All this cathay lore is just in-canon propaganda
Come up with variant rules for state troops from each Empire province /wfg/
>>95915460Wrong, nothing in the AJ is written from an in-character perspective.
>>95915444 (OP)>In many nations of Man, the rulers are all cunts. But not the Celestial Dragon. There's only like 4 other nations of man that we know about, right? So by "many" they mean "all the others, stupid gweilo"
Could someone please link me to the TOW rpg gamemasters guide ? That'd be awesome
>>95915477Cathay is so cool it can do that
>>95915480They literally go on at length about how every other human nation is barbaric and superstitious compared to Grand Cathay, even the golden age of Khemri.
>>95915467Why? Are middenheimers really that different from reiklanders to warrant special rules?
>>95915209C7 wanted more money, and WFRP(especially 4e) is pretty crunchy compared to recently made systems, so they probably thought they lost sales with WFRP due to that crunch
I do like the magic system in TOW RPG, improvising spells seems interesting and fits with TOW's magic system being a lot less defined than it is by the time of WFB/WFRP.
>>95915467Copy the stuff from Mordheim.
Reikland missile seegeants get +1 bs, middenheim sergeants +1 strength, and Marienburgers break the game by allowing you field 20% extra troops for free.
>tfw total war got a more nuanced and morally grey depiction of cathay and its dragons than the actual game
>>95915483It's not out in PDF form until July since it's "not ready yet"
>think it silly that Nippon is just the formal name for real life Japan transplanted into Fantasy
>Cathay is just an old timey name for China that is still used by some companies to this day
I think I shall cease trying to deny the silliness of Fantasy.
>>95915523Yeah that's pretty crazy, but you are correct.
>>95915524Oh, I see, thank you !
>>95915527It's girth shall extrude
Is Wild Herd for beastmen fun? It seems very silly to have a unit of 40 models and run them straight up the board.
>>95915523Total War takes place 200 years after TOW in a time where the End Times are canon.
>>95915538>Is Wild Herd for beastmen fun? It seems very silly to have a unit of 40 models and run them straight up the board.I'm under the impression that they might become good with a daemonology caster giving the that fly spell
>>95915467>Reikland: Sigmar's Own- State Troops of Reikland province have Hatred: Chaos>Stirland: Ceaseless Vigil- State Troops of Stirland may reroll the lowest dice in follow up moves>Averland: Eccentric Leadership- State Troops of Averland may use the generals leadership without the usual restrictions from command auras>Hochland: Crack shots- State Missile Troops armed with handguns may ignore penalties for firing at long range. >Nordland: Grim Tenacity- State Troops of this province may reroll all panic and terror tests>Middenheim: Sons of Ulric- State Troops of this province add +1 to combat resolution for each enemy casualty inflited by the unit on the opposing unit at the end of each round of combat>Ostland: Cold Temper- State Troops of this province may reroll charge rolls if the opponent has a unit within their deployment zone.
>Spend all day travelling.
>Get home.
>Open up good old /tg/.
>Go to see what I missed about TOW today.
>mfw
>>95915593He did nothing wrong.
>>95915444 (OP)link to AJ: Our Super Special Cathay Friends
and bad scan of Matched Play:
>>95914237
Can someone post the scan of the Cathay AJ? I want to read the totally true and accurate depiction of the greatest nation in the Warhammer universe
>>95915538Fun? Yeah you can have some cheap blocks thanks to gor/ungor and some wizard shenanigans. However gorsaken are very hit or miss and otherwise infantry isn't the best this edition. But you can stack some ridiculous buffs spamming wizards around a herdstone
>>>95915409Just an FYI, but the infantry buffs are coming in a separate PDF, not in the actual book.
>>95915593You will use the army break point condition.
You will get the Miao Ying body pillow.
You will actually paint your figures before buying more.
Yeah this writing is dogshit. Iโm gonna check out until I see the arcane journal for any of the legacy factions and see if maybe the writing improves.
Is the matched play shit at least any fun?
>>95915444 (OP)Fought a 750 game today against my Dwarf friend. Rolled for scenario and got open battle.
It was a bloody mess and Korgoth lead his warriors. The rangers gunned down my hounds while my knights went around to try a flank.
There was a massive fight between the Ogres and Dwarf warriors mid, ogres breaking and the marauders being overran into.
Korgoth, due to a major deployment mistake, had to watch with his warriors as their charge was blocked by marauder bodies! But the Chaos Knights, having gotten into position, flank charged the warriors. Between the flails and lances, they broke and ran, the marauders legging it into the rangers and knights overrunning into his Hammerers.
After 2 rounds of grinding combat, the dwarfs conceded. VICTORY TO CHAOS
>>95915628The rules are pretty good, but unrionically every tournament I've been to had the same army comp stuff. The missions are good and the objectives are nice (baggage trains make a return which is fucking cool. 60x100 dioramas that cannot move and can be destroyed by your opponent or held by your for VP).
>>95915467I mean the state troops themselves wouldn't bary too much, you could get different army lists with some different magic items, organization, and maybe special rules here and there, but a middenheim troop is going to be imperceptibly different from an averlander troop assuming they're in the same army under the same command
Whatever just get Cathay over with and release kislev already. Gimme an army of ugly rugged kossars and cute dainty ice witches.
>>95915477Isn't literally everything in Warhammer lore written from an in-universe perspective? That's why lore often contradicts itself and fa lions are always presented in their best light in their own books.
>>95915671This is why I prefer Fantasy over 40k. So much more variety. Even new armies like the proposed Kislev are visually distinct and not just generic dude in power armor #88.
>>95915674Pretty sure that's mostly bullshit and it's just GW being inconsistent and not caring to double check.
>>95915671I'm sorry, anon. The diversity commissariat has decreed that you're getting cute dainty kossars and ugly rugged ice witches.
>>95915444 (OP)AVANTI PIGGALO!
>>95915480Grorious Nippon is superior to Cathay.
>>95915728"CAZZATA, PIGGALO!
Do you approve of the book, or would stick with 4th edition instead?
>>95915731They do canonically have the most attractive women.
Out of demons, dragons, elves, according to the Hung Nipponese women are at the top.
For what the word and opinion of a chaos barbarian is worth.
>>95915713You know what I'll still take it
>kralmaw
>beastlord
>wargor
>centigor lord
>2x battalion boxes
>centigor herd + command
RAROO
High elves for friendly games, Cathay for tournaments.
Wood elves to look good on the shelf.
Dark elves as DoK for AoS.
>>95915690Imperial guard?
>>95915793Most of the armies in 40k are dudes in power armor.
I've seen maybe five guys play Guard the past five years. One playing nids. One playing Orkz.
>>95915746It just seems a bit shallow to me.
I don't know, the modern rpg thing of abstracting battle maps and money and stuff just doesn't work for my group. It falls apart in about 30 seconds as soon as the players start asking questions.
4e could really do with some fixing amd streamlining, especially things like size, fear, moving out of combat, some weapon/armour interactions and so on. But this ain't it. I skimmed the whole book for something worth stealing, but there isn't anything, really. Barely any new background. It's just fine.
The pre-college magic confuses me though. Everyone still perceives the eight winds. Magic doesn't seem any more dangerous. What exactly did Teclis do? Just say 'don't mix your winds, retards' and fly away?
>>95915646I really need to work on deployment. I ended up on a choke point and if not for a lucky charge with my knights I would have just gotten grinded out hard and get shot.
Lots of learning still.
>>95915628>arcane journal for any of the legacy factionI don't think there would be one. Maybe in the next edition, if ever
>>95915746Seems a little more accesible for newer players, might try it with my group.
He did it right ... It was him all along ?
>>95915918No, though he probably should have warned the Old Ones.
>>95915918That would give catahy some depth so no
>>95915929They knew the risks, not sure a warning would have helped.
>>95915699Is there anything to contest this? I don't think I've seen rhe narration used in rulebooks and armybooks use out of setting language before or refer to the setting as a "setting" and not as "the world"
That's not very cash-money of Xenny.
>>95915674>Isn't literally everything in Warhammer lore written from an in-universe perspective? No.
>>95915949There's definitely times when the books explicitly say things no person in the world knows.
>>95915967>warpstone-dust-infused clayThank fuck. The idea of them being made out of actual solid warpstone was just too dumb to countenance.
Still seems like a stupid idea though. I guess if you live in the warpstone desert to begin with then this is just tuesday.
>>95915349The elf death goddess Ereth Khial and all the Shyish wizards of the Empire went poof when Nagash separated Shyish from the Great Vortex in the end times, that was probably the end of Shiyama too, which meant Chaos could cross the Dragon River and go around the Bastion.
>>95915918It was either him, Morathi, the Fimir, or the Dragon Ogres yeah.
>>95916045It was caveman Be'lakor who bashed the control panels with his club.
>>95916043The river might have remained deadly anyway, but this time to both Cathayans and Chaos since it'd be on Nagash's side.
>the Sky Titans were actually gifted the knowledge of black powder by the Celestial Dragon, for sentimental reasons, in response to the ogres invading their lands
Well that's kind of lame.
>>95916086I mean, no different to the dwarves being taught how to make blackpowder by Cathayans.
>>95916086Remember when Votann were introduced and it turned out Tau railgun technology, their signature weapon, was just based on Votann designs?
>>95916086Cathay taught the elves how to irrigate as well
>>95916045The Cathay AJ suggests that it was the Chaos gods or their daemons who broke the portals, not anyone mortal
>>95916086Oh good, now instead of us knowing one interesting thing about the Sky Titans we know none.
Oh wait, they had flying mountains. Don't worry, though, Cathay has those too. Loads of 'em.
Has an actual mechanism for those been mentioned yet? Presumably they're not constructed, or Cathay would just be flying everywhere in aerial black arks.
>>95916119Don't forget about them teaching the Nehekarans how to build pyramids!
>>95916011Well you can have a narrator have knowledge no one in universe could have but that doesn't mean the narrator is outside the universe, people do that plenty with stories set irl but that doesn't mean the narrative voice being used isn't from irl.
What I'm looking for is a narrator breaking the 4th wall in such a way that shows it's talking about whf as a fictional setting which would make the statements that it makes it authorial truth.
>>95915728I got myself a pig on my own
>>95915918It would:
1) Make the setting slighty more interesting
2) Make Cathay slighty more evil / bad
So no.
>>95916134>Well you can have a narrator have knowledge no one in universe could have but that doesn't mean the narrator is outside the universeYeah it does, how else would they have the knowledge?
>>95916134If a book said something like 'everyone in the world believes X, but no one knows it's actually Y', wouldn't that count as authorial? That statement isn't fallible. It's not coming from a character who might get something wrong.
We thinking the Empire might get cut for TOW 2.0? They haven't been given much spotlight in the lore, it's been more concentrated on Bretonnia, and there's really no need for two generic human factions if one is far superior.
>>95916086They gave Sigmar's hammer to the dwarves
>>95916185I know you're trolling, but that would make setting the game just before the Great War Against Chaos a strange choice.
Ogres got a fair few mentions. I'm confident that the big lads will return to us soon.
>>95916231Crazy that it was Xen Yang who first taught the ogres how to eat
>>95916256Kind of true with the summoning the great maw thing.
They left out Be'lakor's involvement...
>>95916305Too busy getting pelted by rocks
>>95916305That was just Xen Yang in a horned helmet.
Miao and Sigmar definitely hooked up.
When Sigmar said his job was done he went across the world's edge mountains and was never seen again.
>>95916318The dragussy was too good...
Ok, placing bets now: Will GW remember that the last baron of Marienburg was Paulus van der Maacht and he died in the Great War Against Chaos?
At rhe moment we've got young girlboss Elspeth Magritta XVIIIXV, but the war is still a few years off. The fact that she's not a van der Maacht is telling though.
>>95916326based on GWs earnings report in China yes
>>95916379No, they won't. I am kind of sad we didn't get a Manaan & Mercenaries Magritta list.
>>95916379Considering Lords of the Lance still called the King of Bretonnia Louen Leoncoeur, I don't think GW knows who rules what at any time and is pushing Cathay so hard because the dragons are all immortal and that makes it easier for them.
>>95916426There's probably an internal conflict within GW between just bringing back the old world before ET and concentrating on the supposed period of TOW.
>>95916405>>95916426I can't get over the fact that they can't be bothered to just check the wiki for this stuff. They don't have to open any books to do actual research or anything, just look at the timeline on your phone while you're taking a shit.
>>95916445Nah, probably just McNeil being a shit author.
>>95916445I wouldn't be surprised at all if they were setting up an alternate universe/timeline thing to go back to the era of Franz and skip the ET
Is the balloon $160 with the store discount or is that GW's price?
>>95916463presumably GW's price.
>>95915746I would stick with WFRP, even if I were to just stick to the core rulebook, which for 4e is badly formatted with some jank rules like Advantage and Channelling that were improved later it just a more interesting system than what presented in TOWRPG
Cathayโs great and all but here is a proper Kislev/chaos marauder army.
>>95916505>Tomb kings but fleshyvs
>Beastmen that are more man than beast.
>>95915460I hope that's what it turns out to be (read: retconned into) some day in the future. It will probably take something like the fall of the CCP first though, and yeah, good luck with that.
It would be funny to make future Cathay lore read roughly like the current one, but with a clear implication that the writer had a sword pointed to their back as they wrote.
>>95916505shame it's in a unique scale nobody else uses
Iโm convinced no one knows what a retcon means.
>>95916623Retroactive continuity.
Bet you guys wish you had embraced the Bear cavalry now...
>>95916639GW wouldn't let us embrace them because they insisted on pandering to the chinese first
>>95916652Maybe Russia shouldn't have sperged out and tried to conquer Ukraine.
>>95916652I think that's more to do with Russia invading Ukraine before China invades Taiwan.
If Iran and Israel goes nuclear does that increase or decrease the odds of Araby?
>>95915467For Marienburg I would give them an up-armoured, veteran version of free company militia called Marienburg Mariners
>>95916669But dont you see, China has to invade Taiwan to maximise celestial harmony
>>95916639I hope they release this year. My niece would love them.
>>95916639Bear cavalry was fine. Making half the faction ride them is what soured me on the idea. It should have remained a privilege for hardcore, accomplished Ursun devotees. Kislev was a fucking horse faction. The core of their armies were rotas of winged lancers and groups of ungol horsemen.
As it stands Kislev is kind of the anti-Cathay. Where Cathay has nice models and godawful lore wanked to the heavens, Kislev lore remains mostly the same and digestible, with recent chances to their religious institution being irrelevant for the time period of TOW, but with horrible aesthetic choices.
Seeing some of the adjustments TOW did to stuff like the grand cannon or the sky lantern, I hope to see the same for KIslev: removing the ice cubes from sleds, replacing the bear sleds for horses, changing the giant ice cub bear sled cannon for a normal cannon, etc.
>>95916669>If Iran and Israel goes nuclear does that increase or decrease the odds of Araby?Might delay any possible Chaos Dwarfs release.
>>95916738The bear-drawn sleds in total war are retarded but besides them there's one unit of war bear riders and then it's a mount for characters. Kislev still has more horse cavalry options. I don't think total war's shit balancing making bear riders spammable and meta will be transferred to the tabletop either.
>>95916505Conquest had such promise until they fucked up the scale.
>>95916738>boo hoo I want normal, grounded kislevthen go play warmaster chud.
this is TOW, and the point of TOW is to slowly push an ever increasing amount of silliness in to the setting until the WHFB holdouts finally accept AOS as their Lord and Savior.
>>95915444 (OP)I just read through the arcane journal
cathay fluff is repetitive fanfiction-tier slop
deep as a puddle, interesting as a looking at paint dry, and disrespectful to whoever was expecting any sort of answers or worldbuilding regarding this faction and its previous mentions
any sort of cautious optimism for the characterisation of the faction has been thrown to the ground and mercilessly stomped upon in the name of sensibility
The Cathayans fear the necromancer.
>>95916850Where can I read the leaks for the Cathay Journal?
Is Boris just supposed to run around the Chaos Wastes slapping Chaos Armies while they slap his minor settlements?
The book really presents Cathay in a good light.
My only hope is the 2nd Cathay arcane jounal actually bring the more "darker" side of Cathay.
Like they absolutely not mention Monkey king (except for that one item) or Monkey Warriors helping them in war an/or doing trouble in the Empire; or chaos cults in the big cities; or even pirates/Dark elves/Nippon attacking the east coast.
>>95916881The Cathayans fears the toadnado.
>>95916892Wrong thread buddy.
>>95915745"YOU KEEP DISRESPECTING THE PRINCE YOU'LL SLEEP WITH THE SIRENS!
PIGGALO IS A TILEAN HERO, END OF STORY!"
>>95916925I'm really fucked off by this, because I liked the stuff about Cathay that TWW3 suggested about it being a harmonious state from the outside, but with lost of internal corruption, the dragons being overall uncaring to individual humans and see them as tools to maintain order and the fact that the population is almost brainwashed into worshipping the Dragons.
Then again, maybe that was too on the nose for the Chinese overlords
>>95917043I liked the bit where it said - dwarves wonโt admit Cathayan gunpowder is better, but trust us, it is better.
>>95916885https://go file.io/d/5V9QRt
>>95917167>directly linking itRIP
have any pictures of the cathay sprues appeared yet? there is something i need to know before deciding to pull the trigger
>>95916925They were on to true kino with this illustration, the WFRP diplomat character, and Zhao Ming. They could have given every Cathay character badass Shang Tsung style heavy metal eyeliner. Removing this detail pisses me off more than anything else in the Cathay presentation.
>>95917250>the WFRP diplomat characterYou faggots were bitching about DEI or woke or whatever because she existed and her elite monk bodyguards were better at killing beastmen than state troopers, headcanoning her being a chaos cultist being the only saving grace.
>>95915513TOW RPG is for those who don'T know shit about the lores of different games and just want to larp as a warhammer character for an afternoon,
>>95915746There's a female Bretonnian knight and a female dwarf (with an ass ugly face) on the cover, it's already questionnable in terms of lore quality, the rules are abstract similar to Imperium Maledictum, with zones instead of distances in yards, special talents for careers (to be even more special), forced mechanics like contracts they claim everyone loved in testing, but that's like being given a sword and not hitting the first thing you see wiht it.
>>95916135Very Nice.
I obught one from GW, and got another one on ebay for 25$, minus the head spikes. The seller claimed it was a Chaos warhound Champion, hence the cheap price.
Yeah i'm thinking my GOAT drachenfels could defeat Xi Jing- I mean Xen Yang
>>95917643Nice Japanese cover.
And a 16 year old vampire woman can surely beat a mid-20,30s looking dragon lady.
>>95915967>game wide -1 to toughnessAh yes, daemons succumbing to the sickening and chaotic influence of warpstone.
>>95917051Where is the Kazakhstan equivalent located in the Old World? Where ever it is, I am from there and I hate women so much it's unreal.
>>95917702i could see a bit of fluff where instead of withering the daemons it overloads them and causes them to become unstable, making their connection to the mortal plane more tenuous
>>95917751that'd be the Ungol's i guess?
>>95915593>>95915599If I ever become the Ayetollah of Iran I am placing a Fatwa on Matt Ward don't forgive don't forget.
>>95917672The 16 year old vampire woman is the authors' super extra special waifu, and he's dropped the literal same character (with identical name and backstory and everything) into his own alt-hist setting after he stopped writing Black Library. If Genevieve can beat GW's IP lawyers by sheer horny author fiat, she can beat anything.
>>95915967This really should be a -1 toughness aura that weakens friendlies too.
does cathay have the harmony thing that they had in the game
>>95917643I really fucking like that helmet. I'd love to see a full body shot of that design.
Want to get into The Old World. Leaning towards Dorfs or Goats, but there's also a part of me that wants to go High Elves and take the lion pill. Anyway, my question is, how's the interfaction balance? Is there anything so busted I'll be refused games, is there anything so dogwater as to be unplayable?
His silence is deafening.
>>95917911Beastmen are shit to hobby with because the mold lines are thicker than a high elves cum stain. Dwarves are also a pain to paint, and probably the worst faction to play. High elves are generally fine hobby wise, and gameplay wise, but itโs fucking elves. Have some dignity.
>>95917919Who? Is this volund?
>>95917911Dorfs, Goats and HE all have tournament strong lists but none of them are broken. The only armies with potential to make broken lists currently are Bretonnia, Tomb Kings and Cathay. And even then you have to try with Brets and TK ( too early to tell for Cathay ). Any of your three choices clear your worries.
>>95917922>Dwarves are also a pain to paint,Dwarfs are easy as shit to paint and beast mouldlines are just as bad as most other old kits.

