I know itโa far quicker to use a torn up sponge to add distress texturing, but I find it to be messy and inconsistent in quality (sometimes too much paint, too little, kind of runny, etc.). Manually applying it may take ages but the end result simply looks more consistent.
Time to slowly batch paint the first level of highlights, then second level and finally little spots of Rhinox Hide for the damage. Canโt wait to get back to my Orks after this detour into Space Marines.
>>96107065Very crisp so far
House Taranis Armigers nearing completion. Just gonna matte down the finish and add some detail to the crisis suit abd call it done.
>>96107143I'm not big on knights but these look great
>>96107143Gorgeous checker pattern! Was this all done by hand?
>>96107173>>96107252>>96107267Cheers.
The patterns were done using tamiya masking tape, and an airbrush. Bit of clean up after by hand.
Ordering the model for the year. Anything else I should pick up while I'm at it? I need a better bright gold than Liberator because it's shit. I may also grab a cracked earth texture paste just because I have no idea how to otherwise do that effect. Any recommendation on one in particular?
>>96106935 (OP)Done with the whole coat and also finished the scarf. Will continue chipping at the shirt next. Will keep it simple, white.
>>96107625I don't like this sculpt, like, at all but your paintjob is fantastic
Batch painting 13 ratos and itโs a chore, canโt imagine doing 40 or 60 of them.
>>96106935 (OP)>>96103057>>96103069Paprika oxidizes dark brown after a few years, you're better off with a proper pigment like a pastel crayon or chalks

>>96107143Pretty cool, did you paint the checkers board by hand or found some more humane workaround?
Help, I need the tan version of this color but it clearly isn't what vallejo says it is.
>>96109948Werent luftwaffe uniforms navy?
>>96109963No, they were air force.
>>96109963There were a few colours.
Totally new to mini painting and I want to know if I would be able to produce solid results by priming a mini and then aggressively drybrushing multiple lighter layers onto it to build up color and shading and contrast. Then touch up some edges, paint weapons and pauldrons, and nice and easy done quickly.
>>96110474Yeah, depends on the model, but that's how a lot of people do army painting. It's kind of like a ghetto airbrush method. It'll be good enough for army painting if you just want to get lots out fast. Not good enough for display painting, so depends what you want.
>>96110489Iโve got a whole box set of marines I want to get to the table and play with friends without having a grey tide
As long as it looks pretty good Iโll be happy, Iโm not looking to win tournaments I just want to learn fundamentals and put out a bunch of minis in less than a few months
>>96110543Yeah easy. A common method is that you drybrush from black or grey up to white getting lighter with each layer so you have basically a greyscale model. Then you put contrast paints which are very transparent over the top, so you get easy shading and highlights. You could also just do it with colours directly. You'll be able to find a lot of videos on how to do it online, especially for marines.
Anyone have a good recommendation for where to get decent, pure flat surface large bases? I want to do a black/gold version of that marbling meme for fulgrims base but I feel like the standard GW textured base would be shit. I feel like this should be an easy item to find with printers so common, but I dont think im using the right words to search
>>96110699You can just sand the normal lumpy ones. Or maybe use a texture paste or some spackle and sand that. I'm sure you can find flat ones somewhere though.
With hindsight the slaanesh head might've been a mistake and there are a few other fuckups. Don't usually paint shit as big as this though so still reasonably happy.
Does flow aid act as an acrylic retarder? Didnโt someone say something akin to that here?
>>96104550I don't either. I don't even get how it's legal. Sure, I could trust each individual to handle resin safely, but I'm not stupid and I'm not going to. How many people just dump resin into the sink? That resin will go to the water treatment system and then shipped back to our drinking water. It's deranged
>>96111518with any luck that water will be exposed to the sun for a while before you drink it again, so it will only fuck with any other wildlife in the way
Calling this guy done.
Way too much work for 1/5 of a unit.
Just endless detail.
>>96111579Looks great though. I look at Gobbapalooza like some niggaz look at busts. Mine are still in a drawer.

