I came across this video: https://youtu.be/ZzkSrwXtdUg?t=361
It has a homemade black acrylic wash recipe that seems to produce pretty good results.
Recipe: Secret Sauce Black Wash Recipe
25 Drops Monument Hobbies Glaze Medium
5 Drops Liquitex Flow improver
1 Drop Liquitex Carbon Black Ink

How do people come up with these kinds of recipes to make the hobby better?
And has anybody tried this recipe to confirm it is as good as shown?

Literally trying to reinvent the wheel. At this point you can as well just mix little black oil paint and few drops of white spirit, if you desperately need to mix your own wash. What's wrong with Dark Tone, Nuln Oil or whatever you have at hand?

I think its perfect to be honest.
I'll admit I'm a retard at math and most likely a lot more subjects, so I'm not sure how I can calculate how to scale up these numbers to something like 60ml dropper bottles I have or 18ml.
Can I get some help on that, please?

Making your own washes to suit your needs is great, as evidenced by your preference for oils and spirits. Couldn't pay me to fuck around with turps/white spirits in my hobby area, nor pre-varnishing for washes like a scale modeler, but you do you. Personal preference is a good thing.

Now that is an amazing source, anon. Thank you so much.
It just blows my mind how people come up with these recipes and how these DIY things just manage to outperform what companies put out.
Maybe in vidya terms it is like how the modding community always makes the game better than what is originally put out. Is it the same effect?

Once again thank you for linking that.

Both work, and so does Xpress by Vallejo.
It comes down to what minis, and how you prime them mostly. Then you decide which paints. A red from one brand, a brown from a different brand, and maybe a blue from a 3rd brand might work best for whatever you want.
All those paint ranges have some excellent shades included, and some that aren't that great, but often its also a matter of taste.
Anonymous No.95922514 >>95922571
>>95922349
I would recommend SP over contrast, personally. It is trickier to work with because it's much thinner (do not think them unless you are making a wash out of them) and the capillary effect can cause the paint to run to other areas, so there is a learning curve for using them. The BIGGEST plus about them is that they all handle exactly the same. Every single paint, no matter which one you pick, will flow, cover, and apply exactly like every other paint in the line. So, once you do get the hang of them you can use all of them equally well.

Contrasts, on the other hand, are wildly inconsistent with every god damn paint in the line being it's own unique little pot. Thin? Thick? Pools well? Pools poorly? Runs? Doesn't run? White medium sticks more? Less? You will not know until you use the fucking things. You got about 50% of them that don't handle flat areas well, including Ultramarine. SP handles flat areas fine once you understand that you should use a large enough brush to apply minimal strokes and not push it around much (again a learning curve) but there isn't much you can do to make Contrasts that don't like flat areas work on flat areas.

There are other one coat paints out there but I only got experience with Vallejo outside Contrasts and SP. Vallejo is too washed out outside their intense line and the pallet range is too small to recommend as a result.

If you want really good results? Pass on all of them, honestly. Just get acrylics and learn techniques to make good mini paint jobs the traditional way. The one coat stuff is just about killing gray hordes to a "good enough" standard and bringing them above that is gonna take the same amount work and involve acrylics anyway.

Thanks! The gold recipe I came up with is most likely unnecessarily convoluted.

>brown basecoat
>ap emperor gold drybrush (any other dark gold will do, or might even skip this part)
>make a mix with gsw gold pigments + vallejo gold + vallejo metal varnish + brown ink, drybrush that
>coat everything with dark brown oil paint, wait a few hours
>dab it away with sponge+white spirits, leaving it in the recesses etc
>carefully retouch the most exposed areas and edges with a mix of gsw gold pigments + vallejo gold + vallejo metal varnish

The gold pigments mix is very shiny, which is somewhat hard to properly capture with a picture, and really makes the armour pop. Vinny v showcased their use in one of his older videos if you want to know more, my recipe for the mix is basically the same

Just making sure he knows what they are good for. They are fantastic for horde killing. Prime a mini, one coat of the colors you want in applicable areas, hit it with a wash, done. It is fantastic for crushing board games with a lot of minis like a CMON title or HeroQuest and such, or if you just want to knock out an army the day before a game where you will be using the same paint scheme on all the minis.

A lot of people think that one coat stuff is a good "tool" to be used along side traditional painting techniques to get great results and, from experience, I outright disagree. For his purpose of horde slaying? They are great. Outside of that? Do NOT waste your money as they are not going to be worth a piss outside that intended use. I really try to stress that so people do not think they can just use them like regular paints in the future when they suck dick with traditional painting methods.

