Since we have a movie in the pipeline and Warlord is about to lose the license to the IP, what are your hopes for the future of Judge Dredd games?

If Stallone had kept the helmet on it would be literally just fine with me. Even as it is I'm willing to tolerate it and it's a fun and good flick.

Anderson from the Urban one though activates all my neurons.

Even with the helmet you'd stll have Rob Schneider. Even Armand Assante having the time of his life can't make up for that and, again, he's better in Demolition man.

It managed to sell how much of an absolute hellhole every aspect of life is in the setting. And it made it abundantly clear how deep the corruption goes. The only real criticism I have against it is that it makes Dredd into "a good guy."

Rebellion does reprints of the Old GW made Board game and the Hex and Chit War Game Block War, along with the expansion Mega-Mania, and they do have a Jenga-based RPG called Dread: Dredd, you can get a PDF of as well.
They seem to have ended their license with Warlord game so I guess Rebellion is planning more stuff on their own rather than relying on licensees

Yeah, I've always thought that. Personally, as much as I enjoyed the Karl Urban movie, I can't imagine doing a sequel to it would be a very good idea. It's absolutely perfect for what it is, as a snapshot of what Judge Dredd would be like in a semi-realistic near future, but 2000AD comics aren't supposed to be realistic, they're supposed to be completely bugfuck insane. The more ground they try to cover with Realistic!Dredd, the further it's going to drift away from the source material until it might as well be an original IP.

A new one did come out.

Firstly, Mongoose made a Traveller-based Judge Dredd RPG after they did the d20 version. I played a game of it once, it was alright.

Next, in 2018 EN Publishing made Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000AD, some kind of d6 dice pool system. I've got a copy of it but never played it.

America and its sequels are by John Wagner. You might be thinking of The Devil You Know / Twilight's Last Gleaming, which were by Garth Ennis and about a referendum on democracy. If I recall correctly Wagner was a bit annoyed by Ennis and that thought the story didn't go far enough because he would have had the Judges lose and then have to deal with the repercussions. Its supposedly one of the reasons why Wagner came back to write for Dredd after taking a hiatus for years, to sort-of course correct. Ennis himself deeply regrets a lot of his 2000AD work, because he thinks he fanboyed too hard and without enough skill.

Anyone who ever says "dah judges are the best and only option" never read Origins where Fargo literally says he fucked up rawstyle to Dredd himself and it fractures Dredd's faith in the Justice Dept so deeply that he is STILL dealing with the fallout 20 years on. After Origins, Dredd no longer works WITH the Justice Department and is always merely manipulating them to try and achieve a nebulous common good that even he isn't sure he is the right man to achieve.

He doesn't even believe Fargo, either- he tries to deny it and bury it but "It was never meant to be forever, Joe" haunts him to this very day and he's still not sure if he's even doing the right thing, but he self-acknowledgly does not know how to even begin to change himself, let alone the system. So he just tries to do the best he can.

If you really want whiplash go read America, then go read Cadet (it's in the first America TPB) and see how different Dredd's opinion on the JD has become. He no longer views the existing organization and its people as the end-all be-all. Almost his entire villain roster from the last 20 or so years has been rival, corrupt Judges. And they are not shown to be 'just bad apples'.

wrong. Dredd is the copy of the most ruthless, tyrannical lunatic despot they have ever had, instead carefully trained to the Law as absolute. Dredd knows the law is perfect and just and the judges are the only thing saving humanity from total annihilation.

Not!Dredd as written by fucking moral relativists, godless pagans, satanists and communists is a pathetic loser weakling. and a retard.

they are NOT the same character.

I know the people who make video games at Rebellion would love to make a Dredd game, but the owners of the company don't seem interested.

As opposed to steady decay? IIRC in the beginning MC1 had 800 million citizens. Last time I checked it was 180 million. (Out or morbid curiousity how many of them were killed by Clone Joseph?)

I suspect this, but there's still more value in bringing awareness to other 2000AD franchises like Slain or Rogue Trooper than peddling another Sniper Elite.

Dredd - Mean Machine by Chris Halls (1995 Movie Production) 2
>>96133222
Agreed.
Generally can't stand Schneider generally but he was alright in both those roles and most importantly used sparingly.

Anyway I'd repost some of the hi-res 1995 movie concept art and test pictures but most of them are over the file size limit. Go look for them they are pretty cool.

I love the 2012 one for being, probably, the best take on a grounded version of Dredd. I don't think the Stallone one really works as a movie or as a comic-book true version of early wacky 2000AD. You'd need a cartoon for that, featuring fatties on unicycles and monkey mobsters and alien mercenaries and all that other shit.

I'd love a Carl Urban sequel focused on more mutant stuff and the blasted wastelands. Have the plot mainly focused on having to venture out into the cursed earth to rescue a vip or some shit. Might feel a bit like Mad Max, but it'd be sufficiently different from the first one.

Also, bit of an aside, but Holy Shit Thirlby looks stunning for 38 years old. She could totally still play Anderson

Anderson should be around 20-25 years younger than Dredd at any given time. Any new thing will have a hound Anderson middle aged Dredd just like the 2012 one did. I’m guessing they won’t have her in the new movie though and avoid psychic stuff for a while.

I never understood why the rad zones and wastelands are located in what are now the least-populated places on the planet, while the megacities are located in the exact places that would get massively-saturated with nukes and should have become the actual rad zones and wastelands! Why? Is this explained in the fiction somewhere?

Why is Topeka, KS a rad zone but NYC is a bustling hive of humans? Did military planners on all sides invert their missile targeting maps?

It's explained at bit in origins if I remember correctly, but the areas with higher population had shielding or nuclear defences, so the Radlands are caused by all the nukes going off before they could damage major population areas to a significant extent.