>>95917919It'll be great to see him get physically uncomfortable as someone's chinese anime waifu solos his entire army.
What the fuck is this Cathay lore. What a fucking jerkoff. Unless this turns out to be Cathay propaganda ( which I am 99% sure it won't ) it's disgusting how they jerk off the Fantasy chinese in this garbo fanfiction lore.
I'm getting the wood elf battalion. Are deepwood scouts or eternal guard stronger?
Gonna sell the men off so I wanna make it at least worth it for whomever takes them off my hands.
>>95917911there is a greater disparity between regular lists and tournament jank lists within any faction, than there is between two normal lists for any two factions.
by this, i mean there is a bigger difference between a standard dwarf army and 14 gyrocopters than there is between a standard dwarf army and a standard beasts army.
so if your intent is to actually play competitive events and care about balance and winrate, you need to be tuned in to the absolute nonsense jank lists that break the game over their knee because they are playing a fundamentally different game of warhammer to normal armies.
if your intent is just to play normal armies with a nice blend of troops, cavalry, artillery, characters and monsters, then the differences in faction balance are mostly trivial and wont much effect the game outside of a few of the unsupported legends armies.
>>95918076>which I am 99% sure it won'tI mean, isn't this pretty close to what happened to the Tau in 40k? People got mad about how clean and idealistic they were presented only for following editions to darken the fuck out of it. China just needs to pull a Russia in the following 1 to 2 years and then all bets are off.
>>95918076It is just GW being overcautious with new lore when dealing with Asian influence. Same thing happened with Tau and it took some years do grimdark them and same thing will happen with Cathay once they have established themselves as an army. Future releases will add more ambiguity and grimdark to lore.