Yes, liquitex matte medium is more of a satin. Use ultra matte for flat washes. You use distilled water because tap water has loads of chemicals and or minerals in it. It costs like a 2 dollars for a gallon at the grocery.
No, it's not a varnish. It's a fluid acrylic medium, it won't dry as hard as varnishes do.
You can use the medium/water/flowaid mix to do fun stuff mixed with dry pigments too.

I'd say, fix all of them, one after another. Then prime the whole lot at once.
Then you separate them into small "squads" of 3-10 miniatures, depending on how many you are comfortable with and paint them. For me, the sweet spot is 6 or 7 if it's guardsmen type troops, and 4-5 if it's bigger stuff. But I know some people do batches of 20 and think that's the best way to do it. And for them, it might be right.

Why prime everything at once? I like to have a box of primed and ready for paint minis next to my desks so I don't need to prime something first whenever I have time to paint which makes it able to ignore the weather outside

I feel like it would be very fun so I have been looking into pic rel. The new AP paints have been working out well for me. I doubt any of you would buy somethign like this but I'm curious about creating my own set number of paints for a project.

If I was to buy pic rel then what I'm paying for most of the palette selection being done and formulated for me, like the "orc skin" or "zombie horde" or "ww2 pacific" paint sets that some companies market.

Also I'm not sure which of the two is best. i paint a lot of AoS Nurgle and Orcs/goblins but I also print individual minis or dabble in fun side projects from time to time.

Got a lawyer. Basically the situation is as follows.
>Social Security and Disability Determination Services were pretty notorious about having an almost constant hiring freeze
>The result was the average employee having around 15 years of service with the old workers weighing down that average a lot
>The workload was staggering with them constantly having to do more with less
>Covid hits
>Old staff didn't want to take the mandated shot and didn't want to get sick either, so they just straight up retire all at once
>Now the average for work experience is around five years
>Workload gets insane due to staff reduction
>The departments implement work from home practices
>They HAVE to hire new staff and DEI hiring is in full effect by a bunch of HR Karens that infest government
>Result is the majority of new hires are dullards. Who also have at home training with no one really showing them how shit really works. Given the "old staff" is still kinda fresh they wouldn't have been very helpful anyway.
>Government loads them down with a massive backlog
>New hires have a fuck huge turnover rate for those that do good work because of burnout
>Left with dregs who barely function with screaming kids, loud movies, and shit in the background when you do talk to them because they don't give a shit about the job
>They just rubber stamp "denied" on everything because they would have to justify approvals and that's extra work
>Result, every step takes 2-3 years to advance and pretty much the entire department is full of idiots with zero work ethic
>Government just tells them to work harder
>They don't
>Government won't spend money to fix the issue. Won't institute office work because over 50% of staff will just quit if they do.

It's a cluster fuck. Even lawyers are just telling people "You are gonna be fucked for years with no recourse".

Because those color codes (in better case) come from manufacturers, each takes photos of these paints under different light. And that's the better case; some manufacturers go full retard and will give you the code of paint from the manufacturing process but will never bother to update the code taken from the actual paint irl (there are differences). As a result, plenty of websites combine these codes more or less randomly, and some particularly idiotic literally pick the code from some photo of a mini and never bother to go any further.

Being let down by these shitty websites repeatedly was one of the reasons why I bought Stahly's tools and shared them here. Anyway, here is the comparison tool: https://files.catbox.moe/t2lwgz.pdf

>how do you make your dudes so dark yet so bright
Well, I think the photo setup helps the most in that sense kek. (photo setup = 2 pieces of black cardboard + desk lamp + galaxy s8 camera)

That aside I do try to make things dark and gritty but really push on colours vibrancy at the same time, I don't like the more typical grimdarkβ„’ approach of just relying mainly on washes/enamels etc to make the minis desaturated, somber and dirty. In this case I simply tried to make some edges and more exposed parts of the armour super shiny and intense to provide a nice contrast to the darker areas.

Also here's a couple pics of some more details

Wouldn't this technically not matter if the flow aid and ultra matte medium I plan to get will make the paint stain the miniature a lot less than it normally would while shading recessed and raised details?

An opaque pigment will still affect colour more than a transparent one and imparts it's own hue on the surface you're painting.
Think of it this way, with a transparent pigment you can mainly darken whereas with an opaque one you can lighten the underlying colour. You can make washes from both but the outcomes are different.

Tldr, yes you're overthinking it. Try to enjoy the experimentation as well.

Also over the years I used a full box of white milliput and black milliput, no issues, black was my favorite because of how hard it is (no pun intended), right now I'm trying out the "classic" one that is brown/yellow, I think it's less interesting for models, too rough looking.

