I know itโ€™a far quicker to use a torn up sponge to add distress texturing, but I find it to be messy and inconsistent in quality (sometimes too much paint, too little, kind of runny, etc.). Manually applying it may take ages but the end result simply looks more consistent.

Time to slowly batch paint the first level of highlights, then second level and finally little spots of Rhinox Hide for the damage. Canโ€™t wait to get back to my Orks after this detour into Space Marines.

Stop that. This shit is the perfect color. You have to layer it a little to get best results, and varnish after. But every time I paint with it and spill any my wife freaks out because she thinks I got hurt.

Totally new to mini painting and I want to know if I would be able to produce solid results by priming a mini and then aggressively drybrushing multiple lighter layers onto it to build up color and shading and contrast. Then touch up some edges, paint weapons and pauldrons, and nice and easy done quickly.

Yeah, depends on the model, but that's how a lot of people do army painting. It's kind of like a ghetto airbrush method. It'll be good enough for army painting if you just want to get lots out fast. Not good enough for display painting, so depends what you want.

Yeah easy. A common method is that you drybrush from black or grey up to white getting lighter with each layer so you have basically a greyscale model. Then you put contrast paints which are very transparent over the top, so you get easy shading and highlights. You could also just do it with colours directly. You'll be able to find a lot of videos on how to do it online, especially for marines.

I want to do a black/gold version of that marbling meme for fulgrims base but I feel like the standard GW textured base would be shit. You can just sand the normal lumpy ones. Or maybe use a texture paste or some spackle and sand that. I'm sure you can find flat ones somewhere though.

I don't either. I don't even get how it's legal. Sure, I could trust each individual to handle resin safely, but I'm not stupid and I'm not going to. How many people just dump resin into the sink? That resin will go to the water treatment system and then shipped back to our drinking water. It's deranged

Reminds me of one guy at work, in research institute of all places - one day whole building had to be evacuated because resin container for his printer fell on the floor and spilled, he tried to clean it with paper towels and only after hour or something people on lower floors noticed strange smell and called OSH. It was kinda funny to watch him later insist to others and OSH inspector that there is absolutely no risk involved but I had to calm down one female coworker that exposure was short enough that her headache is only temporary.

I have classic citadel pots that are old enough to drink and are still perfectly brushable. I also have newer citadel pots that dried out in 2 years despite closing them carefully, maybe because I forgot to seal them hermetically or something. The relative shittiness of new generations' lids is widely known.

Of course, you can say these are different situations (playing with random people that already gathered at place for same purpose or how photography feel more like professional than private interaction) but still.

Thanks for good word anyway.

Thanks. Pretty much yes, it was mostly Vallejo and AK terrain paste and "decorative" sand/rocks I grabbed at 1โ‚ฌ type of store (inb4 "lol buying sand", I thought that going outside, grabbing sand and collecting small rocks, then washing them and drying was too much work - and for that 1โ‚ฌ I got enough sand and stone for hundreds of bases). I also applied ideas listed in Flames of War guide for making desert bases one anon linked in previous thread. Upper ones were made with Vallejo sand paste (ground section) and AK concrete paste (rocky section), additionally decorated with smaller and bigger rocks and sand, lower (red desert) section was the same but instead of sand, I used "brown earth" paste. Rocky sections were then painted with AK "Grey Brown" with sand/smaller rocks with AK "British Khaki" for light desert and treated with AP "Light Tone" wash, while for red desert, rocks were painted in Vallejo "Burnt Red" and everything covered with Vallejo "rust" wash. Finally drybrushed light desert with Vallejo "Khaki Grey", AK "Medium Sand" and Vallejo "Pale Sand", while red desert was drybrushed with AK "medium rust", "orange brown" and "sunny skintone".

Yeah, you can use it to block out the areas for highlighting, and shadow. It definitely does bring something to the table in that way, you just kinda have to set your positions before you lose the zenithal under the opacity of the base layers.

I do it all the time, especially with models that show anatomy etc.

I'm thinking of maybe using this method to at least draw in the scales with bright green skin underneath and dark purple scales on top or the other way around. Also I don't know how I'm supposed to transition between opposite colours anyway.

