>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone, Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...

...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules for alternative wargames.
Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, OnePageRules,
Osprey, Para Bellum, TTCombat, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

The only unpainted models I have at the moment are a box of mantic abyssal dwarfs that was sent to me as replacements. I haven't felt inspired to sculpt beards etc for them, as I kitbashed them with some chaos warrior helmets. Instead I've been touching up my older models and varnishing them.

Also my girlfriend takes up a lot of my time but I don't have a painting desk at her house. That would be nice.

So that we already know what are the cheapest undead and the cheapest orcs lets talk about more modern approach.
What are the cheapest 28 mm "grunts" with guns? Generic, cheap bodies for all of your pulp and sci-fi needs?
I just want a huge swarm of shitty backwater militia for scenario play. Something killed en masse by heroes.
Starting with strong contender, napoleonics from Em4. At 5£ per 20 bodies, even if you cannot find some use for the command, they are probably one of the best deals on the market, but I am sure they can be overshadowed by some chinese green army men.

They claim they want continuity in their range, but I bet it was the pointy hats. Box art they showed does not show much, but it does not look very good either.

They did not mention the old box going away tho. So maybe it's not so important.

I’ve been enjoying it, but I was a big fan of the original run. It’s nice to have more players and more local events for a game I already have a lot of stuff for
Haven’t bought any of the new minis yet, but none of the rules really appealed to me. Vaguely want the new utgar kyries to play with some Minions of Utgar

Looooong arms are long.
also,
>teacupping handguns like it's a 1978 silhouette competition.

But really the sculpting is good, if bland, and trying to make one set of arms fit multiple bodies ends up with them grossly out of scale to the rest of the sculpt. Cad sculpting for injecting molding also has to deal with a lot of limitations that sculpting for 3D printing doesn't.

Mostly binning stuff for later. The projects are not in shippable state, unless you want scratchbuilt orc mechs without arms and legs or terribly heavy castle made out of putty. And some terrible conversions too.

>Who are the fatties?

The two Void-Born Scum are high-strength, high-toughness bodyguards armed with pistols and knives. I bought a pair of Blood Bowl Nurgle bloaters and carved and filed away all the wounds and corruption, before oversculpting to give them one-piece flight suits. The strapping was very deliberately copied from the old Citadel Klegg models in the vein of my Grigor Klegane conversion from a few years back.
After some indecision on the heads I settled on a second head from the North Star pack, and one cut from a Forgeworld Tech Thrall. The knives and pouches are from the RTB01 plastic space marine kit, whilst the holstered pistol is from (I think) a space marine Primaris Reiver. The pistol arm on the upright guy is from the Necromunda Goliath sprue.

I live in the PNW, tell me about it. I tend to batch-prime two or three times a year and then coast on that for several months. Although oddly in midwinter you often get a nice dry patch that's great for a quick hose-down as long as you preheat the primer and the minis.

These are fireforge medieval russian infantry, they use the same bodies as the Scandinavian infantry kit. But this set has composite bows, different heads and shields compared to the self bows and bardiches that the scandis get. It looks pretty gnarly up close, and a few years ago I didn't really have the skills to scrape the mouldlines from the mask, which comes as a separate piece on the sprue. I think the shield is a 3d print as well.

Their prices had already got ridiculous, like Reaper Bones being £5 each for plastic and the metals being £10 compared to British companies charging half.

I'm pretty sure it's the fatigue caused by cyberpunk being a cool portmanteau, so then everything was:
Dieselpunk, Steampunk, Frostpunk, etc, etc, forever till we die.
Shit get's tiresome.
Warmachine is just an early 2000's fantasy mecha game with art that matches it's era. It doesn't need a "punk" appellation, especially since it is decidedly not punk at all.

What pisses me off is that WGA is selling you half the box for the exact same amount RGD used to charge. Like Warlord jacking up the price on Wargames Factory.

I don't want to be mean but this is something that I can't wrap my head around for a long time now. What is the thought process for a person that spend (sometimes big) money on stuff without even basic research? I see it so often I start to think that maybe I'm the weird one here, spending a few hours even before I pull the trigger on a new box. Nowadays I keep bumping into posts of people surprised their minis are made of a different material than they thought or coming without rulebooks despite the product description being clear it's only minis inside etc.

