I don’t know about “dad energy”. To me the Orion gives off a “slapdashed” energy.

Like…

Like did anyone here ever play 40k? Do you remember times when you played with someone who clearly put 0 effort into assembling the actual minis so that not only is everything unprimed, but panels weren’t actually fitted together right so there’s gaps between them or are misaligned, some pieces were glued on upside down, or backwards or both, and some were omitted altogether or came from the wrong kit, and it shows, painfully. Where the overall construction of the model is so sloppy it actually hurts you somewhere deep in your soul just looking at it?

That’s the energy the Orion gives off to me. Some cobbled together mess assembled by someone who couldn’t find a damn to give. And in a weird way it gives the mech a lovable charm. Like a shelter dog.

The Highlander has a nicer window. Got that executive corner office vibe.

And I always picture the King Crab having a Starship Enterprise style bridge with the pilot sitting in a captain's chair in the middle. There'd be numerous stripper poles as well.

They look really good at tabletop distance lol. I've been fiddling a lot with my faster style (super clean takes too long). Fine details are great and all but they get washed out and muddy at a distance.

I leave my minis within sight of my desk in between painting sessions and gauge what I need to do based on that.

Is it possible you're viewing a blown up picture that's much larger than the model is irl?

Ebon Jag has more pod space than both.

saying that the maddog has the same pod space as a timber isn't entirely accurate because the timby has more engine DHS.

the vulture excels at what its name implies. the lack of cooling and relatively light frame make it just a touch too fragile for standard front line duty.

whereas the timby has enough armour slab and cooling to make it a formidable frontline mech.

Just played the most bizarre games of BT of my life. We're playing a mercenary chaos campaign, and in the first turn of the game my Orion takes a large and medium pulse to the head, killing it. My remaining Spider has to retreat. We go right into a second game and my Caesar blows the head off a Templar with a heavy PPC on the first turn of shooting and the remaining enemy force has to retreat. Both games lasted less than an hour.

> The "Timberwolf at home" is the Rakshasa, exactly as the design intends it to be.
No. The Rakshasa is a prop for the made for TV movie “Love and Lasers as Turtle Bay” and is supposed to be the love interest’s MadCat. Which would’ve been more obvious if you opened up one of the panels and saw that the whole thing is constructed of plywood, duct tape, plaster, and rope. Or if this image weren’t cropped the way it is you’d see just to the right the crane holding the whole thing up like the oversized puppet that it is.

The designation “Rakshasa” was the result of the nickname the film crew gave the prop, and some later historian getting confused and thinking this thing was an honest-to-god mech.

Suffice to say, It didn’t do very well when it first aired and it hasn’t exactly aged well either. Probably would’ve been completely forgotten had that damn mech prop not gotten confused as a real IS mech.

NTA, but by what metric? A stuntmans job is to be the guy who gets hurt instead of someone more important if things go wrong, it's not a thing that qualifies someone as tough or fighting capable, about the most impressive thing a stuntman does is get covered in rags and fire retardant gel to be set on fire and walk around for a few seconds before getting put out, there are fat stuntment.

Strictly speaking, SRMs are direct-fire weapons.

But having only cluster weapons on a mech may feel… a tad vulnerable as it has no consistent damage-dealers, even the longbow has a pair of emergency lasers on hand.

But if you have a mech with LRMs for dealing with stuff at the far-end of the map, and SRMs for dealing with enemies at close range, that can work. Not sure how effectively, but it can work.

That would have been my play. Use the MD's for their original purpose of scouring the Kluster. Also maybe take a little more time to finish developing enough bloodhouse viruses to wipe most of them from existence without a fight. The biggest issue was Fochstar standing against them with their fleet and mechs before Case White and the AMC making their own little shit wars.

Somehow roping Fochtstar into Serpent II, would be my top priority. Forget the Fedcom coming apart and the Star League dying. I bet you could get the Dracs and Fochtstar to get onboard with raping the bears right out of the IS. Get VSD onboard enough and he could probably even wrangle support from his siblings and the Kell Hounds.