Fuck it's like MESBG all over again.
>Miao gets bred by TRVE Sigmarites
Cathay bros, our response?
>>95918569Do you mean racism towards elves or from elves?
>>95918668That said it is not FOMO, so you might be fortunate and grab it on the release day next week.
>>95918668Or you can pay in installments via:
>Klarna>Affirm>Credee>Sezzle>Afterpay
>>95918519>>95918525Look on the bright side. Cathay selling out means the other Legacy Armies are guaranteed coming back.
>>95918324>wait a month for the restock>half the dwarf kits have been sold out for a yearlol. lmao. its over. specialist games is a joke, a scalpers playground. buy at 300% msrp on ebay or eat shit
>>95918751But I don't care about legacy factions. Mostly because their players are so noisy.
>>95918751I really wish I didnt sell my old vampire counts, the kits were such a fucking pain to put together, and I recall having to clean the mold lines after half painting the entire damn thing. I really dont want to go through with that again. Maybe I'll pick up demons or dark elves if they get anything new.
>>95918764what shit hole are you living in? they've been in stock here all year long.
>>95918751thats gonna present a big challenge because a huge portion of those armies ranges are still in age of sigmar, and i doubt they'd give up that many model ranges without a fight
>Miao killed her sister
Did Chaos really fool her or did she do it because Shiyama was the original favoured daughter?
>>95918773I imagine tow will also need to make new stuff for them to justify the transition to old world too.
Its also bad enough they can barely keep what they already have in stock...(thats in resin or metal).
>>95918751>>95918773Don't know about the rest, but shouldn't Daemons of Chaos be extremely easy to pull off? The entire range already double dips AoS and 40k, exactly what would be the problem in doing it again but with square bases?
>>959188081. lol no
2.40K is probably getting rid of demons. They arenโt even getting a codex this edition.
3. You have no fucking clue how scattered the demons range is. At least if weโre talking about the metals, and the forge world models.
Also itโs such a fucking small army if youโre monolegioned, itโs not even funny.
>>95918686I hear that to this day she has a tattoo of the twin-tailed comet on her right asscheek.
>>95918781Complete ignoramus here. Is there any reason Shiyama has such a japanese sounding name unlike literally everyone else in Cathay? A cursory search tells me that the name in chinese translates into random terms, while in Japanese it can mean something akin to "Cursed Mountain" or "Cursed Temple/Grave".
>>95918860No idea. My headcanon is that Nippon pre-Sundering used to be part of Cathay and Shiyama's home province so her name is in the local language.
>>95918618so I still have a chance
Shiyama lives. As the Nipponese empress.
However her palace is such a wonderland of art and human sex she doesn't actually govern jack shit and the country is in a perpetual sengoku jidai as a result with the daimyos paying her off to not turn into a God dragon and murder them.
>Cathay sells out instantly
>Skaventide still "selling fast"
Oh my, how fascinating.
>>95918773Iizardmen are mostly new models for AOS, they could easily pump out the older ones as with TOW branding
>>95918917hard to tell since we dont know how much was produced of both.
>>95918926Obviously they produced a morbillion Cathay boxes, gw should know this box would hold interest.
>>95918934I mean, I know stores that still can't sell off their copies of Dominion to this day.
Granted they refuse to lower the $300 price tag, so fuck 'em.
>>95918934sure, but its still save to assume that they would produce a lot more boxes for a "main system" like AoS then they would for Old World imo.
I like how Meow is the favored daughter trusted with everything because she's the only one who's not a complete fuck-up.
At most she just grinds some human's hips into mush every other day to relieve stress.
>not a fuck up
>is an extreme whore that puts khalifa to shame
>>95918965I think yuan bo is also one of the capable children.
I liked his campagn in TWW
>>95918926my FLGS sold all 50 skaventide boxes they ordered when that launched. for old world battalions they usually get an allotment of 2, and they are almost always in stock on the shelfs.
do with that what you will. i would not be surprised if more than 50% of the cathay box sales are aos players buying new cities or lumineth proxy armies
The basic cathayan infantry, horsemen and rocket launchers don't seem broken to me? Is the issue the special characters or the amount of buffs you can stack on them?
If anyone needs help selling their Cathay boxes in 3-4 months, Iโd be happy to buy it off of you for a measly 35% discount (maybe 50% if you fucked up gluing something wrong or lost a piece here or there)
>>95918686>after just over 9 months at the court of Sigmar, Miao Ying returned to Cathay
>>95919019No theyโre OK. The Shugengans and the cannons are pretty cracked.
>>95919019yeah, they are good, but dont look over the top to me.
miao ying might be bit too much but not using a special character in friendly games is one of the easiest things to do to lower the power level.
>>95918773Why not just allow them in both, is GW that afraid of brand confusion considering they're (supposedly) a miniature company and not a gaming one
>>95919057>give your entire army -3 move turn 1>donโt look over the top to me
>>95919065internal spreadsheet politics. 2 different departments cant show a sale for the same product, so they are not allowed to have the same product in multiple games, hence why all the new horus heresy vehicles and dreads were ripped away from 40k, beasts were ripped away from aos despite JUST getting a huge rules overhaul and new terrain and spells in the prior edition, its why they have separate kits for chaos warriors in each game
>>95919075i dont think those effects stack. i think the people who say they do are probably reading it wrong
>>95919075you mean +3 to my army or -3 to the enemies army?
and I was strictly speaking about the core units (warrios/lancers). havent looked to much at the general special rules so far.
>>95919057I think Miao is balanced by having less attacks than a lord+ridden dragon combo.
>>95919085Yeah just gotta. Ignore everything else too.
its fine that cathay is good. you dont want another gitmob situation
>>95919085okay, but I think her ability to turn units into celestial dragon guard for just 1 point per model is pretty nuts.
>>95919076I thought we left this in the 90s when Sears collapsed.
>>95915444 (OP)So are empire foot armies still dog shit? Havenโt paid attention in a while
>>95919097I think Cathay will toe the line as a gatekeeper army hitting some top tables for now and then become clearly the best army in the game when the second AJ hits and they get some better core choices.
>>95919103Whatโs the Empire?
>>95919065They are afraid to confuse themselves not the customer. I can see the low hanging fruit of Dark Elves coming back though. The real problem is that it would kill AoS, if they released Skaven, Lizzes and VC for ToW, because they are so popular in AoS, but not as far away evolved from their whfb roots as night goblins or StD. Imagine if they all got the BoC treatment and the OC-factions would have to carry AoS lmao.
>>95919113>lizardmen Iโm not using the old kroxigor. Fuck that.
>>95919102GW is from UK and they are decades behind rest of the western world in these kind of situation
>>95919039>>95919057Yeah that's good, interested in seeing what the 2nd wave has to offer for the Cathay roster. Never played any TWW games, do they get handgunners and monstrous infantry?
>>95919161they have short-range handgunner, bow-peasents, bomb-throwers and long-range sniper.
I dont think they have monstrous infantry. just smaller single unit monsters like the jade lion.
>>95918773Just like Night Goblins in TOW? Hasn't been a problem so far.
>>95918965>because she's the only one who's not a complete fuck-up.dude, she fucking killed her own older sister as an oopsie, you can't have a bigger fuck up than that
>>95919227So she died pre-vortex?
Damn the razorgor was bigger than I thought!
>>95919242Yes. The vortex was only closed thanks to the efforts of the dragons.
>>95919242yes
the problem is that as far as we knew she died before the other dragon brothers and sisters were born, going by the short story released for total war when the changeling went to trick and mock the jade dragon
>The daemonโs form shifted again, shedding some of its newly acquired stature and once again becoming female. She wore a porcelain mask divided into yin and yang, an aqueous luminescence shining through the pale skin beneath. Her hair flowed strangely, tumbling over her shoulders and down her back like water through the many stages of a river, and like the rivers of Cathay each strand had its own length, colour, and character.>Strangest of all were her eyes.>They were cold and blue and utterly dead.>Yuan Bo stumbled back in shock.>He had never met the first daughter of the Celestial Emperor and Moon Empress, for she had been already slain when Yuan Bo and his still-living siblings had first opened their eyes. It was said that she slept beneath the Dragon River, guiding the souls of the dead to the Ten Courts of Shyish under the stewardship of her Ancestral Monks.>But he knew her appearance from the peasantsโ fables.>Shiyama, the Spirit Dragon of the Underworld.>โIt should have been me,โ she snarled. โThe Celestial Court should have been mine, not yours.โ>Yuan Bo shook his head furiously.>Lies. All lies.while the arcane journal implies all the dragon children were already alive well before the catastrophe
the only way to mend the inconsistency is to assume that the dragon children were also mind-wiped about the life, and the exact causes of death, of the spirit dragon, not just the citizens
all this shit reads more and more like primarchs bullshit, I hate it
>>95919250that's one part I don't understand, the arcane journal wants to imply the dragons did something but only describes them fighting to the north, no ritual, no no closing of gates, no spells of banishment, unlike elves, dwarfs and slann
at best it can be argued that they occupied some demonic forces, giving necessary moments of respite for the other corners of the world?
>>95918686But Marienburg didn't exist at about year 1ic?
>>95919263it's probably like 10ic by the time miao ying got to the empire
>>95919255>โIt should have been me,
>>95919033>the true bloodline of Sigmar persists>... in CathayDamn can you even imagine the asshurt such a thing would cause.
>>95915758yeah, that's literally the only bit that's not fellating cathay through the roof.
Painted more rats this week.
>>95919281I've also switched to brush on varnish because sprays are too random.
>>95919276sigmar's bloodline is also present in the empire, it's just that he didn't want the position of emperor to be hereditary, so he didn't put attention to his children
Damn I thought the sensitivity consultants would just make sure there were no references to the opium wars or something like that, but Cathay reads like CCP propaganda. It's frankly disgusting to stoop to such a level when chinese people don't even have the money to consoom warhammer, even if they did they would just pirate it anyway like r*ssians
>>95919301>reads like propaganda.Yeah, it's shameless too
>>95919301Grand Cathay would never stoop to the level of violating international copyright law, the Grand Cathay Arcane Journal told me so!
>>95919268>I should be the one having constant human dick!
I mean how are Chinese people gonna play Tomb Kings? Skeletons there are banned.
>>95919330They're not actually banned, just desecration of the dead.
It's why Coco wasn't banned despite most of the cast in that movie being undead skeletons.
>>95919301what does the ccp have to do with a fictional country in a fantasy game?
>>95919333>just desecration of the deadisn't necromancy desecration of the dead in itself?
>>95919334Ask GW, they're the ones who hired a chinese sensitivity team to tell them to avoid grimdark.
>>95919334The parallels to serving the party and the state are obvious, as is the part about the "teacher" and "guide" (literally Xi Jinping and Xi Jinping Thought)

