What's a good TTRPG system for HEMA autism? I'd like rules for stuff the like mordhau pic related, and maybe even Ending Him Rightly if I'm feeling particularly meme-y. I get the feeling that I'm not going to like anything that's out there, so if anyone has any suggestions for Crunchy Game Design For Dummies I'd appreciate that too.

Riddle of Steel, Song of Swords

You probably expected this, but the only thing I can actually recommend is GURPS Martial Arts. It's got you covered for autism, that's for sure.

I'd never fucking use this, personally, but this is basically the last word on melee combat crunch.

I actually had an idea for a HEMA-themed war game, but it'd be expensive and probably take a long time to play. I call it Arms & The Man. It's based around posable action figures rather than regular minis.

I liked Song of Swords, but the rules are pretty patchy in several places.

I have heard good things about Riddle of Steel, only online though, and have never heard of Song of Swords. Should I pirate them, or are they made by sentient humans that deserve my money.

I've heard...mixed things about GURPS and have never actually taken the plunge into reading any of it. Assuming I like it, where would you suggest finding an online group? I can't imagine convincing anywhere in my area to play anyting except DND5e or PF2e.

Wish I could help you there, Anon. It can't hurt to try recruiting in your usual circles, who knows, you might convince someone who's looking for the exact same niche. I just roped my previous players into trying the game, but they're used to giving new systems a shot.

I don't think the guys who made Riddle of Steel even exist anymore. I think you can only get that stuff used. As for Song of Swords, it's Riddle of Steel but upgraded by autists into the ultimate HEMAtism game ever. The combat is even more detailed and autistic, but some of the mechanics are a bit unusual.

There's also Blade of The Iron Throne, another take on RoS but more Sword & Sorcery-ish and heroic, and also Sword & Scoundrel, another take on RoS with Burning Wheel elements mixed in.

They all sort of work. Pick whatever seems best. I prefer RoS myself.

Fuck it, here's what I've got so far:
>use real armor and weapon designs from world history
>joints similar to those Japanese Revoltech figures
>characters have action points for each round, heavier armor and weapons impose an upkeep cost
>posing figures in different stances affects the actions they take and how resistant they are to certain attacks
>reference abilities from historical combat manuals and martial arts schools for character abilities, fighting style proficiency a big part of character creation
>accessories like banners and cloth tabbards/surcoats/etc with various heraldry could have morale-related effects or different factions having passive abilities, like French knights lose less AP with heavy armor but take more damage from arrows
