The story of it is that elves used to be an all-women race who reproduce through some kind of divine festival at a massive holy tree, but then the tree lost its ability to create new elves. The elves found a workaround by breeding the males of other races. They attacked other races and forced an arrangement where those races give up males as breeding slaves or will continue to get raided. The only ones who refused were the orcs.