Exactly this, Battletech should purge all weeb shit out of the game. CGL has thought up of plenty original, superior Western mech designs, we don't need weeb leftovers anymore.
The Marauder, Warhammer, Phoenix Hawk, Stinger, Wasp, Archer, Crusader, Rifleman, Locust, Shadow Hawk, Griffin, Wolverine, Scorpion, Behemoth, etc. etc. should be thrown out of the game and no longer supported.
It's time we take our game back.

The problems with the WoB "winning" come from their narrative role of being the Bad Guys to the Goons and Fochstar. I always entertained the notion from reading Field Manual: Comstar that they were supposed to be disposed of in a neat and protagonist-like way by the Good Guys: the Jihad narratively doesn't make much sense and exist exclusively to make the Dark Age possible.
If we want to give a golden ending to the WoB you'll need to have the Second Star League to endure (so they can join and start working their way to control it from the shadows), the Clan plot armour to disappear so they can spearhead a Serpent II with all the industrial might of the IS on a single objective, send the Manei Domini on their suicide voyage to destroy the Homeworlds. This requires the Goons and Foch to die and Comstar to be absorbed.
I guess the endgame would be the Clans dead, a second Star League in a pseudo-federation form controlled by the WoBbies through shadowy means and that's it. Beats the IlClan, methinks.

But CGL is just...policing wrongthink and banning direct discussion of printing?

Like, why?

To be fair, bottom is a cancerous little shit whom has openly admitted he's only here to degrade the general and drag it down. Plus, he posted some pretty heinous stuff about anons recently deceased father last thread. He shouldn't be here and deserves a permaban.
>NEA
Guys good, if very tired with the shitposters and trolls by this point, and I'm lucky to be old enough to remember the glory days when we also had the likes of Urbiepope, Warshipanon, and a few others, and we got regular batreps from NEA. Times where a lot better but that was before the monkeys paw wush of Battletech getting revived and becoming popular again was made, and we git the influx of /leftypol/ culture war retards, and the 40kg refugees and their entourage of retards and trolls.
In a way, I miss when we where largely unknown and the community a small and largely isolated part of the board.

What do you guys consider to be the minimum back armor for a medium or heavier mech? Enough to survive falling on its back? Or is there a certain damage threshold?

Depends on the era. Many, many 'mechs in introtech make do with less than ideal back armor. Acceptable back armor becomes non-negotiable in eras with better mobility.

Rule of thumb: should be able to take a back fall for its weight or a mlas hit, with the CT able to take a llas hit ideally but the other two still apply. Clantech screws this up because their mlas does almost as much damage as a IS large laser, but even with weight saving tech having ideal back armor isn't a given.

Depending on its role you can also get away with less. It's especially important for brawlers or skirmishers, less so for others.

I think for later eras, the prevalence of jumping mechs with pulse lasers means you need a minimum of 6 rear armor on the LT/RT and 9 on the CT. But at a certain point every point of armor on the rear is one less point on the front, where most of the time you will be shot from.

Depends on the mech, and what it has. I haven't done exhaustive research on this, and there are surely exceptions, but most mechs which have ammo weapons tend to keep the ammo in the torso. For these mechs, chewing through the rear armor is the fastest way to take them down, most mechs have 2-5x as much frontal armor as rear armor, and even if you don't get an instant win ammo crit or triple crit to the fusion engine, you're still bypassing all the frontal armor to start chewing into the internal structure, and most mechs short of a griffin tend to care if they've lost a torso, if only because it starts concentrating more damage towards the CT.

Semi related, but now that I've been playing battletech more, I've noticed a tendency for people be unable to resist going for a backstab even when it's not the right move. Last time I played I had a mech with a badly shot up left side, the front torso armor only had 3 pips left, the left arm had been removed, and the left leg was down to internal structure while my rear armor was fully intact. My opponent ran to get his mech into the rear table, when in retrospect he could have walked and used the left side hit table. It ended up not mattering because the dice didn't let him get any hits, but I know I've also felt the knee jerk reaction to always go for a backstab when possible, even if that exposes your mech to the same.

