>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

I think I'd just play OPR with the advanced rules. Not the best wargame, but I could use all of my models and even play larger games smoothly.

What's the best game for playing with small squads of futuristic/near-future operators? No need for campaign rules or narrative scenarios, I need some good old one-stand pitched battle action.

Reason: I can play it on my own if needed, but it can, despite solo focus, also played with others. Random tables will keep it interesting enough and the setting is generic enough to allow all sorts of miniatures.

Hasslefree folded and got dissolved by the UK tax agency but the owners registered a new company not long ago, probably in an act of transferring assets over before the debtors take hold of masters and molds.

Website is gone, Owner is too busy streaming CoD and begging for money in his #sickstream 12 hours every day rather than packing KS boxes and sending it to the people who gave him their money. Make sure you check in on him on twitch and let him know if you are still waiting on your shit.

Interesting thread, much like Black Tree Design UK I would never place an order with Hasslefree. I have no idea why anyone would, they must need their little treats so badly.

I didn't realise Archon Studio was just a full reboot of Prodos Games as mentioned in that thread. I guess things worked out this time.

Limp-wristed reddit culture that is spread by americans beeping an *&$%-ing swear words left and right, creating an advertising friendly culture of weak men with no gut for the least amount of conflict in their lives. Jokes on them, I'm fucking their daughters who are young enough to be my own, and they all scream 'daddy dady' when you my balls are slapping up against them doggy style.

Weak men mage hard times. I hope the alphabetsoup-ally HF faggot floats up like a goldfish soon, so that someone can claim their range on the cheap.

That's exactly what Mercs, Asymmetric Warfare/Spectre 2.0, Infinity, Reality's Edge, and several other games all do. It depends on how "realistic" versus "futuristic" you want to skew.
Infinity is very gamist and deep into cyberpunk land. It's exclusively PvP and very honed for a competitive tournament environment, not so much good for making your own scenarios.
Reality's Edge is still cyberpunk with options to ground it. It's more of a Shadowrun kind of thing than Ghost in the Shell, with both sides buying crews to accomplish objective-based missions and heavy use of non-combatants as both terrain and objectives. For my money it's the best raw battle game out of the bunch, especially with some of the funnier scenarios.
MERCs is less cyberpunk and you have semi-fixed teams (plus the game is sorta dead as shit). Rules are solid and simple.
Asymm/Spectre is a 10-minutes-in-the-future game with a much more loosey-goosey approach. As the name suggest it's designed to let imbalanced teams meet on even footing. It's still fun with small units of operators taking each other on - just be aware that it will be *extremely* lethal and adding vehicles to the mix escalates the violence much further. Most modern skirmish games aren't actively updating to take the stuff we've learned from the current Caucasus and MENA situations into account. Asymmetric/SPECTRE is.
If you want something more basic and you're willing to hack your own unit stats, then most pulp systems (7TV, fistful of lead, etc) can handle simple operator-on-operator combat while not being quite so deadly

>someone recc'd Zona Alfa
Zona Alfa is a Cold War game with severe mechanical problems. It's also explicitly narrative.

Asymmetric/Spectre is really only extremely lethal if you play like a tard. It's very much designed to play like real life gun fights, heavily benefitting from cover, laying down suppressive fire or throwing smoke before moving in the open. Enemies in buildings are VERY hard to dislodge via CQB unless you fill the building with frags and flash grenades before entering. If you treat it like real life, ie. if I run out in the open while being shot at I'm going to die, you will do a lot better

ive only dabbled a bit with resin printing (dont really have the space for it) but it mostly comes down to 3 things, the quality of the stl, the resin you use, and how good your printer is.
Primary bottle neck will be the printer, but even with the cheapest printer you can reasonably do some 15mm stuff, it just depends on the quality of the stl maker (something like forest dragon's minis are gonna be a super quick and easy process but other stl makers can have some pretty terrible supports or other things along those lines)
10mm might be fine on most printers, and 6mm you probably need a high end printer to not lose too much detail

Zona Alfa is in the Osprey trove. The current FAQ/errata are buried somewhere in their abomination of a Facebook page and I can't be arsed.
Asymmetrical Warfare is essentially Spectre2 with some minor extra rules. The original company let the rules writer go so they could do Spectre 3 as something closer to Warhammer 2k, and he retained copyright but not the trademarks. Most of the stuff printed for Spectre2 is compatible with minimal work.
There's a bunch of supplemental SPECTRE 2 material that may not be in the trove, like the rules for John Wick, zombies and the Predator. Also jungle fighting instead of the assumed desert/urban/cropland setup in the original game.

