Decades

Old world is too rules heavy for most new people, and if James changes that then they ruin it for the actual fans of the game.
Also killing AoS would drive away those who have invested in AoS, I for one would not switch to old world if it were the only option.
Besides AoS is much easier to learn and does very well for itself in comparison to anything other than 40k.

Roll Models was a perfect example of "Great Art, bad writing" It had better art than probably any other AoS comic that has ever existed, which is the only reason you still get reposts and edits of it to this day. Ignoring all the troll talk, realistically speaking Cathay was a lightning in a bottle release for TOW. A brand new, very popular army that hadn't been done in Warhammer before is not something the Specialist Team can just put out on repeat to replicate the success.

What are they realistically going to drop next as a new army, Kislev? Dogs of War? Araby? (lol) All considerably less hype than Cathay, plus there's a limit to how many quasi-historical human armies they can put out before people start to lose interest. Imagine the state of TOW in 10 years if half the armies in the game are human armies.

Also, does the US have so many Chinese or how come it's pretty much the only place that sells out. Who buys all the cathay shit? UK shops, even the ones with the largest discount of 20 to 25% still have stock despite small initial allocations.

thats exactly my point though. fantasy ended up in a death spiral because they werent adding new things for people to buy, and the only things that ever came out were refreshes of kits they already owned which frankly didnt look much better because sculpting technology stagnated between like 1995-2010. warmachine actually adopted zbrush way before GW in like 2007ish, which is why their 2nd edition models ended up being lightyears better than GWs models at the time, and their business model of modular releases and just straight up adding new units to the roster (which created its own problems with skew bloat later on) meant that they actually started to compete against GW.

anyways, GW was too conservative with the fantasy setting, treating it like a historical, frozen in time and unwilling or unable to add new factions and new elements to the game, the existing player base wasnt buying the refreshes, and it feels like by 2010 they really just gave up on it. some new editions came out but you still had armies sporting codexes that were printed 10 years prior in some cases.

all that to say, if old world makes the mistake (which it doesnt look like they're doing) of just sitting on their laurels and vending those old kits no one wants, it will die the same death whfb did before it. but if they can keep pulling cathays/kislevs/nippons etc out of their asses, it stands a chance.

Honestly, the baffling thing is GWs limited effort with TOW. In an age of throwaway UW, Warcry and Commemoratives kits they only really have Cathay, Bone Dragon, knights and lord on hippogryph. I'm really underwhelmed by what should've been mostly a refresh of WHF with bespoke kits

It's also nice to not have to worry about tactics much since I score them by just playing the game.

Ghb 1 got stale quick, my local group still played plenty of games and tournaments but battle tactics were shit and list building was stale and a lot of people went from having 2 or 3 armies in rotation to playing just 1 and waiting for battlescrolls. I think the three things are when a game has a really slow release schedule:

1) There's not a lot to get excited for if you already have a complete army
2) There's not a lot that's going to shift the play experience from where it is right now
3) If you're in a bad spot, there's little hope for relief for you army

I did appreciate everyone getting new options for their army in the month long countdown recently. But whoever is writing rules for AoS 4e, despite having the most freedom of any edition of AoS to write fun and interesting rules, seems to default 90% of the time to "roll a 3+ so you model can suck its own dick". So like even when you're getting some new shit 9/10 chance it doesn't move the needle or even fun to play. I don't really know when this shift happened: it felt like up through 3e armies still got interesting and powerful abilities. Sylvaneth were a blast to play even when they were in the gutter in 3e. Sylvaneth in 4e are miserable.

I used to think slaanesh was a bit tacky. I know that's the point but I never found it appealing. However the are really starting to grow on me. Myrmidesh painbringers and glutos are starting to grow on me. Seekers are really cool too with their "ironing board with legs" profile and little anteater tongues. Their daemons are 'aight, but their previous codex cover is one of the best I've seen for AoS.

It's not sold out on the 20% discount webstores in the UK. Not even with a 20% discount it sold through the small allocation of about 40 battalion boxes a particular and popular shop had. It's successful but not overly so. Yeah at least stormcast are limited to edition launch boxes + accompanying models. I think outside of the first edition vanguard introduction they haven't ever gotten stuff in the middle of an edition (besides underworlds/warcry shit). My heart bleeds for xenos players.

Also doesn't help that, imo, stormcast seem to have a little more variety to them. Marines these days are really all just the same primaris body with some random bits thrown on them, and maybe the occasional vehicle. I still don't really like stormcast but they seem to be somewhat more varied.

To all the Ironjawz-bros ITT, how do you guys paint these fuckers? I see some lists where people run like 30 or 40 ardboyz. Usually when I batch paint there comes a point where it becomes fun but so far it's been a real slog, even with contrast paint.

I still need to fix a bunch of errors after I apply the contrast, paint and drybrush the helmets, then wash the yellow parts with dark red then brown, then drybrush the yellow, then drybrush the black lightly, then varnish.

Was my first mistake choose black and yellow? Should I just pick a monochrome scheme?

It's the same thing I have criticised with votann, dwarf designs work when they have beards or beards analogs, female dwarfs can work the moment their hair becomes the analog for beards on the silhouette and color placement, but the votann gave up on beards to make the heads modular and posable (which is fine, but not that vital) and also gave up beard analogs like tubes or cables or grills in a misguided attempt to make the designs unisex, that's a big mistake.
Like it would be a mistake if kharadrons didn't have fake beards on their helmets.