Does the Flashman have the highest ratio of rear to frontal armor? I always considered the Victor to be one of the most symmetrical mechs, which makes sense because it's going to be jumping into the middle of enemy formations, but that has 20/10 side torso armor and 30/15 CT armor. Meanwhile the Flashman has 22/10 side torso armor and 25/16 CT armor which seems insane, that has to be an intentional gimp.

So…is it “official” canon that cockpits are not placed behind the canopies and are securely buried in an armored capsule within the hull? Are there any designs which seek to obfuscate the position of the cockpit, ie, in a thigh, shoulder, etc, or are limitations in stabilizers make it so that it’s only feasible to place it somewhere close to it’s balance center?

Oh, I’m not recommending the color choice because I think they’ll come out bad. (Here’s a Caesar in the same color but with a little better lighting to show my point) but it’s so much more of a chore to get those bright, complex colors that it can get exhausting if you have to paint more than a handful of them. Especially if you’re starting with a black primer like me.

This here, for example, needed a base coat of red-orange, a dry brush of orange, and a dry-dry brush of bright orange on top of all that.

It’s a lot of work to get it just right, and if the paint has to be just the right thickness because too thin you can’t dry brush it, and too thick and you might lose details under the layers. And then if you have to go back and do touch-ups, what layer do you do the touch ups in? Get it wrong and it’s going to be obvious.

That’s why for the BIG forces I recommend simpler to achieve colors. Ideally ones where it’s a base and a single dry brush layer. Or if it’s more complex, it’s relegated to smaller areas of the mini (like cockpit jeweling).

Lets you bring inf and convees without feeling like a cheaty bastard by having activation sinks. I've played 7-8 games with the support asset rules, and tons of campaign games using normal convee and infantry rules, and I'm fine with basically all the support rules except for how they nerf movement for the support assets. Just give em their full movement profile and you avoid most of the cancer and tedious bookkeeping that comes from standard rules.

If you actually enjoy the conventional infantry and vehicle rules, then more power to you, but they still tend to be activation sinks, and the support asset rules fix that.

Using black primer makes no sense if you're going to go for full-coverage opaque base layers for your colors which most do, so in a way I agree with you, but if you're going to use a slapchop drybrush+glaze overtop of that black basecoat then black is the most sensible choice, unless you're doing yellows.

Well, yeah that is a handy little trick/cheat to employ, especially when you’ve got a billion or so horde minis to paint and actually want them to not look like shit.

But it’s also essential when painting metal surfaces. Metal paint ends up looking super fake when painted onto a bright surface, but when painted onto dark, especially black, surfaces the metal paint actually succeeds in making the thing being painted look metallic.

Plus white primer just creates the opposite effect where now dark paints need layers to keep the bright primer from showing through.

I like the weapons on the Bolla better, but the C3S is wasted space and it can't use the stealth at the same time as the C3M so it feels like it's trying to do three jobs at once. Morningstar has AC10 and a tarcomp but that feels a bit underwhelming for fire support.

I really like the Stormcrow and it seems to find its way into a lot of different paint jobs I do. I think this one here is like my 4th or 5th. Lately I’m an even bigger fan of the Carrion Crow because you get a little more speed and some very good protection on such a light frame thanks to ferro-lam armor. Wish there were different sculpts out there for the different configs, but perhaps it’s just an incentive for me to finally learn some 3D modeling so I can make my own.

On the other hand, being in the left side arc means your opponent can probably torso twist their arm and torso guns onto you, but in the rear arc the best they can manage is one of their two arms. Even if the backstab is the less optimal choice for killing the mech immediately, if it means you preserve more armor by avoiding return fire it may be worth it.

Ok /btg/ I need help and hopefully there are some grogs here.

I've starting playing Battletech mostly casually, and I have an eclectic collection of mechs in the form of gifts, 3D prints, and random shit I found. I play FWL mostly and have had fun memeing with TAG and SGLRMs and such.

I'm going to be doing my first tournament and while its mostly for fun and I don't super care about going the full distance, I also don't want to embarrassingly flop.

