>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

>Places to get minis; Updates to the minis list are welcome.

I don't even know anymore. I want to say Wargames Atlantic, but we all know what that would cause.
I want to say Victrix Limited but I'm a fantasy nerd.
I want to say maybe Foundry because I like old school sculpted aesthetics, but I am not sure.

To be honest I like Anvil Industry. Yeah they made stuff that looks Warhammer enough, but they're also making modular 28mm miniatures and trying to do their own thing which I respect greatly.

hard to name just one. From plastic manufacturers I've really liked north star and fireforge (never actually bought any victrix yet, as great as their models look). For STLs I really like warp miniatures and bestiarum. Both have a style that's immediately recognisable, which is high praise in a scene that is full of GW copycats. Bestiarum even recently announced that they'd be doing less monthly miniatures to avoid lack of inspiration and burnout. I think this was a good move, as we've discussed in previous threads, WGA suffers from an extremely aggressive release schedule that makes some sets look rushed.
My only critique for bestiarum is that od wish they'd do more modular sets, but that goes for basically all STL sculptors.

Any company that endorses this nonsense goes on my blacklist, it doesn't matter how cool their minis are. It's super bad news for tabletop wargames when they don't support the industry that support them.
And it's the slippery slope thing too, if the author was cool with genned art, who's to say he didn't gen the text. Just weirds me out.

The Stargrave/Frostgrave line by Osprey Games. For just 25€ you get 20 (TWENTY) highly customizable/kitbashable sleekly designed miniatures with a ton of leftover heads, weapons and accessoires. Things you'll hardly find anywhere else too, duch a great variety of heads, alien, human, everything. I wish I discovered them sooner. You get so much for so little money.

At a guess: The bayonets can slide forward when needed but otherwise stay retracted to prevent accidentally stabbings, and the sharp edge faces upward towards the barrel to make it harder to accidentally cut yourself when hastily grabbing your gun.

You clearly asked if i rub the name off and put my own on, when in fact that would be idiotic in terms of recasts or Lego Knockoffs or "stolen" movies.
And the same i dont do this, Victrix did not do it, because they clearly mentioned the AI usage in the book. Your entire point makes no sense. They never claimed that it was their art. They outright said: We did use AI to make some of the pics.

Your niece clunging to her plushies, your brother drawing a face on its eraser and giving it a name, your grandma and her photo album, your dad tracking an old used up Amstrad on garage sales, your mum and her wedding dress she'll never be slim enough to fit in again... For godsake there's even a whole souvenir industry solely dedicated to selling junks to people so they hold on to it their whole lifetime as a fucking memento.

If there's one thing human do, it's giving meaningful connection to absolutely still, lifeless stuff. That's why you have people falling in love with LLM or their new car right now as we write.

Posted it over on /WIP/, thought I'd share it here with you fellas.

Did another early Renaissance style knight in the chrome/black ink pinwash technique. I wasn't sure how it would look with so much shading but I think it sells pretty good. He's part of a human faction in yet another setting I am playing around with right now. If you're curious about how I did it, it's a pretty simple technique, albeit there is significant downtime between some steps. I wrote a post over there on Friday or Saturday about the method. It would lend itself pretty well to batch work, actually. If you have a command figure or something like that you really want to stand out on the board it's definitely good for that.

Shit picture but here's a shot of it beside a figure done in standard metallic, obviously if you're looking for a more worn and rustic look it's too much, but it looks pretty good if you want a figure to stand out. I am happy with the overall result, anyways.

You can also use the chrome for subtle highlights on regular metallics. The pens have a 0.5 mm head I believe. AK also makes a loose version of the chrome paint that you can airbrush or brush on. Brush doesn't work too well from what I hear. If you want to get a more realistic metallic with just a brush and don't I'd recommend the AK true metal series. It's a wax that you can polish when it dries and is very convincing. Also has the advantage that you can really polish certain areas over others.

