>>96043157A lucky hit from a ballista almost destroyed his siege tower, and he scrambled back down to start shooting upwards from ground level, blasting more chunks from the walls.
After the first clash, Sword saw that civilians (conscripted into a bucket brigade and a robust militia) were trying to flee from the assault. They were promptly ridden down (despite his protestations) and killed by the charge. By yelling, he made himself heard and used Hypercommand to get the men to dismount, but by then more soldiers were flooding into the city, killing and burning everything.
Between Spear and Shield, people were killing and trampling each other in sheer desperation, trying to get away from both unkillable demigods. They basically had no chance, Shield ramped up his aura to full power and just marched forward. At one point they were outright retreated from his death-field, and he rolled up the entire flank. Both groups met in the middle, with Bow (cautiously) joining the general flood of men clambering up the walls. At this point, they had killed effectively hundreds of people, and broken the back of the enemy army.
The PCs found the main temple, which was filled with the people of the city, and narrowly managed to avert a massacre (and the looting of the treasures there). Some of the soldiers grumbled, but were cowed due to the prodigous prowess of the players. The PCs emerged to see that the ruling family had been killed, with the banners of Trigan going up above the city. Spear went to ask - Where were the Twisted and the minions of the Nightmare King?
Their liason officer explained to them that by not siding with Trigan, the city-state supported the Nightmare King and his minions by default, undermining the Grand Alliance by holding out for neutrality.
At this point, Spear's player asked me:
> were we literally killing people the whole day to help them take over?