Everything sputters, airbrush creates a layer of watery paint that doesn't stick and just constantly falls off, moves, clumps and generally looks like fucking garbage
>paint to thinner is 0.01% too much paint
Take me down to fucking clog city where the paint is speckly and it all looks shitty

I genuinely don't understand this artifact from hell. To make it better getting ratios with GW's dogshit pots is fucking hellish and every single paint has its own ratio and it all also depends on airbrush pressure, humidity, temperature, position of Saturn, Premier standings and political breakdown of the house of lords. How do you use this thing? I'm at my wit's end.

What are you doing?

Use 20:80 vallejo flow imprower to thinner. Try 18-20 psi (not a rule for everything but try lower psi if you spray at 30).

A fist distance for priming and base coating, two fingers distance for layering. I use a lot more thinner/flow improver than paint and I don't get spiderwebbing. I also spray GW paint and I literally don't fiddle around with ratio, I just do 1-3 brush loads, it's all about feel

Sup /WIP/

Happy Friday. Further refining my chrome marker/diluted ink pinwash method. Another Early Renaissance footknight. While the plume is elaborate, it is far from the most garish stylings of the era.

I think this guy is turning out not bad. I wasn't sure how the fluted armor would look if I were to shade it as well but I went for it and I think it's looking decent.

Gonna try to draw out some more highlights on the plumage and other areas. I think that's one of the downsides to this method when there is a lot of other color involved, you have to pull off the shading and highlighting well and with pretty good depth in between to match the reflective shiny appearance of the steel chrome.

Figure is by Steel Fist Miniatures out of the UK.

It's a beginner airbrush by ""Iwata"" but the way they went in making it a beginner-tier is by basically rebranding a chinesium one, so you get a chink airbrush with chink QC but under the Iwata brand which lulls you into a false sense of security

For anyone who might be wondering, the method basically goes.

1. Lay down a base coat of a steel metallic on the areas you will be applying the chrome. I use AK interactive natural steel, but any sort will work. Allow to dry and cure. I usually give it a day or two, may not be necessary but I do it.

2.lay down base coat on non-metallic parts. If you're going to do any dry brushing anywhere near the metal, this would be a good time to do it. You could also shade and highlight here but I generally wait until after the chrome is applied in case there is spillover and a cover up is necessary.

3. With the metallic parts cured, take the chrome marker (AK interactive makes some, steel chrome is good but the others spoil quickly even when sealed) and apply it over the metallics you intend to. Do your best not to slash into or disturb the stuff you have laid down already if you want a perfect finish. I usually go up and down like mowing a lawn. If you are doing a shield or flat surface and it appears uneven don't try to even it out immediately. Wait until it cures and re-apply it, focus on the problem areas. However, you can also create the appearance of battle damage or chinks in the armor by giving it a little poke or "slash" with something while still wet. Brass rod, hobby knife etc. Cure 72 hours.

3. Now what you want to do is mix some black ink (AK is good, again.) and a universal thinner. I use AK interactive 3rd gen universal thinner, it works really well for pinwashes. Then you take a very thin long bristled brush (pic rel, 25mm base for scale) and directly shade the crevices and recesses with the ink pinwash. Normal washes will not work for this purpose because they are not opaque enough to create those distinct lines. You can use them to create a weather appearance on parts though. Let the ink cure and dry.
4) Coat the armor with high gloss varnish or a shine enhancing varnish (I use gauzy agent)

Have a good one bros

You can usually tell an airbrushed mini. I decided it was very useful for me because of the speed of batch painting. I kinda prefer drybrushing but it doesn't really work unless 80-90% of the mini is armor

That's every cutting edge gadget. People produce it cheaper, shit becomes ubiquitous, novelty wears off.
In the Victorian era bare lightbulbs and exposed cables would be shown off as something ultra-modern. Nowadays you'd see such shit in a basement.
Early aluminum was super expensive, so cutlery made of it was showy. Today it just looks cheap.
Same here. Airbrushes have long since left the hands of ~tr00 professional artists~, became affordable, and flooded youtube and ebay listings with garish OSLs and such. Now everyone and their dog can test an airbrush for himself and decide if and how much he wants to use it. It's become "just another tool".