The rules of the tournament is 4 Battlemechs, 6000BV, Clan Invasion Era, no more than 2 difference between gunnery and piloting. And I'll be doing a FWL force.

So my random collection of mechs is so far:

Wasp
Locust
Shadow Hawk
Griffin
BattleMaster
Goliath
Anvil
Hammer
Buccaneer
Scorpion
Highlander
Chameleon
Awesome
Ostroc
Tarantula
Archer
Warhammer

And I might be getting that pack that has the Hermes II, Cicada, Vulcan, Clint in it.

I am worried that I'm missing what seem to be staples like the Thud or Wraith. Given the restrictions listed, is there a well-balanced take-all comers lance I can make out of this?

PURPLE FUCKING BIRD BROTHER!

As a general rule, you should avoid sinking too much into pilot skill, as weight of metal will often carry the difference to victory. You don't need to worry about specific mechs. Unless the tournament is being run by some wolfnet thundercunts, battletech allows you to proxy anything you want. But, if you want to stick with what minis you have, the following is pretty solid:
Locust 3M 4/5
Ostsol 5M 4/5 (use your Ostroc, the two are practically identical)
Archer 4M 3/4
Battlemaster 3M DC 3/5 (Command console giving +1 on initiative is god-tier, as is having a backup pilot for if the main one passes out.)

"Rules used will be from the Battlemech Manual (only 1 ton of precision ammunition per mech)
Optional Rules: movement dice (p13), floating criticals (p45), simplified buildings (p66))."

Is the DC in the Battletech Manual? I'll have to look.

And I don't think there'd be issues with proxies, I more prefer not to as a matter of personal honour and class, but good to know.

I'm also curious if there's a method experienced players use for a balanced lance - like one fast mech, one fire support, etc. etc.

You can always put that Awesome in, although upgrading its skills will mean everything else is going to have to be on the lighter side. The Tarantula is just a quad Spider, but speed isn't the best defense when you're in an era with pulse lasers. Personally I would go Awesome (9Q or 8Q), Tarantula, Buccaneer, and Archer 4M.

Yeah, I'll second this. The Battlemaster was my recommendation on the assumption that you could use it to it's fullest potential, but if command console isn't allowed, the Awesome will live up to it's name. You can't have it be 3/5 with the Archer also having 3 gunnery, but with an AWS-9Q, you can have both it and the Ostsol as 3/5.

The Buccaneer 6PX "Pan" having that designation strongly implies the possibility of a general production 6P happening at some point. True one-off customs don't usually get a number designation at all, but prototypes do, and throwing a prototype into a high profile arena is a good way to work out its kinks and market it. The 6/9/11 shankmech deserves to become a real variant.

Other than that, I just wanted another Charger and a 3rd Victor. I also got 2 Atlas and another Archer because they were all really cheap.
This brings my total mini count up to 180 and with that, I think my collection is good. I don't anticipate buying any more for a long long time now.

I was thinking of building a mixed lance with a Royal Zephyr and LRM Carrier, and a few normal mechs - and since my friends are thinking about doing a campaign, and playing like a bitch and being able to more effectively soften enemies or lay down smoke to cover a retreat seems like it would be more useful here than just deathmatches.

That also includes the heat hawks that the Zaku II's had so It is well within reason that an Axeman could win should the writer deem it

That is how you're supposed to do it. He should have also just had lots of dice pairs available that he could roll all at once.
20 tiny dice for the SRM carrier's attack. Single roll. Check which pairs hit. Roll hit pairs for cluster counts. Single roll. Put dice totals in order and quickly count the clusters to the total hits. Then just roll the locations in batches of 20 dice at a time. Pair up the sames so you're not going: 2 damage to CT... 2 damage to RT... 2 more damage to CT. You want to be able to simply go: 16 damage to CT. You just need to...

That's doing it wrong, though. The order which you resolve the hits can easily change if a mech lives or dies. Like if your LT has 2 pips of structure left and 9 missiles land on your LA and 1 hit your LT, the order seriously matters - if you did arm first and then torso, you'd end up with a dead torso - if you do torso first, you'll lose the torso (and by extension, the arm) immediately, and then all the arm damage would transfer through the destroyed LT to the CT and could end up killing you.