There's only one kit with "proper" jump pack equipment* and Mk X Tacticus Armour. The only way to make a ten-man squad is to take two identical five man squads. If you don't convert them at least a little bit, then you'll have two of each guy leaping off the exact same busted concrete ruin jutting up from the base. I grabbed some bitz from the OOP Firstborn Assault Squad, converted one guy to be running on the ground, and even used a piece of bark I got from a Texas Live Oak to make all ten models distinctive.

It lessens the effect a little bit, but it makes me wish even more that GW would sell jumping smoke trails like the ones CGL (and legions of ladz with 3D printers out there) makes for Battletech.

* = Yes, you could put jump packs on bog-standard Intercessors, but Mk X Tacticus models with jump packs trade their extra hip armour for boot-mounted thrusters and webbing on the thighs for carrying extra grenades and magazines.

My dirt base is lifting off the base after the glue dried. This happened to me before but I assumed it was because I had watered down the school glue and it contracted too much. This time I just slathered the whole top of the base in glue and threw the dirt on, shook off the excess, and wiped the rim. Slather pva with a few drops of water onto base, pour basing materials on it, shake of excess, let dry, drop a 50/50 water and isopropyl mix onto the basing material to break surface tension, drop watered downed pva onto the base so that spreads over all the material.

I am losing my mind trying to glue a resin mini's hand. It's a GW style arm + bit of hand and rest of hand grabbing the shaft of the weapon and the surface is simply too small for super glue to work there. Any tips? I fear it might even be too small for pinning.
What do you guys do when something just does not want to fucking glue together?

i would also pin it

I don't think I can pin it, my drill (I use it for drilling bolter heads so you get an idea of the size) would just destroy everything I'm afraid.
What about putting a bit of putty to hold it together?

Anonymous No.95945669

Baking soda reacts chemically with cyanoacrylate ("super") glue to quickly form a hard plastic-like substance. It's not the cleanest, but you can file or sand it down later. It's good for filling tiny gaps or in situations where you need your super glue to dry before your fingers get tired of holding the parts together.
Anonymous No.95945676
>>95945602
nta but its a catalyst that makes the superglue reaction happen almost instantly, and adds a shit load of grit into the join and surface area so its strong as hell. Try it not on a model first because it's pretty unsightly at the join if you smother it in soda.

small paperclips may be thin enough, sewing pins maybe, however brass rods are the usual hobby supply for pining you can get them in various sizes, you can also buy welding rods of apropiate size wich are cheaper, personaly i use copper wire salvaged from motors and transfomers

I dunno if you mean glazing yellow or if it's a paint called yellow glaze, but if you want to glaze, you need to do a dozen microscopic coats. The thinner it is, the smoother the transition is.

In addition to what hte other anons are suggesting, look up "florist's wire". It's very thin and extremely cheap - like, under $5 for 300 yards - and you can use it for a bunch of stuff. Sculpting and tree armatures, reinforcing plaster casts, even pinning. It gets stiffer if you twist 2-3 strands together.

I want to glaze the model after highlighting with nurgling green, base coated with plaguebearer flesh contrast and zenithal primed with wraith bone over deathguard green.
I want the yellow to help the green pop a bit.

How do you guys transport your minis? I'm looking for a case I can take on the train and on flights (probably inside a larger checked luggage bag).

Is foam going to fuck up the paint and bend all the plastic spears while airport staff drop kick my luggage onto the conveyer belt? Are magnets the only way? How much did you guys pay for yours, any recs?

Not the right thread, but I don't want to make one.

Got a little more detail work done while it was too hot to do anything else. This feels like the limit of my current ability. There's still a bit to finish (the sword hilt and sigil, the missing pauldron, and maybe some more highlights on the backpack), but this is close to what he'll look like when I'm done.
What could I do to improve from here? What's the best and worst parts?

They sold both metal and plastic backpacks. Originally the metal blisters came with metal packs. You're more likely to see a plastic pack these days because more people bought shitloads of RTB-01. There are other, rarer backpacks like the Medic and Radio pack as well.

GW cases are a bit expensive but also sturdy as hell. The foam inserts that come with them are good unless your minis have a ton of thin spikey bits sticking in all directions i.e. dark eldar. It's also easy to fit a lock/chain into it by drilling two holes.

unless you want to get into custom expensive stuff look for something like this, the foam is precut into 'pixels' that you can break off to make the general shape or your models, it's a destructive process so the shape you break off is the one you get, you can't later restore it to make another one
they usually have a thin full layer of foam at the bottom, the pixel matrix and another layer on the lid

picrel is from aliexpress

I buy sterilite/nationally made plastic containers from the grocery store and buy 1" foam rolls from Amazon or a craft store. I cut the foam to fit and layer foam on models on foam. My average container cost is sub 10 bucks. If you want it cheaper you can use cardboard boxes.