>>95918161Yes. And this is super obvious to anyone who's been around.
This thread is a daunting testament to white weakness. Just a living collection of the absolute most paper-thin, helpless men to ever exist in human history. The cocksuckingest tranny who ever lived did so with more grit and dignity than the people tearing their hair out in here.
>>95919360The problem is that it's obvious the sensitivity team (the CCP) as played a major role in deciding what the lore needs to be. It's a problem if any state does this, whether it's China or anyone else.
wonder why the Cathay AJ does not have an Epub version it's the only TOW book not to get one
>>95919374To state the obivous: it limits what creatives can do, which is never a good thing
>>95919360>there is a difference between appeasing a party and trying not to be racist and/or ignorant towards a group of peopleWhat's the difference? not appeasing the party's policy? because that's what they're objectively doing with the skulls things, it's not a cultural thing, it's a modern policy.
why yes I'm gonna paint her black
>>95919374any source that the CCP was involved?
>>95919387I have no desire to collect Cathay but I am tempted to get a box of dudes just so I can paint them black and post it on the r*ddit sub to see how they react
>>95918161>and it took some years do grimdark themthat's a meme from uninformed secondaries, the tau had mind control from day fucking one
not to mention the overall cleanliness of the faction was a point because they were meant to be the young, naive and unprepared contrast to the horrors of the galaxy, and to allow the imperium to act as the tyrannical power they're meant to be
cathay doesn't have a similar role, at all, the only contrast it creates is about just how better they're at everything than everyone else, who are clearly all retarded
>>95919382China is extremely superstitious nowadays because Mao wiped out many of their more religious traditions. It's both policy and simply the culture of mainland China.

