>RENTRY, WITH CUSTOM MYSTERIES, LORE BASICS, AND MORE, HERE:
https://rentry.org/pmd_synthetic_apocalypse/
RULES
>Grimbright setting. Usual PMD tech level with "relics" from the 80s found in dungeons.
>Mysteries are optional, and the Mystery selection is custom: see the rentry for this CYOA's Mysteries.
>All writefags/artfags grant both the author's character and any included characters 1MP or PP each.
>Type loss can only be taken once by dual-types. If you have one type, it cannot be taken at all.
>Characters from previous PMD runs should take isekai.
>Isekais cannot have comprehensive knowledge of how to repair and use advanced tech. They can recognize it, but not its purpose nor its inner workings.
>Humans do not exist in any capacity. Pokรฉmon don't know what humans are, either, and human isekais will have their memories scrambled so that they don't initially know that they were once human.
>Please check the rentry's "Mythical Asterisks" section before making a Mythical, esp. a Jirachi, Celebi, or Victini.
>Friendship Evolutions are counted as "evolving under level 20," but you must writefag the evolution for the discount to apply.
>Canon Megas only.
>The following abilities cost 3 MP to replace:
Defeatist
Emergency Exit
Klutz
Slow Start
Stall
Truant
Wimp Out

>>95900600The โDragon Warriorโ. There are rumors swirling among the scruffy inhabitants of the Ghettos about a Pokemon with this title, spoken in hushed, nervous tones. They take many forms: that heโs the only โmon to have ever made real progress up the Neverending Tower, that heโs single-handedly taken down entire gangs on his own, that heโs shrugged off moves that should have knocked him out in one hitโฆ they say you can hear him coming before you see him; the jangling of his scales is the sound of salvation for the weak and judgement for those who would exploit them. (Itโs also strangely familiar-sounding to the odd โmon with memory issues, for some reason.) If you cause too much grief and heartache, heโll come for you. As a result, chatter about him in the park is much more positive: a mysterious, seemingly unstoppable heroic figure who appears when things look hopeless only to vanish again once the danger has passed.
The reality is a bit more nuanced, according to recent eyewitness reports from reputable explorers catching sight of him at a distance in numerous Dungeons. He seems to be a Hakamo-o, which points to seven resistances and a bevvy of ability-based immunities. Itโs also apparent that he knows both Dragon Tail and Earthquake, and is not at ALL shy about using them to keep the tide of battle flowing in his direction. Additionally, he seems to have some means of increasing his already respectable movement speed, tying in to the previous data to further control the battle. Contacting him is becoming a priority for the Guard. Thereโs no record or even rumor of malicious behavior on his part, so only minimal caution is advised in approaching. Just be advised that all signs point to him being VERY savvy and pragmatic in combat with plenty of assets to leverage in his favor.
>>95900600Isn't this build illegal? Hakamo-o only learns Dragon Tail before level 10, but you don't have any Experience upgrades.
>>95900670>focusing on this instead of no role
>>95900670There's some cross-Gen fuckery I pulled, but I'm pretty sure it's technically legal. Dragon Tail is listed as Level 1 for Gen IX.

>>95900670He's probably taken from other generations. Scouring between gens to minmax the best possible options is sometimes the only way to get a decent build going. Last time we did it I had to do an abhorrent fusion of 4 different gens to scum for enough moves to have all the coverage I wanted.
>>95900683Oh, whoops. It's supposed to be Explorer, since that neither gives nor takes any points I forgot to list it.
>>95900016begrudgingly taking some time off to try and get over myself

>>95900267Only based if you add on venice OCC
>>95900747Once you start dabbling in the tutor moves thats when you can really start getting into crazy stuff. Never really know what they'll add or remove between gens so its a huge window of opportunity for making busted movesets.
>>95900600>Thunder-Fist>doesnโt learn Thunder PunchF
>>95900803That comes later, after evolution into Kommo-o.
Are we still using the 4-move limit? I know TM moves can have their own slot with Retention, and that Egg moves don't take a slot up, but I am unsure of any other rules. The CYOA says you can start with up to 4 moves but does not clarify further.
>>95900297Stick your balls up your ass and clench yourself castrated.
>>95900772I just finished my Venice game. Doing Korea now.
>>95900297I'll wait for Civ X. I only want to play multiples of 5.
>>95900904My understanding is it's 4 Natural Moves and 1 TM Move, Retention ups the TMs to 2.
>>95901023What about Tutor moves or Egg moves?
>>95901014Good man. What map type?
>>95901123NTA but likeโฆ have you tried just reading the CYOA? It explains tutor and egg moves right on their sections.
>>95901123Nta. It's 4 naturals, 1 TM, Retention ups the TMs to 2. Egg moves are apart from everything, HMs count as TMs, and Tutor moves count as natturals. This is all in the cyoa by the way.
So a max move mon would have 4 naturals, 2 TMs, 1 egg move, for a total of 7 slots, with one of them locked in, since you can't change your egg move, but you can change the other 6 with points later.
Time for a question not covered by the cyoa since they they weren't a thing until after it was made. Do move reminder moves count as experience, tutor moves or are they considered to be under level 10 and therefore free?