I'll do a post on some of that stuff in the future for you guys have a good one

Ramshackle is probably in the top 5. Lots of oddball stuff obviously made with a love of playing with little monsters. Guy's a bit scattered and large orders seem to have missing parts but he's good about getting the missing bits and extras to people.
Warmonger, Pig Iron, Eureka and Scotia Grendel are all bangers too.
I'm mixed on wga and north star, glad they're making a lot of neat kits, don't always want 20 of a style like female spaceship crew or werewolves but get sprues as needed. Has the Damned kickstarter stuff actually shipped? Haven't followed it but heard vague grumblings.

I just finished my first round of Five Parsecs From Home and I absolutely love it.
It has lots and lots of rolling for a vast variety of items, enemies and events
The battle rules are rather simple, but still fun for skirmishes.
It's solo, so I can play it anytime and it's miniature agnostic. I can use all fun and cool stuff I have.
It's truly a great tabletop adventure/RPG with wargaming battles.
For a game that relies heavily on random generation, it is surprising how well of a narrative/story you can develop in your head with just a little bit of imagination.
(Sorry, couldn't make a better pic)

Another shot of the knight, this one was taken with the only light casting down from above the miniatures head, like the sun might as you walk under it, as opposed to the figure facing the light. You can see when comparing the two how the lighting can dramatically effect the appearance of the metal.

How did it work exactly? I've played OPR with chit activation, in practice it led to a more cautious gameplay because you couldn't know when is the next time you get to activate. Once my opponent also got like seven activations in a row, so think I should houserule it so that a player can only get three activations in a row.

Extremely simple: You have a colored die or other marker for each unit in your army, and it feels identical to the ones your opponent is using. Both go into an opaque bag, and you reach in and grab randomly to determine who activates a unit. As units are eliminated their dice are removed, so there's always one die in play for each unit in play. It's pretty fun and makes it semi-random but not completely.

Sounds similar. Basically you get a dice in "your" colour for each unit. And your opponent too. So you might end up with 8 dice and he has like 15 because you picked more expensive/elite units. All dice come to a bag and then you draw a dice from it.. and whose colour it is, gets to activate one unit. And the the next dice is drawn etc.
I believe this system is used in Antares and K47 too. I only experienced it in Bolt Action, but really liked the randomness of it.

Ok, so it's the same as in the advanced OPR rules. I think it was a neat way to introduce randomness or "friction" to gameplay if the system isn't built around an activation system the way Mersey games are. The edge case I outlined in my previous post was caused by my opponent just having a ton of chaff units, which meant that he had probably twice the amount of activation tokens compared to me.

Do these games have ways to interrupt your enemy's activation? For example, in MESBG you have heroes who have pools of might points that they can use to move or fight first even if the enemy has priority. OPR has command points in the advanced rules, which can be used for things like out of sequence moves, modifying dice rolls, autopassing morale tests etc.

Yeah. Bolt Action has the Ambush order. You give a unit an Ambush order and it waits until a target moves inside its line of sight and weapons range, at which point it can fire or wait for a better target. Good for when your opponent's unit has to rush out of cover to grab an objective or the like.

There's also the option to go Down when a unit gets shot, letting them give up their activation for the turn but gain a bonus to cover saves, and when an enemy tries to charge into melee, you can make reaction shots against them.

Not exactly what I was asking for, but these seem like reasonable rules in any case. Overwatch is also an action in OPR advanced rules, which works almost exactly as the ambush action you described. Going to ground doesn't give the player the ability to shoot at charging enemies. Stand and shoot reaction is locked in the command point system.

Archon does also those big sets with a large variety of fantasy miniatures.
If its not Army building, something like pic related would maybe also work? Pretty much all their sets include some more "traditional" fantasy creatures, and some that could easily pass as Aliens in any sci-fi setting.
The question is if its worth to buy a 50€ box if all you want is 2-3 minuatures out of 50. But sometimes they are sold as singles on ebay too.

Same for me. Historically a wargame was played between two opponents and an umpire that was the only one with a whole view of the board. Since the later disappeared there's no really practical way to simulate a true fog of war, but we can still simulate WEGO by the use of hidden token orders and the like.