Is there anyone around who makes non-humanoid aliens in 28mm, ideally for cheap? (by that I mean well under 5$ per mini)
These came from the board game Endure the Stars. There's a buttload of minis in this game, sadly they suffer from the identical ballerina syndrome. Pic related are all of the unique poses in this game.
I'm considering using a heat gun to try to change the pose for a few more of them, so I have enough units for a Stargrave team, at least. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not.

They're fine. Most resin printers within the last 5 years can handle it. The issue comes down to model quality and print bed size. Models designed in those scales print fine, 28mm scaled down do not. I recommend scaling up 10mm to 15mm, the models are sturdier. Print bed size determines how much you can print at once, the bigger the bed the more yoi can print.
I've printed several warmaster and epic armies, and the only issue I ran into was using too brittle of a resin and removing supports. They have ABS-like resin now which fixes the first problem, and the second comes down to unnecessary support placement and experience.

Probably something like the combat in En Garde, or moonstone even, where you both play cards without the other knowing what your move will be. For jousting you can allocate a certain amount of points into attack or defense and also maybe there could be some ideas of a rock/paper/scissors system in regards to where you aimed your lance vs the opponent. Idk I'm just throwing out ideas

It's a lot smaller in scope since it's a one book Osprey affair. Every gang has the same theme as high tech edgerunner types. The gang boss is a modifier added to a regular unit rather than a unique statline. Hacking is obviously a big deal and each team has a long range "shadow backer" who exists on the board as a cyber ghost. TnT has a lot of expansions that let it shift its post-apocalypse around with different thematic elements, but Reality's Edge is just cyberpunk. Which is fine of course, but it is a difference.

>Is there stuff one game represents and not the other?
Yeah, a lot.
RE has a very limited unit roster, all cyberpunk tropes. Borgs, hackers, virtual idols, that sort of thing. Most of your units are temporary hires for individual jobs, and you have a rotating roster even with permahires. RE does have some interesting additional rules for manipulating civilians and crowds in urban environments. Different equipment lists, of course, and most of the RE scenarios are based around simultaneous physical and cyberspace combat with digital avatars rtrying to hack objectives

TNT is post-apocalyptic. The sci-fi weapons are prone to breaking down. All the warbands are based on post-apoc tropes. There's a much, much broader selection of character types, larger warbands, and all of your crew is persistent rather than the mix of leader, permanent, and temp workers in RE. Obviously, no special rules for manipulating bystanders or cyberspace. Wandering monsters are more frequent and usually actual monsters. 1e has supplements for critter design, kaiju, even a fan-made/officially-published supplement for player settlements and forts
Likewise there's more equipment, mutations (which you can do a lot of heavy lifting with for aliens) and psychics. It's balanced assuming that high-tech stuff will break down and has limited rarity. If you do use it for generic sci-fi it's best to bump the price of all the Artifact equipment by ~15%.

If you want something super sci-fi, there's another fa/tg/uy's game more like Blame!, called "Zone Raiders". You build a settlement and do missions to build it up, the warbands are hired based on a tech tree. Heavily designed around traversing dense, vertical terrain like Carnevale, and you have to physically extract downed warband members for extra tension. IME letting players always choose secondary objectives means they constantly specialize in one of them; other than that, pretty solid. Less variety than TNT, more than RE

I got miniatures from Heroes of Might and Magic board game All In. All aside from the ones usable on main game board (heroes, castles). I don't want them to just gather dust, so I was thinking, I could use them with some miniature agnostic wargame rules. Any ideas what I could use them with? I also got battlefield board, but without hero components, unit and spell cards, I can't exactly play that mode.

There's also Brutality Skirmish if you *really* want to just throw whatever the fuck you have at a table and go to town. Profiles are extremely abstract - there's functionally no difference between a werewolf and a cyborg or a Brick-type superhero - but that makes it fast to set up and adjucate. and it's still a better core system than OPR
>>96106002
Butality is a very simple smash-and-bash game with very few assumptions. You basically just throw stats at a random handful of models. WarEngine - and GWAR by extension - has a more involved build process. You have to be willing to feel stuff out as you go and test them out a few times.