>>95901422If you mean level "-" moves for evolved Pokemon, I'd intended them to count as under level 10. Think of them as lumped into the evolution cost.
>>95901422Man, move reminders were absolutely a thing when the cyoa was made, they were added in 4th gen and the cyoa follows up to 8th gen at least with the images. Anyway they are free at the start if you take evolution, but it's a bit of a strange situation if you evolve later, because technically you can only learn moves before level 10 at chargen, there is no way to get them back later.
>>95901453>level "-" movesThey don't exist anymore, now they count as level 1 moves. Also how are you supposed to learn them after chargen if you evolve later?
>>95901483>Also how are you supposed to learn them after chargen if you evolve later?Moves under level 10 are free. They're still free after chargen.
>>95901491No, Experience specifies that they have to be "above level 10" so you can't use that to remnind yourself of moves you forgot or to learn the new moves you get for evolving. It's a very strange limitation to Experience.
>>95901501>They're still free after chargen. That's nowhere in the cyoa? It says you can "begin" with Moves under level 10, not that you can switch them out whenever you want. If that was the intent then it was poorly conveyed.
>>95901455>>95901453Nah, in gen 9 they introduced moves exclusive to the move reminder even for some single stage pokemon.
>>95901533If you want to be pedantic, it also says nowhere in the cyoa that you lose access to moves you learned that aren't on your move list right now. Just reequip them.
>>95901543Just treat them as level "-" moves, then.
I say we make a move reminder npc and if you change your moves you have to write or draw for them (no points gained for doing this per the usual rules)
My vote is it's either a very approachable baby pokemon that has an everstone staff so it's an old ass man/woman
or
Ditto stuck between 4-5 different forms that lives alone in one of the ruins named 'Amalgam'.

>>95901558>it also says nowhere in the cyoa that you lose access to moves you learned that aren't on your move list right now.So we are going by Legends Arceus rules?
>>95901563This is evil I kind of like it
>>95901563I don't think it's necessary, but it's a funny concept and it would be cool to have it. I vote for Jijimon.

>>95901617That would be cool.

The real fault of the CYOA is that it attempts to make no distinction between the New World and the Blues, aka pre-timeskip and post-timeskip eras of OP. You run into this issue of a world where the ocean separates islands. Still, there's an ocean where everyone is a gigachad who has access to a near exclusive form of willpower magic, and if you try to set foot there without a powerful ability or said magic you'll be fucked in the ass. You need to stick to one place, and the CYOA should reflect that.
>>95907887Yeah, I personally don't see a problem with options like that just let you be better at the thing you're going. It's more satisfying to spend points on something like that then other things I have to do mental gymnastic to convince myself fits thematically.

Point Costs, which I'll have to adjust and play-test a bunch with Google Sheets calcs.

>>95908818>>95908845We should stick to Library timeline because it lets us play out the City's dystopia in full glory. If someone wants to play a Sinner, we can just reflavour the option into being a company of scavengers that venture outside of the City in search of the Light.

>>95908896the second two were terrible wtf
>>95908861There's some dungeon crawling, but it's usually more personal drama than ruins of the past. Like every adventure sends you to the home of one of the sinners where you get to flesh out that part of the city, it's factions, and that sinner gets to have a big character arc. Like one of the canon cantos sent you to a manor where one of the sinners once lived and you get caught in a sort of funeral dispute and things devolve into a shitstorm from there.
>>95908881That's a good point though. We can just bend the rules and let sinners do their thing regardless of timeline if people want to. Going outside the city wouldn't really work though, unless the sinners are from out there.