If you resolve normally the LT hit probably falls somewhere in the middle of those 10 hits and changes how much damage eventually transfers to the CT in the end. Just treating a cluster of SRMs like a glorified bomb is completely wrong, and the box of death already makes cluster resolution fast enough that you shouldn't need to do this.

The 9Q is just better. When the heat gets spicy, the 9Q drops down to what the 8Q does from 0. It never needs to fire only 2 PPCs unless it's been engine crit, and at that point it's probably missing a couple PPCs anyway. Especially with floating TACs on.

Okay I looked up the VTOL Battle Armor rules in TW and I have to say: what the fuck

The whole VTOL section is almost irrelevant since they can’t sideslip (no facing) and while they specifically mention Sylphs in the first paragraph or so, they just say “see Battle Armor rules” but don’t clarify anything on which rules supersede which. Also MegaMek is apparently bigly wrong and lets you just cruise through woods like they aren’t even there, so that’s fun. I had my hopes dashed when I went to test them out and then looked up forum answers for more clarity and apparently you just aren’t supposed to zoom through trees all the time. Also you get bomb racks but then can’t drop them into any hex with a woods because you have to be at elevation 3 to fly over but elevation 1 to drop bombs, cool. And MegaMek lets you swarm a mech from any elevation so you can drop from like elevation 5 right onto a mech like you’re skydiving on it which also can’t be right, that would be absurd. And ON TOP OF THAT the other errata and forum answers I’ve found seem to indicate you ACTUALLY apply either the +1 or +3 AMM for VTOL or jump movement (but there’s no concrete answer on which?) despite the infantry section saying you never apply an AMM for infantry.

I want to play these guys the way the developers intended, but I am this close to just telling my group “fuck it, they jump 5” and calling it a day.

Bad orange man added in a 30% tariff on stuff coming in from China in order to push for domestic production and stop companies from outsourcing production and crippling the US economy.
Somehow this translates to a 50% increase in CGL Battletech mini prices
But wait, they bought up IWM!... And applied a 10% to 30% price hike on all minis they sell.
No, they cannot bring the production of plastic minis to America and employ natives to do the job.
No,they cannot offset costs by redesigning the packaging to be less inefficient
No, they cannot sell unassembled minis cheaper
In fact, they cannot do anything to reduce the end user costs. In fact, in the next financial year they are going to have to hike up prices again in excess of inflation to account for uh, well, uhhh... they just have too, okay?

Just use them as logic applies. VTOL move of 5, no AMM because infantry explicitly ignore those, and you have to be at least 1 level above the top of a unit to bomb it. Or let them drop whilst flying over woods.
As for skydive swarming, that makes sense. Battle Armour is crazy durable and protects the user inside from crazy levels of damage, as in Dreadnought calibre gunfire levels for the larger suits, and even the lighter ones can shrug off 120mm gun bursts.

Because, NiceDeamonette you sub-chimp level IQ retard, there is already the infrastructure for CGL to produce minis in the states, its called Iron Wind Metals, they recently bought them out. And on a broader scale, a good chunk of the infrastructure is there to be built on, it just needs someone to do it. Its called future investment, and it goes hand in hand with making jobs and bolstering your economy instead of being another import consumer economy.
But let me guess, if we did that we "would have to import lots of migrants to work the industry because im a leftitard and so theres only option A) export all the work to turdieland, or B) import hordes of migrants to do the work for us, option C) bring back the industry and give jobs to Americans doesnt exist in my world view"

Yes it needs investment, something the Hyper-capitalist Corpo mindset does not want to do, as winnowing away what cost they have is more profitable.

So that investment has to come from someone else, say, THE FUCKING GOVERNMENT!

It's stupid easy and cheap, more profitable than importing from china, for about $0.25 material per mini that can be sold for $10 a piece with a higher level of detail than their chinesium.
Anyone can startup 3D manufacturing from nothing if they want to, and the actual production costs being so low, hiring americans at minimum wage is no barrier to profit.

