent over the other briefly before losing the edge with rapidly advancing technology. That being said you can't go wrong with 1917 Sopwith Camels vs Fokker Dr.I triplanes, an iconic and pretty equal match up. Or 1918 Fokker D.VII vs Spad XIII, some of the best planes flown by both sides are the end of the war.

Your minis are looking amazing anon, great to see more people getting interested in WW1 air combat.

I wrote and used these rules way back when I was doing WW1 - my first air combat rules, which eventually evolved into Lacquered Coffins (WW2), then Missile Threat (modern). They should be pretty legit to get started with, balance of simplicity and some crunch with representing the performance of each aircraft, which had observer MGs and which were pushers etc. Should cover all the aircraft you have. Even has rules for Zeppelins, observation balloons, reconnaissance, bombing and air defense from the ground.

My 2022 Russian VDV coming along nicely. Almost finished up with these guys then I'll move on to the Ukrainians.

Why are there no rulesets where your guys can go prone on the open field? Every ruleset just treats open terrain as zero cover, but from my time as an infantryman I know that going prone in the grass makes you pretty hard to hit, especially at range. It would be simple to have a rule where you can go prone and get a small cover bonus but with a penalty to movement or something, idk

Apex28 is a Russian company that makes Russian troops from various periods, idk if you can ship them internationally.
I bought them from Empress, but I ran into the same problem you did. I emailed Empress and asked them why they were on their shop one day and removed the next day. They told me it's because they have a very limited supply so they take them off the website when they're not at work so they don't accidentally oversell more than they have stock for.

My on medieval heraldry creation. I think its pretty authentic looking. 3 stars ofc represent the trinity, but also the three wise men. The water represents baptism, but also Jesus's water affinity as a fisher of men, walking on water, etc.

might want to make the stars bigger.

Yes. I wanted to use 20mm bases instead of the usual 25mm bases for ultramodern wargaming so I can better similar CQB in tight spaces if needed, but I didn't have any 20mm circles on hand so I used these since pennies are 19mm. Close enough, but noticeably smaller than a 20mm. I'm just using them temporarily until I order some 20's, but idk I kind of like them being so small. I think I'll always use 20mm circles over 25mm from now on.
I kind of regret basing hundreds of WOTR figures on 25mm rounds, if I did 20 they would have been in much tighter formations.

Phones use metadata to track orientation. 4chan automatically strips metadata from uploads and defaults to a landscape orientation. You can avoid this by taking pictures in landscape to begin with, or by cropping the photo slightly (which produces a new file without metadata to worry about)

You have to make the changes yourself.

My personal mid-war homebrews while playing with dynamic points
All soviet infantry get 3+ saves (4+ saves was retarded and made them unplayable)
Soviet hero infantry and storm groups get veteran skill rating (battle hardened veterans have a worse skill rating than fresh german conscripts?)
Last stand tests must also be taken when a unit takes 50% casualties
Enemy tanks block line of sight
Add +1 AT to grenades thrown by infantry in assaults (even the most heavily armored tank got taken out by AT grenades its just that AT grenades have a short as fuck range)
Overworked only applies its penalty when shooting at long range (T-34s in kursk had trouble engaging targets at range so the most effective strategy was the move in close to hit more accurate shots and valentines were meant to be moving alongside infantry while stuarts and crusaders were meant to move in after breakthroughs but moving them causes them to be practically worthless)
We also added in options for soviets to field T-28s, KV-2s, BT-7s, and T-26s because they used them all up until 1942, the T-26 was even used in stalingrad but not in the stalingrad soviet book and they still had over 3000 BT-7s in service after 1941 and have no tanks cheaper than a T-34 like how the US can use lees or germans panzer IIIs and its just wierd that the finnish can use half those tanks but not the actual soviets. Additionally we don't use any mid-war monsters besides the ones used in actual combat like the dicker max, T-43, and the P-26.

Late-war my group adjusts alot of AT, point and armor values, far too many to list here.

I'm surprised that with the move to multi-platoon forces being the standard, Bolt Action didn't require a separate order die pool for each platoon. That would've been an interesting limit on what activates when and been a way to sell us more dice. I bet they tested this idea and decided against it though.

After doing a bit more research, the second part can be further simplified to "in base the sea proper." And yeah, blazonry is almost like a programming language. And it can get wild, too; here's the blazon for Richard "the Kingmaker" Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, which I'm dreading having to paint on a 28mm miniature:
>Grand quarterly: first, quarterly i and iv, Beauchamp (gules, a fess or between six cross crosslets of the last); ii and iii, Newburgh (chequy azure and or, a chevron ermine); second, quarterly i and iv, Montagu (argent, three fusils conjoined in fess gules); ii and iii, Monthermer (or, and eagle displayed vert beaked and membered gules); third, Neville (gules, a saltire argent), a label compony argent and azure (Beaufort); fourth, quarterly i and iv, de Clare (or, three chevronels gules); ii and iii, Despenser (subquarterly i and iv, argent; ii and iii, gules, a fret or; over all a bend sable)
