For a warhammer fantasy player who wishes to get into ancient historicals, and wants specifically to use 28mm models for the enjoyment of painting and playing with them rather than smaller scales, would you recommend the actual warhammer ancient battles rules with individual basing, or accepting what seems to be the current fashion of sticking 4 models to a base and using a set of rules that has no casualty removal?

anyone have any experience with the WGA dark age kits?

their army builder box has caught my eye, just wondering what their other boxes are like and if any of you would recommend them having built them yourselves. I realise they look a bit simpler than the Victrix offerings, and I know that there are companies like Footsore who do amazing metal minis, but I'm on the lookout for plastic minis for ease of transportation/cost efficiency, and looking at using them for rank and flank rather than skirmish so the simpler poses suit that better than Victrix's.

I generally feel like individually based miniatures are best for games of 10-20 models, ie: a true skirmish where a figure is the unit of operation.

Unless you are playing small raids and border disputes, capture the bridge, capture the farmhouse type actions (nothing wrong with any of this) you're going to be dealing with battalions of soldiers represented by 24 or even more figures.

Also, the condition of units is more than just dead and seriously wounded, there is also supply, morale, exhaustion/elan. I think with the figure count of the average historical battle, multibasing trumps figure removal every time.

Then there is protecting your figures etc. Even though some old school rules use it, I think multibasing is way more convenient:

that said, do it your way
if 40mm is too tight use 60mm
I use 40mm and base 2 for loose order troops or mounted, 3 for drilled close order and 4 for horde/conscripts
I do 5 bases so all units are 10-20 figures
A sixth base with unit filler/casualty marker is possible
even sci fi games over a certain size I do this way

Best opponents imho are Hittites because you also get Canaanites and Libyans just like with NK you get Sherden and Nubians so it becomes a bit of a regional bash.
Underrated period and imho underrated opponents are the Midianites - pre Islamic Bedouin camel raiders who basically harrassed the shit out of Egyptian trade caravans.

My old man is in his mid 60s and is looking for a hobby to get into now that he's thinking about retirement. He's been a lifelong model hobby builder (mainly WW2 tanks) and I am thinking Bolt Action might be a good thing we can get into together.

Ironically though the later stages are really good for wargaming as a setting because the forces involved in an engagement can range from a squad on each side to a few dozen soldiers, just like 28mm plus games. Its almost like trench crusade where little units just run into each other prowling around a huge no mans land during a frozen conflict

holy shit how do historical gamers ever get projects beyond the planning step? I'm stuck trying to work out if I want to play Wars of the Roses as my first non-WW2 project with multibased minis and use some sets of rules, or base them individually and use others. Then even if I pick one or the other there's questions, like do I do a multibased system with single diorama bases like Midgard, or multiple bases for formation changes like Hail Caesar. Or if I do an individual based system do I base commanders like everyone else for something like WAB, or make command bases for NMTB.

Like i said im ultimately fine with that it just feels weird having the starter box release with 2 new winter infantry sets, and the next release being the british winter infantry, would have expected soviet winter infantry update more (but ultimately, i think their summer uniforms look a bit nicer AND are more versatile)
The katyusha is pretty weak though, and is blown out of the water by the rubicon one (i think they should have gone for another armored car, or yknow, something more common like the bt-5/7 , one of the td's like the su85 or isu122, or just one of the weird early tanks like the t28)

Spectre Operations v2 is one of my favorite games, I still play it fairly regularly. Spectre Operations v3 (current version) is dogshite. They had to completely rewrite the rules once the v2 author left the company and took the rules license with him. The generic pre modern rules are cool in concept but part of what made Spectre great was the very specific and in depth hyper focus on modern warfare, also the rules and mechanics are very tailored to represent modern combat, so idk how they made them able to handle medieval combat and shit, it seems like a cheap cash grab.
I see a lot of people in the Spectre Facebook group playing the latest v3 and I can't help but feel embarrassed, they're the Warhammer fags who have to play the latest shit even if it's literally a different game system. Fortunately Spectre v2 still has a lot of players, arguably even more, especially if you add Asymmetric Warfare players (the name the author is currently publishing Spectre v2 rules under)

That's also a long-running complaint across so many of their systems though. And probably not coincidentally, tracks with the rise of the Competitive Srs Bzns Player, some of which will have either moved into rules writing or heavily influenced (by moaning) those who do. Squeaky Wheel and all that. Don't forget that tournaments are the reason we have the infamy of WRG Barkerese in the first place.
It's mildly ironic to see American-dominated sites complain about dry, legalistic rulebooks when that was often the impression of US rules back when I started. Not all, of course (I have fond memories of a very nicely written air combat book), but it did tally across a number of wargames and RPG's. I did sometimes wonder if writing in 'human' was one reason GW started to do so well there.