The Italian and Japanese power armour guys were among the best minis they had for K47, and while I'm not into K47 at all, I think I would be tempted to get a box of those if they would make them in plastic.

Honestly I am kinda worried with inclusion of 40k refugee designers coming over to K47, but at same time I was already disappointed with K47 because you could tell all the interest went to designing Axis powers and there was little care for the allies side.
Coming off the high of something like Operation Darkness; a game where british paratroopers with werewolfs and a witch fight against nazi vampires with undead legion into having only half platter where best brits get are some pitbulls and tinmen... was disappointing. Doubly so when you see Ameirca and it's just basic dudes with maybe some power armor sprinkled in (that everyone already has in their arsenal) and soviets get some half-assed version of german units.

Well I'll keep my eyes on it still, as I do like what Warlord done with the Axis side and hope now that there's some movement with the game: maybe allies will get some love too.

I've not tried Halo (do owns it though), but I've heard nothing but praise for it's skirmish nature. Though current set-up is closer to board game than proper wargame, and the game is planned for massive overhaul in some near-distant future in order to allow things such as vehicles to be included.

The models are the old ones from 1st edition, 2nd is being handled by a company that's not... great about actually getting their stuff out there.
It's model agnostic anyway, the branded stuff is neat but it's not required. They even have a sidebar in the 1st edition core book for low tech "laser rifles" so wysiwyg autists can use IG models without having to equip them with the expensive and unreliable high tech laser weapons.

Stop making things up Anon, or, if you actually believe it, read some history books.
There was no yellow triangle for homosexuals in the 3rd Reich. And especially not in public. Jews had to wear a star in public.
In the camps, but not public, triangles were used to categorise prisoners:
Yellow: Jews
Pink: Gays

So you are pretty much wrong on all your points.

Might be some ultraviolet light night camo. Vril energy is also connected to the colour purple.
But what it really is is just one of several semi-official paint schemes they posted to show the new plastics in a variety of colours, so people get an idea about how they look.
Similar to how gw sometimes posts those collages of new models in a variety of colours.

It literally just shipped the first run of 2e books on Monday, they were holding on to the last of Worlds' End Games' stock in the mean time. Check the google doc in the OP for post-apoc minis, you can use pretty much anything. The game's not just model-agnostic but deliberately set up to accommodate several different universes in the army lists, or more generic trope lists.
Also Black Site is Canadian, 3D prints most of their stuff with the rest being Siocast, and ships slowly. I recommend a couple other sources.
>Copplestone's Future Wars range
Whole bunch of awesome stuff, they were most of the models in the original core book. It's available from about a dozen resellers. All-metal. Some of the best general Raider and Tribal minis on the market
>Crooked Dice
lots of 1980s military and some decent post-apoc, cops, robbers, plant mutants, robots, also the Colony 87 line of Rogue Trader inspired stuff
>Ramshackle
buncha weird muties and robots, the secondary sculptors' lines are usually more interesting than the main stuff
>Reaper
Sells animal parts for converting mutants. Lots of random but applicable shit, as usual, like the pack turtle, Super Mutants, or armadillo-man.
>Armorcast
Sells Fallout Brahmin and a whole bunch of robots, not so much with the regular humans
>Ral Partha Europe (UK)
Has some interesting minis hidden down in the bowels of the site
>EM4
Extremely cheap plastic gangers and troopers that you can kitbash with other guns
>Checkpoint Miniatures
Heads, including Fallout power armor. Animals. Some great robots and muties, as well as near-future SWAT
>Warlord
If you can find them the old Project Z survivors and SpecOps are incredible conversion fodder. Wargames Atlantic is busy cutting plastics for both but those are somewhere between a few months and a year out

Indeed. Especially when someone just wants rid or doesn't really care about what they own. However when someone knows what they have, we've seen Oldhammer prices hit like £8 each per single metal Space Marine.

These days I find in-person is the king of getting stuff cheap. Not maybe exactly what you want, but stuff you won't say no to at the prices.

Personally I think if you're in Sydney you should:visit a nice old pub like the Nag's Head, the Hollywood Hotel or the Hero of Waterloo.

NSW Art Gallery and Barracks isn't bad, Bronte beach is nicer than Bondi, Botannical Gardens are lovely.

You probably have them where you are but Kinokuniya is a good book shop, check out but Red Eye Records and the Gakaxy Bookshop and Hobbyco nearby.

