Mechs that can't get hot is a bitch move, most of the time (I make an exception for the Summoner). If your mech isn't comfy pushing it's heat to secure a kill, then it's not able to use its full potential. You want to be able to hit 4, 7, 9, 12, etc. Those penalties aren't a big deal if you've removed your immediate threats from existence.

Marauder 3R. I enjoy the running->standing heat cycle you can use to avoid the movement penalty. Another good include would be the Vulture, or many Warhammer variants (yes, I am going to shoot all the guns).

I have mixed feelings about this. I thought MW5 was finally done with DLC. No more starting new campaigns and careers. I'll just enjoy the 1 I'm in for once. I guess not.
I'm definitely getting it though and will be playing around in it. I'm taking this as a sign that they realize Mercs is more in line with what people want than Clans; in terms of gameplay mechanics and such.

The 4D as is can do some wonky bracket firing, I've used it once and I found that if you do a 2-1-2 with the PPCs standing still, or use a LL and PPC if you're moving, and then switch to the LL inside 5 hexes you can get it to kinda work without having insane to penalties every turn forever.
If it had 4 LL with 19 heat sinks, you could kinda do something similar, but I would honestly rather have some more armor.

I mean realistically the best thing is to drop one of the PPCs entirely and use the tonnage for heat sinks and armor, which likely happened a number of times in universe even if we never got a specific model for that. And it runs the risk of triggering both the hates-asymmetrical-mechs guy and the can't-tell-left-from-right guy.

Since clearly machine gun ammo is the most efficient damage-to-ton ratio, well over three times as much as LRM ammo. Did they just never think of it?

Its not really going to add anything really new or interesting to the game except "lel clan mechs" and once fags have farmed the tech its going to be super lame and boring.

There's cope saying they'll be adding new mechs but its all going to lazily remodelled existing assets, like what they did with the Thor II, Gauntlet and now the leaked Shad IIC. This annoys me to no end as although there are some models PGI produced I hate there's also a few I kinda like and would have loved to see their take on some of the insanity that is the TRO 3055 designs.

Software developers purposefully write shitty and bloated software to make people buy better hardware so that the developers personal investments pay off.
They focus on one aspect (like graphics for videogames) to make there software appear better to the masses but just like in physical manufacture, obsolescence and corner cutting are the industry standards.
No business anywhere for any market exists to provide customers with good product, all businesses exist only to profit their owners and shareholders by whatever means is easiest, cheapest and fastest.

Just noticed something about this PIG DLC coming out for MW5M. Know nobody truly gives a fuck about Mason but thought it was worth pointing out.
Supposed to continue his story but he'll be what in his mid 50's at the time of the Clans invading? Timeline is being extended to 3057 so he'll be in his 60's by then?
Sounds like the PIG were too cheap to come up with a new main character and want the player to play as the geriatric fusiliers?

IS Battle and IS Command lances are all solid mechs everyone has available to them. The AGOAC box is the same way although theyre more likely to found amongst some factions than others. Mechs in the Comstar packs are pretty much exclusive to Comstar and rarely seen anywhere else until after the Clans invade. If youre curious about a mech go get MegaMek and try it in that. The Kell Hound striker pack is one of the most solid picks the Nightsky is fantastic.

Also dont mix IS and Clans it just fucks you on BV.

>Is there a mech recommendation guide for retards like me?

BT is a relatively forgiving game, and every Mech has variants that are decent. Also, proxies are completely accepted!

Buying minis on what you think looks best is 100% legit.

Other than that, I think people tend to recommend lists based on faction, not viability. You want the best Mech 80% of the time? Just load up on Awesomes or Stormcrow Primes. But BT is a game about having fun and trying new shit out. The lance you bought is perfectly fine to start out with. Play, try different variants, start to figure out how you like to play and what kinds of Mechs you like.

You can run any mechs you want. What you can or can not put in your own force is a self imposed fluff restriction, feel free to proxy in a bunch of screamers.
What should and should not be used in games is decided by players at the table, there is no hard rule that says you can't use something.
Players often play a "3025" game, which almost universally means mechs available in the inner sphere at that time, no clantech and such, etc. People sometimes run games set in other timeframes, sometimes they don't apply any restrictions.
Canon variants are assumed, you should always ask before running your mechs as custom variants in games.
And of course models are more for the enjoyment of the players involved, if you want to use a bunch of mechs you don't have or are effectively unobtainable as actual models, ask the people you're playing with and just use any little item that will fit on a hex as a proxy. Try to mark the facing of the object, maybe even make a little cardboard standee with a self made doodle of the mech you want to use.

