Armageddon and Necromunda are pretty much the only ones, because they needed to be fleshed out for other games. Apart from that it's usually not in GWs interest to work intently on one planet because the galaxy is a fuckhuge place and they're just going to jump to another one and another one. I guess for more recent stuff Vigilus got a fair amount of depth at least.

40k went from a setting as a background to why everyones fighting everyone else to after the HH series, a plot that people want to advance. They want important named characters to have 0 mystery and to interact with each other and what the plot to advance, that is events that alter the setting forever. Graduate training? They don't. They continue training whenever they aren't deployed, forever.

Varies, much less is allowed for Marines because it causes problems with the gene-seed implants and might make them incompatible.

They see a lot of combat. Sitting around guarding stuff is typically for the Planetary Defense Forces, if you're getting shipped out in the Guard, they probably have an active warzone for you. But, not always.

3) Meditation, sparring and prayer. Graduation largely depends on the chapter.
4) Mutations in space marine chapters are common, but usually not debilitating. The imperial guard will take nearly anybody for the meat grinder.
5) Guardsman are like tissue paper. Most get used once and then chucked.
6) Warp exposure produces random effects, ranging from mutation to possession. Being physically inside the warp without protection is a death sentence.

I watched Ultramarines last night. Why do people hate it? I think it was solid especially for a time where we didnt have astartes to think about.
It really nailed the horror aspect, lots of super solid imagery like the imperial fists being disemboweled and pinned against a gate to make the chaos star.

It's not something you hear out of DEldar fans constantly though. Im more focusing towards the people who like/play the NLs/DEldar than the factions themselves. A lot of their appeal does come from being comically evil and the whole sneaky behind the scenes kabal shit. While yes they can be justifiable the writers focus way less on their aspect of being rejects from conventional Aeldari society when compared to the way the NLs are written with a heavy focus on how buck breaking Nostramu was or how much their primarch and other legions treated them like shit.
"We want revenge on a galaxy that hates us" agains't "we want the galaxy to hate us as it's the only way we can live" are 2 very different things. But again I haven't read a lot of DEldar fiction and their fans being less obnoxious may very well be a result of just having a smaller fanbase as opposed to anything more nuanced.

"Modern 40k art is bad" is a notion that gained prominence during 8th when there was a rule at GW that art had to show only/mostly things that had miniatures and couldn't deviate from them. Nowadays this restriction is thankfully gone. Also, Lewis Jones, an excellent illustrator, was given a lot of prominent pieces. Pretty much all recent memorable images (admech codex cover, all the different demon engine illustrations, world eater codex cover) were made by him.

Finally managed to play a game the other day and I need to know, how so you guys deal with LoS? The maps are so restrictive weapon ranges beyond 24" don't matter as there's multiple LoS blockers between everything. You stage aggressively. You push up through terrain. You send infiltrators and scouts forward to give early pressure. You use transports to deploy to the front lines quicker. All the things that make it tactically difficult for you to focus fire down enemies work in your favor and against your opponent as well. You can maneuver around and create chole points within the terrain or move block to try to set up a solid lone of defense. There's a lot of interplay just in how you choose to move and not just in how you choose to shoot. Once you look at the movement and positioning of your army as a battle for ground even before you get to the dice rolls you'll see the complexity of options you have to interact with your opponent with.

Troupe Master with a Troupe is the mainstay of Reaper's lists right now. The main army doesn't have good dev wounds and struggles into monsters die to poison and haywire not working on them, so sustained hits Troupes fill a gap in the army.
Some like Shadowseer with the Enhancement but it's not as popular.
Starweavers are used as needed for transporting smaller Troupes. Skyweavers are actually quite good for a fast anti-vehicle threat but they compete with the cheaper Reaver and better Scourges in the main army.
Death Jester can be cute for a lone OP but doesn't do anything.
Voidweavers are overcosted and not used too much.
Solitaire is also too overcosted for a worse Lelith.

Transports are cheap enough, fast enough, and durable enough in this edition that you're really doing yourself a disservice not to have at least one. You can use them to throw a troop up to the front line quickly, piggyback jump another troop into them to protect and deploy next turn, go drive it up to move-block the enemy and create a choke point, or just fuck off to the side of the board afterwards to perform actions and screen out enemy reserves with it after it gets your important stuff where it needs to go.

Yeah it's hard to have a list that does everything at 1K. Which is why a lot of people say the game is only really properly balanced for 2K.

But you actually have a couple of options to force people out on to midpoints. You can throw a weak sacrificial unit but that could just get shot off. Works well against bigot stuff with low volume of fire though. You can put a sticky objective on it in which case they have to physically move something out there. Or if you can afford it, you can put a big durable brawler unit that they have to commit something heavier to remove. Even if they don't come all the way out to the midfield to actually fight you, they generally have to leave their big tanks or whatever they shot with exposed so that you can then move to flank them and fire on them while leaving few firing lines back at yourself. You get into a game of trading and trying to minimalize enemy sight lines back to you while forcing them to give you better ones and having longer range weapons gives you better ways to exploit this.

I don't really like scouts or any of the vanguard units, they don't fit the style of my chapter so I avoid taking them. Next phase of the campaign is 1500 points so I was considering adding another tactical squad with a drop pod, a terminator squad, a whirlwind and replacing vulkan for a terminator captain. Death Guard's poxwalker detachment could do it without even trying. But anyone with enough infiltrators could do it. It really doesn't take much when you spread out to the full 2" coherency. Especially if the drop pods still have to obey the "outside of 9 inches" rule given that they're a fairly large footprint.

Rhino chassis is too ubiquitous in too many armies for them to retire, though there MIGHT be a rhino refresh.
Drop Pod changes and a bunch of firstborn units being embiggened like SGV/Terminators makes it quite likely that some of the firstborn units will just get a scale up. My hot take is that the only unit we lose is the old Dread chassis, Rhino gets a refresh (that GW spins as Look! Chaos gets an update! Sisters get an update!) and at some point shrimplified loadout Tacts/Devs drop.

What we might lose, though, is the Whirlwind because GW hates indirect.

Assault squads, drop pods, sternguard, scouts and terminators basically got a 1:1 upgrade (loss of special weapons for assaults, which could come back like the eviscerator for death company, and sniper scouts aside). Assault terminators and vanguard veterans will also get a 1:1 update too. Do you count the tanks? Those don't need to be replaced (as a unit, the kit might get an update) as all of them fill different niches. That leaves only tacticals and devastators. Tacticals I'm of the copium opinion that they'll just replace intercessors with a pseudo tactical squad, like they've done for space wolves, templares and Emperor's children. Devastators still have their own niche and they could get a mostly 1:1 update like assault squads got. Probably limiting them to 5 man squads like havocs or SoB heavy weapons whose name escapes me now.

The Emperor's holy inquisition and his agents have enough power to field countless units from the Imperium under their hands. If anything I like them being composed of a couple of elite HQ units leading tons of other factions like GK, DW, ADS, ADA with their own quirks when under their supervision. Commorragh is bascially a whole solar system in terms of space, on top of other dimensions chained to it and connected to the central solar space sized space. It's huge and massively densly populated in.