>>95919390why would a chinese sensitivity team not have the sensitivity of china's modern policies at heart?

>>95919408Thanks for the pointer man, I didnt notice
>>95919402Because a "Chinese Sensitivity Team" in Nottingham is probably composed of westernized expats and academics, not political operatives.
Clear yourself of the lazy, weak racism ("Evil Chinese agents did this!!") and blame GW, who are the ones actually responsible.
>>95919396no, it's not, it might have been the culture 60 years ago, but not now, especially not amongst fiction consumers
>>95919396Yeah, they put out phony academic research about the efficiency of traditional chinese medicine so they don't have to ban chewing dried tiger dicks.
>>95919301China has Warhammer stores and most of modern china are doing well economically.
The burgers obsessing over CCP are just showing how brainwashed they really are.
>>95919416That can't be it. China has a censorship committee on anything foreign, if you want to sell your games/movies whatever you're gonna have to go through censorship, that includes changing the whole thing before it's approved. See Hollywood.
>>95919423How successful is Warhammer in Mainland China?
A lot of westerners focus on Japan as the main Asian market for Warhammer, so I never hear places like Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and what their Wargame let alone Warhammer scenes looks like
>>95919416>and blame GWI am blaming both GW and the sensitivity team, you goddamn fucking retard.
GW for hiring them and listening to them, and the team for spewing what's clearly bullshit a mile away

https://www.warhammer-community.com/en-gb/articles/1ovkvf4r/old-world-almanack-building-the-celestial-empire-of-grand-cathay/
>Rob: Importantly, this is a Warhammer take on China. Warhammer is a lot of things, but there are simple tropes that unite it: itโs skulls, itโs death, itโs grimness. But for cultural reasons, many of these signifiers donโt align with a Chinese influence design language, so we had to think about which other levers we could pull to make sure it was Warhammer.
>Owen: Both Creative Assembly and a Chinese sensitivity team were very helpful, providing guidance documents to ensure we understood China and didnโt make the wrong move. There are various symbols to avoid, and referencing skulls or gruesome body horror as part of the Grand Cathay visual language were ones we were keen to avoid.
>Mark: There are certain styles of clothing and hair which signify darker periods in Chinese history. We had to be respectful of those, alongside these other considerations.
>Owen: There are dynasties which are truly celebrated in China, we made sure to utilise some of the aesthetics from the eras that they spanned.
>JTY: China is very proud of its heritage, and we were happy to oblige.
Freedom and creativity die in the name of not being even remotely daring and bold.
>>95919445Because a state interfering is a dangerous precedent and puts a bad taste in my mouth. I don't think it's as bad as I make it out to be, but it's still bad.
And yes, whataboutists love to do whataboutism. DEI propaganda is just as bad, the difference is that DEI can be fought whereas trying to fight the chinese government, well, good luck with that.
>>95919445>cathay is still warhammer thoughno, because it's worldbuilt like shit, it's not warhammer, it's a different thing stapled onto warhammer wearing the nametag of what could have actually been a warhammer faction.
What I dont understand is that in Total War, Cathay has clear flaws. And all their fluff is from GW directly. So did it all get retconned, or is it coming later, post The Great War of Chaos? I want to like Cathay but the AJ has soured me on them.
>>95919439How can you be so dumb that you actually imagine GW writing "dark Cathay," putting it in front of the diabolical sensitivity spies, then getting told to alter it?
Dark Cathay was never written. GW's current bad soulless writers, absolute wraiths of what once was, made the fluff bad to begin with.
>>95919463so its warhammer since most factions had shit world building at the beginning.
>>95919475You don't mention how skulls and grimdark are inherent parts of warhammer if not because you were as a matter of fact considering of using them at one point, before getting corrected
stop pretending the chinese team is innocent in this trainwreck
>>95919480Wrong.
The warhammer world materialized with consistent history, themes and aesthetics in a relatively short amount of time when it actually began to take itself as something more solid than a vague justification for throwing all sorts of model ranges on the same table.
GW has had 7 years to write cathay now.
I canโt get over taught the dwarfs how to use gunpowder and better gunpowder than the dwarfs. So we now have three tiers of gunpowder:
>high tier - cathay
>mid tier - dwarfs
>bottom of the barrel dogshit tier - empire
Have to wake up early, go to the flgs. See if they have pre-orders available.
>>95919438Compared to us? Quite small proportionately, but they exist. When I went to Shanghai I saw many games being played. As is in the west, it is niche but humorously, the western nerds were big advocates for Warhammer, like a religion. Well, more marketing than religion, but they'd play, garner interest and get locals involved.
>>95919496>I canโt get over taught the dwarfs how to use gunpowderit doesn't say that
>>95919485Everybody, including the dumbasses in this thread and their fathers, already knew about the skulls thing. That is Complaining About China in My Media 101. Of course it's what they mention in the interview, and of course they knew about it before needing to consult a team of dastardly Chinese.
If it seemed like a new and surprising thing to you... did you consider that you're just a dumb dullard unaware?
>>95919493no, the first few editions most factions were just "random historic country in fantasy land" without any coherency, since they just wanted people to use their citadel miniatures.
>remember I have a couple heroes from a Kensei Kickstarter years ago
Neat, I just have to get the battalion.
>>95919509Yes it does lol
>>95919518Post the screenshot
>>95919485I don't think Skulls are necessary for something to be Warhammer.
Factions like Dwarfs, HE, WE, etc don't have them or at least have different focus points for their art design.
Cathay, however, should have been Grimdark and you can do Grimdark without Skulls China itself is producing plenty of things that would probably be considered Grimdark in the west, so I'm not sure why Gw was so squeamish about it.
>the sexy immortal dragon lady that likes human dick is a good person actually and has genuine care for others
And yet you hate her because she can cast four bullshit magic missiles a turn and is unkillable.
>>95919416Bro there are literal commissars that make sure Chinese university students abroad keep in line and petition to have anything remotely negative about China removed from their courses. >>95919515Yes, and then the warhammer world materialized with consistent history, themes and aesthetics in a relatively short amount of time when it actually began to take itself as something more solid than a vague justification for throwing all sorts of model ranges on the same table.
There was no gradual development from the 1st edition to the 4th edition, in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gw didn't care much about worldbuilding, then it sat down and worldbuilt everything in a matter of a few years and by the time 4th and its armybooks were out the warhammer world was recognisably what we know today. You disingenuous idiot.
>>95919543So it doesn't say they taught them gunpowder and you just hallucinated it