Run airbrush cleaner through it a few times. Wipe the cup with some paper towel and isopropyl alcohol. Make sure the cup/chamber whatever it's called is clean, remove the needle, wipe it with isopropyl alcohol. Use a q tip or a drybrush to clean the nose of the air brush if there is a lot of dry paint there. You don't necessarily have to clean the needle if it looks fine, just make sure there is no dry paint on the tip.

You can fix tip drying as you paint by pulling the trigger farthest back just to clear dry tip. If it's still dry you might have to use a dry brush and some airbrush cleaner to wipe it away

You could do that, but personally I don't find the need because once you learn how to dilute paint you'll just know when it's right.

But if you want to be super scientific and have mix things perfectly then yeah you'd probably need droppers.

Since your color already has quite a bit of green/yellow in it I'd say just do touchups with a dark blue-green and then blend them in. The speckling can be used but it'd be a better result in the end to make it look like a recess than a highlight, like it has impact marks from small arms fire, and then blend it into the surrounding area.

I feel you need to bring up the area around the Aquilla anyways (From how I'm reading the light) so I'd suggest doing the entire plate in a higher value and the side plates in a lower value. It'll make the highlights and shadows more dynamic in the end and you won't be able to see the speckling anymore.

Drybrushing could be a good solution as long as you don't add too much texture. A little bit of moisture on a stiff bristle brush and a thin paint in small circular motions. Practice on another flat surface and see how you like it.

Sounds like you're not properly mixing the medium. It also depends heavily on what the pigment you're working with is, they're all very different from each other.

Try shaking it more, if that's not doing the trick crack the lid a bit as there may be too much moisture in the environment, and swap out what liner you're using.

Parchment paper is your friend but they're not all made equal, some are much better quality than the others. Also if your sponge is fucking drowning it'll oversaturate and cause a split.

Fine balance is key.

Generally, natural hair brushes should maintain very fine tip when moistured even at bigger sizes. Many people assume that they should use 0s or 1s for eyes and details like that but they cannot load much paint and moisture and dries up too quickly as a result. Personally, I use size 2 for eyes because of that. It's really about how much paint itself you load on brush at the moment (if too much, gently roll while moving against palette to squeeze excess) and how you touch the surface so all about experience and keep trying until you get it.

well it's a big mystery then maybe he's still a paid shill (which would be a pretty weird setup given the circumstances), or maybe he's like me and just grabs whatever the fuck is closest to hand or maybe it's a balancing act because he thinks his audience still prefer him to use citadel paints. If you work with a lot of metal, or resin or build MDF buildings or do a lot of basing using superglue for larger rocks and etc. get yourself a pack of these. They are called glue loopers, fairly expensive at 25 leafbucks for 10 (I may have been paying a premium). However, in the middle there you can see one attached to a handle and that is the first one I broke out of the package and I've been using it for nearly 4 years now almost every day. They're designed for superthin superglue but you can use any cyanoacrylate. The advantage lies in using a thicker super glue to tack the resin, metal or whatever material into place, and then using the superthin to really bolt it down. Works just like your standard tamiya extra thin, except obviously it is metal instead of a brush. You just touch it to the seam and it flows right in. For thicker glue, they are handy for precision gluing if you do a lot of sub-assemblies where painted parts have very specific contact points. They make ones specifically for drawing thick lines of thicker cyanoacrylate but I have not bothered with them because the standard ones work for that purpose fine. Burn off excess or dried glue and you're good to go. They come with 4 small sized, 4 medium and 2 large. They're designed so you can stick them into a shitty hobby knife handle, I use the ones from the dollar store. Or you could also use some wire and a pencil or other piece of wood if you wanted a parallel handle for it, or otherwise if you want to save a dollar or two for a soda.

All in all highly recommended they last forever, pretty sure they are made of steel and if you use superglue a lot in your basing or otherwise you should grab yourself some because you will end up using it nonstop.