If you really hell bent on setting a faction theme then Comstar Level II forcepacks can be used to represent virtually any faction in the game and cover from Star League era all the way into ilclan.
You don't have to use said models to represent exact variants by the way so you can use them as you see fit.

Davions tend to use a lot of greens in units with red white and blue highlights. So basically just paint the French flag over olive drab as a decal.
Think the only one that isn't a variation of above or french flag pajamas are the Robinsons which was dark red with yellow highlights iirc?

>No wonder these retards lost.
When? In the initial Clan Invasion? They lost because of 3 reasons; logistics, holding back, and honoring their word. If they fought like the IS and didn't go for even fights, i.e., using their warships with abandon, they would have completely massacred the IS and been unstoppable. A force without warships cannot defeat a force with warships, simple as. By the KDR, it's absurd how much damage the clans did to the IS. If the clans decided not to honor the results of Tukkayid and say, "No. We changed our mind and are going to keep fighting anyway." then the IS is royally fucked. This can be evidenced by the IS never fully recovering from the Clan Invasion and the clans becoming a constant IS presence afterwards.
>No wonder these retards lost.
Again, when? As of the Illclan era, they haven't lost at all. They're very much the winners in fact.

Really though, gloating about clanners "losing" is rich. Comstar actively assisted the clans during the invasion. Then they turn around and tell you that the clanners are the real enemy all along and you gleefully gobble up the propaganda being fed to you; that Comstar are your benevolent saviors. Lies fed to you by the very same people that were actively killing you, and you believe them. Talk about some major Stockholm Syndrome. Comstar would have been so pleased to have people like you lapping up their lies.

If you double-tap the UAC and fire the rear-mounted lasers, the Ebon Jaguar A can build 34 heat on an alpha strike without even moving. Love it to bits though - the temptation to slam the big red button always looms, and itโ€™s awesome to let it rip at a target and watch like 80 damage slam into something.

Bracket-firing setups that actually make sense are also just more fun to play than โ€œheat neutral fire everything every turnโ€ designs anyway.

I also have the 25th anniversary box that I dont include in the count because theyre awful and dont get brought out unless we really need an opfor.

I haven't deep dove any clan lore but the way they seem to describe enhanced imagining, it seems the damage is done even if you remove the implants and that its possibly degenerative; removing the implants doesn't reverse or even halt the mental decline.

If they could repair faulty implants surely they wouldn't do it for every solohma reject, but we would have descriptions of clan pilots having their corrected or removed which is simply not the case.

Unfortunately leaving your resin unpainted or just clearcoated is no good, you need an Opaque barrier to UV light once you've cured them as continued exposure to UV will overcure and eventually lead to cracking, might take years though.

Alpha Strike is a better game for lore-agnostic point based tournaments, and therefore is a better game than Classic BT. Tournament whales buy product, and selling product is the point. Who cares what a bunch of grogs in someone's house, who haven't bought minis or a rulebook in 10 years, decide to play? They don't pay money, so they don't get our attention.

Yes. It means your movement and the evasion you generate from it actually matters. Your heat and managing it matters too. Go too hi-tech in Battletech and you might as well just stop stand still and shoot and forget about managing heat when you sink over 40 or even 50 heat a turn.

I'm being passive aggressive because anon is either baiting (You)s or full blown retarded. I'm leading towards the former, because it is truly masterful bait to respond to an actual issue (the fact that 5 piloting will result in more failed PSRs and that 4 gunners can't hit shit, meaning that they will close to kicking range, prompting more PSR's) with "bro, just load your dice and you won't fail the PSR's" is a masterclass in ragebait that's so elegant in it's execution it would be admirable if it wasn't so retarded.

To rerail the discussion, >>95961447 shows very well why you should bump up piloting. A lance of mechs at 6k can very easily all be veterans, if not elites if you're good with your picks. And an anon had said previously that 6K is pitifully small. So either you're playing turret tech with 4/5 Atlas's who can't hit shit, or this is bait.

Trying to build an all assault lance for only 6k is actually tough in introtech. You have to pick the shitty assaults, so you end up with like a Victor, fast Longbow, one of the crimes against Awesomes, and then a Beemer or Banshee or something with one of the above getting a single skill upgrade.

If you're slow at painting it's okay to just prime up and give your mechs a base coat, but I don't like when people do less for anything other than models they literally just got out of a box. When you at least basecoat them there's substantially less confusion as to which ones are yours on the table which can be really helpful for PUGs and just generally makes games more interesting to look at.

