>Previous thread:
>>96136319

>What is /awg/?
A thread to talk about minis and games which fall between the cracks, or peoples' homebrew wargames.
The >>>/tg/hwg thread doesn't entertain fantasy (for good reason) and the other threads are locked to more specific games.
This thread isn't tied to a game, a publisher, or a genre, let's just talk about fun wargames. Any scale, any company, any miniatures.

>Examples of games that qualify.
A Song of Ice and Fire, Argatoria, Batman Miniature Game, Carnevale, Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings,
Deadzone, Dropfleet and Dropzone Commander, Freebooter's Fate, Frostgrave, Gaslands, Judge Dredd, HeroClix,
Kings of War, Maelstrom's Edge, Malifaux, Marvel Crisis Protocol, Masters of the Universe: Battleground, Moonstone,
Oathmark, OnePageRules, RelicBlade, Rumbleslam, Stargrave, Sludge, Urban War, Void, Warcaster, Warmachine, Xenotactics...
...and anything else that doesn't necessarily have a dedicated thread.

>Examples of companies providing rules and/or miniatures for alternative wargames.
Archon Studio, Atomic Mass Games, Black Site Studios, CMON, Mantic, North Star Military Figures,
OnePageRules, Osprey, Para Bellum, Spellcrow, TTCombat, Victrix, Wargames Atlantic, Warlord Games...
...and many other publishers.

The one I played is Russian Art of Tactics.

You set your activations from 1 to 6.

So you get say something like this
1 General
2 Commander 1 - Left Flank
3 Commander 2 - Right Flank
4 Artillery
5 Cavalry
6 Mercenaries

The default method of deciding who goes first and which commanders didn't fuck up is like this:
Both players roll 1d6, the one who rolls higher will be going first. Available orders are determined as Higher Roll minus Lower Roll
So if say player A rolled 3 and player B rolled 5 than player B can do orders on 4,5 while going first and player A after that gets to do orders he set on 1-3.

There are of course reactions and stuff, so if you don't get the orders you need your army won't be completely lying down and taking it but without being able to seize initiative chances of you winning are pretty damn low. Meaning setting up your orders and deciding how many commanders you will have is extremely important.

Rules wise big armies of average or even below average soldiers are in theory stronger in straight up combat since they can just surround the enemy and beat them into the ground, but they are very hard to control and if some part of them starts crumbling they may very well break down completely due to morale problems.

Carnevale is pretty good for dense 3D urban terrain. This is about the minimum viable, but it can get way thicker. The only real caveat is that it needs to have a canal running through the board and the buildings should be arranged such that short ones are next to medium ones are next to tall ones so the slower units can climb them one "step" at a time. It's playable even if your section of Venice looks a bit Kowloonish.

A TLDR would be give me an excuse to field a table of printable scenery stuff and iain lovecraft terrain, use it with a decent amount of minis and still enjoy the mechanics.
Regular fantasy options in the vein of D&D, Warhammer etc are a plus (or fantasy pirates with supernatural elements as another option) as are campaign rules though I can cobble those together on my own but overall I just want a fun fantasy game with lots of terrain and a decent amount of game to actually keep interest.
Basically a fantasy equivalent to Infinity, a less busted Mordheim or similar options.

Apparently the "Green Vault" from the new edition of K47 is based on the idea that a museum in Dresden is the core of a three century old conspiracy that manipulated central European countries to create the Axis for occult power reasons. Which is actually kind of cool.

>Army lists will be online PDFs, no Armies Of books
>The army PDFs will have fairly basic non-rift units because the focus is on Rift stuff, but all Bolt Action units are compatible with K47
>The starting factions are the Axis, US, British Commonwealth, Soviet Bloc, and Empire of Japan
>Seven supplements planned, not Armies Of books, more like campaign books.
>Five years of releases planned
>All units from 1st ed K47 have new rules with 2nd ed.
>Rift units are powerful but not obligatory. Playing a K47 force against a Bolt Action 1945 force will have a similar disparity to playing a Bolt Action 1945 force against a 1941 force.
>Not every option will have a model to represent its rules, expect to kitbash some stuff, example given was a Tesla cannon on a Pondskater mech

Comparison pics online somehow show them as similar scale to warhammer fantasy but trust me they are not

the at-43 images made me think about dust, is it not odd how exactly similar the aesthetics are between the 2 games? same boxey mechs, same blue scheme for the normie humans, same tone of blue too, and similar power armour

IIRC AT-43 was supposed to be Dust initially, hence the acronym Alternate Timeline '43. After Rackham died the artist started Dust. Not sure what he's doing now. Better models than K47 tbqh.

I don't think anyone would argue that K47 has better models or art. It's just a shame Parentes is such an ass, so Dust died.

NTA, but on the other hand...

Why the fuck would I want to play Weird WW2 if not to kill pulp Nazis and smash Nazi Wunderwaffe? They make perfect villains!

Kinda the problem, they do make the perfect villain. But in this kind of game, someone has to play the villain, and unlike a DM crafting a story, wargamers put themselves a bit into their army's shoes. And not a lot of people are comfortable with that and actual Nazis.

Think of it as a marketing tool to help those that want to play the guys with the cool werewolves and vampire mutants, but don't really want to fully be associated with Nazis. The players that want some more historical basis can still stick on their swastika, and everyone else can just play it off as the Nazis failed, so a new party took over the Reich.

So, to clarify: We don't have the full picture yet, but what little we've seen of New K47 lore makes it clear that the Third Reich were puppets of an occult conspiracy called the Green Vault (tied to a museum in Dresden apparently) and after the atomic bomb was dropped on Germany in 1944, the Green Vault openly displaced the politicians of the Third Reich.

In terms of visuals, I think the more sci fi direction is a good call. Old k47's weakness was that it was too dependent on just sticking sci fi turrets on normal WW2 tanks.

>And not a lot of people are comfortable with that and actual Nazis.
The average person playing a wargame is not going to randomly throw a Roman salute and start screaming slurs just because they played a WWII German army. More so, I think people are incredibly thin skinned outside of historical wargaming if they feel uncomfortable with playing against Nazi armies - be it weird war or otherwise. No offense to you and you have the right to your opinion, but it seems silly to me. The phrase Nazi is so overused that most people just tune it and the concept/historical aspect of it out at this point. Too many people have normalized it and cried wolf and now it is just a passe phrase.

It's a weird dichotomy.
Like Nazis are the worst thing ever, to the point where they cannot be allowed to exist, even as villains in fiction.
But also everyone who doesn't agree with me is a Nazi.

In all fairness, I've noticed that pretty much every weird war two thing has the nazis get completely distracted from their actual ideology in favor of whatever weird war stuff drives the plot, werewolves or infinity stones or whatever, to the point they're just generic bad guys in German uniforms. I guess there's nothing wrong with leaning into that.

If there's anything I've learned over the years: most military guys and gals love to collect, play, and dress as nazis even when they hate nazis down to their core.
