>Previous thread:

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix, Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone, Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...

...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules for alternative wargames.
Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, OnePageRules,
Osprey, Para Bellum, TTCombat, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

The only unpainted models I have at the moment are a box of mantic abyssal dwarfs that was sent to me as replacements. I haven't felt inspired to sculpt beards etc for them, as I kitbashed them with some chaos warrior helmets. Instead I've been touching up my older models and varnishing them.

So that we already know what are the cheapest undead and the cheapest orcs lets talk about more modern approach.
What are the cheapest 28 mm "grunts" with guns? Generic, cheap bodies for all of your pulp and sci-fi needs?
I just want a huge swarm of shitty backwater militia for scenario play. Something killed en masse by heroes.
Starting with strong contender, napoleonics from Em4. At 5£ per 20 bodies, even if you cannot find some use for the command, they are probably one of the best deals on the market, but I am sure they can be overshadowed by some chinese green army men.

They claim they want continuity in their range, but I bet it was the pointy hats. Box art they showed does not show much, but it does not look very good either.

They did not mention the old box going away tho. So maybe it's not so important.

Looooong arms are long.
also,
>teacupping handguns like it's a 1978 silhouette competition.

But really the sculpting is good, if bland, and trying to make one set of arms fit multiple bodies ends up with them grossly out of scale to the rest of the sculpt. Cad sculpting for injecting molding also has to deal with a lot of limitations that sculpting for 3D printing doesn't.

The two Void-Born Scum are high-strength, high-toughness bodyguards armed with pistols and knives. I bought a pair of Blood Bowl Nurgle bloaters and carved and filed away all the wounds and corruption, before oversculpting to give them one-piece flight suits. The strapping was very deliberately copied from the old Citadel Klegg models in the vein of my Grigor Klegane conversion from a few years back.
After some indecision on the heads I settled on a second head from the North Star pack, and one cut from a Forgeworld Tech Thrall. The knives and pouches are from the RTB01 plastic space marine kit, whilst the holstered pistol is from (I think) a space marine Primaris Reiver. The pistol arm on the upright guy is from the Necromunda Goliath sprue.

These are fireforge medieval russian infantry, they use the same bodies as the Scandinavian infantry kit. But this set has composite bows, different heads and shields compared to the self bows and bardiches that the scandis get. It looks pretty gnarly up close, and a few years ago I didn't really have the skills to scrape the mouldlines from the mask, which comes as a separate piece on the sprue. I think the shield is a 3d print as well.

Warmachine is just an early 2000's fantasy mecha game with art that matches it's era. It doesn't need a "punk" appellation, especially since it is decidedly not punk at all.

What is the thought process for a person that spend (sometimes big) money on stuff without even basic research? I see it so often I start to think that maybe I'm the weird one here, spending a few hours even before I pull the trigger on a new box. Nowadays I keep bumping into posts of people surprised their minis are made of a different material than they thought or coming without rulebooks despite the product description being clear it's only minis inside etc.

Its quite a bit of bookkeeping to keep track of everything going on in a campaign, but it gives you so many random events and other stuff that can happen.
I'd say its fairly easy to just use those "campagin"-things and port them over to whatever game you are playing, if you dont want to use the 5 parsecs combat system. Its not bad, and its quick and easy to learn, but its not as deep as some might want their combat to be.

Most of those ebay prices are based on the AoS box of 10 of them. By now, if you can get GW stuff with 20% discount from any hobby store, you might get a better deal buying a new ToW box instead of getting them used.

Still planning out my zombies. I think I've got a bit of a plan for the paint scheme after watching Duncan's video on zombie skin. I'm trying to decide how to do the bases. I've got three ideas I'm mulling over let me know what you think /awg/
>1. Simple bases that came with it, slapping on some stirland mud and drybrushing slightly
>2. Get some 3d printed graves and skulls to make it more cinematic and tell a bit of a story
>3. Clear bases so you can just see whatever they're standing on

I think that Kickstarter is also a trap for small producers. If you just want to fund a run of product and then deliver that product to the people who want it without losing money, then it's great. If you want to fund a continuous production of product and then sell it, you just gave most interested customers all the product they want out of the first run (without losing money on it, at least). Why are there no rulesets where your guys can go prone on the open field? Every ruleset just treats open terrain as zero cover, but from my time as an infantryman I know that going prone in the grass makes you pretty hard to hit, especially at range. Games Workshop, Corvus Belli, Warlord, Battlefront, Perry, Mantic, TTCombat, North Star - all of them sell kits of various manufacturing methods. Some of them even mix material within kits.

Not necessarily going with a pre approved paint scheme. More different ideas from different youtubers. Yes it has rules for drones, including FPV drones. It has rules for a ton of off-table assets you can call in, close air support, attack helicopter, artillery, mortars, drones, etc. lots more.

This ruleset was written by the guy who made Spectre Operations, and it's basically an updated version of Spectre Operations v2. It was released after the Russian-Ukraine war started so it has rules that reflect that.

There are definitely some that have room for improvement. The Roman citizens were pretty bad in some places. The guy sculpted the feet and footwear in very bizarre fashion. The rest is pretty good but those left some to be desired.