Is there any reason you're not using newer plastic Skaven minis?
Or if you want to avoid GW, have you seen Punga Miniatures' Ratmen? So many good alts for Gutter/Night Runners
>>95919512>more projections and dishonesty If they knew everything they needed not to touch they wouldn't need to hire a sensitivity team, the very fact they're crediting them, explicitly and directly is because they fucking hired them and they contributed in the first place.
Meanwhile you're arguing on the bafflingly illogical side of this team having done nothing at all, for no reason other than being mindlessly argumentative towards criticism moved to this shit, because you have your delusions about how only the evil racist boogeyman could possibly criticise how they did cathay.

>>95919533Oh right, he ditched being emperor to live with her. God damn.
>>95919557so it took years for the factions lores to form properly. gotcha. So Cathay is pretty warhammer then, since its lore has now years to be built on.
>>95919578The Empire is the only human faction?

>>95919591Barbarians north of the Barrier Idols are not human.
>>95919578If dwarves and elves don't have skulls, how do they keep their faces and hair in place?
I don't get people being upset about the Cathay lore. It's just obviously propaganda meant to fellate the army in question. Army books have been doing this for decades. I remember the Brettonnian book where all the knights are presented as shining examples of virtue and they win every battle, and the warriors of chaos book describing even regular chaos warriors as pretty much invincible when put up against the weaklings of the south. Cathay being fellated in their dedicated book just seems like par for the course.
You want Cathay to be darker and more fractured? Just write it into the fluff for yourdudes or base a campaign on it. An orc invasion from the west has caused some ambitious lord to take advantage of his neighboring lord's issues and instead of sending troops to help his 'ally', he just has his army occupy the now undefended lands in the east of the province, so the defenders return after beating back the orcs only to find their lands taken by other Cathayans. Bam, conflict.
>high elves are bullshit powerful and their kingdoms are peaceful and magical except for the ones that border the dark elves

>Cathay is bullshit powerful and it's kingdom is largely peaceful albeit led by immortal boomers, except for the border regions that fend off invasions

>>95919534All mentions of gunpowder in the AC here.
>>95919587>so it took years for the factions lores to form properly. No, reread the post, it took a shorter amount of time between the world not being worldbuilt and the state of the warhammer world as I and others (but clearly not you) appreciate it, while gw has had seven years to write cathay and this is everything they managed to come up with: absolutely nothing.
>>95919573The fact they did this for Cathay and not for Kislev is really funny.
>>95919607well, some people just have an irrational hate for china and anything resembling it.

To continune on the Bret example, it does show various Bret heroes dying, but only in the Arthurian example where they either do it as total badasses (Gilles killing a wyvern even while impaled on a ballista bolt iirc) or it's presented as a deeply tragic tale (like in Landuin's case). The plight of the peasantry is downplayed and even in some cases presented as preferable to life in the empire because the knights are just that cool as lords and protectors.

I think the thing is a lot of these older books had little fiction pieces to sketch out the faction, which were from a subjective PoV. โCathay is the greatest and most powerful nation ever to existโ comes across a lot better from an in-character Cathayan Magistrate than from an objective authorial voice explaining how they actually did everything you thought your faction did, but better.

That would have been good, cathay is not that, it's not good.
>>95919805That is one aspect for sure, but not solely. You are right it is a source of depth but not solely. Though what I find most concerning, not mentioned here, we now have a potential reason Sigmar went east at the end of his life. Dragonussy too good
>>95919812Yeah it would have been so easy to just do it like that. What's weird is a lot of this shit could have been avoided by just... saying less. They didn't have to explicitly state that everyone is happy and there is no conflict. In fact, GW's policy used to be the opposite - never explicitly state that something doesn't exist or that it never happens. That way GW and players can add their own exceptions.

>>95920432>and alchemiststhey have added a magical item that turns one of your heroes into an alchemist, it's possible they did this specifically because they don't plan on having a model for one
same argument for why they made the monkey king into a magical item and the dragon guards into an update for jade warriors, instead a proper unit profile.
>>95920467The Monkey King would be cool but either people would complain he is OP, lore accurate, or UP, not lore accurate.
>>95920477I don't mind it not getting a model, I always found the concept out of place and too on the nose.

>Cathay beat Ogres by turn 3
Ok, nice
>>95920510Legacy armies don't really count.
Cathay should beat them turn 1.
>>95920510That's bullshit, no way would America lose that quickly.
>>95920510The constant influencer cry that these really arenโt overpowered, honest is telling.
>>95920451>miao ying>zhao ming>lion statue>sentinel>sky lantern >compass/drum>shugengan>general >warriors>lancers >gunners>paesants>crowmen>artillery 14 plastic kits, roughly as many as the full model ranges like empire and high elves
they can even potentially throw 2 sprues of crossbows in exchange of the 2 sprues of halberds and command group (already conveniently all put on separate sprues from the sprue of main bodies) for an online-only alternative box of jade warriors and they would add another ranged option too, the kit even comes with holstered swords
>>95920524Yeah, but Ogres are actually a pretty strong army.
>>95920418>Miao Ying>Shugengan lord (also technically a magistrate but I won't count it)>Gate Master>jade warriors >jade lancers>Grand cannon/rocket battery dual kit>Sky lantern>SentinelTotal: 8
If I were to guess, assuming the same unit limit:
>Zhao Ming>Alchemist or Astromancer (probably alchemist given Zhao)>Peasant long spear>Peasant archers>Jade crossbows>Crane gunners/hail gunner dual kit>Jade lion/jet lion dual kit>War drum/Compass dual kit
I have an extra 30 ungors and gors because I didnโt read the product description closely enough.
What should I do with all these dudes? Sell them on ebay for cheap or give them away at my lgs?
>>95920550>14 plastic kitsalso evenly distributed into two waves and two arcane journals, since miao ying isn't getting released until then
>>95920043So people will just take 50% core and 50% characters now. I don't think that's a very good idea. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if there were more core infantry and cav on the table in most battles, but this seems short-sighted. It's not like bring forced to take more core will make core units better, it'll just give the things that mulch core units easily more targets.
>empire fags crying in the mountain miniatures stream about cathay
Amusing
>>95920556buy orc chariots to replace the charioteers with beastmen and marauder horsemen to convert them into centigors
also a box or two of chaos spawn to make spawns and warped gors
>>95920298You live in a cloud of unreality.
Like 20% of all models sold go to build paint shelf collectors.
Another 10% to people that will never open the boxes.
Probably 15% of these specific sales are for AoS proxies. Throw in another 2% for weirdos who are going to do something with them in Necromunda or Horus Heresy lol.
End result being that at least 40% of purchases do not need the book in any way.
>>95920565>So people will just take 50% core and 50% characters now. nope, 50% core, as many cannons as possible and only then the biggest monster available and a lvl4 wizard for dispels.
>>95920467>bound spell>PL3>for plague of rustWhat the actual fuck, that's insane.
>>95920585that's nothing, for 20pts your sentinel gets to do this
>>95920577I stand corrected, but that's not better.
>>95920565I mean if nothing else Cathay shows they can make an army where every unit is cool and does a particular job well. They just need to revise existing factions with that in mind. The Shugenga with S10 -4AP multiple wounds d3 attacks and Spectral Doppelgรคnger is pretty clearly undercosted, but that is something fixable with points. Itโs not like he is inherently broken or too weak to play.
>>95920585You can put it on the unit champion of the jade lancers too. Though I might be tempted to take a cheap gatekeeper to caddy it or have it on a balloon magistrate.
>>95920574Wouldn't that indicate that the wave has even more kits then? If you assume 40% don't need the book then the book selling out but the models not selling out should mean that there are a fuck load of models (or they didn't produce a lot of books which would be odd)
>>95920596The multiple cannons multiple wind blasts multiple plague of rusts multiple level 4 wizards is going to be tough.
>>95920598how much do you think it should cost?
>cringe lore written by Wumao trolls indistinguishable from CCP propaganda
>ridiculously OP units
>Minis that look like they come from a Disney cartoon
>Exorbitantly priced, even for GW standards (100+ bucks for a Sky Lantern kek)
If you collect Cathay I know to immediately clock you as a faggot who should be ridiculed and ideally bullied into playing Age of Sigmar instead
>>95920596Alright, so Cathay gets to cast one of the best spells in the game as a bound spell twice per turn for a mere 55 points. I don't like it. I hate it. Chaos has to pay 40 points to cast The Summoning at PL2 and the chinamen get to cast Plague of Rust at PL3 for either 5 less or half as many points. Lame! Gay!
>>95920596>>95920467shit like these should be one use only or PL1 or cost twice as much at the very least
>>95920617Nobody cares, empire npc.
>>95920611Probably about 60-100 points more than it does. The staff might as well be a 100pt magic item, it makes no difference for the innate defensive tech of the shug and reduces them to a 4/6 chance of rolling doppelgรคnger from a 5/6. And shugengans are just generally undercosted.
>>95920618>twice per turnthey can fit 2 such sentinels in the 500pts of rare choices.
>>95920617Hey....hey you.
State Troops
>>95920627>>95920635I don't collect Empire, cope.
>>95920618Donโt worry, the Cathayan special lore (one of the two they get anyway) has a better magic missile than The Summoning anyway.