>>95908870The more I think about it, the more I feel like a fraud, because even if I effortfaged for other MPs, it was usually a couple writefags at most. It always cut short and I failed to finish a single arc, which tends to tarnish my memories of that. Those MPs I participated in, which got a closure, were arenas, where the GM carried and I was more passive, so that's also not the same. Then there is also the category of crayons, where I might not have writefagged much/at all, but I didn't plan to really, so there is no disappointment factor, and I enjoyed the thread discussion, but that can't reach like top enjoyment level.
So grouping by those categories:

Signature Combat: Tiger Claw style is as brutal as it is simple. Delivering deep wounds to the enemy using claw weapons, fingernails or less commonly short blades. Its enhancements allow one to extend their weapon with air pressure to pierce and cut at greater distances.
Unnatural Emanation: Though she can actually just extend metallic looking blood claws from her fingers, so it's pretty easy in her case. This technique was stolen from a powerful blood fiend who finds the idea of a human utilizing the technique a grave insult. It would cause someone of a lesser constitution to pass out because it hardens the users own blood into weaponry.
Organization: Looking
Drawbacks: Hunted (Points)(Fangers), No Augments (Superhuman Constitution)
>>95909822Nyx suffers from a rare medical condition that makes her body reject all augmentation which is the biggest flaw that alongside her lack of specialty and subtlety holds her back from achieving a proper Color Designation. As far as an unaugmented individual goes her constitution is quite impressive still and she has trained ten times as hard as anyone else and fought three times as hard to make up for it. Her skill is undeniable as a result.
She spends a lot of time hunting blood fiends but not as much as they spend hunting her. She fights with simple effective brutality that only a few of the most hardened fixers can manage without having lost their humanity in the process.
She only removes her mask to smoke.
>>95909522>>95909547Depends on the build I have in mind, and if the points are worth it.
Drawbacks that dont give enough points are sidelined in favor of just taking flavor. Cause if you take a drawback like Ugly that means EVERYONE thinks that about you. No ifs ands or buts.
So the same as the other anon, if its starting with like 20 points and its adding several options to my build sure, if its starting with like a hundred and maybe getting one slightly better skill or a random perk, nah.
Im not a fan of taking drawbacks unless they fit my build in the first place, but a lot of cyoa you just need to take them to stay competitive. I prefer when they can be used ot flesh out your build rather than cut parts off your build though.
"You cannot use this section of the CYOA" is a bad drawback
"You refuse to hold back in combat and will turn even sparring matches into life or death battles" is a good drawback.
>>95909851You got your good and bad drawbacks mixed up. The former is a good drawback because you actually have a mechanical drawback. The latter is a dogshit drawback because it doesn't fucking matter and it's free points. Your asocial loner build wasn't going to be sparring with anyone anyway.
>>95909851>"You refuse to hold back in combat and will turn even sparring matches into life or death battles" is a good drawback.holy mother of bad taste
>>95909880>>95909882You're thinking of singleplayer cyoas. This is from the POV of a mcyoa only poster.
>>95909890No, I'm thinking of multiplayer cyoas. That poster seems to be thinking of single player considering he wants free points for stuff that doesn't matter in multiplayer.
>>95909894Its stuff that only matters in our multiplayer setting where we actually write stuff.
Losing sections of the cyoa is boring as hell and defeats the point.
>>95909851>stay competitivedesu, this is never a reason i take drawbacks
it's entirely because i'm autistic and don't want to bother with a build if it's not exactly as imagine, which generally means horizontal growth that doesn't make them anymore able to beat up people up
for the same reason i can't stand the idea of taking a drawback that doesn't fit my vision even if gives the exact amount of points i need, i'd rather throw the build away if nothing fits
>>95909898>Losing sections of the cyoa is boring as hell and defeats the point. It's one of the best types of drawbacks because it rewards clever build making. The only point of builds is to provide mechanical grounding and an idea of what our ocs can do; personality based drawbacks fucking suck for that reason. You shouldn't be rewarded in a multiplayer setting because you made an edgelord with diabetes.
>>95909898>>95909890it never ends up mattering though
the builds that always fight to the death will never actually kill another build during a spar, because that's against the nature of a mp
the builds that are wanted by a npc faction will never suffer from them, because writing for npcs is boring as fuck
drawbacks that mess with mechanics and systems are better simply because they're actually drawbacks that can be reinforced
This is the crux of our issue, we all want to enjoy mcyoa differently.
>>95909913>It's one of the best types of drawbacks because it rewards clever build making. Not really. Punchman doesn't lose out on much by taking a hundred points for being unable to buy a fireball spell. It's more free.
>>95909930The crux of the issue is that some anons have garbage dogshit unbelievable taste and they need to be reeducated.
>>95909919Sounds like a skill issue. I also have my drawbacks heavily impact my writing.
>>95909936Some of us only care about mechanics while some of us only care about fluff
Its the source of many arguments like exactly this one.
Obviously people who only care about power arent going to care if they take a drawback that makes them a doucehbag IC
Obviously people who only care about writing their glorblo aren't going to care if they are mechanically weak.
>>95909933That's literally the use case for drawbacks. You sound like the guy who claimed the HP squib should take no magic options and just screw himself over for no real reason. Punchman making a build with no magic should be rewarded for doing so, as that's engaging cyoa design.
Personality-based drawbacks are a relic of self-insert based cyoas and have no place in multiplayer.
>>95909997He didnt take magic options, the problem was he took 'Bad at magic' options while being unable to perform magic in the first place.
>>95910006And, importantly, I proved that he didnt need to for his build to work. it works fine if he doesnt take them.
>>95910006>>95910008Holy shit kill yourself, his build works perfectly fine.
>>95910006>it actually was him
>>95909997>You sound like the guy who claimed the HP squib should take no magic options and just screw himself over for no real reason. No, that's retarded and completely different. Being unable to use magic while at magic school is worse than just being bad it. Meanwhile, Punchman not knowing magic so that he can buy the moon exploding fist doesn't matter at all. It's not expected that he would know any, and he loses nothing from not having it. It's free points.
>>95910076No, it wasn't. That guy's a retard.
>>95909458In the same vein, having to pay for your build to know how to tie their shoes also sucks. A lot CYOAs add sections that make you pay an arm and a leg for fluff and then drawbacks pay you for fluff, which is annoying for MP.
>>95910098What was that one new-ish cyoa where you were magical researchers or something and you had to pay for basic skills to do your job and it was like 50% of your points?
>>95910090The problem was that he took drawbacks as if he could do magic to pay for other stuff. It ruined a otherwise soulful build with pointless powergaming that wasnt necessary to do the build.
>>95910116Thats the one. It was funny.
>>95910090>Meanwhile, Punchman not knowing magic so that he can buy the moon exploding fist doesn't matter at all.Ok, genius, what's the point of drawbacks then? Drawback give you points in exchange for a negative thing. If Punchman can't take a drawback to be bad at magic so he can go all in on punching, then what drawbacks should exist?
>>95910090>It's not expected that he would know any, and he loses nothing from not having it. It's free points.Meanwhile Fireball Punchman comes in and gapes him having magic and punching is stronger than punching. If only Punchman had some extra points to make up the difference in not having any magic...
>>95910125Meanie Head: You are a meanie head and can't get along with others. +5 points