I've played all different forms of activations, and frankly they all have a place in wargaming. Alternating activation is always mentioned, particularly as an alternative for Warhammer, but frankly Alternating activation is really a bad system for a lot of games. IGOUGU 40k is so bad for 40k because wh40k is a small scale skirmish game. If you play a lot of historical army games, a Napoleonic battle for example, alternative activation simply makes no sense. Your entire army needs to advance together, which is why games like Valor and Fortitude use IGOUGO and it works well.
For skirmish games I really like random activation systems like Bolt Action and Antares. I think this system would work well in Warhammer.
When people say "Alternating activation" they usually mean "I move and activate one unit, then you do, then I do, and so forth," similar to OPR. This system is a bit lazy and I don't think it's ideal for skirmish games where you're moving whole units. This system works well in small warband size games with 5-12 individual models per side. Mordheim, for example, would do well with this system.
In games like Spectre Operations it's alternating phases, where you alternate the move and activate your entire team all at once. For example, I move all my units, you move all your units, I shoot with all my units, you shoot with all your units. This would be ideal for 40k I think

Another activation system I really enjoy and I don't see it utilized too much, is activating whole portions of your army at a time, but not the entire army.
For example, one of the most enjoyable activation systems in my opinion is on Nevermind the Billhooks (inb4 Billhooks and Oathmark fags start arguing). In Billhooks your army is divided into three sections, the left, middle, and right wings of the army essentially. Each wing is lead by a commander. Each commander has a card. The cards are randomly drawn from a deck, similar to Bolt Actions random activation mechanic

And when the commander is drawn he is allowed to activate his third of the army. It allows for dynamic plays and engagement and lots of interesting situations where you can have multiple commanders drawn in a row, and it alternated enough to keep both players engaged and excited

Because Rackham, who were financially unstable at the best of times, overextended and bankrupted themselves making AT-43 and the pre-painted Confrontation games. Their existing fanbase of high detail metal minis weren't chuffed on the swap to pre-painted plastics, and the new stuff didn't do enough numbers to keep them afloat.
Same thing that killed every high production value heartbreaker that was just dumped on the market with zero buildup. See also: Fantasy Warlord by Gary Chalk.
It's was pretty wild when I cracked open some of the mecha from the AT-43 starter set and they all had fully modeled interiors just glued away inside. They spent a lot of money on tooling that no-one would ever see.

>Wait, what's the fucking difference between Void 1.1 and Void 2.0? Which one is the latest one? Why Seb-games is listing Void 2.0 boxes in the Void 1.1 category?
This is drastically simplifying, but Void was kind of killed on the vine. They didn't finish making all the options back in the day; Grendel's been kind of coasting with it the same way Prince August did with Warzone. From what I understand Void 2 is Seb Games taking over the new production license and filling out some stuff for a new edition. Haven't seriously looked into it yet, got other things that interest me more.

> aa wouldn't work for Napoleonic, that's better for IF YOU
Shit take, not saying AA would be better but any game where one side gets to move and apply all its force without recourse from the other side is stupid and anti simulationist. That's just not how battles work.
> Random activation
Always shit. The game is based on piece trading but it can randomly become IGOYOUGO all over again. It's pure shit and about one step above the absolute trash of AoS double turn shit.
> It doesn't work when you are moving whole units
If you can't see how in platoon/company sized skirmish games a single unit is essentially a single model you might be retarded. AA breaks down with gross disparity in unit counts and no mechanism to balance out the power of spamming small (or shitty) units to bait out all the opponents activations before activating shit you can about.
> Alternating phases
Better than IGOYOUGO purely by the fact that IGOYOUGO is pure shit for damn near any game.
> I like (random activation mechanic)
That's great. It's not for everyone or every game.

Would Loin Rampant/Dragon Rampant work with Saga model counts? ie 4 and 8 instead of 6 and 12? Maybe using 8 dice too. Not just fielding 8 models but using wound tokens to act as the full 12.

I want to get some people into tabletop games (I've never played any wargames myself) and think Saga's model and unit count would be easier for people to test the waters with, purchase and paint up. But I like that Lion/Dragon Rampant allows a player to choose any historical or fantasy army and you don't have to learn faction specific rules.

I don't think AA is the best activation, but it's always weird to me to see igougo proponents complain about AA, when its biggest drawback is it becomes igougo when implemented poorly.