This form of English is delightfully conversational compared to rules made by much bigger companies, DBA, DBR and HFG are all good rules sets and easy to learn...HOTT might be a game you can use for anything. It has the best reading list of any game I have ever seen.

WRG 6th edition was the real Barkerese because itwas that fanzine style plus super granular rules.

Only boomer exploits are around lining elements up which is resolved by either using HOTT or a gridded table or being a nice chap.

Agree about the DB family although I was never sure of the 'taste' of -R. Had some marvellous campaigns with M, too... I've never had a good time playing 6th though. Maybe it was the match-ups or the old guy who was trying to demo it to me (been playing the series since before I was even born, so knew all the tricks but couldn't turn them off. GNW is my one true love. Personally I like Twilight of the Sun King the best (it's written as a generic early 18th century ruleset but with GNW really being the core conflict it's built around, rather than the usual WSS with GNW bolted on), but I do actually rate Maurice as a pretty good system to do Great Northern War with as well. Might&Reason a little less so, it's a bit too SYW even with variant rules. Aside from those and Gå På, Beneath the Lily Banners is another ruleset worth looking at, though I would say that is more geared towards WSS than GNW.

Only the mounted mapboards are worth keeping from SL.

Go right to ASL, it's far more complete and it's easier to find opponents.

The problem with ASL it's his entry point, money, materiel and rules level.
So you can try ASL Starter Kit... if you can find one of the four volumes
Each box is a stand alone.
They should be reprinted soon... or maybe not so soon...
Try it with Vassal or tabletop simulator until you catch one.

Air assaults, amphibious assaults/small boat river craft, Island assaults, small scale trench warfare, dogged urban battles from small villages to bunkers to tunnels to large apartment blocks, special ops teams in ghillie suits ambushing a hundred kilometers behind enemy lines, massive tank battles, small tank battles, penal colony meat waves to small special forces precise raids, etc.

You're right about uniform variety, but that's why I like to paint my Russians in early war Ratnik gear for the distinctive Russian look and Ukrainians in their classic MM14 pattern. I think everyone is just wearing multicam slop now because all their unique uniforms are covered in bullet holes and it's easier to buy tons of multicam clones from China than to keep producing their native uniforms

Is there a unit cap? I didnt see anything about that from what I glanced, seems the strat with this faction is to spam lightweight stuff so you can hit the "add a chieftan for every 20 models" where you just aimed to have a bunch of special ability guys outfitted in expensive stuff.

It would be more accurate to use Vikings, or kitbash with Vikings. The Irish adopted the Dane axe and mail coat for nobles, but notably wore a leine rather than shirt and trousers and remained barefoot because Ireland was basically subtropical rainforest and wearing shoes was a great way to slip and break your neck (there are accounts of island men soaking their shoes in sea water daily). Gallowglass is basically a Renaissance figure, the helm and polearms will stick out.

Culturally the Irish tended to view armour as unmanly, but a helm as common sense and a buckler as an offensive weapon, but by the battle of Clontarf, Irish armies would have adopted the Dane axe extensively as well as using Norwegian merceneries. Javelins, slings and a hereditary bronze short sword passed down through families were also popular.

Vikings occupying Ireland had actually moved more to the sword, a real status weapon, backed with spears.

But yes hit and run was the order of the day.

Alt history-no one would claim cold war gone hot is later, but what if divergence is bigger, like 2acw something like kaiserreich or timeline 191 or even imaginations
Units-rare units, war ready versions of prototype (think su-47), stuff that never left paper, fully-fictional but grounded, things that make sense for scenerio that never happened irl (militias for nato/wp), or purely hypothetical things like rods from God and exoskeletons

I believe theres a clear line between having British WW2 soldiers who arent wearing entirely historically accurate uniforms where one is wielding an experimental gun, and British soldiers who are wearing made up uniforms mixed with plate armour and are all wielding that experimental gun. The aim is accuracy, but minor deviation is where you can get flavour, too much and you make slop.