I don't know if this is the right thread but. I was thinking of starting OPR Star Quest, is it any good and is the Campaign book worth it? (and is it possible to get the book without the need to register anywhere? No interest in any patreon shenanigans.) Also is there anything similar you might be able to recommend? Maybe with a bit more choice for customizing and leveling?

Its quite a bit of bookkeeping to keep track of everything going on in a campaign, but it gives you so many random events and other stuff that can happen.
I'd say its fairly easy to just use those "campagin"-things and port them over to whatever game you are playing, if you dont want to use the 5 parsecs combat system. Its not bad, and its quick and easy to learn, but its not as deep as some might want their combat to be.

It's pretty surprising how nice modern 1/72 infantry are. Cheap CAD changed everything. 1/72 armor kits are also an insane value for the money. A bigger problem is sourcing non-WW era anything. A 20mm-ish game is a nice middle ground between 15mm (which already has plenty of troop detail) and modern 32mm

Still planning out my zombies. I think I've got a bit of a plan for the paint scheme after watching Duncan's video on zombie skin. I'm trying to decide how to do the bases. I've got three ideas I'm mulling over let me know what you think /awg/
>1. Simple bases that came with it, slapping on some stirland mud and drybrushing slightly
>2. Get some 3d printed graves and skulls to make it more cinematic and tell a bit of a story
>3. Clear bases so you can just see whatever they're standing on

I'm very tempted by the clear bases because it's less work but what do people think about this?

I think that Kickstarter is also a trap for small producers. If you just want to fund a run of product and then deliver that product to the people who want it without losing money, then it's great. If you want to fund a continuous production of product and then sell it, you just gave most interested customers all the product they want out of the first run (without losing money on it, at least). Now what? They already have the thing.

ikr. I use 28mm for fantasy but I have platoons for literally every nation that fought in WWII in 1/72 with all kinds of heavy weapons, support, armor, hell even airplanes. And the sculpts are really, really nice, they're anatomically correct and they almost paint themselves, with fine detail that just comes to life with a basecoat and wash. The fact that it's ludicrously cheap is just the cherry on the cake.

My 2022 Russian VDV coming along nicely. Almost finished up with these guys then I'll move on to the Ukrainians.

Why are there no rulesets where your guys can go prone on the open field? Every ruleset just treats open terrain as zero cover, but from my time as an infantryman I know that going prone in the grass makes you pretty hard to hit, especially at range. It would be simple to have a rule where you can go prone and get a small cover bonus but with a penalty to movement or something, idk

With Steam, GOG and other platforms you can buy dozens of games for a buck. On the other hand people hardly ever buy a single miniature - they always go balls deep.
You are trying to be a smartass here, trying to make both hobbies look on par in terms of financial and time investment but everyone knows the difference you mouth-breathing plebbit freethinker.

>but many people do side-purchases like extra paints, bases or bits when they buy new minis.

Some do that, others just have a (sometimes vast) collection of paints amassed over the years.

>With Steam, GOG and other platforms you can buy dozens of games for a buck.
>On the other hand people hardly ever buy a single miniature - they always go balls deep.

You are making assumptions Anon.

> in terms of financial and time investment

Tell that to anyone with 5k hours in some pay to win gacha game. Or a steam library with 900+ games, 500 of them never even installed.

Both hobbies can be done unreasonably, and both can be done with normal, sane, spending habits.

Do they now? I can assure you there are more companies with mixed materials portfolio than mono-material ones. Wargames Atlantic and Victrix are the only ones that come to my mind as the plastic-only companies. Games Workshop, Corvus Belli, Warlord, Battlefront, Perry, Mantic, TTCombat, North Star - all of them sell kits of various manufacturing methods. Some of them even mix material within kits.
>Why in blazes would anyone go with 3d resin when you have access to anythng else
Spending a minute on their website is enough to answer this question.

You want simple bases matching color your main table / mat.
You also should do the graves as army specific terrain. Having dedicated terrain is a really nice touch
As for painting remember it is not a coloring book going with only premade pre-approved schemes using only the official paints is super gay.

I use three different mats. One is woodlands, another wastelands. And the last a wintery mat. So the clear bases would be good for any.

I’ve got some paper terrain I could make for a graveyard which would work well for army specific terrain. That’s a great idea.

