Pirate TTRPG
Hey tg has anyone heard/played any good pirate ttrpg systems. 7 skies intrigued me but that's because I played pirates 101 as a kid

Word of advice, then: using a pepe in 2025 is shorthand for 'I'm shitposting and want you to know it,' if you expect serious answers and discussions, it'll generally help not to use them.

Spelljammer. I ran a Spelljammer campaign not too long ago that went about a year. We were playing 5e but we used the 2e rules for ship-to-ship movement and combat. The 2e rules convert easily and hold up just fine. Was tons of fun. For the campaign, I simply used the plot of The Pirates of Dark Water cartoon from the 90s, wholesale lifting it and running it in Spelljammer. Was really fun.

How different is it from MΓΆrk Borg? Because that is just grimslop dark fantasy where style triumphs over substance.

It reuses some of MB tables for gear and shit, with hilarious results.
Gameplay-wise? It's servicable. The setting is entirely ignorable and you can just run regular pirate games with it, with sea-shanties bullshit stories thrown in for the right mix. I played MB once and that was enough. With PB, I finished the campaign across 5 meet-ups and had fun.
Was the system necessary for that? Probably not, but it's functional and does the whole "dying is fun" stuff in a neat way.

To me it's MB but actually enjoyable, information is more dense and the layout doesn't make it a pain to read. I particularly enjoyed the bestiary.
It's in the Free League trove.

Barbarians of Lemuria - Mythic backported H+I's naval rules if you want naval shenanigans in the antique era of sailing (oars, rams, boarding, Greek fire).

Furry Pirates. Although it is intended as an anthropomorphic animals game the rules don't go out of their way to deal with that, like iirc the main different between a bird character and a cow is that the bird can be small to medium sized and the cow is medium to large which gives bonuses or penalties to strength and agility. Easily replaceable with humans. Putting furry on the cover is off putting but once furry rpgers open it they'd probably be disappointed that it's not very furry at all.

It's a solid system, not a great one but it works, with good historical background and ship sailing and fighting as well as covering magic if you want fantasy pirates. If you find you can't get past the furry part, which like I said isn't all that in your face, and you don't like the core system the historical information is still worth reading.

NTA but It's a different game entirely but I would say better. It runs off a grid combat system and is more like a traditional turn-based RPG rather than using cards. Was definitely made for older kids than the W101 target audience.

I can't really speak for wizard that much because I didn't play it as a kid, pirate101 and toontown before that were my intros to MMOs as a little boy.

That seems to be a problem with early furry games, Albedo did it too. Ironically, "the only good furry RPG", Ironclaw, is the first one to actually make animal races more different from each other

I just used BRP with the boys a lot and the thing is basically what people want DND 5e to be which is a sandbox starting point to play any genre.
>because I played pirates 101 as a kid
You are a scholar and truly cultured.
For me it was Wizard101 but Pirate101 has a place in my heart.
And quite frankly without pirate101 I never would have had an interest in tabletop games because seeing a tabletop game reminded me of p101 so I got interested in wargaming and it has been history since.

Personally no. I also got on a Pirate kick just recently and am looking for a good fully-fleshed out game.
I checked out Pirate Borg but it looked like all flash zero substance to me and I want to run games for more than a session.
I've heard good things about Flashing Blades with the caveat that it is very crunchy and that has a High Seas supplement for piracy.
