This is why we play Battle-cruisers almost exclusively. Long splashy games with back and forth swings. So much fun, and you get to play with a lot of nice cards.

Trying to make a full 100 of custom cards but didn't want to spam the thread with a massive number of custom cards for critique.
The general themes for the Drukhari deck I have so far are Bloodthirst, Hellbent, Morbid triggers, and +/- counter manipulation. Wanted Vect to kind of just be a generic draw engine that denied resources and was annoying to remove to fit his master manipulator themes.

I originally had him as a horrible Stax commander because his main thing he is known for in the tabletop these days is disrupting other people's stratagems (cost increases are still called "Vects" in the game). But I wanted him to have something generically useful enough that the rest of the deck can be a hodgepodge of Dark Eldar themes and not lean in to lockdown too much.

By running a commander that is not integral to the deck strategy, or by running green. If your deck relies on the commander and it is 5+ mana and not in green, you're gonna have a bad time. The game may not be over by turn 5 but if you are literally still just dropping lands and rocks to finally get going by then, you are waaaaaay behind and that's not what I'd want my deck to do on average.

Even precons will have an established board and be a threat by turn 5. If your deck needs that big drop commander to function then you better be in green or running farewell and austere command or some shit to reset the board for when you FINALLY decide to start playing.

Yeah, I guess elves makes the most sense. And there is plenty of precedent for them in black. Red is actually much rarer for them. My only leaning towards vampires is that functionally that's what they are both in card mechanics and in lore, just elf vampires. Magic doesn't ever really make such a distinction though.
Elf creature type has very few interactions with opponent cards but Vampire has a fair number that could be interesting to allow to happen.

One of my favorite decks is my Avacyn deck. It's by no means CEDH, but I then loathe CEDH and combifaggotry so I don't care.

different anon here, this is the reason I actually dislike UB products. When something unique is printed in a UB, it means that I'm forced to either engage with that UB, or forgo having access to that. And often times, that comes at a huge deficit when you want to play higher power, or special gimmicks.
There's absolutely nothing that matches the power of The One Ring, and Orcish Bowmasters are insanely pushed. If I want to take my Black, or high-powered decks to the next level, I HAVE to engage with that UB to keep powering up. If I want to play with more Saga themes, most of the good support is locked away in UBs (Tom, Terra, the Summons, Jarl from AC).

It would be one thing if WotC had continued with the Universe Within printings. I'd be fine with UBs having mechanically unique cards, if it meant that later on there would be a real card with it as well. But, right now, I have no choice but to engage with them, or limit myself.

Since everyone wants to grab [brand], shit sells out fast, and it's not for anything that couldn't otherwise be printed in another set.
A collector's booster of Final Fantasy in my LGS is going for over $1k, and looking online that's not uncommon. There are people that are pulling the "new iphone box" scam on tcgplayer with that shit. I know the preemptive ">collector booster," but the regular packs aren't much better, for what little there is, and that shit bubbles up.
When deckbuilding, I have to account for shit like Vivi, but I as a price-conscious player do not have access to Vivi. That creates a problem, because that case is extremely common for UB slop, and since it's tied to an IP WotC has to license, those game pieces will most likely never be reprinted. It is a soft reserved list.

I really want to compare this to Disney for a moment and all of their media acquisition. Disney in a sense is able to offer its own competition, so if one of its product lines, like the MCU or latest Star Wars series is underwhelming, it can offer an alternative alongside its potential competitors. They can offer a disappointing product and still retain consumers, it would take a widespread collapse of their catalog to force a mass consumer exodus. Magic does not have that. Magic's "internal competition" are other formats, but if the game pieces are shared, then them being fucked ruins a fuckton of formats. It makes more sense from a consumer's point of view getting into the product to pick up a simpler game that lacks this pricing-out flavor-suicide problem. That's partially why Lorcana is doing so well, because Wizards lost a significant portion of the player market, a space Lorcana filled in.

There's so many small combos you find with it when you play it in Mardu it's not even funny. Just keep it in and keep playing with it and you'll find dumb little interactions here and there.