>>96110968It's nice. My only bitchy criticism would be the

>>96111579You're the guy who complained about procrastinating his minis right? Congrats
>>96111730Pretty cool, anon.
>>96110968Yeah the blue makes me instantly think of tzeentch so that slaanesh head feels out of place. It still looks pretty good though
>>96111579I don't know if you were going for it deliberately but it has this comic book/cel shaded? feel and it looks very nice
>>96111730Pleasant colors and pretty clean
>>96111747I think it's a model that's always gonna look straight up better with black armour, and just fundamentally isn't that well suited to tzeentch/tksons but it is what it is. Didn't really see any proxies and fucking about with conversions isn't really my thing.
>>96111776It's not as bad as you make it sound, don't worry.
My nitpick would be fully fixed by making the big spaulder and canon blue, and the runes on the sword the same bordeaux hue as the wings.
I decided after some Feedback to rework the NMM to better reflect the surroundings in the scene I'm planning. Made it more shiny. Still not finished, but I think it looks much better.
>>96111518Reminds me of one guy at work, in research institute of all places - one day whole building had to be evacuated because resin container for his printer fell on the floor and spilled, he tried to clean it with paper towels and only after hour or something people on lower floors noticed strange smell and called OSH. It was kinda funny to watch him later insist to others and OSH inspector that there is absolutely no risk involved but I had to calm down one female coworker that exposure was short enough that her headache is only temporary.
>>96111749Yea thatยดs me. I think im gonna force myelf to finish some of the older projects i have going on.
On top of my head i have like 5+ projects jst half finished.
>>96111775>comic book/cel shaded?I hear this quite often but there is no conscious effort towards it. I think its just because i gravitate towards bright colors and stark contrasts.

Any experience with Vallejo Tropical water in here? I can find jack shit on that one in particular on google. What shade does it even dry to?
I hope I did it right this time. What do you think? Or should be more "grounded" aka more khaki/bronze? Have some tufts in washed out yellow and dried green shades ready.
>>96112143I really dig the ones that have the metal floor showing through. Yellow/cream shades look good too and the rocks don't feel out of place. I'd say it's good to go
>>96112151Good to hear. I kinda screwed up test pieces before. Or how one that had to be glued to the base right away due to some problems with feet have more orange ground than her coat would suggest.
If anyone want to know - metal floor was made with paper plant tray (it had that tiny pattern similar to metal floor) painted with metallic steel and smeared over with watered down sand terrain paste.
Working on a demon prince for my Khorne army. I'm confident he'll look cool when I'm done, but fuck me there's a lot of metallic trim to work through.
About red desert variant - do you think that some green (not vibrant green but rather weathered green) tufs would fit there or they should be left barren?
>ended up buying this whole batch for 30 bucksI love the second-hand market so much it's unreal

Started with the Indomitus box and wasn't sure what chapter to play, looked around online and thought dawnstone made for a nice fairly neutral color for the armor, kept going with that. Guess it could work as risen dark angels, with the black heresy armor being brighter now that they've "stepped into the light"?
We did it /wip/! Rejoice?
>>96113559My recently finished Kestrel Colonial Force and Shindenbutai groups. Too bad that my local Infinity scene organise games solely via Facebook group and I'm too scared to actually use it (at least made account and it was not automatically deleted) so they most likely never see actual game.