>>95919398It actually makes perfect sense when you think about it; Jade Warriors are elite troops given quality provisions, equipment, and training. On the other hand, Empire state troops are rarely afforded more than what they strictly need, and the quality of training and upkeep can vary considerably; while in-garrison soldiers of larger cities are soldiers by profession who benefit from daily duty, drills, and requisition, you also have the soldiers of petty lords and border settlements, who are little more than peasants who, after basic training, drill one day a week, and shovel pig shit the other seven.
My point is, the average Jade Warrior benefits from better nutrition, hygiene, and training than the average state troop, so it follows that they're a bit taller on average.
A Sigmarite elector count and BOTET discord shill professor was teaching a class on Sigmar, known barbarian.
โBefore the class begins, you must get on your knees and worship Karl Franz and accept that the Empire is the most highly-evolved nation the Warhammer world has ever known, even greater than Grand Cathay!โ
At this moment, a brave, filial, harmonious, Dragon-Blooded Longma rider who had served 1500 tours of duty on the Great Bastion and understood the necessity of Dragon rule and fully supported all military decision made by the Celestial Dragon Emperor stood up and held up a map.
โWhich is the greatest nation of Man, laowai?โ
The arrogant professor smirked quite Disharmoniously and smugly replied โSigmar's Empire, obviously.โ
โWrong. Itโs Grand Cathay. If Sugmar's Empire was, as you say, the greatestโฆ then it should be the largest most populous nation by now!โ
The professor was visibly shaken, and dropped his chalk and copy of Testaments of Sigmar. He stormed out of the room crying those Imperial crocodile tears. The same tears imperials cry for the โoppressedโ Cathay peasants (who today live in such luxury that most own plows) when they jealously try to claw justly earned wealth from the deserving Shugengan aristocracy.
The students stood up and all shouted "Wan Sui!" in unison and all declared their unyielding loyalty to Grand Cathay and accepted the Dragon Emperor as their lord and savior. Miao Ying herself flew into the room and gave everyone present an Iron Hail gun and drafted all of them to serve in the Great Bastion. Everyone kowtowed before her several times, and the Moon Empress herself showed up and saw to it that every chaos cultist in the nation suffered a fiery painful death!
The professor lost his tenure and was fired the next day. He tried going back west to his backwards constantly civil warring "Empire" but was eaten by Ogres while trying to cross the Ivory Road

>>95920635I don't understand this reference. Are state troops infamously bad hobby wise or something?
>>95920674In the game, they are appallingly bad compared to other core choices and now are completely outclassed by jade warriors, another human core foot unit.
>>95920665>It actually makes perfect sense when you think about itWell actually it doesn't. Jade Warriors are supposed to be unisex for example, but in no world are men and women physically the same based on nutrition.
>>95920644and then they can add one other jade sentinel as a special choice if the army just happens to be led by the insanely convenient shugengan lord
>lvl4 ligma with monkebonk: 359>2 ogreloaded cannons: 495>3 jade sentinels 750>500 points of warriors and lancers >1939pts (25pts of magical allowance left to the shugengan, just to buy a small magical shield to give it a 2+ out of combat)you don't even need another hero for the alchemical mask since you can shove that onto a jade lancer champion anyway
the only downside is that you're not getting a third ogre loaded cannon or a bunch of sky lanterns instead
>>95920551Youโre as retarded as a ogre
>>95919797They were gone after 5th edition
>>95920710I honestly think you canโt go far wrong with two ligmas with the 70 point plus magic weapons and 5 illusion spells. The monkey one will comfortably kill anything in the game if he gets doppelgรคnger off, even the most pimped dragonlord, and the other will at least go blow for blow with it at half the price. Only the killing blow bret duke scares them and he frightens everything.
>>95920710They canโt take magical shields because they cannot take ordinary shields.

Khuresh when?
The sky balloonโs reserve bonus stacks so if you like you could fill out your core with one huge jade lancers unit and just keep them off the board until turn 5 as points denial.
>>95920762They're based on leaked info from GW China
>>95920738If second rank of infantry can now give supporting attacks, is the age of cavalry dead?

>>95920771>GW chinaI remember there TWWH3 leaks being utterly bullshit.
>>95920763Considering the amount of 3d designs they're making, it wouldn't surprise me if they made a step further and planned printable miniatures for their faction

>>95920774Wouldnโt that just mean jade lancers could attack in 3 ranks?
>>95920806I think that's just sorta required for the unit to be put in WH3.
>>95919743why would there need to be dark cathay, they're already fighting chaos in the north, Nippon and the Goryeo in the east, orks and goblins in the south and west
>>95920820>the GoryeoI don't think they exist in the Warhammer world
>>95920820>GoryeoI feel like if we get any real lore on that area it's probably going to just be an extension of hobgoblin territory. Alternatively the map calls the mountains in the south of not!Korea the eldritch heights so maybe fishman live there.
>>95920774No, cavalry still had a role to play in 8th.
>>95920278>The body horror restriction is so lame.>Give me a character who is a malformed shugengan.fuck off, you already have factions for that. I want an orderly neat army
>>95920779>why? so they fit into the setting
the dragons wouldn't be benevolent for no reason and would have interests that don't align with the well being of humans, if not even interests that at the end of the day would see the destruction of humans, since they would view them as one other invasive force the old ones unleashed on their world, changing it from what they preferred
the citizens wouldn't be unanimously fine with not having any say on governance, or with the cost of resources and manpower for the grand scale projects of their distant inhuman ruler, and the oppression of dissent and religions would create underground communities and cults
manipulating magic with the great compass would have drawbacks and consequences, if not for cathay then for the surrounding regions that would then become problems against cathay
hybridisation with another species wouldn't go without errors and flaws and the creation, uplifting, maintenance and favour of these bloodlines would foster competition and intercine conflicts for power
The abaloons and sentinels look fucking stupid on the board
>>95920885damn the Hell pit Abominations look tiny in comparison
>>95920885both should have been way smaller to begin with
>>95920880>the dragons wouldn't be benevolent for no reason and would have interests that don't align with the well being of humansI mean this is already true, the Dragon of Cathay wants to undo the Old Ones moving the planet closer to the sun which could borderline eradicate all life on the planet. >>95920920don't go for the female head as the ponytail is likely to snapped off

