I never liked the firbolg until Crit Role fans messed with their looks. Tall, vaguely Irish gingers that hide in the woods arent interesting (especially when youve grown up as one). The Wild Hunt version was better but still kind of bleh. But fey giants with clearly fey looks hits just the right spot. The deer-like ears and noses (people say cow, but none of them look cow-like), on a forest giant just looks and sounds right, especially for ones that are supposed to be guardians and tenders of nature.

Honestly, I've never liked any of the giants to just be particularly tall humans, not even ogres or hill giants. A giant should reflect their nature in their body, such as stone giants looking like Easter Island stone heads, both in proportions and texture, or storm giants having a perpetual mist and lightning play across their skin with exaggerated oni-like monster faces. They absolutely should not look like a normal human made 20 ft tall, unlike so much of European myth where everything is some variety of short or tall human.

Add in some antler headwear and you've got a certified fantasy forest giant druid.

As everything goes, its all tribalistic culture warrior nonsense. "This popular lefty gaming group features 5e versions of a race, therefore I will hate them for not using the older versions which I had no idea of before this moment." "Oh my god, now they look like furries with cownoses and one has pink hair like those damned tumblrinas, I must hate this to fit in with my fellow conservatives on 4chan".

Its all so tiresome.

Its generally accepted that the Fir Bolg are literally just a myth, having never existed and being a made up tribe to fit into a biblical-based narrative as created by the Christian priests who wrote the Lebor Gabála Érenn long after any druids could pass on any information about ancient Ireland.

Yes you fucking newfag faggot, my dad used them in his campaign world when I was a teenager, they were friendly NPCs and we hung out with them for a bit. They're very good whimsical sort of fantasy monsters. This wasn't even that long ago, it was like 2009. And yeah what they did to firbolgs was really fucking gay and retarded but it's done and they're ruined now. Most 2e and earlier monsters were not drawn to be inspiring to look at. The inspiration came from their write-ups. In 1e/2e, Firbolgs were N(CG) giants that outclassed Hill Giants and had the ability to swat away bolts and arrows and catch spears, javelins and thrown boulders and then throw them back.
Anonymous No.95988550 [Report]

No, they typically fly in through apertures on the ceiling and stuff like that. The part of the dungeon that is sized for normal creatures (which is where adventures usually go through) is where the dragons' lackeys inhabit. This is all pretty basic, anon. No dragon is entering their dungeon through the main door unless its a temple of tiamat or something like that

I used them in one of my homebrew worlds as a modified player race, putting a lot of emphasis on their size-changing. They had like a mixed culture with halflings since the halflings could very easily fit into the smaller gaps in a firbolg's home. The firbolgs could shrink down to more easily interact with the "wee ones" but always risked shifting back into giant size in their sleep, so they were perpetual strangers outside of their mountain holds since they basically couldn't sleep indoors in human settlements.

This, pictured, is my problem with modern Firbolgs. The celts-to-hippie-giants progression is interesting from an observational standpoint. It's perfectly acceptable as an archetype. And already was in the 90s when the Voadkyn did it.

The change didn't give us anything we didn't already have, but it did take something away. And now there's *less* player options and in-universe diversity.

Look at literally any famous D&D dungeon and the vast majority has 10ft wide corridors that do fit large adventurers.
In fact, the normal square size for old school D&D adventures like keep on the borderlands is 10ft so the basic square fits large adventurers fine.

This idea that dungeons are super tight with no space for large creatures has never been supported by actual evidence.
Seriously, you fight stuff like ogres and gelatinous cubes and other monsters of that size all the fucking time in dungeons.

Do your dungeons feature nothing bug goblins, snakes, and tiny fucking monsters? No? then they can fit a centaur, or whatever.
