Two things are the problem:

>threats that snowball
>faster threats

The faster a game goes, the less turns of back and forth, the less decision making, the less chance for mana to equalize. This is extremely obvious when you look at total mana pips available to both players based on turn advantage, and especially as players start to miss land drops
say both players stop at 4 mana, it goes:
>1 vs 0 (infinite advantage)
>3 vs 1 (200%)
>6 vs 3 (100%)
>10 vs 6 (67%)
>14 vs 10 (40%)
>18 vs 14 (28%)

The other issue is just playing out cards that create threats that must be dealt with reactively, but create snowballing advantage each turn they stay on the battlefield. Every 2-3 mana creature now and even heartfire hero at 1 mana were giving increasing threat every turn they stay out. You can't stabilize by just playing an equal or bigger creature and blocking

The OG of this and most distilled, if not most offensive, example, is luminarch aspirant
Opponent has turn 2 luminarch, you have turn 2 luminarch? You fucking lose. You can never block, you never grow out of range of their cards, you're always behind. They have turn 2 luminarch, you play a 2/2 on your turn 2? They will attack through it with a 3/3 luminarch
Now its threats spraying card advantage, +1/+1 counters from landfall, recursion, attack triggers ,etc.

Magic is a game with relatively low life totals, a 2/2 is a faster clock than you think when a lot of turns can be stumbling or fumbling, big stats with sneakily high cost (lots of colored pips) isn't viable and hasn't been ever because of how good multicolor decks are.

I can't tell how important this will be to the insect deck. The deck desperately needs more ways to get to 4 mana by turn 3, but this seems so conditional I don't know if it'll be able to get the job done without letting shields go down. Keep in mind that it's two mana per turn to tap the thing and draw 1+charge counters. It's practically accumulated knowledge on a stick. It's not worth it in standard. But in coomander which is what the card was designed for, it's better than the X sources since you don't have to tap out when you want to draw. With enough charge counters it is strictly better than X cards.

If I use its ability, it brings a white, red or red and white card out for free from the deck, but if it's a tier spell like, say, Restoration Magic, I'd need to pay the additional cost if I wanted to use a higher tier, it's only the initial cost that's covered, yeah?

It's been a top tier deck for over a decade straight, they're pretty set on not banning it (which is why it's the only Modern deck I play in paper).
It's probably the second best deck in the format after Energy (it's always had a winning matchup vs Energy, so it's been one of the strongest things to do in the format for most of post-MH3 Modern) but Modern has 10+ viable decks and nothing is too oppressive.
Amulet crushes creature decks and hates control and faster combos.
Amulet is weak to blue decks playing counterspells (which no one wants to play), specific sideboard cards (which no one wants to run), and learning how the deck works (which no one wants to do).

Yeah just seeing it play looks like for counter spells you need a lot and cheap in your opening hand due to how fast it can pop off, not even sure that’s possible with how tight blue mana is on turn 2 and a lack of free counter spells. Blood moon looks like it crushes titan, a pithing needle or graveyard hate could do as well

Amulet only goes off turn 2 with double Amulet hands, which aren't too common.
It is very resilient for a combo deck though.
There are several blue decks that you can play if you never want to lose to Amulet.
A local UB Frog player packs Counterspell and Subtlety in the main and boards in sets of Flood Moon and Ashiok (the absolute strongest Amulet hoser). Have to pray to dodge that guy.
Belcher dumpsters Amulet even harder than that.
Then there are shitty meme decks like Merfolk that can't possibly lose the matchup.

How easy is it to get copies of specific cards for free from MTGO bots?
some of the Pauper/Premodern decks I'm looking at (formats you need MTGO to play) are full of cards that cost like 0.01-0.03 tix and I've heard trade bots just give stuff like that away.
thinking of signing up for MTGO to try those formats

Yes. Just like Black Lotus would ruin standard if it were make legal but just restricted to 1 copy per deck, Cecil is currently ruining standard in spite of only running 2-3 copies when it is ran. A 2/3 for one mana with death-touch and a "drawback" ability that triggers a flip into a 4/4 with lifeline and make all other creatures indestructible is a creature that's way too strong the game.

MTG's rules are designed with small creatures in mind. Prior to 2003, something like Cecil would be 3-4 mana because that would be the only way to really balance him with respect to the rules.

but you're gonna need to repeat that process a lot because:
- not every bot has the cards you want
- not every bot is available at the time you want

AHEM. Pretty much every Dimir Midrange/Tempo deck in standard is running it. And if we think about actual aggro decks that don't show up on TOP8 because they aren't played in MTGO events or big tournaments, then we have a lot of cecil decks.

Which is why I also want to ban Vivi and several other cards. The vast majority of creature cards in standard need a ban since the vast majority of them have been powercrept far beyond what the rules of MTG were designed for. It just happens to be that Cecil and Vivi are way too low mana cost considering what they do.

Run 4 copies of this instead of counterspells or protection spells in a Kona omni list once EoE releases

Its both a janky control spell to slow down aggro and protects your kona as long as its on the board, opponent should have no way to remove kona at instant speed other than edicts OR if they have authority of the consuls so they can get priority while the etb trigger is on the stack

It would go like this;
>Have Lost in the Maze on the battlefield
>Cast Kona, preferably with Cavern of Souls so he's uncounterable
>Get priority when he enters because I'm active player
>Station my planet with Kona
>Opponent gets priority with station trigger on the stack, but Kona is now tapped and hexproof
>2nd Main phase, Kona puts omni onto the battlefield

Saddest thing is that afaik there's no way to go turn 3 kona with t2 lost in the maze and still have a tapped planet. If you go turn 1 shockland llanowar elf, turn 2 planet, you have {UG} on turn 2 but not {UU}. You can still win on turn 4 with protection, and use turn 3 to tap down an opponent's creature, or 2 creatures if an elf sticks