>>95920901>I mean this is already trueno, it's not, word of god says they're benevolent and caring and protective of humans, it's not one interpretation, it's not what the citizens believe, it's how they're factually said to be with no nuance or ambiguity whatsoever and for no reason.
There's no example nor even one inkling of implication that whatever they do or might do could go against the interests of their subjects.
>you just sound madYes, I'm mad GW missed ALL of the low hanging fruits for the world building of the faction and presented the most shallow shit possible.
It doesn't work, it doesn't fit warhammer, and I'm not whatever boogeyman you desperately want me to be because that's the only potential angle of defence for the literal worst case scenario for a new faction:
without depth, without details, with no genuine attempt to make it work within the confines, themes and metaphysics of the previously established world, and instead it's nothing but the presentation of not!primarchs, an attempt to cater to a foreign market, and overpowered rules to bump the sales.
Of course I'm mad, noone sane would defend this.
The only saving grace in this travesty is that the miniatures range from passable to good with a few gems in the crews.
>>95920963You will get one game with each person, and they will very likely not agree to play against cathay again after the novelty wears off and it becomes obvious what miserable CBT it is

>>95921505>>95921503All that for a model that, with the "one color and drybrush" scheme most players will give it, looks like cheap action figure or mantic model. If the same sculpt was 40% the size it would look really good! Just a little smaller than the giant! Which is giant by the way, the giant is quite big!
>>95921372That explains the WS7.
>>95921475This makes no logical sense. The current downsides of the army result from its limited roster: they have no cheap wizards on foot, everything they want to play in special and rare is a decent chunk of change (despite being clearly undercosted in a couple of cases) and theyโre stuck taking 500pts of core that while it has some flexibility really only plays in a couple of ways (it is funny jade warriors come in at a 5 minimum so you could run the anti-flying banner for a cool 80-ish points or so the same thing with champions and spirit lanterns and run 5-6 min size terror-causing units as your core).
Once the roster builds out they will be able to better double down on things like having strong wizards or building a gun line. The current core will cease to be an albatross around around their neck and their flexibility will increase. Without direct points or star nerfs as more units are added to the roster they will only become stronger than they currently are.
>>95921477Yeah apparently the feet are awful.
>>95921406you could get that by bashing jade warriors arms, helmets and weapons onto peasant bodies

>>95921539>Once the roster builds out they will be able to better double down on thingsAssuming it stays the same and the core isn't upped to 50%. The army exists to sell the range, which at this point is mostly centerpieces.
>>95921477why? it's practically monopose too
Thinking about the Spirit Lantern being unlimited is very funny because the gate guy heroes and magistrates and strategists are all quite cheap. You could run a cav-based Cathayan army with like:
>shuggie causing terror
>double hero balloons causing terror
>gatekeeper on horse causing terror
>core is 4 units of jade lancers causing terror
Just getting cheap terror on any hero or champion is pretty good.
>>95921564Nope, the AJ confirms the dragemperor sincerely loves humans, would never choose to them harm and his seclusion is only to uncover further methods of destroying chaos.
>>95921581I think this is one example of where the army was intentionally pushed. This item probably originally gave fear. The sky lantern probably originally had to buy its feigned flight and fire and fly. The cannon probably had to buy its movement debuff as special ammunition. But they did a last pass like they did to debuff the legacy armies to buff this new one.
>>95921572Core going to 50% would be one of the most stupid decisions the TOW team could make so itโll probably happen.
>>95921555that would look very bad

>>95921503Average modern GW sprue design. An absolutely tedious nightmare to assemble. Going back to old models was such a breath of fresh air after working with modern 40k/AoS assemblies, I almost forgot how fun it was to build models.
>>95921619core units are generally kinda useless in the current game so It would make the one big monster you bring even more absurdly powerful and any army that can take good units in core obcene
a better solution would be to get rid of all the "you may take x as core" rules and then to buff infantry so it has a role outside undead
>>95921655other Cathay models like the Jade Warriors and even the Sky Balloon look a lot easier to build
>>95921655I love third party kits because they all have sane design, gw is the only doing the stupid high tech puzzle kits. Sure it looks good, but by god it's unfun, and it doesn't look THAT much better. I can tolerate it on stuff like newer space marines where the body is 3 puzzle peices, but the rest of the kit is sensible, but shit like new orks where the hole model is a jigsaw (powerklaw in 3 parts spread across 3 sprues on one of the newer kits btw) is just pain, let alone anything bigger.
>>95921655For some reason HH and Legion Imperialis are immune to that. The sprues of the kit I build were fantastic, you basically could assemble everything while barely looking at the instructions and with everything grouped together very easily
>>95921717Mechanicum robots are more tedious to build than any 40k unit.
>>95921674I honestly don't really know how you fix infantry in TOW without going back to 8e's deathblocks. You can buff their CR to make head-on confrontations risky, and that will work for stuff like state troops and spearmen, but it still leaves no room for elite infantry in the game.
>>95921717space marines in general are easier to make sensible kits for because of how they go to together, the nu-gw style is most obnoxious on organic models
>>95921477>called it the worst model he has ever had to put together. And he has done titans and other forgeworld giants.Worst GW kits are things like some Necron characters. Extremely small and spindly and with a dozen pieces for a single articulation.

Although to be fair, at that time the only Empre city to have been established for more than a human lifetime is Reikdorf/Altdorf. This is what happens when your factions that theoretically change over time (even if the Empire turns from tribes to landsknechts overnight) interact with factions whose leaders are older than the gods and invented all their shit on day 1 and did nothing for the next 6k years.

>>95921960>in the hope of overcoming his fearful magic?not really, the isolationism was due to losing the one ally they had found
the magic was being studied not specifically to deal with nagash but in general to deal with potential threats
chaos seems to be the main enemy in mind
it would be a neat plot hook if nagash was now to get written as a personal enemy of the dragon emperor, insofar as to make the conquest of cathay and the claiming of the dragon's power a fundamental part of his future rise and ascension to godhood, instead of the end times plot

>>95922099oh there go the dice in the US
>>95922007I agree. The thing is, various authors have managed to fuck up (positively) the borders of the Empire in the middle of its existence. The Drive to the Frontiers, with the Empire expanded into Bretonnia and the Border Princes, the pre-Gospodar extent of Ostland and Ostermark into Kislev, the Ungol migrations, the pre-Turmoil electors etc. But Sigmar's era is the only historical period some of the GW writers even consider, so the setting is bookended by being basically identical.
You'll note that the only events that actually change the Empire's structure in a meaningful way appeared very early on. The Age of Three Emperors, Magnus the Pious, the creation of the Moot and Marienburg's independence were all in the timeline from the start. Solland's destruction appeared in the 4th edition army book at the same time as the big elector streamlining. I don't know when Drakwald first appeared - possibly the WD article on runefangs around early 4e.
This is why it's important to get the broad stroke of change in Cathay early, but they've deliberately done the opposite of that.

>>95922063>Think it'll work?no, too many cores kills the game as it did back in 8th, even worse now that the basic soldiers of some armies have aged 10 more years
the core and special separation has become completely outdated with how many weirder things there are that gw wants you to field and that the players also want to field because they're cool
but between these extreme units and the basic footsoldiers there are what were once the special enough units that nowadays are taken less and less or taken only when some rule allows them to be taken as core
which is why I believe all special units that are just simple infantries, simple cavalries and simple chariots should be moved to core with the caveat that you can't have more core-specials than you have core-core units.
>>95922134gw (and fantasy authors in general) have a bad habit of dividing a setting into "now" and the "past" (a particular important period of time where literally everything now was set up) and largely ignore everything in between, fantasy is actually LESS bad in that regard than 40k with the horus heresy or something like warcraft with the era of azhara
