Make it smaller scale:
>Border between the kingdoms of shart and shlart
>Ruled by clans of border reavers
>Faction warfare as said border reavers hire eandering adventurers and mercenaries to assist them, bolster their forces, etc.
>make use and divite et impera armies of woodland wildmen to do their bidding

Done

Meanwhile modern politics be like
>NOOOOO I heroically refused the bribe the megacorp offered me to betray my electorate and now they're offering that same bribe to my opponent?! And he accepted it?! He has an unfair advantage now! Recount the votes!
>Noooop you can't get rid of that utterly redundant government department! My cousin's husband runs it! If you get rid of that department, he'll have to get a real job at one of the dozens of corporations who bought my vote!
>please ignore the fact that I have American-Israeli-Russian-Chinese-Iranian quintuple citizenship, it doesn't influence the way I vote at all and to imply otherwise makes you a bigot!
>requests for government information take too long to fulfill? Let's pass a law that reduces the decision time so these requests are fulfilled faster! (This unironically happened in the Netherlands btw)

>What do the factions want?
>What do the key players in said factions want?
>What is any given faction willing to give up to achieve their goals?
>What is any given key player in the factions willing to give up to achieve their goals?

Factions are most useful for abstracting behavior of random mooks, based on the preferences and beliefs of their masters, versus the needs and desires of their rank-and-file underlings. A faction of fanatics might be largely impossible to influence with bribery, but would be more susceptible to appeals to their own belief system; similarly, you might expect that same faction to have their zeal undercut by the fact that there aren't enough true believers to fill their ranks. A faction that's working for the government might have its rank and file both wield and desire the benefits of the status quo, but have issues maintaining discipline when that status quo appears to be undermined.