Even Methville, you need to pay $20hr+Bennies for someone to press buttons that can actually show up to work sober, assuming you can find such a person - because people with that level of competence have fucked off to the suburbs, where their price is higher. And a few million in capex to build your facility. Oh wait, the machines that make your toys are probably Asian or European and got tariffed too, as are your raw plastic inputs. Just cutting checks to subsidize things is less retarded than tariffs, especially if your goal is to produce things people might want. Then again, you just want a jobs program, not to actually make things.

Or you can get Puy Srichapan in Thailand who's other option is rice farming to do it for $15k, and she's probably a better button presser because it's a good wage and there's more untapped talent. Vietnam shoe factories had doctors and lawyers turning on their CVs because the pay was competitive, and they're definitely less likely to fuck up the button pressing.

No, this would be like 50-100 resin printers, something cheap like tge current photon mono 4 would be perfect, 10k detail and $300 pricetag.
Could setup tge manufacturing for less than tge cost of loren's porch, profit would greatly over-cover cost of material, man hours to clean/desupport and replacement of printers when they cease function in 2-4 years of daily use.

You need a substantial industrial space, lots of PPE and ventilation, paying for healthcare when people inevitably develop resin allergies, and you need an order of magnitude more time in QC per model.

The only reason your plan seems genius is because you're basing it on the economics of hobbyists who value their time at single digit dollars per hour.

Then not only is Ping Ping cheaper, probably smarter than the Amerifat you think you can get for minimum wage, but Ping Ping can press buttons and QA an order of magnitude more sprues than your print wrangler can because the injection molding machine fucks up less often.

You are so wrong about how business and the world works, it is not even funny.

Yeah, a scale where resin gets especially messy.
You'd need at least one employee manning each printer, which would be about four times the manpower CGL supposedly has?

Premium minis are injection moulded, the boomers at IWM probably have plenty of know-how, setting up the process is not expensive in the long run and would be cheaper than paying ping, peng, ching, and changing to prep, pump, eject, and assemble everything. Make the mechs on the sprue, you can do all the paets for all variants of a chassis in one pack for pennies. Oh look, cheaper, better quality, and more efficient than chinkesium.
As for the industry, just make foreign production and importation costly and difficult. Just like le big bad orange man is doing. Oh, look, now corpos are looking at investing in American production. Wow. Amazing.

I mean it could work, but you'd need to specialize in machines that do LARGE batch prints, and even then its going to be small runs of 100-1000 units depending on the size.

It doesn't require slave labor, and if that's why you think why things are made in China (and SEA for more labor intensive work), you are 15-20 years out of date. Then again, every post increasingly reveals you do not know anything about how the world works - just operating on some combination of hopium and ignorance.

Fixing the wealth divide doesn't even require tge super rich to cease being super rich, it only requires that their liquid wealth be SLIGHTLY less than it is.

If they wanted slave labor, China and SEA are too expensive. They'd go to Africa and the Subcontinent - but they don't, not for complex work like cars, electronics, or even running shoes. It's because theyre relatively accurate and don't fuck things up, and the pay offers a standard of living that you can entice people that aren't losers out of rice paddies and water buffalo tending to do the job because competence hasn't been strip mined out to the cities yet (and middle class wages in Shenzhen or Hanoi would still get you complete fuckups in the West).

>Yes, because Injection Molded Plastic is EXACTLY like Metal Casting...
Tin and pewter miniatures are made using spin-casting. It's actually cheaper and simpler than injection molding, as the equipment is smaller and requires less investment. The molds are vulcanized rubber so they're less than a tenth of the cost of a die cassette for an injection machine too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5klej1i7_Q

So with low-temp melt metals the cost isn't as concentrated in equipment, as much as it is in labor. Injection-molding plastics is the inverse where all of the capitol gets invested in the equipment and the cycle rates mean that the labor costs aren't much of a percentage. But lease of the commercial space, taxes, and utilities are.

Does the Jihad and beyond introduce too many if-then-else that it gets tedious in its own way? Do people just dislike the writing decisions of the Dark Age and Il-Clan era
