I hate this trend of putting new model releases as the artwork for the army book. Almost by definition these models will be fringe specialists, exotics or rarer troops. I don't need to be reminded of the GW release schedule every time I look at the fucking rules, the book should reflect what the army actually looks like.

The worst is that the artists clearly don't care and don't have time to finish the art either. GW likely pays them poorly and tells them to shit out some bullshit image of one of the models because who fucking cares when the book will be out of print in a year when the next edition churn happens. The old books had kino art because GW wasn't as corpo yet, the guys at the top wanted cool ass art so they hired guys to take their time to make it. The editions had no cycle or quarterly profit margin bullshit to keep up with, the game and aesthetic was fun because the guys at the studio found it fun also. GWs biggest downfall is ultimately that all the hobbyists who used to run the show got replaced by suits

Same deal with this Slaanesh one. Yes this is the new Myrmidon front-and-center or whatever, but he's also wiggling his spiked club like a giant dick, there's a procession in the background and there's two Slaaneshi chaos warriors in front of him clearly up to no good. You can do a current model cover and make it thematic to the faction.

Chaos is probably easier because you just need to go all-in on one vibe, but even this soulblight one is better. The new vampire lord is the centrepiece but he's surrounded by thousands of undead, he has this creepy little undead dog at his side hinting at a human connection, he looks ethereal and is staring sort of beyond the horizon giving it an inhuman feel at the same time. You can do model art and not have it suck as long as the artist is good.

These are very solid, but I really do feel that the models all being recognizable products degrades the work from a vision of fantasy from the artist's mind that can inspire you get creative to sterile plastic advert. When I look at these aos peices, yes, there's a ton I like artistically, the way the armor is done on that central figure in the slannesh one is super cool, but as I look in the background what do I see? Anything that incites the imagination? No, I just see "oh theres that model, there's that, oh theres that." And it doesn't transport me to this fantasy world it's trying to sell, it just is a codex miniature photography photo rendered over by an artist in spirit.

Something like pic related on the other hand, is elevated, not degraded the longer you look at it, each of the characters being a potentially inspiring little bit of the fantasy world that draws you into imagining your own potential project, which really, is the goal of the hobby, to make /yourdudes/, not to buy the Grimfang Bloodmaster because it's so cool.