If you or your friends are short on time, a liberal drybrush and/or dip in tone can give table-ready results in a fraction of the time of more fussy painting. Try suggesting it to them if you can; it's not a crime to put grey plastic on a table, but it is a shame.

It's also not interesting if they can't hit anything and can't stand up. Bumping the stats all around by one or even two just means you don't have empty turns where you do nothing but shuffle around and the mech that tripped on rough ground with no damage can actually get back up.
Why is it hard for an undamaged mech to stand up anyway? How is that even a check? You'd think that's just a macro, you've got all your limbs, hit the get back up button.

Pilotless mechs are not titanfall machines, they are super early robots that can barely stand.
There is no get back up button, mechs rely on the pilot's sense of balance, expertise and connection to his machine to recover after a fall. The most advanced thing a mech can do without a pilot is walk slowly over even terrain with a mechtech's supervision.
Just as people often stumble and fall after a disorienting fall, a pilot and his mech are likely to as well.

idk, I feel like if you're just on your front or your back you really should just have a "put your arms out and raise yourself up" autosystem, especially when it's using the pilots balance. Like walking is more complex than that and both require it to understand the position its body parts are in and where the ground is. Are these guys having to QWOP control their limbs around to try and get up? I could understand damage messing this up and now you have to manually account for that but who the fuck is making a giant robot on legs that can't easily stand back up?
They created a problem they didn't have a solution for yet and now the mechs are beating themselves to death against the ground because they slipped on the pavement just outside the mechbay.

You're standing up in combat conditions with the intention of immediately taking off at nearly the same speed you'd be moving if you hadn't fallen at all. I'm not saying and didn't say for when there's no pilot at all, I mean automated as in the mech will perform the motions as a macro as opposed to manually trying to control the limbs to perform an action. The same way the mech knows where to place its feet when walking while piloted. That's automated, the pilot isn't manually controlling each foot and where they go for every step. I assume. Bit silly if they were.

The mech's movements are linked to the pilot's mind, there is very little automation and it cannot navigate at all on its own if it's linked to a pilot. The most a mech's computer does is acclimate to the pilot to better work with his personal quirks, it will eventually "predict" the movements of its pilot and function almost like an extension of his subconscious.
Something as invasive as the mech getting back up on its own would not work if it's linked to a pilot, even if it could do that.
The general movements link to his brain function, the gyro links to his sense of balance, it's all tethered to and reliant on him. A mech will simply collapse if its pilot loses consciousness.

Untrue. A pilot failing a consciousness roll does not result in an automatic fall unless the circumstances would require a PSR as well. It turns the chance of a fall into an automatic fall, but an AC/2 to the cockpit that knocks out the pilot of a Locust running 12 hexes won't result in it falling, it'll be immobile.

It means it either has no standardized variants or the in-universe writer of the TRO didn't feel the need to include them, possibly because they're obscure, garbage even by succ standards or the changes are too minor to waste pagespace on (ooh, this one uses a Federated Autoloader/10-B instead of a Federated Autocannon and Maximilian 105 armor instead of Starshield).

The vindicator is a great mech, good armor, plentiful heat sinks, and will do about the same damage as the Enforcer. My only complaint about it is the suboptimal weapon brackets compared to the dead simple Enforcer. The short range on your PPC is the min range on the LRM-5, and the short range on the medium laser is the min range on the PPC. A variant that exchanged the lrm-5 for an SRM-4 would be ideal for me. Having no min range on the ac/10 and large laser, plus being able to throw out damage in chunks, makes the Enforcer a great team player when paired with a Javelin.

Sadly all BA needs it's own ride, and only mechs can score. This is why I was asking for cheap-in-BV mech recommendations.
My bad for leaving that out of my initial question

On that note I also just remembered 3050 mix tech 'C' variants exist. Could those be reasonably fielded by CJF in 3058?

Locust C spam might be quite entertaining. You can get 7 of them with some points left over for 5000 BV.
You could also have 5 Kit Fox V's which could be potentially hilarious for 5000 BV.

At that BV and for that many units, youโ€™re probably bringing at least 2 points of elementals. Or running 4 bottom-of-the-barrel clan lights. You could probably do a couple of mediums or budget heavies and some toads to ride in on them and come in under 5k. Maybe AP Gauss elementals if you have the spare BV.

>>95965373
Problem with this force is that if you have to actually walk to the hill, thereโ€™s a good chance you just lose on points to anything that can get there at a decent speed. Elementals are slow without carriers, if the map is big enough they might not get into hill distance until turn 4 or 5, so if thereโ€™s a turn limit or a point limit you could just end up playing from behind at the outset of the match.