No, it leads to unrealistic outcomes where a small portion of the line (yes, LINE INFANTRY in Napoleonic times fight in lines) is way ahead of the rest of the formation and can be flanked on both sides. This is fine if you're playing Warhammer Fantasy or Oathmark or some shit, but it's not fine in a true historical rank and flank game, and there is a reason 100% of historical rank and flank games use IGOUGO, because it most accurately simulates realistic troops formations and maneuver.

Classical wargame rank and flank in general is pretty hokey. In almost all cases it turns into micromanaging one unit at a time into slinging themselves around into a barely exposed corner of a unit to get maximum combat bonuses.
God forbid you get free repositioning and stuff. Seeing people sling about into a slightly out of position frontline unit surrounded by allies, wipe them in a turn, and then spin around to face again? What the fuck was that?
It feels more suited for a vehicular combat game where you're all trying to t-bone each other.

Okay, but that doesn't seem all that ahistorical. One formation overextending in the chaos of battle and being out of line which opens up a gap to exploit seems like something you see regularly in historical accounts.

Proper historicals don't use IGOUGO - they use orders filtered down through commanders that can command only parts of their forces at a time or must rely on crude army wide orders given with flags. So you would have different commanders in charge of say center, flanks, cavalry and artillery. And if one of your commanders fucks around or killed you can get a part of your lines rolled over or just sitting back doing fuck all.

Mantic. Their older ranges are pretty rough but they have been producing pretty consistently decent minis since around Ogres/Undead. I think of them as GW in a friendlier timeline desu. I'm not really gonna oversell them in the same way I wouldn't oversell the others I like such as WGA (some kits great, some just average), Victrix and Perries (amazing detail but a bit delicate in places) or North Star (surprisingly "modern" sculpts if a little soft on detail, maybe more utilitarian than exciting and best mixed up).

Warlord cops a lot of shit and I figured out who at least one studio painter was and their own stuff was ok, idk, I feel like Warlord is almost GW like in size and therefore difficult to gauge what they are doing lol. I know they are much more successful than you would think from reading here.

Warlord I just wish would update the older plastic kits, and make more kits generally. When they do a plastic multipart kit they generally do alright. When they bring in other kits and resin I start to lose interest

I'm happy for people who use it and who enjoy it and get something out of it to do what they want, however.

Pillage is in a very crowded space. Even dark age skirmish games have a lot of options.

The army packs Victrix did look good though. I want to pick up some Late Roman Heavy Cavalry, and some Saxon Heavy Infantry.

Idk simultaneously I'm not inclined to buy it but I understand a lot of one man bands will be using AI these days. I have really enjoyed a lot of the Donald Featherstone, Charlie Wiesencraft, George Gush reprints and books by Bob Codery that John Curry has redone for Amazon and Lulu.

Maybe you guys would be disappointed by the tables and the simplicity but I love the conversational tone and historical tidbits

In the early part of my book about movement there are some notes around leader movement that are unclear, p11 "if a unit can its Warband Leader..." This has been driving me crazy since last night. It's a bit of an early stumbling block for me.

Otherwise, I am pretty excited for Doomage? My intent is to build a 5 man inheritor court and a 5 man unit of the lost. Will do similar for two horrors (incl. some "Hand" cultists) to add to my small pool of Stargrave minis.

Always open to good suggestions for parts for kitbashing the more cybernetic, biological mutation bits.

Generally speaking ancient and medieval battles involve a linear clash with one flank giving out due to pressure and being rolled. Usually people are exploiting weaknesses in the front line to create a flanking effect, not corkscrewing around the corners of each others' regiments.

I don't normally scalefag especially with Victrix, because honestly in about 75% of cases it's not a problem, but I would say the Gripping Beast figures are simulteaneously a bit on the smaller side and they are the same kit with different heads and shields. Their cataphracts are different although Gothic cataphracts is a bit of a rule of cool thing.

also don't get it twisted, pretty much the entire Gripping Beast line is in my view better than its reputation, it's just starting to show its age a little bit. More recent kits are better. The Roman cavalry are a bit nicer than the Roman infantry. And swapping shields between kits that are in design the same is moot ie kitbashing between near identical kits is a waste of dry fit time.