Its more accurate to say
Rival: You want someone else to write about your character and get free points for it. You might write about them in exchange.
>>95910125It's not a real negative. A real negative is having something like having shitty chakra control in naruto where chakra is used for everything or missing a limb in any setting.

>>95910149SUPER TRUTH NOVA HOLY SHIT

Some people seem to think they shouldn't be taken at all, some think they should be debilitating, others think of them as ways to hyper specialise, And others still think of them as narrative devices.
>>95910233Sure he made some pure pieces of trash and from a build making standpoint MHBW was incredibly unfun (like most of them) but hey it got an MP and that's what counts.

Yawn. Wake me up when we do an Eldritch city where every power is paid for.
>>95910248Anyone who thinks anything besides narrative device is a retarded powerfag that doesn't actually think of his build as part of general in which the primary aim is to tell stories.
>>95910253That sounds yawnable. Wake me up when we do a battle shonen academy where all the students are encouraged to actually kill each other and then proceed to do so.

They will save an Egg from some ruins. But they will use this to get more out of the pokeparents than what was actually listed. Or to force favor from them. Stuck as a cartoonish evil sort of character. All their shadowy hands make it easy to flat out steal shit too which you may find Mimizyrius very light fingered.

He was literally making fun of the guy who was arguing that mechanics don't matter by telling him he may as well not even play CYOAs, and then you replied to him saying the same thing without realizing he was agreeing with you.
A dangonronpa inspired mp where we vote to kill a build at regular intervals would be kino. Anons could plead their cases in thread for why they should be spared.

