/FUDGE/ General
Happy national Fudge day addition. A thread for discussing Free form Universal Do It yourself Gaming Engine (get it?) A free form role playing game designed by Steffan O'Sullivan with extensive input from the usernet community. The game is unique due to it's use of custom dice with a "plus" "minus" and "blank" sides, called Fudge dice (also known as Fate Dice) Fudge is a highly adaptable role playing system suitable for any genre or style of play. The core rule book and various other Fudge resources are available on the official Gray Ghost Website for free, for more information see:

Maybe consider a numerical fudge build? Or builds of fudge with more crunch which are out there.

For the anons who might be interested in crunchier builds of Fudge consider Fudge tactical combat:

can never get a game with any other adults however, and I am remiss to play TTRPGs online!

How old is old enough?
While most of the games I've encountered which have been targeted at kids I think are not worth playing, a couple have been, so why FUDGE rather than a game designed for younger players that you can also enjoy?

Converted my D&D campaign into Fudge halfway through, we all loved it.

Also ran an X-com (classic) campaign in it.

Both custom builds that have been lost to time.

Appreciate you anon. Will test rules and might use for a one shot. What do people think about FATE? My experience with Fudge has mostly been that and especially FAE. It was fun for a one shot but I wasn't super into it.

Thanks anon, I hope you have fun.
>What do people think about FATE
My group used to do five session long mini campaigns with Fate, it's basically tropes the TTGRPG, so the players need to take on a bit more responsibility for the fun of the game than they usually do. Also it's not very well suited for "power level" type play, your characters are gonna feel like they are around the same power for a while until the GM feels like giving you a story motivated power up. I feel like Fudge does a lot of things FATE can't in that regard.

I do have fond memories of making my own fudge rules and running a one shot as a kid. I used Fallout’s SPECIAL attributes before Fallout 3 made the game mainstream. Luck was always a bit of a weird stat. Either it’s too easy to apply to everything or too useless, hard to balance.

It seems like the sort of thing used for secret rolls like "will the character stumble upon this important clue or not" but maybe I'm reaching. How did you end up using luck in your FUDGE games?

Why would I play FUDGE over FATE
Anonymous No.95914312 [Report]

>Why would I play FUDGE over FATE
Fudge makes better use of scale than FATE and is more customizable than FATE ever was. Hell you can drop FUDGE points entirely and still have a game that works pretty well, while if you remove fate pints from fate half of all mechanics stop working, and as noted before some players feel like meta curacies turn RPGs into a "board game" if you feel that way FUDGE is going to be better than FATE, all of that depends on what you want from your game.

Actual game instead of storytelling

For attacks you'd get to pick a stat for attacking and the enemy would pick one for defending. Someone chose luck as their defence and kept coming up with wacky Mr Magoo ideas to justify it. It was fine for a one shot but would have gotten pretty annoying long term. Not fudge's fault.

Wow, like beating a ghoul by spilling a bunch of marbles on the floor?

How did the one shot itself actually go?
Anonymous No.95918502 [Report]

I think with dF and simple rules we can start the understanding of win and lose states early, maybe five or six years old. Start with just collaborative storytelling, asking and answering questions. Then one day turn that into a game with the the fudge dice, maybe even make it as simple roll one + to succeed or whatever.

Then when he’s a little older get into more serious games. Or just develop a fudge house game further based on interests. The FUDGE to GURPS pipeline perhaps

It wasn't used offensively but maybe they trip just before the axe hits them or shit like that.

>How did the one shot itself actually go?
It was back in 2007 or 2008 so a long time ago. It was good. My homebrew system worked well. A lot of combat and a bit of roleplaying. I barely remember it to be honest but they saved the village or whatever it was. My next game was Iron Heroes instead which certainly had a lot more mechanics to it.

From the looks of it your system was pretty good and worked well for the game you played.

Board games don’t usually involve roleplaying or speaking to NPCs. You can play a ttrpg without a board just using dice. Stupid question.

By that logic adding in a meta currency doesn't take away from what makes an RPG now does it? In fact it's an in game reward for role playing so if anything it adds to it.

Yes, I agree. I like meta currencies but there is a group of players and DMs who prefer to try and be more simulationist with their games. Something I find self defeating.

>Yes, I agree. I like meta currencies but there is a group of players and DMs who prefer to try and be more simulationist with their games
Well yeah if that's the case for these kinds of people they can just skip narrativist games (like Fate) or house rule the game not to have a meta currency at all. It also depends on the system because something like DnD 5e has very poor implementation of meta currancy in the form of "inspiration tokens" wich you only get once or twice in session and forget about them by the time you actually need to use them.
