Back in the day, creature cards in MTG were "typed" as action, as if the card represented what the wizard (you) was doing. So, that means "summon demon" in the original English while "Summoned Skull" in YGO uses the same wording in Kanji and Katakana. Most likely the reason it was translated as Skull rather than demon was because of 4kids censorship back in the day.

Makes sense, the card game in the manga was originally meant to be a parody of Magic. They even call it Magic and Wizards in the manga instead of Duel Monsters like in the anime (though the Swedish dub of the anime goes back to using the Magic and Wizards name for some reason). Bandit Keith was supposed to be making fun of how Americans took Magic crazy seriously for competitive play.

The card's name was Demon in it's first manga appearance. The name changed to Demon no Shoukan in Duelist Kingdom.
The original art looked a bit more like Lord of the Pit though.

And Axe of Despair was デーモンの斧 (Demon's Axe)

But then they started introducing support for cards with デーモン in their name, so they established "Archfiend" as the translation of that word, and had to reprint Summoned Skull + Axe of Despair with

The wiki says it was changed in the very next chapter after its initial appearance.

Based. Magic should print a card called Summoned Skull to complete the circle.

Do you guys think Blue-Eyes was inspired by Shivan Dragon? Not that they are similar in design, but everyone wanted a Shivan on the playground

BEWD is probably based on Chromium Dragon. The art uses a very similar pose, much like Lord of the Pit / Summoned Skull. The design itself for BEWD also takes inspiration by sharks, confirmed during a video tour of Takahashi's house