I read it as "Add +1 to the QL roll if the unit can see its Warband Leader" since it makes sense for the leader to be the one coordinating the groups movement. Agents on their own will have a harder time doing tactical manoeuvring.

When it comes to kitbashing just go ham. Sometimes I create a whole miniature around a cool bit I really want to use. Also, you can chop up larger bits and use pieces of them in unconventional ways. Just because the sculptor intended it to be something specific doesn't mean it can't be used as something entirely different.

The first squad and the two weapons teams were purely for love of history before I was even posting them in /hwg/. It's only the heavy infantry that I did to upset the other guy, and even then, I think they're cool. I'm having a friend print out a scimitar that I'll give to the NCO for aesthetics.

The actual thing was
>Buy 8th Army platoon box
>Oh hey, Indian heads, could I include some Gurkhas?
>even a cursory Google makes it clear I'd want different heads for that
>grab some Ospreys from /hwg/'s trove
>read about the North Africa campaign while at work
>turns out the Indians had a big part of both North Africa and Burma
>including that one guy who held off a Japanese bayonet charge singlehandedly with his Bren
>Build a section of infantry, light mortar team, and AT rifle team with Indian heads
>post pics in /hwg/
>guy has freakout because he saw plastic toy brown people and got scared
>decide to lean into it
Did we need all that detail though?

Anyway. Hoping new K47 is good. The firefly kit looks decent but the new German heavy infantry is bad, so it's clearly hit or miss like usual for Warlord.

It is. Not a bad thing in my opinion, because otherwise it would be hard to find them on ebay.
My hope is to get a sprue of those german heavy infantry for cheap after the initial dust has settled, and convert at least one of them it into not-terminators for Five Parsecs.

Just ordered the Bug Hunt book, so i finally will have all 3 books complete.

After postponing their Crowdfunder for some months, apparently in September it will finally go live according to the latest OPR news post there.

I'm not a fan of their decision to go with single piece/monopose PVC minis instead of letting someone like WGA or Archon do the sprues for them, but at least they choose two of their best looking factions to be the two opposing forces of their starter set.

A) this isn't /hwg/ it's better, mostly because one of these two people should be shot
B) one of the critical problems of Nappy warfare IRL was getting the line to advance evenly with the constant friction of command, terrain, and troops' willingness to follow orders. The side that moved first often became heavily disrupted on the advance, which the enemy could exploit as gaps and bulges appeared in the line. Movement like Clash of Spears' is the best overall simulation - Troops have no AP of their own. Each officer has several CP and can coordinate the movement of multiple units with them, but troops become fatigued quickly and oversaturating your officer corps just leads to the army becoming a disorganized mess that struggles to do shit. Embedding officers makes their own unit more reactive but at the expense of coordinating with the rest of the force.

Not really, a lot of the prepaints use very heavy, latexy paints that clog the shit out of detail. Some of them come off fine, some of them I've had to use acetone and a q-tip to salvage detail. D&D prepaints, I'm looking at you.

Building new worlds (even with licensed IPs) was kind of FASA's whole thing. Crimson Skies, the Dr. Who and Star Trek RPGs, even Renegade Legion all got beefy sourcebooks and several of them got novels. There's a fan mirroring the original Crimson Skies fiction page, even.
From other companies, Heavy Gear has a decent amount of lore books along with some comics. Warzone/Mutant Chronicles is absolutely laden with it because they were trying to do the "multimedia franchise blitz" thing long before GW managed to pull it off. Legend of the Five Rings has had a living world since the 1990s. West End Games did acres of supplements for their Star Wars wargame/RPG that amount to a new universe. Basically, anything that came out before the D20 Boom/Bust is gonna have a lot of extra lore.

Had a little girl who came with either a magnum or an LAW. It's still available second-hand. Obviously it's not much of an option otherwise now. They also briefly had a female modern trooper with a slung rocket launcher.
>Warlord
One of the weapons on the plastic Female Survivors sprues is an RPG-7. Also has a knapsack full of warheads. The old Terminator: Resistance sprues had a female trooper and a Stinger missile that's roughly compatible with either that body or the Project Z females.
Astonishingly, Reaper's got nothing, although there's a woman with a duffel bag who's prime conversion fodder.
Note that all of these are technically OoP.