Of course, you can say these are different situations (playing with random people that already gathered at place for same purpose or how photography feel more like professional than private interaction) but still.
Thanks for good word anyway.
>>96112264>>96113526These look excellent. How'd you do them? I'm guessing a texture paste and varying sizes of rocks glued on. I really need to sort my rocks by size.
>>96115127Thanks. Pretty much yes, it was mostly Vallejo and AK terrain paste and "decorative" sand/rocks I grabbed at 1โฌ type of store (inb4 "lol buying sand", I thought that going outside, grabbing sand and collecting small rocks, then washing them and drying was too much work - and for that 1โฌ I got enough sand and stone for hundreds of bases). I also applied ideas listed in Flames of War guide for making desert bases one anon linked in previous thread. Upper ones were made with Vallejo sand paste (ground section) and AK concrete paste (rocky section), additionally decorated with smaller and bigger rocks and sand, lower (red desert) section was the same but instead of sand, I used "brown earth" paste. Rocky sections were then painted with AK "Grey Brown" with sand/smaller rocks with AK "British Khaki" for light desert and treated with AP "Light Tone" wash, while for red desert, rocks were painted in Vallejo "Burnt Red" and everything covered with Vallejo "rust" wash. Finally drybrushed light desert with Vallejo "Khaki Grey", AK "Medium Sand" and Vallejo "Pale Sand", while red desert was drybrushed with AK "medium rust", "orange brown" and "sunny skintone".
Does zenithal bring anything to the table if I'm just using opaque paints ie not Contrast/Speed paints?
>>96116275Not really, you'll see details more clearly and that's about it
>>96116275Yeah, you can use it to block out the areas for highlighting, and shadow. It definitely does bring something to the table in that way, you just kinda have to set your positions before you lose the zenithal under the opacity of the base layers.
I do it all the time, especially with models that show anatomy etc.
>>96116275Do it in your main colors, then you don't have to paint over all of it.