Not a shill, just like to share effective tools with other hobbyists when I can.

chop the ears down, cut the bottom off the halo and slot the halo down where the ears are cut at. if you are any good at tube crafting, cut the halo a bit shorter and still slot it on the ears but add the classic style extra tubes to cover the ear cuts just below the halo cuts.
as someone else pointed out, the mask seems smaller on the new helmet which is a bit of a issue. it seems flatter to me where the classic wraps around the face and bends back more.
the lower tubes on the classic are larger and more exposed than the new one, as well the upper tubes on the classic are larger than those too. lots of room to craft some tube and cover up the parts of the helmet you dont like.
additional tube for the gun if you are any good at tube crafting. toob, pipe, wire, hose

the original body/head is a one piece slab of pewter from what I can remember (maybe it's resin now). I'd be impressed if anyone would bother/ be able to get just the head from that model. I think I'm seeing very delicate edge highlights, but that's not necessarily bad; you may want to be a bit more aggressive in what edges get. I think what you may be lacking in the red sections is some depth, so I personally might go in with a pin wash for some of the recesses and undersides of armor plates.

Overall I wouldn't be upset seeing these on a table, but there is some room for improvement. If you don't want to do anything drastic but still want to give them a little touch to elevate them you might want to give the helmet lenses a light jeweling highlight or florescent effect. A light dash of white along them and then a sweep of a florescent orange would give the goggles some more glow and help them contrast against the yellow helmets more.

And you're still posting as if you're proving something. Just fuck off, these threads aren't for you.

Love me some skellingtons, always have tons of personalities. The blue is a nice pair with all of the earth tones, and the browns and reds are nice supporting colors. Been trying to work on little things but nothing too extensive. Still need odorless thinner so it's been a few months since I've ben able to paint. Bit of irony it's been a rough couple months, so if I had thinner I'd be annoyed I wasn't able to paint anyway lol.

Anyone know of a good human figure file I can open in blender and import some props I have to make an STL to print? Not something that has normal human proportions but also not overly stylized. I've seen some browser programs to make your own STL figure, but its all too stylized for D&D and I can't import my own files for the helmet and stuff.

Marines and bases look clean, but plain.
Might be the picture, but it seems like you did very little highlights to the red. And either very very little wash, or none at all. I would absolutely go heavier with a wash, espcially for the metallic parts) but thats my taste.

One of players is leaving for college early, so we had to end our Kingdom Death campaign this week. We beat the Watcher, and then had enough time to throw the remaining survivors at the Giga Lion, which they slew.

The story is left with an uncertain ending as the remaining 10 survivors take their 4 lanterns into the unknown.

The bases were literally just dirt that I picked out some bigger rocks in grey to look like more rubble. I didn't plan on it, but once I started doing it it made it look a lot better than before.
My highlights do tend to be really thin and they don't show up well in pictures. I did Mephiston Red, Evil Sunz for the first highlight, and a small bit of orange for certain spots. Should I go thicker with the edge highlights with the first highlight color in general to make it more apparent? I think it's because I usually look at them very closely so I can see, but then I don't normally look at the from arms length afterwards.
What is a good shade color for red? I've been using Agrax but it doesn't add much. Would a contrasting color wash look better and add more depth than just brown? I have a good number of wash colors.
>>96136357
The highlights are very thin and don't show up great in pictures. Whenever I try to go heavy with a wash I get that white buildup, so I've been trying to be careful with it.

mixing will lead to the metal flakes separating, pretty quickly depending on the paint. You might be able to do something like 1:1 but for example I was trying to make a blue metallic with model air steel and an ink and it immediately turned splotchy and separated, so I just painted the ink over manually. Though model air is pretty thin but the separation is something I can see just when I don't shake a bottle enough before use.

You'll have better luck accepting that the base color is as bright as you can go and doing thin washes to create midrange and shadow. Colored washes are nice too, blues purples and reds especially.

Any idea for a good substitute to vallejo metal chrome? I like shinning clear metallics, and this one of the best silvers I've ever used.

Does Rhinox Hide or similar dark brown work for chipping battle damage on any color? Or would you want something different for blue or red?

I'm not sure. You want silver? Usually I'd say Vallejo game air silver but since it's discontinued VMC air silver.

dark brown always works but you can also do a lighter/faded version of the base colour for lighter chipping.

I really like the color combo on these guys, the two metallics being fairly close in tone works nicely with the blue. Is the basing a textured paste? It almost looks flocked but I cant quite tell