Thy used to be good, started off with paul hicks stuff way back, their core games offered plastics back when it was still almost unheard for non-GW, also easy to pick up rules sets. not the best but customisable and mini-agnostic.

The rot set in with antares, suddenly all their ''core'' games took a back set, they started selling random shite like boardgames and inflatable tanks shells, things were still fine with them buying in superior ranges to sell, then it really went downhill with them pushing judge dredd/2000ad despite numerous reboots, trying to reinvent warhammer with rick priestly but releasing the most dogshit boring fantasy game ever.

Now we have them pushing their own shitty scale game, and they've brought on two new sculptors one of which is decent but always gets the scale wrong and the newest guy who should honestly be fired, we have finecast 2.0 to save money. Ranges bought up and released in drips years later, more 2000ad nobody wants and shitty books because they literally try to pay guys in miniatures.

...All in a bid to pump up share prices so when airfix inevitably buys them up stallard makes bank.

TL DR: Ex-gw guys do a gw for historical (not realising the unique ip is the only thing keeping gw afloat) and fail.

I mostly have Victrix, but I also have some WGA and Fireforge. Victrix look noticably taller, are they closer to 32mm or are the other ones smaller? On the Victrix offical website it says they are 28mm scale.

I am thinking of ordering some resin printed Medberry figures and I want them to match Victrix and the seller offers 28mm and 32mm options. Which should I go for?

Why wouldn't you just use Dark Age Irish and some Norse as discussed? We have done this before...

>>96257883
Wrong, they sell a few thousand of one tank per month alone. Epic scale, for its quirks, has been a huge success.

Friends looking at running a Barons War campaign. After playing I have noted that shooting seems rather strong, even if 2e claims to have fixed this. There's also a weird "10% of your points must be spent on green troops" tax. Anyone else's thoughts on it?

I would say that the line is crossed when you use units that could never face each other chronologically, or using tech that has never been built and at least tested a few times.

Like the Su-47 existed, there was a prototype built and flown, it could theoretically go up against an F-16 or two, provided you give it some weapons (Rule of cool!), but I think if you had like 30 Su-47s vs. 30 F-16s, people are going to experience some 'wtf' factor.

Units that never existed would definitely be a no-go, nazi mechs, ww1 helicopters or zombie zulus. Also matching like samurai vs. 1980s Iraqis is going to raise some eyebrows and people probably won't consider it really historical.

People start getting surprised at even existing new tech however, so imagine 10 years ago you played a game with mass drones and those lockheed martin HULC exoskeletons that allow soldiers to carry 200 lbs of equipment, as well as mass UGVs. The tech existed, it was around, but no one had really used it en masse before (not until Nagorno Karabakh in 2020 do we see mass drones used, or at least big drones to take out tanks). So people seeing these conflicts on the table would probably call "sci fi" even though the tech exists, they'd say "yeah but nobody actually USES it yet".
Now, 10 years later using mass drones in a game, people just think of Ukraine and it's pretty well accepted in the popular understanding of "what's used in militaries".

As a starting point, then get more detailed with the options as momentum is built. Those are generic enough that anyone can get involved initially.

Someone here was railing against their late Romans, like ok maybenot an exciting set or as many options as Victrix but honestly mine turned out ok. I ended up getting both and even the scale difference wasn't massive.

Many of you guys would behapier printing and tightly controlling every detail.

This is the best way to do historical models in my opinion. Stuff like the British uniform are ugly as sin, with simple flair based on real things wore but were not common it can look good.
>everyone has multiple bandoliers, is wearing scarves and fingerless gloves with more pouches than the average loadout on some of them
Its fine, just dont get stupid with it like give them different helmets and uniforms entirely.

The SU47 example is really just a rehash of the WW2 German player's desire for "what if" wunderwaffen though. Lord knows I've seen plenty of Maus inching their way across the tabletop and no-one really bats an eyelid - in moderation, of course.
The drones thing reminds me of the 'authors notes' bit in Dirtside 2 by GZG, about 25, 30? years ago? That the future of warfare was likely "autonomous drones shooting at each other across an empty battlefield", but that wouldnt give us interesting tables or pretty toys to paint and play with, so tanks and grunts it is.
Drones do have the advantage, for the ultramodern gamer, of finally explaining the wargamer's "god view" of the tabletop. How do you know about my hidden units? Well my drones spotted them, didn't they?