>>96120810>implying I prime at all. I just go straight in with colored spray paint and it works well enough
>>96120893priming gray seems to be the best choice imo
I prime light grey because of the primers I tried that was the nicest surface to paint over. it really doesn't matter the value of your undercoat if you're not using a speedpainting technique, as long as it's not a weird hue.
>>96118750Steppling might be the best way
Why not just use craft store paint?
>>96121064If you like it then go for it, I've tried and it's not for me.
>>96120810I used to always prime white, but I realised I wasn't having fun painting every single detail on every single model. Black makes it so I only have to paint what I see. And I can keep big portions of the model black, like their clothes black with a grey drybrush so I can actually have fun painting what I want to paint.
>>96121254Cathay stuff for Warhammer
>>96107767I find the sculpt incredibly fun to so because there's a lot of variations textures etc. to play with.
Starting on some Swordmasters, whatโs a good color to prime them? Planning on the old box art look with some minor changes. Iโm guessing white prime?
>>96121377white would be a good bet yeah because thats what you are mainly painting
>>96121365the NMM on Silver's coat isn't really doing it for me. It implies the coat trim is actually made of metal rather than maybe metallic threads (like you did for the embroidery on the shoulder).
It looks a bit off I think.
I'd also make the chin slightly colder.
Rest is nice. I like your brush marks.
I'm painting a big model so I figured I'd give the airbrush a try
>paint to thinner ratio is 0.01% too much thinner
Everything sputters, airbrush creates a layer of watery paint that doesn't stick and just constantly falls off, moves, clumps and generally looks like fucking garbage
>paint to thinner is 0.01% too much paint
Take me down to fucking clog city where the paint is speckly and it all looks shitty
I genuinely don't understand this artifact from hell. To make it better getting ratios with GW's dogshit pots is fucking hellish and every single paint has its own ratio and it all also depends on airbrush pressure, humidity, temperature, position of Saturn, Premier standings and political breakdown of the house of lords. How do you use this thing? I'm at my wit's end.
>>961232581) get a proper airbrush instead of a chinesium one, and a real compressor
2) actually control your paint:thinner ratios, stop eyeballing shit with pots, transfer paint to droppers
>>96121365Jim lad for sure looks like he's being played with
>>96123337It's an Iwata Neo with a decent compressor
>2) actually control your paint:thinner ratios, stop eyeballing shit with pots, transfer paint to droppersI genuinely can't. One day the same ratio I used the other day makes a watery mess, another day it works perfectly. It's fucking beyond me.
>>96123258What are you doing?
Use 20:80 vallejo flow imprower to thinner. Try 18-20 psi (not a rule for everything but try lower psi if you spray at 30).
A fist distance for priming and base coating, two fingers distance for layering. I use a lot more thinner/flow improver than paint and I don't get spiderwebbing. I also spray GW paint and I literally don't fiddle around with ratio, I just do 1-3 brush loads, it's all about feel
>>96123389And seeing if I get transparent paint along the wall of the airbrush cup*
>>96123385>Iwata Neoso a chinesium airbrush, got it
> One day the same ratio I used the other day makes a watery mess, another day it works perfectly.you're using paint from pots, you aren't getting the same ratios because you're eyeballing shit since pots don't allow precise ratios, droppers do
>>96123258first few attempts it feels like you want to throw the damn thing out from the window
give it time and you will get the hang of it and it becomes just a normal tool like any other
if i remember right some anons even make their own thinner out from IPA and water
>>96123385In the short run I'd suggest making your life easier by using pre thinned airbrush paint (not citadels)
>>96123389Also how much thinner are you using? You're not spraying pre-thinned airbrush paint but thick citadel paint. If you think you're using too much you're probably using too little. Fill that cup up. Just a reference for how much about I usually fill up, about half the cup.
Sup /WIP/
Happy Friday. Further refining my chrome marker/diluted ink pinwash method. Another Early Renaissance footknight. While the plume is elaborate, it is far from the most garish stylings of the era.
I think this guy is turning out not bad. I wasn't sure how the fluted armor would look if I were to shade it as well but I went for it and I think it's looking decent.
Gonna try to draw out some more highlights on the plumage and other areas. I think that's one of the downsides to this method when there is a lot of other color involved, you have to pull off the shading and highlighting well and with pretty good depth in between to match the reflective shiny appearance of the steel chrome.
Figure is by Steel Fist Miniatures out of the UK.
>>96123543>so a chinesium airbrush, got itNTA, but isn't Neo a good airbrush?
>>96123708that is great ready to play historical figurine but over 28mm scale you might want to dilute it down a bit
>>96123258If your thinning ratio is right, distance is right and pressure is right, then it might your trigger control. Layering should be light pull at the trigger and base coating and priming not that much harder. You only need full release when clearing tip drying
>>96123735to my knowledge, not really
It's a beginner airbrush by ""Iwata"" but the way they went in making it a beginner-tier is by basically rebranding a chinesium one, so you get a chink airbrush with chink QC but under the Iwata brand which lulls you into a false sense of security
>>96123927>want to buy HS Infinity CRplus>HS is owned by Iwata>Iwata is doing shit like thisUnpleasant implications.
>>96123735it's doesn't really matter, even a chinesium airbrush does work, the problem is elsewhere
if i had to guess id say the problem is using citadel paints, from the moment you open a pot it can have uneven chunks of dried paint and you won't notice them, also other brands thinners might not thin it smoothly
remember when around 2008 first airbrushed miniatures started appearing online and everyone in unison called bullshit and made it clear how it looked like shit, really everyone was in awe how cool those lighting effects looked
now almost 20 years after we have reached the point where its cool not to use airbrush because thats what every beginner starts with
pretty cool innit
>>96124155>even a chinesium airbrush does work,For basecoating/priming, yes. For any detailed work, no.
>>96124178how convenient that he is painting a big model then
>>96123708For anyone who might be wondering, the method basically goes.
1. Lay down a base coat of a steel metallic on the areas you will be applying the chrome. I use AK interactive natural steel, but any sort will work. Allow to dry and cure. I usually give it a day or two, may not be necessary but I do it.
2.lay down base coat on non-metallic parts. If you're going to do any dry brushing anywhere near the metal, this would be a good time to do it. You could also shade and highlight here but I generally wait until after the chrome is applied in case there is spillover and a cover up is necessary.
3. With the metallic parts cured, take the chrome marker (AK interactive makes some, steel chrome is good but the others spoil quickly even when sealed) and apply it over the metallics you intend to. Do your best not to slash into or disturb the stuff you have laid down already if you want a perfect finish. I usually go up and down like mowing a lawn. If you are doing a shield or flat surface and it appears uneven don't try to even it out immediately. Wait until it cures and re-apply it, focus on the problem areas. However, you can also create the appearance of battle damage or chinks in the armor by giving it a little poke or "slash" with something while still wet. Brass rod, hobby knife etc. Cure 72 hours.
3. Now what you want to do is mix some black ink (AK is good, again.) and a universal thinner. I use AK interactive 3rd gen universal thinner, it works really well for pinwashes. Then you take a very thin long bristled brush (pic rel, 25mm base for scale) and directly shade the crevices and recesses with the ink pinwash. Normal washes will not work for this purpose because they are not opaque enough to create those distinct lines. You can use them to create a weather appearance on parts though. Let the ink cure and dry.
4) Coat the armor with high gloss varnish or a shine enhancing varnish (I use gauzy agent)
Have a good one bros
>>96124202Trying to do preshading with chinesium airbrush is a suffering, even on chonky King Tiger in 1:35 scale. Not to mention stuff like dusting and other weathering-related techniques.
>>96106935 (OP)Thanks for making my picture the banner.
>>96124160You can usually tell an airbrushed mini. I decided it was very useful for me because of the speed of batch painting. I kinda prefer drybrushing but it doesn't really work unless 80-90% of the mini is armor
>>96124160That's every cutting edge gadget. People produce it cheaper, shit becomes ubiquitous, novelty wears off.
In the Victorian era bare lightbulbs and exposed cables would be shown off as something ultra-modern. Nowadays you'd see such shit in a basement.
Early aluminum was super expensive, so cutlery made of it was showy. Today it just looks cheap.
Same here. Airbrushes have long since left the hands of ~tr00 professional artists~, became affordable, and flooded youtube and ebay listings with garish OSLs and such. Now everyone and their dog can test an airbrush for himself and decide if and how much he wants to use it. It's become "just another tool".
>>96123958afaik Neo is the only time they pulled shit like this and H&S is generally solid
>>96123735It's a decent airbrush but this is /wip/ so anything but a pro level one that runs around 1k is gonna be called a shitty tool.
>>96123544>>96123603>>96123656I went to give it another run and I was definitely using too much thinner, I think I finally got a decent mix this time around and managed to get some pretty decent coats.
Still a bit frustrated with it. It's a skill issue but man I didn't expect it to be so unforgiving.
>>96125180It's one of those things you have to get just right, but after you do, it's generally smooth sailing. The other thing that filters people is the cleaning, go watch some Vince's videos about it.
>>96125180Yes. Airbrushing is about variables. Too high pressure you get spiderwebbing. Too thin you get spiderwebbing. You just need to keep working at it.