5K is waaaay to small for Clan Invasion, especially if you want to play Clanners. See if you can't beat your opponent(s) up to 8K. Cheap mechs and Clan mechs are mutually exclusive.

If you can, I'd bring this list. Run onto the point with the Kit Fox and Stormcrow to score points till the Thor can get on point. When you think you've got a decent grip on the hill, use the Kit Fox with the Elementals in tow to threaten the backshots and swarming.

Inspired by this and other input, sadly the 5kbv is fixed but now that AIV is in BMM I should be able to convince them to give it a go. Fire moth for spotting and as BA taxi, Viper for more backstabbing and BA taxi, and Kit fox for the firepower.

Rush the objective, deposit BA, and alternate turns running on and off the hill for good tmm, whilst the BA deals with any threat the lights can't deal with.

Thank you all for your help so far, any more input is still very much welcome!

No. Ideally you start at Introtech, and play several games there, possibly not even with full lances, as there are more than enough rules to learn and master in the base game before you move up to more complex tech levels. Everything you learn there scales up, and there can sometimes be far to much to remember and take into account when you play at those tech levels, especially when you're just starting out. I know the swansong of high tech games in FCCW is alluring, but you can pull quite few shenanigans even at that tech level. The more you play it, the more you appreciate the balance of 3025. But I'm not your dad, you can play how you want. Have fun, whatever you do.

That looks like a really fun lance with solid picks, my one suggestion is have something beefier. The mediums and light are all very good mechs that rely on speed or jump jets to stay alive and in that tech level there are a lot of things that counter it hard. Your heavy, while just a fun batshit design is probably the most likely to die in a violent explosion in a design whose hallmark is dying in a violent explosion. Since youre clearly favoring Steiner anyways I'd suggest the Thunderbolt 5SS as an alternate. It just works. Its an early tech level design I take into later eras because it still does solid damage and keeps chugging regardless of whats shooting at it. Definitely try that lance out though and if the dice is making it frustrating its good to have a reliable standby.

That would be me. Big game event I ran at my lgs, 8 a side, 3051, Clan vs IS. The Clans became too focused on honour and scoring kills so lost on objectives, but they had some memorable moments, including a sole Summoner holding their entire left flank against 2 lances of IS mechs including a couple of Assaults, and 3 Mad Dog's managing to heat themselves up so much that they spontaneously detonated from ammo cookoffs. It was a fun game., and at one point the IS left was held by a single Cyclops that just refused to die.
Pic unrelated, been at Tankfest today.

It does have a mini it shares line art with the Scylla, which is a modernization of the storm giantband oh boy the Scylla has a mini. PGI kitbashes look like shit they dont even try to.blend things together its just frankenmechs.

>>95968004
Because someone had mentioned it earlier and I had to look up what the fuck it was, if I hadn't seen the art recently I wouldnt have been able to figure out what is was from the weapon mounts.

>>95964961
And you know what fuck you for making me look it up what the fuck does an obscure golden century clan assault have to do with a hunchback other than a shoulder mount AC20 they dont serve the same role and have nothing else in common.

Waiting for paint to dry to do the bases, changed my mind about tge camouflage, done with the mechs for now but might add some more white detail if I can think of something good.

Both are good choices. I like that weird canopy of the dire wolf cockpit, fuselage thing.

>the Scylla, which is a modernization of the storm giant
And I had to look up this mini, as if anyone would be caught dead putting one of those janky messes of a mini on the table.
>other than a shoulder mounted AC/20 they have nothing in common
That is the hallmark feature of the Hunchback, if it doesn't have a big cannon on it's right shoulder, it isn't a Hunchback. Conversely, any mech with a big cannon on it's right shoulder is an honorary Hunchback.
And not being immediately recognizable, or at least not being the usual evergreen mechs always seen on the table is the half the point of this lance, I wanted a high BV force of mechs you don't see every day, something to switch up the game with because I already have plain jane evergreen introtech mechs well covered by my other forces.

I think it would best be described as a cowl or hood.
"Cowl" is also a design quirk but none of the clan mechs that look like that actually have that quirk as far as I remember.

I actually really like the design of the bullshark. It's like an angry redneck with a really egregiously huge beer belly, waddling around and incoherently shouting at people while holding a 40.

The quality of the setting from the clan invasion to the jihad is about as bad and only substantially drops off at the dark age.

3rd succ to FCCW is solidly enjoyable, it's definitely straining at the seams towards the end, but the Jihad onwards feels like something that happened to other people, and I say that as one of the people who was still reading the dark age books as they came out.