Not necessarily going with a pre approved paint scheme. More different ideas from different youtubers. However, I’m still very new to painting and find when I follow other people’s paint steps it turns out a lot better than when I wing it. I went for my own scheme with my last dudes and it turned out pretty mid. Guess it’s all learning.

Yes it has rules for drones, including FPV drones. It has rules for a ton of off-table assets you can call in, close air support, attack helicopter, artillery, mortars, drones, etc. lots more.

This ruleset was written by the guy who made Spectre Operations, and it's basically an updated version of Spectre Operations v2. It was released after the Russian-Ukraine war started so it has rules that reflect that.

There are definitely some that have room for improvement. The Roman citizens were pretty bad in some places. The guy sculpted the feet and footwear in very bizarre fashion. The rest is pretty good but those left some to be desired.

Anyways, I found a micro sized echinoid fossil in my basing mix today. 450 million years old, most likely. At first I thought it was a part of a tooth.

Here's one of the footsore Paul Hicks halflings I wasn't going to buy because I need to focus on ongoing projects. They are pretty nice minis, unique in that they are truescale like his other figures. I'll post some more detailed review of them later.

Lookin' good

For fistful of leadanon how big are your units?
My rule of thumb is
4: elites in heavy armour
5: upper end of regulars, veterans or specialists
6: competent conscripts, light regulars, fewer specialists
7: rabble

For Bigger Battles I was thinking of keeping 2-3 units like this representing the normal FFOL bands and then having 2-3 units of 10 foot with much more uniformity of type...would this work?

For 1:72? I've used a couple different things. The most useful is "coin" counters from the old Pirates of the Spanish Main CMG, they're .75mm plasticard that's slightly smaller than a penny but bigger than a dime. There were usually 9-10 per booster on the crew/item card and EVERYONE who played the game has dozens of them. As a nice bonus, you can multibase them on regular 40mm bases. Works well for weapon teams too.
Cavalry usually fits on a 25mm base cut in half.

>Any of yall try brutality?
>I'm looking for a skrimish where I can use any team I want and this looks on the money
Yeah, it's one of the things my group does when we need to blow off steam. The one-player/NPC AI is really good. The warband creation is so fast we spent several months playing games where you just grabbed a handful of random models and statted them up on the spot. Which leads to things like fielding Major Kusanagi, a velociraptor, a couple robots, an angel, and a werewolf against some heroclix and a Kingdom Death pinup. It's a great way to break out whatever random models you've collected but never had a chance to put on the table.

Any easy skirmisher rule sets that allow for both fantasy and history? I was thinking to get into Saga but I heard it's hard to have Age of Magic armies go up against the Saga historical universes. I also don't really want to just play a fantasy skirmishes were there's just human faction or something because I'd like specific historical factions go against each other, but also undead or goblins.

Relicblade comes to mind as the first game that likes around 4 minis per side, you probably want an extra little zombie or two to round out a squad for whatever game but there should be some smaller scale ones if you check the mega. I suppose also because I've been reading it lately Deepwars(building your own units and playing on the surface or playing its sister game shadowsea) also works at 4 minis for a starter force.

>but whats GWAR?
A punk/metal band and art collective from the 1980s that does extremely silly and offensive stage shows. They're also all gamers - I got a backstage pass once for helping crowdfund something and we literally spent an hour bullshitting about foam rubber props, wargames, and D&D while a couple of groupies got progressively more and more uncomfortable as they realized what kind of nerd hive they'd walked into. Several of the members have died, retired, or been punted over the years. The shows are usually kind of like extremely gory and silly comic books mixed with live-action kaiju performances. There's a lengthy, very stupid mythology attached to them that's more than a little bit parodying Kiss and 40k. This guy is their "manager", he keeps the band hooked on crack and uses a boltgun as a sidearm.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRFfPQwRYFw
The guys who created Green Jello and Tool were college roommates and did stage work for Gwar back in the eighties.

It might be worth it to buy a sprue of GBP, WGA and Victrix from an ebay seller. Then you can compare, contrast and kitbash.

As I said the WGA Goths are small, their peasants are bigger and I've been able to kitbash then with Victrix who I think I way better sculpts, especially the faces.

Well I trusted your judgement and got them separately from Victrix, they will be perfect not only for my fistful of lead bands and bigger battles they will give me some spare bits for fantasy kitbashes. Really love that late Roman period.