>>96125193Oh yeah the cleaning is totally fine, I did watch that video and I've never had a problem with it, and I've only had it clog once and it was super easy to fix.
>>96125212Yeah and there are a ton of them. I think I do have to transfer my citadel stuff to droppers because getting the right thinning with Vallejo is so much easier.
>>96124232i don't know what kind of shit do you guys do but i had a very chinesium airbrush for a long time and never had any problem with it, the trigger isn't the smoothest and had to deburr a bit the cap sure, but if works fine
i refuse to think they make them worse than 15 years ago
>>96125226Run airbrush cleaner through it a few times. Wipe the cup with some paper towel and isopropyl alcohol. Make sure the cup/chamber whatever it's called is clean, remove the needle, wipe it with isopropyl alcohol. Use a q tip or a drybrush to clean the nose of the air brush if there is a lot of dry paint there. You don't necessarily have to clean the needle if it looks fine, just make sure there is no dry paint on the tip.
You can fix tip drying as you paint by pulling the trigger farthest back just to clear dry tip. If it's still dry you might have to use a dry brush and some airbrush cleaner to wipe it away

I want to paint a dreadnought like an old timey tank, make it look all rough like historical models, except I don't actually know that much about dreadnoughts or space marines. Which model version do you think is the best bet for this? so far I'm leaning towards just I guess the normal one? Redemptor?
>>96125770This is why nothing you ever do will matter.
>>96129071deredeo has nice rounded shape just like an old tank
>>96125381Since your color already has quite a bit of green/yellow in it I'd say just do touchups with a dark blue-green and then blend them in. The speckling can be used but it'd be a better result in the end to make it look like a recess than a highlight, like it has impact marks from small arms fire, and then blend it into the surrounding area.
I feel you need to bring up the area around the Aquilla anyways (From how I'm reading the light) so I'd suggest doing the entire plate in a higher value and the side plates in a lower value. It'll make the highlights and shadows more dynamic in the end and you won't be able to see the speckling anymore.
Drybrushing could be a good solution as long as you don't add too much texture. A little bit of moisture on a stiff bristle brush and a thin paint in small circular motions. Practice on another flat surface and see how you like it.

