Even GW realized it was stupid, which is why they don't do it when they have a clean slate like Epic and the related BFG, LOTR, Kill Team, etc.

I will say that CP and Strats have given the game some TCG-esque combos, which actually does provide some justification for IGOUGO, but it's still ass. Imagine playing fucking Yugioh, but you have almost no handtraps to interact and sit their for 30 minutes.

There's a cycle where other games flourish after GW screws the pooch. And then GW eventually makes a better edition and everyone goes running back. I saw this during 7th a decade ago. Lots of people here were playing Dropzone Commander, Malifaux, and Bolt Action. And then the major shakeup of 8E brought a lot of people back to 40K.

We know this because the most successful rulesets outside the 40k space have listbuilding and scenarios for pickup. What are the most successful historicals? Bolt Action and FoW - WW2Hammer with a a focus on pickup play. What about the /awg/s - it's stuff like Infinity, Malifaux, WMH with a strong emphasis on pickup play.

People say they want campaign games with their bros, but they sure don't act like it.
