It is very fun, but you need to play into the mechanics of the game mode.

We had a mix of 3rd party and GW terrain. The 3rd party would have been better -if- we had 'copied' the features of the GW interactive terrain (Turrets, computer nodes etc) that came in each kill team set. The missions for each boarding actions book from 9th (annd updated for 10th) use these extensively.

My brushes and paints were feeling super cooperative, maybe the fan that was on was giving them some new helpful painting properties, but that combined with a burst of motivation meant I was able to sit down and finish up this guy. I quite love how he turned out. I was a little worried the hands wouldnt glue properly after the first attempt where they were kind of sliding off, but after a bit of finnagling they're holding pretty tightly.

Only 2 more and i finally finish this kill team. I dont even wanna think how long its been, but its definitely been enjoyable.

The setting fully supports CSM being as traditional to their old ways as you like, or not, you have a lot of freedom of choice. 3 years ago, I started collecting a Genestealer Cults army.
I never really liked the official GSC lore — the whole idea of carefully preparing a planet just to be devoured later didn’t sit right with me. It just never appealed.

But I’ve always loved their themes: guerrilla warfare, fanatical devotion, and the struggle of the low against the high.

So I came up with my own lore for them.

In my version, they're just regular humans working in an industrialized Imperial system. Years of exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals have slowly turned them into mutants.

Their working conditions are unbearable, yet their labor brings enormous value to the Imperium. Aware of this, the people begin to demand a better life — and eventually, they rise up in rebellion.

That’s their story.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to share any photos of my Genestealer Cult — my old accounts with the pictures have been deleted, and the army itself no longer exists. You'll just have to take my word for it.

However, I can post images of my CSM and share the lore of the warband, if you're interested.

I dont know why they would skip some of the more interesting side stories, but sure. You need to keep in mind that its all a matter of taste, and it also depends a lot on what legions you like the most. Your list is the streamlined "Primarch"-main story. It skips pretty much everything that i would consider interesting, because it was not known before.
It skips the White Scars stuff, Dark Angels stuff, Blood Angels stuff, Nightlords, Iron Hands/Salamanders/Raven Guard stuff and also everything about the Mechanicum.
Also it skips all the short stories, and some of them are 10/10.
Depending on where your interests are, this might affect you more or less.

But you cant go wrong by listening to the first 5 entries/books, and go from there, if you liked it or not.

Not from your list:
Outcast dead, Nemesis and Titandeath are excellent, even if they are barely relevant side stories in the big picture. Maybe because of that.
And as an Alpha Legion fan, i'm offended that they did not include "The Serpent Beneath" and Pretorian of Dorn.

I understand those shortened lists from a buyers PoV, so you dont have to buy 60+ books from BL, or from Audible. But if you pirate the stuff anyway, you can just listen to all of it while painting.

Politely voice your concerns in the group chat. Maybe clear everything you're going to say with the organizer through private dm first. If you're diplomatic about it, there might be people who were secretly feeling the same thing and now they can publicly agree once one person speaks up, or even if not, maybe some of the tryhards who don't know any better can be introduced to playing a different way. Sometimes people just don't know anything other than competitive and minmaxing because they came from starcraft or other videogames or whatever. I have after the first game because I was quite surprised after seeing everyone's list for what's supposed to be a casual friendly 1000pts where everyone builds up their army over the course of 16 games or so but everyone has super heavy stuff. NTA but Pistol keyword allows you shoot into combat during the Shooting Phase, which is specified. If a Hellblaster dies in combat, it shouldn't be able to fire his Plasma Gun because its in combat and the Plasma Pistol wouldn't work because it's not the shooting face.
I suppose it would work if it's already in the engagement range of an enemy unit during the shooting phase and the enemy kills your hellblaster with their own pistol, they can now fire back because it's the shooting phase so the pistol rule would be active.

I posted some of my Sororitas squad and in general I don't find it that hard or complex to run them specially compared to a friend that plays GSC. We do lack anti vehicle and anti big dumb characters like Norns or Farsight options but otherwise it's golden

But actually? They're not that bad, nothing in the DG codex is bad except the plague surgeon and the icon bearer. Just remember that they're awful if you play them as mortars to hide out, they're reasonably tanky and you should be moving them up and just LoS shooting the main gun (it kills like one marine on average when indirect shooting it).

The jakhal detachment is kind of a meme. It's very good on paper and many armies simply can't deal with the kind of thing it wants to do. But to really do what it really wants to do, someone would need to acquire and paint up 100+ jakhals, and one would have to be kind of insane to do that. But the idea is very cool and on paper, 100+ surprisingly punchy dudes with 4++ for two rounds of the game, a bunch of tough monsters and maybe a lord of skulls will simply bowl over some armies, and bog down a lot more.

Give it a few weeks to see how it shakes out. The knight changes just hit the game. It might not be that strong competitively if you care about high level table performance. Or it might be too strong. If you are casual I say go for it because keeping the knight alive and trying to different strategies to use it (like Reserves + Rapid Ingress) can teach you a lot about the game and deployment.

If it's crusade, experiment with your lists in a way that'll mess with the local meta. My crusade was very vehicle heavy too, so I opted to take nothing but infantry. It didn't do much better or worse in the long run but I greatly enjoyed seeing the panic on some of my opponents faces at the sight of 130+ infantry running towards their lascannons.
