I wanna give my magic rocks some small little quirks to make them more distinct. Already have different looks for all ten types, but something beyond the merely cosmetic would be cool. Here's what I have so far:
>water crystals act kinda like oobleck, solid most of the time but slowly take the shape of whatever contains them
>steam crystals sweat
>fire crystals are hot (no brainer, same for ice)
>life crystals grow much faster then normal, even after separation from their source node, so mechanics need to take that into account

Talk about cool magic rocks, or else.

I don't have any thoughts, but I do like to have small magic rocks in my games.
5e not including shardminds as a core race was the biggest red flag it coulda waved.

For what, the sci-fi thing? Yeah, it's mongoose traveller, but you could probably find similar blatant magic in every other sci-fi setting too. Pick one.

It sounds a lot like you want to talk about fantasy.

That's the issue.
Sci-fi has no distinction from fantasy.
So, rather than saying you want to talk about something that's supposedly different from fantasy, you should probably just say you want to talk about fantasy.
Your "new" invention is just another wheel.