Try shaking it more, if that's not doing the trick crack the lid a bit as there may be too much moisture in the environment, and swap out what liner you're using.

I don't doubt his expertise, but that's totally bullshit, right? I've never heard of anyone using that, Google returns nothing of note, and I'm sure there's a thousand contraindications right?
>>96130140Generally, natural hair brushes should maintain very fine tip when moistured even at bigger sizes. Many people assume that they should use 0s or 1s for eyes and details like that but they cannot load much paint and moisture and dries up too quickly as a result. Personally, I use size 2 for eyes because of that. It's really about how much paint itself you load on brush at the moment (if too much, gently roll while moving against palette to squeeze excess) and how you touch the surface so all about experience and keep trying until you get it.

>>96131970If you work with a lot of metal, or resin or build MDF buildings or do a lot of basing using superglue for larger rocks and etc. get yourself a pack of these. They are called glue loopers, fairly expensive at 25 leafbucks for 10 (I may have been paying a premium). However, in the middle there you can see one attached to a handle and that is the first one I broke out of the package and I've been using it for nearly 4 years now almost every day. They're designed for superthin superglue but you can use any cyanoacrylate. The advantage lies in using a thicker super glue to tack the resin, metal or whatever material into place, and then using the superthin to really bolt it down. Works just like your standard tamiya extra thin, except obviously it is metal instead of a brush. You just touch it to the seam and it flows right in. For thicker glue, they are handy for precision gluing if you do a lot of sub-assemblies where painted parts have very specific contact points. They make ones specifically for drawing thick lines of thicker cyanoacrylate but I have not bothered with them because the standard ones work for that purpose fine. Burn off excess or dried glue and you're good to go. They come with 4 small sized, 4 medium and 2 large. They're designed so you can stick them into a shitty hobby knife handle, I use the ones from the dollar store. Or you could also use some wire and a pencil or other piece of wood if you wanted a parallel handle for it, or otherwise if you want to save a dollar or two for a soda.
All in all highly recommended they last forever, pretty sure they are made of steel and if you use superglue a lot in your basing or otherwise you should grab yourself some because you will end up using it nonstop.
Not a shill, just like to share effective tools with other hobbyists when I can.

i visited the big city this past week and swung around the pharmacy on my way to LGS so i could get some size 10 scalpels
it took 20 minutes to go in and out because after 4 clerks had their little pow wow and having their manager clear me out just by looking at me i finally got my 2 hobby knives
and i dont even live in england
I have an idea of how I would repose Dante, but I'm not a fan of the helmet. Is there anything I could reasonably do to take away or hide the Tacticus helmet part and bring it back to the old version a little bit?
Today's hobbying, done cleaning and assembling the warpsmith, I hope painting him won't be as annoying.
It was a rainy day so instead of priming him I went ahead and cleaned and assembled two legionaries to go with him.
>>96132525>Is there anything I could reasonably do to take away or hide the Tacticus helmet part and bring it back to the old version a little bit?Get a third party bit
>>96132525No the problem with the primaris helmet is that its the face details are way to small like someone strapped a childs mask atop a normal helmet.
Just use the original head there is nothing wrong with it. His owld pistol is cooler too.
>>96133079I think the implication is he cant get a hold of the original head
>>96132525chop the ears down, cut the bottom off the halo and slot the halo down where the ears are cut at. if you are any good at tube crafting, cut the halo a bit shorter and still slot it on the ears but add the classic style extra tubes to cover the ear cuts just below the halo cuts.
as someone else pointed out, the mask seems smaller on the new helmet which is a bit of a issue. it seems flatter to me where the classic wraps around the face and bends back more.
the lower tubes on the classic are larger and more exposed than the new one, as well the upper tubes on the classic are larger than those too. lots of room to craft some tube and cover up the parts of the helmet you dont like.
additional tube for the gun if you are any good at tube crafting. toob, pipe, wire, hose
>>96132042sounds like a wire works about the same, you can also bend it into a loop too
>>96132042I genuinely don't understand the problem this is supposed to be solving?
>>96132525>Is there anything I could reasonably doScavenge a nicer looking helmet from that stack of old 5th Edition Sanguinary Guard kits over in the corner. Each box only ,made five guys, but gave you something like 20 helmets!
>>96133079>like someone strapped a childs mask atop a normal helmet.I can never unsee that now, thanks for that.
>>96133079>original headthe original body/head is a one piece slab of pewter from what I can remember (maybe it's resin now). I'd be impressed if anyone would bother/ be able to get just the head from that model. Especially because you'd be buying another character just for the tiniest bit different head which you wouldn't even notice at a glance.