I don't really go into cyoas with any expectation for length. I just do as much as I can hope everyone involved can continue having fun. When it ends, I'm not too broken up about it. Still, there have been several times when I was in top form but things still didn't pan out, so it's difficult to feel there's a point in continuing to pushing something when my best couldn't make a difference before.
>>95910480And that's a perfectly reasonable reply, unlike parroting back someone's argument at them without even realizing it.
>>95910407nobody wants to because they stink
>>95910496I don't think they stink, I think they're just busy. There will be new content someday soon, I hope...
>>95910487I'm a slow writer is the issue. If something is going to die within a week or two, then it means it'll probably die before I even get one writefag out. You could say that longevity is a requirement for me to be able to participate beyond occasional discussion. Lately I'm stuck in a cycle where everything I join dies off too fast for me to put effort in and I end up feeling I was denied the chance to really have fun with the mp. I miss the earlier days where month long mps weren't too rare and I could at least squeeze one thing out per mp I join.
>>95910510nta, but I still say the main problem for longevity is lack of discussion because even the guy that belts out 3 writefags in that time isn't going to be writing for the mp 24/7, and anons are quick to declare something dead the moment writefags slow down because there generally isn't anything else going on in their absence

>>95908698rollin' for points
if I can think of something cool I'll make a build tomorrow
>>95910572So... what's the point of having a custom stage really? The whole point of having a custom built arena like that is exactly having it optimized for your specific fighting style/allowing you to perform some unique strategy, but you're not allowed to do any of that here. And even if you do manage to sneak in whatever minor advantage, why would anyone ever agree to fight on a custom stage? There's no benefit for them to ever accept the risk of entering it(considering the owner of the stage is at the very least very used to fighting in those specific conditions, ignoring whatever wacky plans they might have), nor any punishment for rejecting the arena fight, so why would any fighter do it?
There's also the issue of "what happens if both characters have a stage" too I guess.
>>95910215The Dragon Warrior does everything pro bono. He hasn't yet stuck around long enough to receive a reward. Just a few courteous words and he's gone again.
Part of his motivation is actually sticking to the "character" he's developed. He didn't arrive in this world wanting to pull this Mysterious Stranger shtick, it just sort of evolved over time, not that he minds. When he tries to think back on why it feels so familiar, his mind only returns "East Woods".

TLDR: Old Lady of War who relies on being able to produce pneumatic bolters and force enemies into the open with artillery to fight alongside untold dozens of conscripts. Loves warfare in the same way a more sane woman would love crochet or gardening.
>>95910740>So... what's the point of having a custom stage really? My thought process was "I think stage hazards would maybe be cool settings for fights" and decided that this would be the best way to introduce them that would make sense in the setting. So basically for fun. It also has no real opportunity cost for taking it because your build gaining slightly less lavish monetary rewards won't matter for any but a few, and those few would likely enjoy having a personal arena built anyway.
>The whole point of having a custom built arena like that is exactly having it optimized for your specific fighting style/allowing you to perform some unique strategyIt's also for maniacs who are bored of not having any spikes in their fighting ring.
>why would anyone ever agree to fight on a custom stage?Same as above. Because they are ballsy enough or think it would be interesting/fun, shaking things up.
>There's no benefit for them to ever accept the risk of entering itYou forgot about how cool it would make them to kick a guy's ass on his own turf and/or do so while having a disadvantage.
>nor any punishment for rejecting the arena fight, so why would any fighter do it?What if they get called a chicken?
>There's also the issue of "what happens if both characters have a stage" too I guess. They either pick one after talking over coffee/beer/blood or decide to go for a default.
I also imagine other fighters would volunteer their arenas for use.
Basically it's a narrative tool that anons can use if they feel like because it would be cool. Maybe it's what lets a less experienced fighter win over a more experienced one because the latter was confident enough that any tricks wouldn't matter. Maybe it provides actual zero benefit to the proposing party and screws over the guy who proposed it. Maybe anons just want a spike pit.
Overall I just thought it would be neat.

The way different moves and abilities/stats were represented was really cool since they weren't directly called out, but if you compared it to their sheets you can see when Apollo used stuff like Helping Hand to tag in his partner and Temper Flare to get some space. It felt very organic in that they were all trying to use the tools available to them at the time and adapting as they learned of new information. I think it was a great display of how the duo works together and how they might struggle individually but compensate for each other's weakness.