Gripping Beast I have found the sculpts hold up okay but they are definitely on the smaller side. I normally don't care if it's not egregious but I'm glad I spent extra and got some extra figures.

You can buy or roll leader upgrades in lion Rampant and the leader also gives some command bonuses to nearby units. I guess you could make more powerful single model units in dragon rampant. The upcoming 2nd edition will probably give a lot more variety in that department.

the split production is actually beneficial i think. Lets say they have 20 injection molding machines in the US, so they can make 20 different sprues there at any given time.
Now they have maybe 10 more machines in the UK. So they can make 30 different sets at the same time.
Sure shipping the molds back and forth is probably a logistical nightmare to cycle through their increasing range at both factories, but more machines mean more stuff will be available.

Historicals go pretty wild, although it's hex and chit games that go really stupidly granular.
>no, pike and horse 1654 can't handle that battle which took place in 1670, you need horsey pikes deluxe 2 with the 1669 expansion
>by the way both of these cost $70 and are only intended to play one to three real life battles or very small ahistorical variants of those battles. no, they are not compatible ruleswise, even though they both use very similar rules derived from a ruleset that was released in 1986 for a different singular battle that occurred in the mid-16th century.

Like other anon kind of said its more of the latter. there are basic unit profiles that you customize with special rules per profile or overall fantastical rules for fantasy stuff. You can make hero units by making a powerful profile and using a single hero to represent it, and overall you would be building faction rosters yourself, but you could make distinct rosters for different human factions and fantasy factions. I think the book does give example factions too which you could treat as default.

yeah, GW Flesh Wash over yellow ochre made perfect Bakelite. Ochre is super easy to find under some variant of "plague/vermin brown" in most paint lines (it's a sort of brownish goldenrod), and their old Flesh Wash was chestnut with a touch of dark red IIRC. Reaper does a good chestnut wash, so does Army Painter.

They also financed Cromwell and the Great Restoration
Regardless, The Continental system was France aggressively cutting off British trade, attacking countries that traded with Britain, isolating and starving the economy. No European country was permitted to trade with Britain under this system.

Despite this, the Coalition prevailed. Who financed Napoleon? Who reihtroduced slavery?

>Napoleon initially won the allegiance of Jews when, in 1797, he emancipated Jews in Ancona, Italy. He officially chose two High Priests of the Jewish Nation and seven councillors to the High Priests.

New one seems to have more neutral posing, more weapon variety, and more head variety
Ill concur that the new ones fit more of a "dregs" role than cultists, but overall im looking forward to these since the second set was so nice (just all female, ill probably get a sprue but i dont want to have a full warband)

It occurred to me that hobgoblin would be a pretty good introductory wargame for my son. The rules are simple, there's no individual casualty removal and units are only removed at the end of turn, so every unit gets to do at least something during the battle. The fortune cards can be added later.

For those with kids who wargame with them, how and when did you start playing with them?

It would work great for a high speed mecha game, like Votoms or Front Mission with the roller dashing, or obviously any kind of dogfighting be it mecha or biplanes.
A licensed Armored Core game ripping of the FlightPath movement templates and dials would be perfect, as AC has always enforced fatal out of bounds areas in the vide games. And the variety between tank like heavy hover versus high speed dash means the tactical level could be deep.
Would definitely be hard to balance though. Boosters, FCS, movement types, weapons types, a total nightmare.
Would also be a way better Gundam game than whatever that hex based boardgame coming out next year is going to be.

Yeah, but the dial and movement templates have this kind of built in inertia, that people don't really have. As far as tactical level movement goes anyway.
Though I have played a few tactical squad level video games that use preplanned movements for both sides where you then get to watch the turn play out. So I can see how it would work, but it would almost need to be a grid based board for precise movements versus a dial with move templates. The stress based mechanics are also super underused as far as skirmish games go, so that's a must use.
I'm messing around with grids right now referencing Dust Tactics for a sort of okay implementation of grids with both human and mecha/vehicle scale movement.

depending on what your plans were for them that doesn't necessarily disqualify them. If you have other arms you prefer you could just cut them at the shoulder and attach the more traditional multipose arms that way. Might have to use a bit of putty to cover the transitions, but I'd wager you can use arms from most historical kits with those if you need uniform equipment.
