Does it ever feel less satisfying to build around a combo or deck that the developers clearly intended, rather than "discovering" one yourself, regardless of the reality?

Tried a Zeon/OZ deck, it wasn't that good. Realized that a Neo-Zeon/OZ deck would be better. Tallgeese and Sinanju would be a bastard of a board to deal with.

depends on how you look at it. digimon is 5 years in the making and still strong and one piece is on the heels of 3rd place after 2-3 years of service. if none of their games were worth playing, digimon would've been the first one out and nothing would've came after. they can make quality games that can gain and retain players more often than not.

I play it, my locals have grown this set from 9 avg to 12 avg players. It's fun, simpler than mtg but more skill based than it looks - the better player in a mirror wins a best-of-3 9/10 times, and most meta decks don't swing worse than 65/35 in any match up with "equal skill" players.

Not expensive to play. Probably going to bounce back a bit given the new competitive circuit, but Ravensburger hasn't done a great job with that. Still, selling out 3 2k+ events instantly says something, and there's a lot of casual players and Disney collectors who subsidize the singles market.

I think it's the best /acg/ to get into and expect to easily find tournaments both tomorrow and in a year. Rotation is coming in like 6 weeks so don't buy into shit yet, but lorcanito is a free online client with mmr matchmaking, I recommend trying it out.

I guess it depends on your area. I've heard mixed stories from different anons here, in some places it never took off, in others it thrives. Another issue is, Lorcana is a little over a month away from set 9, which is when set rotation is announced to start. I think a lot of people are hesitant to buy with that soon to happen. Also, the comment about Lorcana not being cheap seems odd. It's one of the cheaper games, from what I've heard.

Did my Neo-Zeon+OZ deck and yup, it's a good one. The build up to Sinanju is so fucking easy, OZ makes for good chaff support and the Gaza-D support came in handy more than once. Fucking blew up my opponent's Wing Gundam no problem.

Gundam deck building is going to be too much for me all the different combinations that can be made getting a playset of all SRs so I can play whatever it is I want is going to be hella expensive.

There are long standing historical reasons for it.
Back in the day, when games were on region locked discs, it was not uncommon for the Asia region to be distributed games that was only in Japanese, even if there existed English versions.
It was also not uncommon to consume physical media in Japanese as English manga publishing was not really a thing back then.
I guess that's why Bandai, being a typical Japanese company, just continues operating the way they have always have.

But times have changed and I think they don't realize they are just handicapping themselves by continuing this way. Many of my friends would love to get into the bandai tcgs, some who buy sealed product just to open/collect, would never step into a local because of this.

So is Gundam any good? I know nothing about it. Is it similar to other anime card games like DBZ/One Piece?

I think some people are sleeping on Red/Blue. Tallgeese double slam and Sinanju "Hit shield, hit an enemy for 2 damage" is fucking nasty. Also being able to instantly rest an enemy unit is strong, plus good mid game with Geara Zulus and decent blockers for early game.

I bought some blitz decks to play FaB with some friends. Trying to get into the game. I'm probably going to buy the armory deck for Jarl if we end up liking it. I've never really played any tcgs, just digital ccgs, so I'm sure I'm going to be awkward at local events.

Give it to me straight: Is building Jarl deck a bad idea? Is he shit? I don't need some top meta deck or anything, but I just don't want to accidentally build something awful. I think there's a cynical math to it. The most reliably profitable time for a tcg is the first couple sets while the hype is high. So rotate out your high value IPs every few years to bring in that new game hype and maximize profits, and provide enough support to maintain what lower profits you can between those spikes. DB Super was a victim of this model, as it hadn't dropped below breaking even, but wasn't making nearly as much as a new hyped game would, so they just let it linger while still launching a new game.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a similar thing with One Piece in another two or three years. But it's maybe still making enough profits to delay that. Either way, I'd be shocked if Bandai isn't working on a new OP game to launch when and if the current one declines.

Eons ago I had a friend teach me how to play Yu-Gi-Oh. Two games in I realised he was stacking his deck. I never played a tcg before so I wasn't familiar with cutting your opponent's deck and stuff.
When I called him out he told me it was totally normal to pull something like this. Rarely have I felt so disappointed in a friend before or since. I grew up a little that day.

To be fair, I don't REALLY blame my friend and I don't think you should yours. It could be down to the environment they learned tcgs in.

In the arcade era of the FGC there were many unwritten and unspoken rules that if you broke could legitimately earn you a beating. Throwing too much, picking Rugal, zoning too much or spaming 'cheap' moves. These rules would be laughed at by the modern FGC. But it was a different time. In the arcades, every game you won meant you kept playing and every loss meant money spent for another token. There were no 'friendlies', no teaching or exchanging pointers, no mercy.

Recently I had an incident at a local lgs where I mistakenly activated an effect I actually couldn't, my opponent didn't catch this mistake and let it through but her friend watching at the side did. I apologized after he pointed the mistake out but he said that I shouldn't and that it was on my opponent to notice it. I don't agree with this but it does show the mindset some players have.
