I let myself get roped into playing 5e again.
Not D&D; I play old-school D&D frequently, along with other RPGs.
I let a friend convince me to join a 5th edition D&D game.

My god. How the fuck do people play this? I was really liking the game, and then we went into combat. Everything slows down, it takes at least ten minutes for my turn to come back to me, and it's all about measuring 5-feet squares, "combos", and thinking in game terms about everything like it was a videogame or one of those isekai animes (you know the type).

You play old-school D&D.
That makes you a dust-eating bitch who's opinion is entirely irrelevant.

Sounds like a skill issue, this isn't a problem in the 5e game I play in. Maybe get gud.

I'm not sure you were actually playing 5e, OP

This is a player issue. 5e just happens to be the most popular TTRPG, which means it attracts more bad players. Tje weekly game I play it doesn't seem to have a session without someone being completely new to the game, or have players with horrible attention spans that have zero idea what they're doing despite being multiple sessions in.

I feel like I'm the only one at the table who has actually read the PHB/DMG, and I'm not even the GM.

Your DM forces you to use maps so big the squares actually matter?

No, it just attracts more players.
Even the worst 5e players I've seen have been kind of average. The absolute worst are the kind of shit-eating grognards who practice system tribalism, and not just ordinary system tribalism, but contrarian system tribalism.

>I joined a game I didn't want to join and now I'm not having fun and it's somehow the game's fault.

Are you actually retarded? I mean more than d&d players normally are? Just leave the game and spend your hobby time doing something you like.

You're supposed to pre-solve the combos in char-gen

I weekly play OSE with guys in their 50s and 60s who've been playing D&D since childhood. Combat is a mess because spellcasters forget to declare their spells before someone else rolls initiative, we switch between melee, ranged and movement phases when someone finds they have no available targets left, and whose attack is resolved first is basically a shouting match. If you think this is inherently faster than individual initiative, you are delusional.
>it takes at least ten minutes for my turn to come back to me
At what party and encounter size?
>and it's all about measuring 5-feet squares
No, that's 4e. Playing on a grid is optional in 5e.
>"combos"
How is that a knock? Synergy between actions is good. Just don't be a player who tries to optimize the fun out of everything and gets analysis paralysis.
>and thinking in game terms about everything like it was a videogame or one of those isekai animes (you know the type).

You have 2 options.
>Accept that the game is shit and just enjoy it for what it is
>Offer to run a game and outshine their current DM then tutor him in how to run a game that isn't shit
Anything else is just bitching.