Anyways, I found a micro sized echinoid fossil in my basing mix today. 450 million years old, most likely. At first I thought it was a part of a tooth.

Here's one of the footsore Paul Hicks halflings I wasn't going to buy because I need to focus on ongoing projects. They are pretty nice minis, unique in that they are truescale like his other figures. I'll post some more detailed review of them later.

For fistful of leadanon how big are your units?
My rule of thumb is
4: elites in heavy armour
5: upper end of regulars, veterans or specialists
6: competent conscripts, light regulars, fewer specialists
7: rabble

For Bigger Battles I was thinking of keeping 2-3 units like this representing the normal FFOL bands and then having 2-3 units of 10 foot with much more uniformity of type...would this work?

For 1:72? I've used a couple different things. The most useful is "coin" counters from the old Pirates of the Spanish Main CMG, they're .75mm plasticard that's slightly smaller than a penny but bigger than a dime. There were usually 9-10 per booster on the crew/item card and EVERYONE who played the game has dozens of them. As a nice bonus, you can multibase them on regular 40mm bases. Works well for weapon teams too.
Cavalry usually fits on a 25mm base cut in half.

Yeah, it's one of the things my group does when we need to blow off steam. The one-player/NPC AI is really good. The warband creation is so fast we spent several months playing games where you just grabbed a handful of random models and statted them up on the spot. Which leads to things like fielding Major Kusanagi, a velociraptor, a couple robots, an angel, and a werewolf against some heroclix and a Kingdom Death pinup. It's a great way to break out whatever random models you've collected but never had a chance to put on the table.

A punk/metal band and art collective from the 1980s that does extremely silly and offensive stage shows. They're also all gamers - I got a backstage pass once for helping crowdfund something and we literally spent an hour bullshitting about foam rubber props, wargames, and D&D while a couple of groupies got progressively more and more uncomfortable as they realized what kind of nerd hive they'd walked into. Several of the members have died, retired, or been punted over the years. The shows are usually kind of like extremely gory and silly comic books mixed with live-action kaiju performances. There's a lengthy, very stupid mythology attached to them that's more than a little bit parodying Kiss and 40k. This guy is their "manager", he keeps the band hooked on crack and uses a boltgun as a sidearm.

the split production is actually beneficial i think. Lets say they have 20 injection molding machines in the US, so they can make 20 different sprues there at any given time.
Now they have maybe 10 more machines in the UK. So they can make 30 different sets at the same time.
Sure shipping the molds back and forth is probably a logistical nightmare to cycle through their increasing range at both factories, but more machines mean more stuff will be available.

I think the book does give example factions too which you could treat as default.

It occurred to me that hobgoblin would be a pretty good introductory wargame for my son. The rules are simple, there's no individual casualty removal and units are only removed at the end of turn, so every unit gets to do at least something during the battle. The fortune cards can be added later.

For those with kids who wargame with them, how and when did you start playing with them?

Are there any note-worthy alternative skirmish games with a pre-planned action system à la X-wing and Star Wars Armada? I wonder how would it work in a non-naval game.

It would work great for a high speed mecha game, like Votoms or Front Mission with the roller dashing, or obviously any kind of dogfighting be it mecha or biplanes.
A licensed Armored Core game ripping of the FlightPath movement templates and dials would be perfect, as AC has always enforced fatal out of bounds areas in the vide games. And the variety between tank like heavy hover versus high speed dash means the tactical level could be deep.
Would definitely be hard to balance though. Boosters, FCS, movement types, weapons types, a total nightmare.
Would also be a way better Gundam game than whatever that hex based boardgame coming out next year is going to be.

Yeah, but the dial and movement templates have this kind of built in inertia, that people don't really have. As far as tactical level movement goes anyway.
Though I have played a few tactical squad level video games that use preplanned movements for both sides where you then get to watch the turn play out. So I can see how it would work, but it would almost need to be a grid based board for precise movements versus a dial with move templates. The stress based mechanics are also super underused as far as skirmish games go, so that's a must use.
I'm messing around with grids right now referencing Dust Tactics for a sort of okay implementation of grids with both human and mecha/vehicle scale movement.

It's so much worse. How did the cellphone singlehandedly destroy functional web development? Sidebars? Can't have that. Persistent and nested menus for easy navigation? Nope, doesn't display well on a 3" wide screen. Everyone is using the same shitty e-commerce templates and they are all so bad. Euro/Brit companies are definitely the worst, and that's where all the cool minis are.
Who would have thought the future was vertically letter-boxed webpages with only 1/3 of the width of my screen being utilized.

I'm not going to buy Cultists I just for some heads if the bodies in Cultists III are a significant upgrade. It's an inconvenience if there's no capirotes, I've liked the look since I started playing Warhammer way back. depending on what your plans were for them that doesn't necessarily disqualify them. If you have other arms you prefer you could just cut them at the shoulder and attach the more traditional multipose arms that way. Might have to use a bit of putty to cover the transitions, but I'd wager you can use arms from most historical kits with those if you need uniform equipment.