Can't use Isopropyl on UV resins, could try something like Simple Green or Bio Strip 20 if you can get it. Bio strip 20 is pretty highly regarded but not cheap to ship across the globe. Acrylic resins are just not the greatest thing to get paint off of, for obvious reasons.

Warzone: Resurrection and AVP: Unleashed. Both by Prodos games and make use of an advanced combat deck of cards for each player that can either gice some kind of equipment bonus for your own squads, apply a circumstance modifier or ability on a friendly or enemy model/squad, or apply some kind of battlefield affecting condition on the table. As well as units, weapons and characters having active abilities requiring the expenditure of resource cards(also used for the card deck). I'll post up my collected folder for you when I get home.

Here we go, sorry this took so long, anon. First link is the AVP stuff, Wargame Rules and Scenarios folder is has the meat of what you want. The rest is just extras that probably have no meaning for you. DESU, this one is the best to go for if only for ease of access, there's a plethora of knock off Xenomorphs, Colonial Marines, and Predators out there in the stl sphere that you can find something to match the units on offer in the army lists.

https://mega.nz/folder/dHRmFDhT#nxotQIImpjLB48lPv3beIA

Second link here is the warzone folder, I'll link you the megapack I put together, has all the published editions and their accessories from over the years, but the one you want are the 1st and 2nd edition of Warzone: Resurrection, 2e streamlines things a little bit, more just tidying up the unit actions that can be taken, a bunch of the less popular or real edgecase actions were just dropped, alongside other adjustments and tweaks that make the gameplay a little smoother. the combat decks also change from faction specific to a more universal dual card system, 1 half of the card will have something faction specific and the other will have something that's universal. A little jarring on the transition but it ultimately made for a better mechanic, as in 1st edition all the new units introduced after initial release would add more cards and that would balloon into something quite unsustainable if things went on.

https://mega.nz/folder/QSgwTbgA#FOOzn2DMj78A-H4Lj2Vh9w

Warzone's a more difficult game to start up since going out of print, you can find models on ebay, but they're much rarer now than in years before when it was in retail and immediately after the end of license sale. There's STLs floating around on cults and telegram, but mostly the old 90s range. A lot more proxying will be in order if you wanna pick this one up. I can say that the WZR ranges will be getting scanned and disseminated soon, though ;^) I'll be back to share once that's done.

Well, there's a reason for that.. It's essentially the same company. They reformed after Warzone 3/Chronopia bankrupted them, most of the same sculptors and almost certainly some un-released sculpts for Warzone snuck into the Void line. Pic related still has Bauhaus Ducal Militia shoulderpads and gear, with mildly altered gun and backpack. Rhiannon is likely a Mourning Wolf hero, and there's a very blatant Valerie Duvall resculpt in the Syntha catalog. There are quite a few other little relics tucked away in the 1.0 catalog.

>>96128648
I normally use LA's Totally Awesome by default, its available at the dollar and grocery stores in the US. Works fast and simple, it's a moderately-powerful base and an unholy surfactant working in tandem. Doesn't get all enamels off but it does a hell of a job on varnish, oils, and acrylics.

Antares has some amazing models, really distinct designs between factions, something for everyone. It's got the generic mass effect/ power armour faction, the floaty elfy one, the not!Dune eccentric ones, a bunch of GLUP SHITTO alien ones, some grimderp for good measure, some automatous robots too.

Can anything be done to make the game popular? It has good rules by all accounts, it's fully 'explored' in terms of every faction has everything you'd want for it already, and to top it off its way cheaper than warhammer or infinity etc.

Gates really gives too much of a Mass Effect vibe. It kinda fits ST if you take into extended material, where they delve into the military stuff, but it doesn't really fit the pulpy feel of the original shows.

Having been around when it was new: The market was saturated, with 40k doing well, Warmachine not having died yet, and X Wing being in full swing, so there wasn't much reason to buy into what looked like yet another 40k knockoff, and the models being some plastic and some resin & metal when GW was all plastic was a turn off.

Plus the lore wasn't presented well. I had no real reason to care about the minis.

Coming back to this after a few hours: I think part of the problem was the title. Successful wargames all have short snappy titles with at least one war related word in them. Warhammer, Battletech, Warmachine, Star Wars Legion, etc. But "Beyond The Gates of Antares" is wordy enough to sound like a Star Trek TOS episode title and does not make it clear this is a wargame.
