No, it fucking isn’t. There is absolutely no requirement for visual aids, and THAT’S part of what makes TTRPGs great. The space given to you to imagine.

I don’t really mind. As someone who’s DMed for a decade, sometimes you want stupid little art for your stupid little game.

And I know, I know. DnD should be the forerunner of the tabletop aesthetic - but it’s not 1995 anymore, the internet is awash in “epic” set-pieces or “alluring” character portraits. DnD rightfully recognizes that real grogs build their aesthetic from a collage of gathered pieces, so trying to appeal to them is a fool’s errand.

If you’re tanking your own games because you’re mad that your players DARED to imagine that something looks different from how you pictured it, there’s something wrong with you.

I've figured it out. I hate fags not because they bum each other (and I don't even need to know they do), but because the aesthetic they promote is awful. It's weirdly sissified, really desperate for attention, and often low quality. If they just acted like normal people and liked normal things, I'd have no problem with them, which tells me I'm not homophobic because my hate for them isn't about their sexuality, it's about the weird culture they then wrap around it.

Anon probably forgot that DnD is meant to be a collaborative storytelling exercise where the plot is meant to be a setup for player interactions. An important lesson for GMs, since it’s a pitfall I’ve fallen into many times, is that a scene should never be built on PCs reacting to something played out or described. They need a voice.

He's probably right, though. There's things in it that don't make sense, mostly around the design and placement of the statues, which suggests AI, because any real designer would see the issues. You can also tell if you flip the image left to right quickly, you can see where the design and layout doesn't align, and that's almost illustration 101.

I read an article about the gay rights campaign a while back that was very illuminating. Basically, as more rights have been won, an increasing majority of gay people have been satisfied by their progress and stopped campaigning for more. People who didn't care about acceptance and just wanted to be decriminalized? They aren't part of the movement any more. People who just wanted to be able to get married? Same thing. Now, everyone will still show up for pride events and the like and will talk about how important it is not to backslide, but the percentage of activists is basically perpetually falling.

What this means is that people who define themselves by their sexuality and try to promote any kind of identity-related agenda are increasingly weirder and weirder and simultaneously less and less representative of what it means to be homosexual. So, realistically, it isn't even that you hate gay people for promoting something, but that you hate the people who have so little an idea of what they want to be that ALL they can latch onto is the idea of being gay.

It's not that I hate this existing. There's room in the world for games like this. And I appreciate deviating from generic fantasy photoshop style.
My problem is it's all in one direction. Where's the gritty black and white 14th century knights or the lurid frazetta pin-up? They always want diversity, as long as it's diversity in their weirdly juvenile fantasy utopia (in a game about murdering monsters and looting their corpses, for some reason).

The general placement of the statues line up with that, I would say the constriction was the size of the page, but it doesn't look to me like something AI will come up with. Just to be sure I went to check the guy's blog and indeed it seems he's an ink and paper artist.

Most artists don't do that kind of thing anyway, they just eyeball it.

It's weird watching people try to dissect the differences between AI art and human art because half the time they're picking on the most irrelevant shit. Even good artists fuck up proportions and angles and make strange choices all the damn time.