If you can't handle receiving criticism (or even just seeing it directed at another) then /WIP/ is not the place for you.
Hell, 4chan is not the place for you!
>>96135905The only thing more useless than a mediocre artist is a bad critic. There was no meaningful content in your "criticism".
You wanna be big dick expert telling people how it is? Try using your words to address shortcomings and explain techniques and ideas for improvement.
Otherwise shut up.
>>96135922If anyone needs to shut up it's you, the only thing you're doing is whining and it's not even about someones painting.
>>96135931Get fucked manchild. I don't have time to make you a better person, so I'm going to have to settle for helping others be better painters.
>>96135010I think the bases are a little plain, but that's not terrible. I think I'm seeing very delicate edge highlights, but that's not necessarily bad; you may want to be a bit more aggressive in what edges get. I think what you may be lacking in the red sections is some depth, so I personally might go in with a pin wash for some of the recesses and undersides of armor plates.
Overall I wouldn't be upset seeing these on a table, but there is some room for improvement. If you don't want to do anything drastic but still want to give them a little touch to elevate them you might want to give the helmet lenses a light jeweling highlight or florescent effect. A light dash of white along them and then a sweep of a florescent orange would give the goggles some more glow and help them contrast against the yellow helmets more.
>>96135931Anyone can tell you've never spent any time in a creative space, or even a thread about creating anything on 4chan. It's transparent how pathetic and antisocial you are. You've done this whole crusade against artist thing multiple times from multiple "I'm retarded and don't want to learn/have nothing interesting to say" angles. And you're still posting as if you're proving something. Just fuck off, these threads aren't for you.
>>96134652Love me some skellingtons, always have tons of personalities. The blue is a nice pair with all of the earth tones, and the browns and reds are nice supporting colors. Been trying to work on little things but nothing too extensive. Still need odorless thinner so it's been a few months since I've ben able to paint. Bit of irony it's been a rough couple months, so if I had thinner I'd be annoyed I wasn't able to paint anyway lol.
Anyone know of a good human figure file I can open in blender and import some props I have to make an STL to print? Not something that has normal human proportions but also not overly stylized. I've seen some browser programs to make your own STL figure, but its all too stylized for D&D and I can't import my own files for the helmet and stuff.
>>96135905Criticism is supposed to be helpful. Otherwise, what's the point?
>>96135010Marines and bases look clean, but plain.
Might be the picture, but it seems like you did very little highlights to the red. And either very very little wash, or none at all. I would absolutely go heavier with a wash, espcially for the metallic parts) but thats my taste.
One of players is leaving for college early, so we had to end our Kingdom Death campaign this week. We beat the Watcher, and then had enough time to throw the remaining survivors at the Giga Lion, which they slew.
The story is left with an uncertain ending as the remaining 10 survivors take their 4 lanterns into the unknown.

What is the best way to store your brushes anyway? Up, Down or Horizontal?
>>96136971down or horizontal when drying, after that it doesn't matter
>>96136971i store my brushes in my white hands
i have little clips on the back of my brushes that i used to attach them to a little string, but the string broke, so now i just use the clips to magnetize the brushes to my work light arm, hanging point down

it's finished, had to partly repaint the crown because one of the spikes broke as i dropped it while varnishing
also better photos
>>96135976The bases were literally just dirt that I picked out some bigger rocks in grey to look like more rubble. I didn't plan on it, but once I started doing it it made it look a lot better than before.
My highlights do tend to be really thin and they don't show up well in pictures. I did Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz for the first highlight, and a small bit of orange for certain spots. Should I go thicker with the edge highlights with the first highlight color in general to make it more apparent? I think it's because I usually look at them very closely so I can see, but then I don't normally look at the from arms length afterwards.
What is a good shade color for red? I've been using Agrax but it doesn't add much. Would a contrasting color wash look better and add more depth than just brown? I have a good number of wash colors.
>>96136357The highlights are very thin and don't show up great in pictures. Whenever I try to go heavy with a wash I get that white buildup, so I've been trying to be careful with it.

I wonder, has anyone tried some sort of Zorn palette exercise when painting minis? Like using a very limited palette to paint the whole mini and learn to get a good contrast and colour scheme with limited paints. Then again acrylics don't mix nearly as well as oils.
>>96139277But that is regular brush soap? It's the bog standard that you will find in any art supply store.
>>96139277I found it rather expensive, at least in my case. I keep using normal soap (not liquid one, the cube ones) and shampoo from time to time.
Guys, do you have any tips to do this kind of cool calligraphy on marine parchments?

This is my only metallic color. Do you guys think it'd be possible to make different shades of it by mixing it? Would different tones of grey do it? Or mix with white or black?
>>96141071mixing will lead to the metal flakes separating, pretty quickly depending on the paint. You might be able to do something like 1:1 but for example I was trying to make a blue metallic with model air steel and an ink and it immediately turned splotchy and separated, so I just painted the ink over manually. Though model air is pretty thin but the separation is something I can see just when I don't shake a bottle enough before use.
>>96141109Thanks for the heads up so I don't waste my paint. Would an undercoat help then? Paint it over black or very light gray depending on the shade I want? Obviously wouldn't be perfect but could be something?
>>96140921hell yeah, is that 5th edition?
>>96141134maybe a little bit, washes/thinned washes or glaze work with acrylics might also help
since the only regular metallics I have are steel and gunmetal (model air is nearly black) I was gonna try mixing them to get a middleground but that's a different scenario
>>96141109Shit separates on my wet palette even if I don't do anything to it after not too much time.
>>96141275yeah I don't even try the wet palette, model air is really nice cause it's thinned but also has nearly one coat coverage and I can just damp my brush and use it
>>96141140or earlier yeah
Here's a snek I finished up, decided to do just metal for the axe after some diff color schemes.
An evil fighter and elf touchup I did, what do you guys think about the sea green base? It's supposed to be a water temple vibe
>>96141071>>96141109Doesn't mixing ink work? I thought that was a hack
>>96141972I'd have to research inks and how they work first. No idea what you would buy and how you would apply it
>>96141972I thought so too but with vallejo game ink and model air at least the metal separates too much, haven't tried with different types
>>96141985it's just artist acrylic inks at hobby lobby or equivalents or ink lines from mini paint brands if you can find them
>>96141071You'll have better luck accepting that the base color is as bright as you can go and doing thin washes to create midrange and shadow. Colored washes are nice too, blues purples and reds especially.
Any idea for a good substitute to vallejo metal chrome? I like shinning clear metallics, and this one of the best silvers I've ever used.
Does Rhinox Hide or similar dark brown work for chipping battle damage on any color? Or would you want something different for blue or red?
>>96142237I'm not sure. You want silver? Usually I'd say Vallejo game air silver but since it's discontinued VMC air silver.
>>96142358Noted. I want to start doing battle damage and was struggling to find anyting for specific colors.
>>96142243dark brown always works but you can also do a lighter/faded version of the base colour for lighter chipping.

>>96142008I really like the color combo on these guys, the two metallics being fairly close in tone works nicely with the blue. Is the basing a textured paste? It almost looks flocked but I cant quite tell
